  • Des entreprises aux lisières des Empires

    • Authors: Claudine Piaton, Ralph Bodenstein

  • The penetration of Italian professionals in the context of the Siamese
           modernization

    • Authors: Vilma Fasoli, Francesca B. Filippi
Abstract: This essay discusses relations between the Kingdoms of Siam and Italy, 1900-30, focusing on the central role played by Italian architects and engineers in the introduction of European building knowledge and techniques in Siam. The general context is the extensively described phenomenon of “cultivated emigration” involving a significant segment of the European professionals working abroad in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In this particular case, however, we have examined Italian expatriates in South East Asia. Several researchers have published papers on the subject in recent years, but a thorough framework for the study has yet to be set up.
The perspective chosen for the article is European. In addition to housing the source of the research, Europe is first and foremost where the building culture expressed by the projects analyzed here was forged and understood. In this article, we do not deal directly with the complex problem of the encounter between the Italian and Siame...

  • Documenting Scottish Architectural Cast Iron in Argentina

    • Authors: Lucía Juárez
Abstract: This article will consider the process of documenting cast iron pieces and products located in Argentina, but manufactured by three of Scotland’s most important foundries: Carron Company, Saracen (Macfarlane) and Lion. It draws on work done mainly in Scottish archives, and is part of a more extensive project being undertaken at the University of Edinburgh in conjunction with Historic Scotland, entitled “Trading Nations: Architecture, Informal Empire, and the Scottish Cast Iron Industry in Argentina”.
Argentina underwent its most intense period of population growth between 1880 and 1930. Owing mainly to European immigration, this drastic demographic change was accompanied by the most intensive urbanization process in the country’s history. Many of the buildings erected between the 1850s and 1930s used iron, especially prefabricated cast iron, for whole buildings, structural parts, or ornamentation. The cast iron elements, sold via trade catalogues, had been widely used in Europe, but ...

  • Roberto Masini, Riccardo Gizdulich. Le ragioni del luogo

    • Authors: Ezio Godoli
Abstract: The monograph by Roberto Masini entitled Riccardo Gizdulich. Le ragioni del luogo (Edizioni Tassinari, Florence 2012), a re-elaborated version of a doctoral thesis, offers the first synthetic analysis of the work of a major figure of Tuscan architecture in the second half of the 20th century, overlooked by the historiography until now. Riccardo Gizdulich (1908-83), born in Fiume (Rijeka), first studied in Trieste and in 1928 he was sent to Florence for his military service where in 1930 he entered the Architectural School. Before he graduated in 1940, he worked as a draughtsman from 1935 to 1937 in the Sovrintendenza all’Arte Medievale e Moderna degli Abruzzi e del Molise and from 1937 to 1938 he was responsible for the restoration of two medieval churches in the province of Chieti. Back in Florence, he returned to his studies (Giovanni Michelucci was one of his teachers) while at the same time working for the Sovrintendenza all’Arte Medievale e Moderna della Toscana. Called to arms...

  • G. A. Bremner, Imperial Gothic. Religious architecture and High Anglican
Culture in the British Empire c. 1840-1870

    • Authors: Alice Thomine-Berrada

  • Multiple Power in Colonial Spaces

    • Authors: Jiat-Hwee Chang
Abstract: The panopticon has indeed failed in the past, at least in French Guiana. So has a regime of biopower introduced to regulate the lives of plantation workers in colonial Ceylon. Likewise, a pavilion plan hospital, designed as a “curing machine,” was inoperative in mitigating the high mortality rates of the “native” population in colonial Singapore. Instead of helping the colonial state “know the governed,” the detailed enumeration of population characteristics in the census of colonial India – one of the technologies of governmentality – merely endowed the colonial state with an illusory sense of bureaucratic control. Similar miscarriages of Foucauldian disciplinary power, biopower, and modern technologies of government abound, particularly in colonial contexts. How can we understand these instances in which Foucauldian analytics of power fell short? Are these instances of failure symptomatic of some broader conceptual or theoretical deficiencies? Can we generalize from these cases th...

  • Sugar and Iron: Khedive Ismail's sugar factories in Egypt and the role of
           French engineering companies (1867-1875)

    • Authors: Ralph Bodenstein
Abstract: In the 1860s and 1870s, Khedive Ismail undertook a large-scale agro-industrial project that laid the basis and technical infrastructure for a modern cane-sugar industry in Middle- and Upper Egypt. Global expertise and foreign companies played a crucial role; two French mechanical engineering companies, Cail and Fives-Lille, built and equipped fourteen sugar factories alone, additional ones were built by British firms. As most of these installations have long vanished, this article makes use of French company archives and other sources in an attempt to retrace the French contribution to Ismail's factory building project, to assess the numbers and locations of the factories, and to reconstruct their architectural and structural features. Based on the evidence, it argues that the decisive characteristic shared by the factories built by Cail and Fives-Lille was that they were erected as complete iron skeleton structures and as turnkey projects that combined the delivery and installation...

  • China Papers: The architecture archives of the building company Crédit
           Foncier d’Extrême-Orient (1907-59)

    • Authors: Thomas Coomans
Abstract: The Far East Land Property Credit Company (CFEO Crédit Foncier d’Extrême-Orient) is a Franco-Belgian company that specializes in mortgages and infrastructure financing and modern technology, but also in the construction and maintenance of buildings. From 1907 to 1959, about thirty mainly Belgian and French architects worked for this company in China, Hong Kong and Singapore. After introducing problems and issues relating to the archives of Belgian companies in general and Belgian companies in China more specifically, the article will present an outline of the history of the CFEO and its archives before lingering on specific architect’s firms, architects, projects and constructions. In addition to the archives of the company’s headquarters in Brussels, additional collections (architects, clients, municipal) and monumental sources (considered to be patrimony more or less) are considered. The potential and limits of the CFEO archives for the architectural historian serve as a guiding l...
