  • Lionel Dorthe, Brigands et criminels d’habitude. Justice et répression
à Lausanne, 1475-1550, Lausanne : Bibliothèque historique vaudoise,
           2015, 522 p., ISBN 978-2-88454-142-X.

    • Authors: Diane Roussel

  • Richard M. Ward, Print Culture, Crime and Justice in 18th-Century London,
           London : Bloomsbury Academic, 2014, 256 p., ISBN 9781472507112.

    • Authors: Clare Wilkinson
Abstract: In the ever-widening body of work on media representations of crime, eighteenth-century England has received particular attention, with notable contributions from historians such as Esther Snell, Peter King and Robert Shoemaker. Richard Ward’s book is a valuable addition to this work, not least because he examines a range of different genres of print culture while most other studies have been limited to one genre. Specifically, he looks at metropolitan newspapers, social policy pamphlets, graphic prints, the Old Bailey Proceedings (the accounts of trials at London’s central criminal court) and the Ordinary’s Accounts (descriptions by the chaplain of Newgate of the lives of criminals condemned to death). Ward is interested in the impression print crime literature gave of crime and the administration of justice. However he also wants to explore the interaction between this crime literature and the justice system. To investigate this, he focuses on London during the relatively short pe...

  • Dominique Kalifa et Jean-Claude Farcy, Atlas du crime à Paris du moyen
           âge à nos jours, Paris : Éditions Parigramme, 2015, 220 p., ISBN
           978-2-84096-872-6

    • Authors: Clive Emsley
Abstract: More than a hundred years ago mile Durkheim shocked his contemporaries by suggesting that crime was a normal social fact ; it was, after all, to be found in every society even though it shifted its form since the actions defined as crime might change as some activities were removed from the lists of those demanding penal sanction while others were added or modified. Dominique Kalifa and Jean-Claude Farcy do not discuss Durkheim in this book, but their exploration of Paris over some 800 years lend considerable weight to his suggestion – a suggestion that some today might also find shocking, and one that politicians and policemen avoid as they promise new laws and practices that they insist will win the war against crime. As readers of this journal will know, Dominique Kalifa and Jean-Claude Farcy are two of the best historians of crime and the many issues and problems surrounding it currently at work in contemporary France. This book is a work of synthesis aimed at a much wider reader...

  • Luigi Lacchi (ed.), Il diritto del duce. Giustizia e repressione
           nell’Italia fascista, Rome : Donzelli, 2015, xxxviii + 313 p., ISBN
           978-88-6843-242-3.

    • Authors: Jonathan Dunnage
Abstract: Centred on the relationship between repression and the administration of justice in fascist Italy, Il diritto del duce presents a stimulating collection of essays. These can be situated in the context in which, as stated by Luigi Lacchi in the introduction to the volume, Mussolini’s regime desired that, beyond a merely repressive function, the criminal justice system reflect the fascist ‘spiritual Revolution’, giving shape to the ‘“new” morality of the Italians’, and establishing a ‘state of justice’ around which to build consensus (p. xxxviii). What measures, then, were taken to ‘fascistize’ the Italian criminal justice system ' How did legal concepts evolve during the years of the ventennio, and how were judicial procedures and punishment of crime affected as a result ' In what ways did the organs of justice and their personnel respond to these transformations and how much professional and cultural independence did they maintain from the regime ' What continuities with the justice...

  • Francesco Benigno, La mala setta. Alle origini di mafia e camorra
           1859-1878. Torino : Einaudi, 2015, 403 p., ISBN 978-88-06-22441-7.

    • Authors: Michel Huysseune
Abstract: This book is an important contribution to the debates on the origins of organized crime in Italy and, because of the historical role of Italy in the emergence of the phenomenon, therefore also highly relevant for an understanding of organized crime in general. It explicitly proposes itself as revisionist, since it intends to contest the presently dominant narrative that argues for an organizational continuity of Mafia and Camorra since their ill-understood origins generally dated in the mid-nineteenth century, and tends to project the present characteristics of organized crime into the past. This paradigm, itself emerging after the important court cases against organized crime of the 1980s and 1990s, definitely attested the importance of the organizational structure of the Mafia in particular, hence putting an end to controversies on its very organizational existence. Against this approach, La mala setta proposes to take a new look at the period between 1859 and 1878, preceding and f...

           Rennes : PUR, 2015, 367 p., ISBN 978-2-7535-4256-3.

    • Authors: Jonas Campion

  • Jonathan Davies (ed.), Aspects of violence in Renaissance Europe,
           London : Ashgate, 2013, 276 p., ISBN 978-1409433415. Sanne Muurling

    • Authors: Sanne Muurling
Abstract: While the big debates within the history of violence have largely been inspired by quantitative assessments of homicide rates, there has also been an increasing interest in the examination of violence as a cultural issue. This volume, edited by Jonathan Davies, is a recent contribution to this cultural approach to violence. It consists of nine essays from various disciplines, divided into the three sections (interpersonal violence, war and justice) that intend to shed light on the varieties of violent behavior that cannot be fully captured by homicide statistics alone. The volume opens with a chapter by Hannah Skoda on student violence in 15th century Paris and Oxford. By primarily studying students’ letters and poetry, it examines violence as a tool to engage with and manipulate the labels attached to the dichotomous stereotypical social identities of being a conscientious, pious learner versus a violent, drunken, and sexually uncontrolled deviant. In the analysis of four key aspect...

  • Obituary for Herman Bianchi (1924-2015)

    • Authors: Pieter Spierenburg
Abstract: Herman Bianchi, who died on December 30, 2015, was a remarkable criminologist in several ways. In this obituary I am concentrating on his interest in, and merits for, the history of crime and justice. Although his name may be unfamiliar to younger scholars outside the Netherlands, he was an active member of the “Dutch group” in the 1970s and participated in a number of workshops and conferences of the IAHCCJ in the 1980s. By then he already boasted a many-sided career. In 1956 he finished his PhD (which in the Netherlands usually was – and still is – a full-blown published monograph). Entitled Position and Subject-Matter of Criminology, it was also one of the rare English-language books by a Dutch practitioner of the social sciences at the time. Two years later he was appointed ‘lector’ and in 1961 professor of criminology at the Free University of Amsterdam. When I first met him, I was ignorant about his person yet. It was in 1974, in the preparatory phase of my own PhD when I had l...
