  • The multi-modal representation of motion events in Awetí discourse

    • Authors: Sabine Reiter
Abstract: Recent research focusing on the insights gestures may offer into the mental conceptualization of motion events suggests that a number of factors may influence the way motion events are gestured in different languages. This study aims at showing how in Awetí oral discourse other than purely linguistic modes of representation such as gesture and ideophones are obligatory ‘path’ and optional ‘manner’ components of motion events. With regard to ‘manner’ it will be illustrated by corpus examples that the information state of this motion component in discourse determines whether it will additionally be gestured or not. These features suggest that the co-speech gestures in Awetí motion events have a meaning-conveying function and should be treated as a means of communication rather than as a feature which is produced with a low level of speaker awareness, merely providing insights into mental conceptualizations.

  • Towards an Analysis of Complex Motion Event Packaging in South Eastern
           Huastec (Maya, Mexico)

    • Authors: Ana Kondic
Abstract: 1. Introduction This paper presents an underdescribed and typologically interesting way of encoding the Path component of complex motion events in South Eastern Huastec (in further text HSF, according to its Ethnologue code), a Mayan language spoken in Mexico. This is the first study on the expression of space and motion in Huastecan languages, based on the fieldwork in Mexico and carried out within the “Trajectoire” project funded by the Fédération de Typologie et Universaux Linguistiques (CNRS, France). The data presented in this paper was first analysed in my PhD thesis (Kondic 2012). The aim of this paper is to extend the analysis. The following examples demonstrate the type of constructions to be discussed in this paper. The first construction demonstrates the HSF way of expressing a complex motion event (Source, Goal and Median) as three different clauses, where English, for example, has only one, like in Pablo went from Tantoyuca to Mexico City past Chontla: (1) Paablo Pablo kal‑ej...

  • Oui, il y a des particules de démodulation en français

    • Authors: Steven Schoonjans
Abstract: Modal particle are generally considered as a characteristic feature of some languages, notably German. For French, some parallels have been noted between the behavior of certain words and that of German particles. However, syntactic differences between German and French are such that some authors are reluctant to classify these French words as modal particles (e.g., Abraham 1991a and Waltereit 2006). In this paper, the relevance of syntactic behavior as a counter-argument to this classification is questioned (bonnement, donc, quand même, seulement, simplement and tout de même).

  • Phonetic and functional aspects of speech laughter: towards an expressive
           cognitive phonology

    • Authors: George Dunbar
Abstract: Taking speech laughter as an example, an approach towards cognitive phonology is sketched. Data from the Scottish Corpus was compared to earlier findings from spoken German. Both used pitch contours to express speech laughter, but several other mechanisms, including amplitude variation and vowel lengthening, were found in the Scots data. There was a relationship between the form and function of speech laughter, and substantial individual variation in the repertoire of forms employed by speakers.

  • L’étrange polysémie du verbe quedar, ou l’expression de la
permanence et du changement : étude diachronique et synchronique

    • Authors: Lucía Gómez Vicente
Abstract: Le verbe espagnol quedar témoigne d’une grande richesse sémantique.

  • Modality and linguistic change in Spanish Sign Language (LSE)

    • Authors: Carmen Cabeza-Pereiro
Abstract: Our aim in this paper is to research the historical process of grammaticalization of the modal meanings of necessity (deontic and epistemic) in Spanish Sign Language (lengua de signos española, abbreviated LSE). We will use as our data source the Diccionario usual de mímica y dactilología (‘Usual dictionary of mime and fingerspelling’), published by Francisco Fernández Villabrille in 1851, in order to identify the signs which expressed the meanings we are interested in and to trace the possible motivations for the forms that conveyed them and their relation to other similar signs. Then, we will compare these data with some of the current signs provided by the Diccionario normativo de la lengua de signos española (DNLSE, ‘Standardized Dictionary of Spanish Sign Language’, cf. Fundación CNSE 2008.
