  • Artist and Revolutionary: Panos Terlemezian as an Ottoman Armenian Painter

    • Authors: Gizem Tongo
Abstract: Probably no painter in the late Ottoman Empire was at war with the ruling block more than the Ottoman Armenian artist Panos Terlemezian (1865-1941). Terlemezian was politically active against the Ottoman state’s periodic repressions of its Armenian subjects during the absolutist regime of Sultan Abdülhamid II (r. 1876-1909) and also during the Armenian Genocide of 1915. As such his early life was scarred by prison and exile. Yet neither his political commitments nor his constant displacements prevented him from becoming the most talented of painters, first, of modern Ottoman art, and then, of modern Armenian art. Focusing on the period 1885-1915, this paper explores Terlemezian’s “initial identity” as an Ottoman-Armenian painter; situating him within both the history of the late-Ottoman Empire in which he became a revolutionary and within the international art world with which he interacted as he was developing as an artist. This paper concludes that Terlemezian’s story points to a ...

  • Female Photographic Representations in the Post-Ottoman Landscape: the
Female Body as a Battleground of Imperialisms and Nationalisms

    • Authors: Aikaterini Gegisian
Abstract: The paper explores how contemporary artistic practices employing archival methods can intervene in colonial, nationalist and gendered photographic representations. Taking as a starting point the photographic installation Self-Portrait as an Ottoman Woman (2012, on going) comprised of postcards featuring women in traditional dresses and national costumes of the post-Ottoman landscape, it examines the complex processes in the production and consumption of photography related to Orientalist practices, Ottoman Imperialism and various nation-building processes. Considering how the collection of postcards problematises the historical accuracy of the female representations, the paper argues that alluding to the idea of the “Ottoman woman” constructs a collective space of belonging for a series of conflicting and oppositional social, ethnic and religious positions. In emphasising the instability of gender representations, Self-Portrait as an Ottoman Woman treats images of the past not only ...

  • Gendered Narratives of Loss and Survival through Art Practice

    • Authors: Helin Anahit
Abstract: This essay explores the themes of loss and survival by looking at some of her early artworks elaborating on the complex relationship of art-based research discourse with memory. She argues that the field of art practice and art writing is imperative not only for promoting cultural production, but also for offering divergent trajectories exploring the intersection of memory, history and politics in relation to affect. By drawing on her grandmother’s legacy both as a source and an inspiration, she alludes to the role of women in cultural continuity and she places female subjectivity at the centre of her argument.

  • “Accidental” Encounters with the Ottoman Armenians in
           Contemporary Turkey

    • Authors: Eray Çaylı
Abstract: This essay discusses a set of inadvertent encounters with the late 19th and early 20th century persecution of the Ottoman Armenians in light of Rosalind Morris’ notion of “accident,” which implicates the traumatic event as not just a distant, isolated and immutable past but also one that constantly crops up in the present and runs the risk of so doing in the future. The essay draws attention to the multiplicity of the actors and settings involved in the said encounters: bones, trees, living people, mountains, stones, buildings, rivers, fault lines, and valleys. In these encounters, the temporal pervasiveness characteristic of Morris’ notion of accident is therefore coupled by its spatial counterpart as it stretches above, below, through and across the geography concerned. This twofold pervasiveness is a call to begin to develop a new notion of truth about the persecution of the Ottoman Armenians—one whose contemporary resonance complicates sequentiality and builds on an entanglement...

  • Imagining Ottoman Armenia: Realism and Allegory in Garabed Nichanian’s
Provincial Wedding in Moush and Late Ottoman Art Criticism

    • Authors: Vazken Khatchig Davidian
Abstract: This essay examines the manifestation of Realism within the Constantinople Armenian intellectual milieu of the 1880s by delving into the hitherto untested waters of Ottoman visual art production and art criticism. An image and kindred text are closely read and held to mirror major, yet interrelated, concerns of the Constantinople Armenian Realist Generation (Պոլսահայ Իրապաշտ Սերունդ) – the precarious socio-economic and political situation in Ottoman Armenia and the phenomenon of bantkhdoutioun (պանդխտութիւն), the large scale movement of provincial migrant workers from Ottoman Armenia to the imperial capital – and, to reflect upon the manner and avenues of articulation of these concerns under conditions of autocratic rule and increasingly tightening censorship. The essay proposes that an artist’s brush was often able to evade the censor’s scalpel more effectively than the pen, to convey meaning and project allegorical content under the guise of an ethnographic cloak. By extensively d...

  • The Unknown Craftsman Made Real: Sopon Bezirdjian, Armenian-ness and
           Crafting the Late Ottoman Palaces

    • Authors: Alyson Wharton-Durgaryan

  • Photography and the Empty Landscape: Excavating the Ottoman Armenian Image
           World

    • Authors: David Low

    • Authors: Sandra Alfers
Abstract: The year 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of Else Dormitzer’s publication Theresienstädter Bilder, a collection of German-language poetry written during the author’s imprisonment in the Theresienstadt ghetto. By analyzing the modalities and discursive entanglements that constitute the hybrid nature of poetic texts produced by prisoners in Theresienstadt, I show how Dormitzer’s poetry from the Holocaust can be read within a testimonial framework and outside of it, and why such a reading is important.
