  • Narration in TV Courtroom Dramas: Analysis of Narrative Forms and Their
           Popularizing Function

    • Authors: Adriano Laudisio
Abstract: Studies in ESP have recently expanded from investigating specialized language in use in professional environments to encompassing their use in different contexts with other purposes, among which artistic and entertainment ones. In particular, studies on FASP (Fiction à Substrat Professionnel), i.e. fictional novels based on specific professional figures and fields, or the more recent studies in specialized TV series, offer a new perspective to analyzing how ESP intertwines with fictional narrativity.
Among the most common FASP genres, legal FASP television series represent a good example of how this multimodal fictional genre exploits ESP by embedding the principles, procedures, professionals and the related terminology of the United States courtrooms and law firms into the heart of the plot.
This paper sets out to describe the function of narration in legal drama. Drawing upon Labov’s 1977 ‘evaluation’ model, a corpus of scenes of narrations in and out of the courtroom drawn from thr...

  • FASP, the FASPian Paradox and Specialised Encyclopaedias: Highlighting
FASP Relevance in Learning/Teaching Specialised Languages

    • Authors: Michel Van der Yeught
Abstract: FASP (fiction à substrat professionnel, profession-based fiction) studies have enjoyed growing academic interest since Petit identified FASP as a new genre of specialised thriller (1999). Yet, what may be called the “FASPian paradox”—the proposition that FASP opens access to specialised language while it is not itself specialised discourse—has not been given sufficient attention although it undermines FASP’s pedagogical relevance. This paper proposes to resolve the paradox by using the notion of “specialised encyclopaedia” derived from Eco (1986) and Lecercle (1990, 1999) in order to move beyond the representation paradigm generally used to defend the validity of FASP as a teaching instrument.

  • The Stories Journalists Tell: A Study of Narrative Modes in the US Press
Relating to the 2016 Rio Games

    • Authors: Caroline Peynaud
Abstract: Journalists produce non-fictional texts about the events of the world which are meant to inform readers, be as factual as possible and give them keys to understanding the event. This orientation does not mean narration is absent from press articles; on the contrary, stories are at the heart of journalists’ daily work. This study of how narration is expressed in samples of the US press illustrates how journalists find a balance between narrating facts and building attractive stories.
The analysis is based on a 35 0000-word press corpus dealing with the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. The structure of the articles is first analysed and compared to more traditional narratives, leading to a preliminary conclusion that the press articles of our corpus are not clearly built as narratives. A finer study of narrative sequences is then conducted and shows that narration is present in press articles, but only as background information.

  • Entrepreneurial Storytelling in Organizational Discourse

    • Authors: Birgitta Borghoff
Abstract: Based on an organizational communication perspective, entrepreneurial storytelling is reconstructed as a reciprocal process of “entrepreneurializing”. By focusing on two case studies from the Swiss cultural and creative industries sector, narrative praxes, practices and practitioners of entrepreneurial storytelling in project- and organizational development are outlined. Story-making and story-telling about a curatorial, innovative, entrepreneurial, strategic, collaborative and knowledge-driven design process generate entrepreneurial narration, design, networks and organization-specific discourse. This interplay is suggested as the basis for the entrepreneurial story and value creation that shape the narrative identity of projects, organizations and enterprises. In the case studies presented this is constituted through the project-narrative of “curating tooligans and busy brokers” and the entrepreneurial hero-narrative of “conquering adventurers and preserving guardians”. Implicatio...

  • Narrative, Identity and Academic Storytelling

    • Authors: Ken Hyland
Abstract: Understanding narrative as the stories we tell about ourselves in our professional academic lives, I focus here on the genres which, most explicitly, allow us to do this. I want to explore how we construct representations of ourselves, what I shall call “identity narratives”, in three rather neglected academic genres where the requirements of anonymity and impersonality are more relaxed. In thesis acknowledgements, bio statements and personal webpages writers are released from formal conventions of disciplinary argument and have an opportunity to reveal something of how they want to be seen by others. The question arises, however, of how they use the opportunities these story-telling genres offer.

  • Nurturing the Wealth Beneath Our Feet or Trampling Sacred Grounds'
Blog Narratives on Fossil Fuel Development in New Zealand 2010–2016

    • Authors: Camille Biros
Abstract: This article explores the role of the narrative sequence in the debate over fossil fuel exploration and exploitation in New Zealand as it appears in a selection of blogs. Since 2008, the New Zealand government has sought to encourage the development of this industry, claiming the existence of many underexplored basins around the two islands. Perceptions on these prospects differ greatly as the blogs considered here exemplify. We first present the wider political, economic and cultural context leading to the production of the blogs, followed by a description of the different types of narrative sequences found in these blogs. We then go on to discuss the argumentative value of these blogs in the heated debate over resource exploitation. Finally, we draw some conclusions about the generic features of blogs.

  • Restructuring FASP Narratives: What Students Can Do

    • Authors: Gilberto Diaz-Santos
Abstract: In a teaching/learning approach, this article discusses how interdiscursivity in FASP works provides opportunities for ESP and EGP language learners to evolve from receivers and processors of content elaborated by others to producers of their own new contents. Examples of tasks and projects completed by a wide range of language learners illustrate how restructuring FASP narratives can be based on tried and tested language teaching and learning practices or models. After discussion, we conclude that while it is undeniable that FASP, in addition to developing language competence, offers interesting sources for fostering media literacy as well as generic awareness, competence, and creativity, tracing and documenting the strategies/techniques developed by students in their reconstruction of FASP narratives remains a challenge for researchers and practitioners.

  • Using Science Fiction as a Teaching Tool in ESP Classes for Science
           Students

    • Authors: Marie Thévenon
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to see how science fiction can be used in the ESP classroom with Science and Technology students. Following on from previous work in this field, this paper explores how we can make space for science fiction in ESP teaching, and on what grounds. We first show how passages from science fiction novels such as Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake, films like Interstellar and video games like Half-Life can be used effectively with students specialising in biotechnology or astrophysics. Our aim is to both analyse the scientific content of these works of fiction and appreciate the educational dimension of the genre and what it can bring to S&T students, in terms of both science and ethical questioning. We start with a brief historical overview of science fiction as a popular genre, its beginnings, and its role with regard to science popularisation. We then proceed to analyse its pedagogical potential and present specific examples of the possibilities these works offer ...

  • Nanotechnology and the Gray Goo Scenario: Narratives of Doom'

    • Authors: Marie-Hélène Fries
Abstract: The aim of this article is to address the question of whether science-fiction novels can be considered part of scientific discourse, in the same way as popularized science or research articles, and whether the scenario concept can shed light on the scientific and political stakes linked to the question. The analysis of three examples of gray goo narratives from the specialized domain of nanotechnology shows that they can be considered as scenarios exploring the future development of emerging techniques and its consequences for society, while at the same time highlighting the ambiguous relationship between science and science fiction in innovative technologies.
