Abstract: A Forum Sociológico mantem neste número o formato que melhor a tem caracteri-zado nos últimos anos : a um dossiê temático neste caso intitulado “Transition to work of graduates in Southern Europe : crisis and new challenges”, que agrega a maioria dos textos, vêm somar-se três valiosos contributos autónomos.

  • As balas no dorso do crocodilo : escultura, memória e

  • Degrees of precariousness : the problematic transition into the labour
market of Greek higher education graduates

    • Authors: Spyros Themelis
Abstract: This paper discusses the transition into the labour market among higher education graduates from 2000 to date. It identifies a number of trends. First, this transition is protracted and not completed for the majority of Greek graduates until their thirties. Second, the labour market is fragmented along education level, place of living (urban or non-urban), gender, age and ethnic lines. Third, higher education does not seem to play a socially integrative role, as it does not shield against unemployment, emigration and precariousness. Fourth, the economic crisis has exacerbated enduring problems integral to the labour market and its weak connections with higher education. The multiple and overlapping problems underlying the transition from higher education to the labour market is at the crux of the economic and political problems Greece is facing and they point to a ticking bomb at the foundations of the Greek society.

  • Italian graduates’ employability in times of economic crisis :
           overview, problems and possible solutions

    • Authors: Michele Rostan, Adriana Stan
Abstract: Relying on various sources of data, the article aims to prove an overview on Italian graduates’ employment and labour market participation in times of economic crisis. It provides a short description of Italy’s higher education, economy and labour market, and an analysis of graduate employment, especially focusing on fresh graduates. Three possible views on the Italian case are also suggested, and some recent policy initiatives fostering graduate employability both at the national and the local levels are illustrated. In order to offer a better understanding of the topic, the Italian situation is occasionally compared to the situation of Germany, the leading economy in Europe.

  • Employability of higher education graduates in Spain: crisis and new
           challenges

    • Authors: Juan-Ignacio Martínez-Pastor
Abstract: This article analyses the employability of university graduates in Spain, in terms of both the quantity and quality of employment. Regarding quantity, graduate employment rates are higher than those for people with other education levels. Furthermore, both in times of crisis and of bonanza, graduates are more protected against unemployment. This is fundamentally due to the fact that they work in sectors and occupations that are less exposed to cycles. Regarding the quality of their jobs, graduates are less likely to have fixed-term contracts, although not much less than those who have vocational training or upper secondary education. On the other hand, depending on how it is measured, the proportion of underemployed university graduates is between 26% and 38%. The article also confirms that the salaries of university graduates are higher than of those who have other levels of education; but they have decreased considerably over the last two decades, especially in the last bonanza p...

  • Employability of higher education graduates in Portugal : trends and
challenges in the beginning of the 21ST century

    • Authors: Mariana Gaio Alves, César Morais, Miguel Chaves
Abstract: This paper focuses on the employability of graduates and assuming an approach in which employability is understood as the result of the interaction between higher education and the labour market. This interaction is framed by various factors and variables including the ones related to the characteristics of the social and economic contexts and specific policies. Drawing on statistical data available from Eurostat and OECD the analysis intends to highlight the main trends concerning participation in higher education and involvement of graduates in the labour market in Portugal since the year 2000, taking into account how these trends converge (or not) with the ones observable at European level. Additionally, trends are contextualised in search of possible explanations, namely related to the ongoing global crisis that started in 2008 and to the debt crisis that has contributed to the deterioration of the social and economic situation in the country.
