  • Is local agriculture's house in order? : from the editor
    • Authors: Hugo Lochner
Abstract: The local agricultural sector is not ready to defend itself against negative publicity from abroad. This has been the only conclusion I could draw after witnessing the manner in which the wine industry scrambled to put out fires after the release of the controversial documentary film on the South African wine industry, Bitter Grapes, in Sweden and Denmark in October this year.

  • Agribusiness in China - the dos and don'ts : current affairs
    • Authors: Ursula Human
Abstract: Whether you are a producer or an exporter, doing agribusiness in China offers great opportunities. The People's Republic of China (PRC) is a vast country with an ever-growing population. Although the East Asian nation is a large producer of food, it still imports substantial volumes of agricultural products. Their fruit and vegetable imports, in particular, present lucrative markets for South African producers and exporters to benefit from.

  • Zimbabwe small grain farmers rise to the challenge : current affairs
    • Authors: Ian Nkala
Abstract: As the average rainfall in Zimbabwe has continued to decline in recent years, government has been encouraging farmers in marginal regions to switch to growing small grains. Farmers across the country tend to favour maize cultivation, but frequent droughts regularly decimate the crop, leaving them facing hunger and financial ruin. Instead of maize, the government is promoting the cultivation of millet and sorghum in the drier regions, but farmers do not seem keen to make the transition.

  • Minister Gordhan's medium-term budget policy statement : Agbiz responds :
           agribusiness update
    • Authors: Wandile Sihlobo
Abstract: Rarely has a medium-term budget policy statement (MTBPS) generated as much interest as the one of 26 October 2016 - and rightly so. Amid continued sluggish and deteriorating economic growth, and increased demands on the fiscus for 'free' higher education, drought and other support for the agricultural sector, social welfare, a nuclear power programme and more, finance minister, Pravin Gordhan, and the National Treasury have had a challenging task balancing expenditure with lagging tax revenue.

  • Reviving the once-great rural towns of South Africa : agribusiness update
    • Authors: Frikkie Mare
Abstract: Some time ago I was addressing livestock producers at a farmers' day in the North West province on the challenges faced today. After my presentation, and without addressing this particular issue, one of the producers stood up and posed the following question: "How are we going the save our rural towns from their current downfall in terms of the economy, infrastructure, high unemployment levels and closing schools and businesses?"

    • Authors: Carin Venter
Abstract: "Every house needs foundations if it is going to stand. And where we can roam free ..." These lyrics from musician Kirsty Macleod's song 'Foundations' ring true with regard to taking care of our natural resources and products - as it is practised by the dairy farm, Sundale.

    • Authors: Charlie Reinhardt

    • Authors: Lior Peleg
Abstract: Although drip irrigation has been a common practice in many parts of the world for over 30 years, it is rare in South African maize production. Netafim, the global leader in drip irrigation for over 50 years, has launched four maize irrigation trial sites in the country for the 2016/2017 season. Sites have been selected in the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, North West and Gauteng.

Abstract: The time when cattle exchanged hands only for their meat and hides, is long gone. Just like meat and other livestock products, genetics has become a very expensive and highly tradeable commodity. It has also, in some respects, become the difference between financial survival and ruin.

Abstract: Local and international scientists have expressed concern over the incorrect use of insecticides, in particular the diamide group. This misuse leads to widespread insect resistance. The Diamide Working Group focusses on insect resistance to this chemical group and forms part of the Insecticide Resistance Action Committee (IRAC) in South Africa.

Abstract: The largest, most spectacular and flamboyant livestock summit in Europe, the Sommet de l'Élevage, again took centre stage in France in October this year. The summit was hosted in Clermont-Ferrand, the livestock mecca of France. During the summit a total of 750 beef animals, 550 dairy animals, 400 sheep and 300 horses were on show or in competition. Every show or competition was presented with spectacular flair and every breeder had more than enough reason to proudly participate.

Abstract: Every business has its competitors and while market analysis is not necessarily a new practice, today's key players are constantly searching for ways to fine-tune their expertise. The fact is that instead of turning to whom it is competing with, a company should be focussing on whom it is competing for.

  • Political change is as important as rain : from the editor
    • Authors: Hugo Lochner
Abstract: At the end of September I had the opportunity to drive along some grain fields in the winter and summer rainfall regions of our country. It felt as though I was in two different worlds. In the winter rainfall region, the grain stood green on the fields and farmers anticipated good harvests. The Southern Cape in particular seemed like paradise and farmers were expecting an above-average harvest for the sixth year in a row.The summer rainfall region, on the other hand, was dry and dusty. For the last few years these areas have been in the grips of a severe drought which put immense pressure on the sustainability of the grain and livestock sectors.

Abstract: Labour remains a thorny issue in South Africa's agricultural industry, and the livestock sector has not been spared. Cost is a major issue that affects the profitability of farms countrywide. Before we focus on the cost of labour specifically in the livestock industry, it is imperative to consider the bigger picture. The unemployment rate in South Africa for the third quarter of 2016 was estimated at 26,6%. Roughly translated, this figure means that just over a quarter of the labour force is actively looking for a job, but cannot find one. Not everyone is aware of the expanded definition of unemployment, which includes individuals who have stopped looking for work. This figure brings the total to 36,4% for the third quarter of 2016. This then translates to 36,4% of the nation's able-bodied workers not working.
