  • Changing perceptions of sight-singing : the experience of first-year BMus
students at North-West University of South Africa : accredited article
    • Authors: Dirkie C. Nell
Abstract: Resources for the effective implementation of music education in the school curriculum of South Africa have deteriorated since the 1990s, resulting in deficient individual and group music training. This situation has led to negative perceptions about and attitudes towards sight-singing in undergraduate Baccalaureus Musicae students at the School of Music of the North-West University. This article proposes that a movable do solmisation programme can have an impact on the sight-singing abilities of first-year music students. This process is illustrated by means of a model that describes the interaction between the values, attitudes, motivation, performance and experiences of the students in a movable do solmisation programme. The main research approach utilised in the study was action research, within a constructivist paradigm. Active learning was used as a learner-centred teaching strategy. Questionnaires, interviews, observations and assessment data were collected and analysed.

  • The role of systemic and coherent policy in successful creative arts
           curriculum implementation : accredited article
    • Authors: Alethea De Villiers
Abstract: In this article I attempt to highlight the importance of systemic and coherent policy to enable the effective implementation of arts education in schools. I do so by placing curriculum implementation in South Africa within the framework of William Clune's conceptual framework for systemic educational policy. This framework is used for a descriptive and critical analysis of educational policy practices in South Africa, relating to the creative arts. The research methodology takes the form of a description and analysis of education policy in South Africa as well as a literature study. Where relevant I draw on examples from the United States of America, which has a similar curriculum as ours.

  • The quest for Tirisano : challenges of implementation in the South African
School Choral Eisteddfod : accredited article
    • Authors: Theodore Dzorkpey; Hetta Potgieter Jaco Kruger
Abstract: This investigation describes the factors that impede the realisation of the objectives of the South African Schools Choral Eisteddfod (SASCE) in the Motheo district of the Free State Province. The challenges of the SASCE are consistent with those facing the national education system with regard to policy implementation, institutional organisation and human resources. In addition, the SASCE is impeded by entrenched counterproductive musical practices.

  • "Knowledge in the hands" : toward a phenomenological approach to assessing
live ensemble performance : accredited article
    • Authors: Marc Duby
Abstract: Assessing musical ensembles in performance is fundamental to the performing arts, and takes place in the context of auditions, music competitions, or the more formal settings of music examinations that require the awarding of marks. My aim in this article is to examine the task of ensemble assessment from a phenomenological perspective, referring to some of the key ideas of this approach. These include "bracketing", allowing for critical evaluation of musical and aesthetic preconceptions, and notions of embodiment and intercorporeality as essential components of Merleau-Ponty's philosophy. Against the background of my experience as assessor of undergraduate student performances, my primary focus is on the preparation and execution of two postgraduate recitals in which I took part both as accompanist and supervisor, and the opportunities these provided for critically revisiting assessment criteria as well for scaffolding the learning experience for the two participants. I argue for a process- rather than product-oriented approach to such assessments, based on the potentially revealing insights provided by a phenomenological orientation to assessing live ensemble performance.

The Committee for Music Examinations decided at its 1998 meeting to give recognition to music teachers whose candidates did exceptionally well in either the practical or theoretical music examinations. Each teacher who enters at least 10 practical or 10 theory of music candidates for Unisa music examinations in a particular year and where at least 10 candidates in each category (practical or theory - not a combination of both) obtain an average distinction mark, receives a certificate of merit.

  • Performance practice of indigenous song and dance music of Botswana : the
case of Borankana, Mokomoto and Setapa : accredited article
    • Authors: Veronica Mary Franke
Abstract: This paper examines the social function, mode of transmission and the structural and constructional principles of three categories of indigenous dance music in Botswana, namely Borankana, Mokomoto and Setapa. A significant component is the discussion of the musical characteristics of the three selected dances: The types of song and dance ensembles employed; the factors generating differentiation of dance genres; origins; instrumentation; dance steps and movements; textual articulation; and singing style. These are illustrated by transcriptions and analyses of typical pieces. Elements of change versus traditional continuity are pointed out in the conclusion, as are the philosophical underpinnings of the dances.

  • Frequent Italian lyric diction mistakes made by classical singers :
           accredited article
    • Authors: Conroy Cupido
Abstract: This article examines the most frequent mistakes in Italian lyric diction made by classical singers. Although this is written in a South African context, the information provided may be beneficial to singers and teachers in other countries as well. With this article I hope to provide a tool for assisting with the teaching and learning of Italian lyric diction in various academic institutions. Helpful rules and linguistic principles are discussed as described in various diction sources. I identified and assimilated the most frequent mistakes via qualitative research, based on personal experience, observation, interaction and interviews with experienced authorities on Italian lyric diction.

