  • Uit die pen van die redakteur ...
    • Authors: Annalise Kempen
Abstract: Die aanhaling wat by 1 Januarie 2017 in my dagboek gepubliseer is, lees as volg: "Live each day as if your life had just begun." - Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe.

  • Why employees need to take annual leave
    • Abstract: It is the beginning of a new year and although many of us have the opportunity to recharge our batteries during the December holidays, to get ready for the challenges of yet another year, many people have opted to take their annual leave later. Others - such as many law enforcers and emergency services workers - did not have the opportunity to take annual leave.

  • Crime Atlas provides first holistic view of crime in SA
    • Abstract: Over the last decade, selected police precincts have continued to bear the burden of certain violent and property-related crimes in South Africa. Honeydew and Sandton in Johannesburg remain the top-ranked precincts for house robbery, while the precinct of Johannesburg has kept the top ranking for business robbery for the last ten years. Honeydew is further burdened with its ranking rapidly increasing for street/public robbery. Booysens and Jeppe have remained at the top of the ranking when it comes to carjacking. The severity of carjackings in Booysens is such that, when compared to other crimes committed in the precinct and nationally, it has five times more carjackings.

  • Violence, bullying & harassment - more than a slap in the face in the
           workplace
    • Authors: Kotie Geldenhuys
Abstract: There is a worldwide increase in workplace violence, despite the fact that the workplace has always been widely regarded as a place that is free from violence. It seems that violence in society has spilled over into the workplace just as it has into our homes. Violence in the workplace is a legal, economic, political and social problem that concerns business, management, human resources, public health and safety, and education.

  • Law enforcers = secondary victims to serious and violent crime
    • Authors: Kotie Geldenhuys
Abstract: Mutilated bodies, a living room floor covered in blood, images of a small child being raped ... These are some of the horrific crimes to which those working in the law enforcement environment are exposed on a daily basis. Witnessing the blood and gore so often must have an impact on them, and with this article, we want to determine the impact that this exposure has on police officials and investigating officers, and what they can do to cope. Although the focus of the article will be on investigating officers who are working with child sexual exploitation and pornography, the principles can apply to anyone working in law enforcement and who witness traumatic incidents each day.

  • International training highlights the shocking reality of
           computer-facilitated crimes against children
    • Authors: Kotie Geldenhuys
Abstract: Computer-facilitated crimes against children represent a serious global problem. The Internet, including the deep and dark web, has become the new schoolyard where child abusers seek victims and exchange their "products". The borderless aspect of these offences, coupled with the evolving technology used in cybercrimes, is challenging traditional law enforcement.

  • Hate speech - a tricky toffee
    • Authors: Kotie Geldenhuys
Abstract: Hate speech is not unique to South Africa - it occurs all over the world. When one hears the term "hate speech", one tends to think about racist remarks being made by individuals such as Penny Sparrow and Julius Malema. But hate speech involves much more than just racism; it can include societal aspects such as religion, sexual orientation and disability.

  • Terrorism and crime threats to the hospitality industry Are you
           prepared? : spotlight
    • Authors: Annalise Kempen
Abstract: On 8 November 2016, the night manager of a hotel in Sea Point, Cape Town, was shot dead inside the establishment. Although this attack was, in all probably, a contract killing, there is a real possibility that some of the guests might have been injured in the process. In August 2016, hotel guests and staff at a popular hotel in Thailand were not as lucky as those in Sea Point, after a motor bomb ripped through the busy hotel, injuring 29 people and killing one. The bombing was one of several attacks that happened over the course of a month in that country.

  • Safety and security risks, threats and responsibilities for security
           providers and officers at hospitals
    • Authors: Mokata Nkwana
Abstract: All organisations, including hospitals, within South Africa are mandated by the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 to ensure that employees are safe and free from all kinds of safety threats and hazards in their working environment by implementing "... as far as reasonably practicable, a work environment that is safe and without risk to the health of the workers" (Department of Labour, 2016). This essentially means that an employer must ensure that the workplace is "free of hazardous substances that may cause injury, damage or disease". If a company or organisation is unable to implement the required safety standards, the employer must "... inform workers of these dangers, how they may be prevented, and how to work safely, and provide other protective measures for a safe workplace" (Department of Labour, 2016). This article focuses on safety and security risks and threats that might confront security personnel who undertake safeguarding, patrolling and access control processes at Gauteng hospitals, with reference to any foreseeable health and safety hazards and risks which may be posed to them in the performance of their security tasks in a hospital environment as well as any safety threats to other employees and visitors to a health facility (Anon, 2016).

