  • The olive quick decline syndrome (OQDS) diffusion in Apulia Region: an
apparent contradiction according to the agricultural model

    • Authors: Margherita Ciervo
Abstract: The agricultural models and innovations are not neutral, in relation both to the goals and to the territorial impacts, with special reference to the ecological and social dimensions. This awareness has become the key to observe the olive quick decline syndrome (OQDS) that has affected the Apulia, a land of secular olive trees characterizing landscape and economy. By an inductive approach and according to data on the provincial level, we have verified the correlation between the ways of land use and the OQDS diffusion. In fact, in the Lecce and Brindisi provinces affected by the phenomenon we have observed an unexpected distribution of herbicides and the location of experimental fields with chemical products. The hypothesis is that the pathogens have damaged the weaker plants, that is to say those in polluted and poor soils, while the zones with a higher presence of organic agricultural land result less affected by the OQDS. Data on the local scale could be very important to know the...

  • Nature enclosures: historic peasants versus public and private
conservation units of the Paraguay River in the Pantanal wetlands of
           western Brazil

    • Authors: Scott Hoefle, Ana Maria Bicalho
Abstract: Conservation policy which discriminates against historic fisher-farmers of the Paraguay River of western Brazil is questioned using radical environmental history and critical global political ecology perspectives. Over the last three decades enormous areas located along the Paraguay River in the Pantanal wetlands biome have been transformed into public and private nature reserves. Reserve officials are usually trained biologists who hold erroneous views concerning pristine nature and peasant subsistence production. Research results show that the fishers do not deplete stocks while the sport fishers do, which goes against notions concerning the value of eco-tourism for conservation held by park officials. The private reserves are shown to occult hobby ranches, fishing camps or mere land speculation. The resulting conflict with local people gave rise to a classic class action pitting the conservationists and pseudo-conservationists on one side and the peasants, concerned social scient...

  • Negotiating the State-making in Vietnam borderland – Case study of an
ethnic minority group in Central Vietnam

    • Authors: Trinh Nguyen Minh Anh, Doo-Chul Kim, Fumikazu Ubukata
Abstract: The human geography of Vietnam’s upland area has been transformed significantly during the last 40 years due to the increasing control from the central government. We argue that State territorialisation, understood as a strategy of State-making and assertion of the State’s authority, has the tendency to marginalise, socially and politically, local ethnic minority peoples by excluding them from indigenous social and economic geography and the use of natural resources. At the receiving end of these official policies, the local ethnic minority people do not passively accept their marginalisation but are able to initiate the use of traditional cross-border cultural resources to improve their condition. By analysing the tolerance from local official towards illicit cross-border activities daily carried out by local people, the case study provides some insights on the dynamics of power struggle between the State and local people. We concluded that local ethnic minority peoples actively re...

  • Farmer and scientific knowledge of soil quality: a social ecological soil
           systems approach

    • Authors: Ana Maria de Souza Mello Bicalho, Ricardo Trippia dos Guimarães Peixoto
Abstract: This article focuses on how farmers identify and evaluate the quality of soils cultivated and how their indicators compare to those used by agricultural scientists. The aim is to bridge the gap between specific farmer knowledge and universal scientific knowledge by adopting an ecosystem framework applied to agriculture through the concept of agro-ecosystems. This approach was applied to farming in mountainous areas of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, a global environmental hotspot that has been degraded over time. In order to reverse this trend, local actors have to build agro-ecological systems that maintain environmental quality, agronomic sustainability and socio-economic viability. For this to happen, local and scientific knowledge must be bridged and mutually adapted in order to be successful. This study therefore concentrates on processes of inter-communication between farmers and agricultural scientists concerning the role of soil quality in farming and conservation.

  • Diversification of sources of income in agricultural holdings in the
context of multi-functional development of rural areas in Poland

    • Authors: Roman Rudnicki, Anna Dubownik, Mirosław Biczkowski
Abstract: The article presents the results of the spatial analysis of Polish private agricultural holdings with agriculture-related business activity. The studies involved 1.8 million agricultural holdings categorised into three groups by the dominant source of income (constituting over 50% of all the incomes of the holding), i.e.: incomes from agriculture-related activity; incomes from work in non-agricultural sector (hired work or connected with non-agricultural business activity); and incomes from old-age pensions, disability pensions or other unearned incomes.
These percentages were analysed individually or in form of composite index and they were characterised by significant differences in the spatial distribution, which was due to the impact of several conditions – particularly: historical and agrarian determinants, as well as the absorption level of the CAP funds. It emerged that the natural conditions do not wield any remarkable influence on the incomes recorded in agricultural holdin...

  • Improving landscape or recreating the picturesque'

    • Authors: Guy M. Robinson, Susan R. Robinson
Abstract: Maintaining and restoring historic landscapes requires attention to native vegetation, cultural artefacts, historic buildings, hedges, stone walls and riparian woodland. One United Kingdom National Lottery scheme, which was launched in 1994, funds preservation of ‘heritage landscapes’. This paper examines the Lottery’s contribution to landscape restoration and rural development. It considers different scales at which restoration is occurring, focusing on three examples. The Leasowes estate is a small yet important example of a landscape garden in the eighteenth-century ‘picturesque’ taste. Croome Park, a National Trust property, boasts 270 hectares of parkland and a neo-Palladian mansion. The 105 sq km of the Malvern Hills is a human-created landscape traceable to prehistory, with landscape features dependent on longstanding grazing practices now threatened by changing farm economics. The article highlights different management approaches as it debates issues affecting landscape res...

  • Editorial: Sustainability of rural systems: balancing heritage and
           innovation

    • Authors: Serge Schmitz, Charline Dubois
Abstract: The Commission on the Sustainability of Rural Systems (CSRS) is one of the forty commissions of International Geographical Union. For twenty-five years, the Commission has worked towards achieving “a better understanding of rural areas and their sustainability in various regions of the world, taking care to address the multiple dimensions of sustainable environments, including agriculture, communities, housing, industrial and service employment, recreation and tourism, as well as extractive activities, forestry, and renewable energy production”. Our world is becoming increasingly urban. The countryside, given its distinctiveness and services provided, deserves attention as it faces important challenges. The spaces in the countryside are not at all empty to accommodate urban externalities and at the same time feed people using industrial agriculture processes. In most cases, rural spaces are inhabited and are inherited from a long history of domestication, but their richness and devel...

    • Authors: Antonia D. Bousbaine, Christopher Bryant