  • Cromwell Everson and community music-making : the Worcester Music Group
           1957-1967 : accredited article
    • Authors: Jeffrey Brukman
Abstract: This article outlines South African composer, Cromwell Everson's leadership of community music-making activities over a ten-year period, while residing in Worcester in the Western Cape (1957-1967). His initiation of, and involvement with operatic productions, choral festivals and orchestral music-making, inspired the diverse enclaves of Worcester's rural white community to strive towards attaining a common musical and artistic goal, with the ultimate achievement being five performances of Everson's complex avant-garde opera, Klutaimnestra. This intricately constructed atonal work, based on twelve-tone serialism, was mastered by the amateur cast - an achievement that remains unparalleled in South African music performance history. These feats are not recorded beyond newspaper clippings of the time and this article is an attempt to officially record these accomplishments and place them within the wider context of South African musical and cultural history.

    • Authors: Willem Luitingh; Heinrich Van der Mescht Wim Viljoen
Abstract: Hendrik ("Henk") Temmingh word vandag gereken as een van Suid-Afrika se mees toonaangewende orrelkomponiste. Hendrik ("Henk") Temmingh can be regarded as one of South Africa's leading organ composers. He showed versatility and established himself as a significant figure in the fields of improvisation and organ music. Few sources concerning Temmingh's organ works are available. In order to fill this hiatus, the first logical step would be to compile a catalogue. Different styles and approaches concerning the compilation of catalogues can be observed in the wide variety of catalogues available. Therefore, these catalogues, as well as data compilation techniques had to be investigated in order to determine what essential information should be included in such a newly compiled catalogue. An immediate summary of Temmingh's contribution as an organ composer can now be obtained with the help of the chronological catalogue of Temmingh's organ works. Apart from this, newly allocated catalogue numbers will give an indication of where the works concerned chronologically fit into Temmingh's oeuvre.

  • Will my children be musical? Exploring current research on the role of
genetics and the heritability of music ability : accredited article
    • Authors: Clorinda Panebianco-Warrens
Abstract: Research over the past decade has provided a strong, ongoing discourse and evidence of the heritability of genetic ability and, furthermore, its role in understanding complex issues, such as intelligence and musical ability. However, it is often difficult to keep up with current trends and make sense of new research. The aim of this article is to review the current literature, in the rapidly growing inter and multidisciplinary fields of music and psychology, on the role of genes and the heritability of musicality, musical ability, intelligence and musical development, from various sources in an effort to better comprehend the role of genetics in the inherited musical ability and expression of our children. The article concludes that evidence from the studies of genetics suggests that it is unlikely that there are single genes responsible for any complex behaviour, including musicality and musical ability. Behaviour depends on a complex interaction between skills and experience. Genetics may play a substantial role in the link between music training and IQ, although the role of personality and cognitive ability is substantial and is still being investigated. Musical development is a non-linear process in constant interaction with many factors.

  • Cooperative teaching-learning strategies in group guitar instruction for
           student teachers : accredited article
    • Authors: Liesel Van der Merwe
Abstract: This article examines the impact of cooperative teaching and learning techniques on achievement, anxiety and practise time. The purpose of this article is to improve teaching and learning guitar playing skills in large groups of early childhood education students with no prior music knowledge and skills. Based on qualitative and quantitative data, it was found that, when more time was spent on practising cooperatively, students were less anxious and, as a result, their musical performances were of a higher standard. Therefore, the author argues that teaching guitar in large groups could be made more effective by the incorporation of cooperative learning principles.

    • Authors: Roelf Beukes; Frelet De Velliers
The development of technical skills poses a challenge to piano teachers - not only regarding the ways of developing piano technique but regarding the motivation of pupils as well. A possible solution may be found in the fast-growing field of neurology, where researchers such as Ned Herrmann did pioneering work with their contributions in the field of brain dominance and identifying preferences that can influence processes of skill acquisition. By making provision for learners' learning preferences and by applying his whole-brain approach to the development of technique, one can focus not only on finger skills and mechanics, but also, and especially, on recognising learners' specific cognitive preferences. A qualitative study was undertaken and respected piano lecturers were questioned regarding their views on the development of piano technique, the teaching milieu and providing for learning preferences. By integrating these data with an extended literature study and interpreting these in the context of Herrmann's teaching and learning model, a teaching situation could be created that could possibly lead to a positive outcome as far as the development of technique and the exploitation of a pupil's full potential are concerned.

  • Sonic Spaces of the Karoo: The Sacred Music of a South African Coloured
Community, Marie Jorritsma : book review
    • Authors: Lee Watkins
Abstract: Over the past few years, there has been an encouraging development in the music scholarship of South Africa. Lucia's (2005) and Olwage's (2007) edited volumes have started to explore and question music's complicity with the nefarious aspects of colonialism and apartheid. By paying attention to these stages in South Africa's music history, the above-mentioned volumes move in the direction of what one may perceive as a critical form of musicology.