  • OR Tambo International Airport makes "security" history
    • Authors: Pelican Baloyi
Abstract: Technology has changed over the years, making our lives simpler, better, faster and more convenient. Frequent travellers know the frustration and the amount of time they have to spend at security checkpoints at airports due to all the checks. The frustration of having to wait in long queues, take out laptops, remove belts and even shoes, has meant that travellers now need to allow extra time when they fly to make provision for these security checks. But good news awaits travellers!

  • A hidden letter rocks the boat on a 13-year-old cold case - part 1 : crime
           series
    • Authors: Kotie Geldenhuys
Abstract: For 13 years, a dark secret lay hidden beneath a dirty brown carpet that smelled of dog urine. Then, on the warm autumn night of 31 March 2012, the owner of the house in 21A Leo Street, Kenilworth, a southern suburb of Johannesburg, stumbled across a three-page letter which revealed a grisly murder. The letter began with the words: "Sandor if you are reading this then I am dead." Although this sounds like the start of a Hollywood movie, this is a true story in which the victim's family lived in agony for years while her killers held on to their dark secret ..

  • Dealing with hazards and reducing risks in the workplace : community
           safety tips
    • Authors: Annalise Kempen
Abstract: Ever thought about the risks we face when going to work - even if you are a "normal office worker"? I can't say that such a thought crosses my mind too often, apart from the usual stiffness in the neck and shoulders when spending too much time behind my computer or when proofreading. But for those working in the mining, construction and manufacturing industries, and obviously for law enforcers and emergency workers, the possibility of an injury on duty is much more of a reality - sometimes such an injury can even be so severe that it leaves them disabled or dead.

    • Authors: Kotie Geldenhuys
Abstract: Working with some of the most vulnerable members of society is not an easy task. It is a challenge to investigate the rape and sexual abuse of young children and not many an investigating officer has the nerves to do it. To the members of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Units, however, doing this work is a calling.

    • Authors: Kotie Geldenhuys
Abstract: It is a normal day in Johannesburg. Police members from the Flying Squad are patrolling the busy streets of the largest city in the country when the crackling sound of the police radio catches their attention. The control room informs them about a robbery in progress. Since the address is nearby, they switch on the blue lights and sirens and rush to the crime scene ..

  • Install a gate alarm to disturb criminals before they enter ...
    • Abstract: The trend of derailing home owner's gates to gain access into properties started some time ago and one private security company working mainly in Johannesburg, namely Beagle Watch, was quick to react. They've set up their technical team to start fitting gate and gate motor alarms, and this campaign has now started to show results, with many fewer incidents happening at homes that have these alarms installed.

    • Abstract: It's no secret - poachers are threatening South African rhinos. On 11 September 2016, the Department of Environmental Affairs announced that 702 rhino have been poached nationally since the beginning of 2016. Of these, 458 were poached in the Kruger National Park. These alarming figures confirm that everything possible must be done to fight rhino poaching.

  • Success of 16 Days campaign rests with communities : in the news
    • Authors: Norman Joseph
Abstract: The success of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children rests with communities, and not with law enforcement agencies. This was the message given by Suzette Farmer, a community worker and SAPS employee based at the SAPS Museum in Muizenberg. The annual campaign runs from 25 November to 10 December and one of its aims is to encourage people to break their silence when they know somebody is being abused. Ms Farmer was speaking at the launch of the campaign by the SAPS Museum on 18 November 2016 in the Capricorn Primary School hall, Capricorn, in Muizenberg.

Abstract: Remember Captain Crime Stop and social crime prevention projects from the nineties and the beginning of the new millennium? However, after serving the police and the community for 28 years, Matthews has decided to call it a day ... well, at least officially.
