  • Toward A Transnational History of Turkish Studies (18th-20th Centuries)

    • Abstract: Turkish studies, as a seemingly autonomous field of knowledge, has not been critically examined. Turkology is the subject of several handbooks and journal issues, as well as numerous articles, which are mostly the works of specialists who seek to retrace a tradition, reassess the state of the field, or pay tribute to their predecessors. With few exceptions, they generally provide a linear, internalist, if not hagiographic narrative centered on the “life-and-work” of a series of outstanding individuals. Moreover, conducted country by country, these bio-bibliographic surveys tend to neglect the circulation of ideas, men and artifacts, and rarely confront different traditions. Lastly, in Turkey, the history of Turkish studies is often conflated with that of Turkism, therefore conveying a strong nationalist imaginary. In sum, the available literature says little about the epistemological but also social, political, and economic dynamics behind the constitution of the field: these are th...

    • Abstract: Tanıtma Alan ve mekan ile ilgili soru(n)ların sivil toplum nazarında ve sosyal bilimler merceğinde giderek önem kazandığı gözleminden yola çıkarak, EJTS’in planladığı sayısında, günümüz Türkiyesi’nde mekanların nasıl oluşturulduğu konusunu ideolojik, prakseolojik ve epistemolojik açılardan işleyeceğiz.

  • Manufacturing and Dismantling Territories in Contemporary Turkey

    • Abstract: Project Outline Starting from the observation that territorial issues are of increasing significance in Turkish civil society and social sciences, this thematic issue will enquire into how territories in contemporary Turkey are manufactured from an ideological, praxiological, and epistemological point of view. As in other countries around the Mediterranean basin, rapid, far-reaching transformations to urban and rural territories have crystallised various sources of opposition to a policy viewed as predatory and brutal. The news is full of denunciations of territorial inequalities and of the confiscation or compulsory purchase of land without prior consultation, from the Çoruh Valley to the olive groves of Yırca in the region of Manisa, without forgetting the urban revolts and protests in Istanbul, all raising the basic issue of the “right to a territory”, as well as bringing out how ambivalent this idea is. The Turkish language does not have any signifier equivalent to that of “territ...

  • Heritage production in Turkey. Actors, issues, and scales

    • Abstract: Present-day Turkey is home to a proliferation in heritage production – with works of local history, museums, urban initiatives, etc. -bringing together a large number of actors, many different identity demands, and a variety of scales (ranging from the local and national up to the international – with the involvement of international organisations and the dissemination of standards and instruments, as well as the development of tourism and the accompanying invention of heritage). This special issue of the EJTS will seek to study the dynamics that may be discerned within this heritagization, the actors involved, and the issues at stake. More specifically this special issue will seek to explore the theme of heritage in Turkey by focusing on the relationship between heritage and nation-building. This issue will be addressed by analysing heritage as process and as social construct, and by studying the concept of heritage held by the various actors involved, including professionals and n...

  • ‘Knowledge is a potent instrument for change’. Interview with
           Doğu Ergil

    • Authors: Doğu Ergil
Abstract: I. Interview Interview conducted by Marie Le Ray, Ankara, June 15, 2006. EJTS: Could you start by introducing yourself, and tell more specifically about your academic career within and outside Turkey. How did you come to get interested in the Kurdish question' DE: Well, I’m a professor of political sociology, chairman of the Department of Political Behaviour, at the Faculty of Political Science, Ankara University. My education is partly Turkish, partly American. I have earned my BA degree in Turkey; MA and PhD degree is in the US. After being assigned to an academic post at the Faculty of Political Science, I worked on political inclinations, ethnic relations, political parties and political violence. And in this context, I accomplished the first research on political violence in Turkey, which was consummated in a book called ‘Social and Cultural Roots of Political Violence in Turkey’ in 1980, based on interviews in the prison system, on right-wing and left-wing militants. And then, in...

  • Kinship and Transborder Exchange at the Bulgarian-Serbian border in the
second half of the 20th century

    • Authors: Galia Valtchinova
Abstract: The paper explores the nature and the varieties of transborder encounters on the Bulgarian-Serbian border during socialism and the first post-socialist decade. It offers some facts, and analyzes processes showing what happens when family and kinship have been politicized and manipulated, both on the level of existing structures and as symbols. A historical sketch and an overview of the local structures of kinship provide avenues for understanding the importance of the uses of kinship in a border society and the discourse of ‘being the same kin’ with people on the other side of the border. The ritual and effective uses of kinship in the peculiar conditions of State socialism are analyzed in the second part of the paper. The third and most lengthy part is dedicated to the post-socialist transformations in the visions of kinship and to some patterns of the use of kin in the context of ‘liberal market’ economy. I hope having shown that the visions of how to ‘use’ of family ties – and wh...

  • Introducing ‘Ill-literate Knowledge’

    • Authors: Marc Aymes
Abstract: In June 2006 a workshop entitled ‘Illiterate Knowledge’ was held in Amman during the second World Congress for Middle East Studies. Its stated purpose was (quoting from the then advertised call for papers) ‘to bring together scholars scrutinizing various aspects of illiteracy in today’s and yesterday’s Mediterranean and Middle Eastern worlds’. The present volume is a follow-up to this first gathering. — Hold on a minute: How come the title of this issue has become ‘Ill-literate Knowledge’' What is this third ‘l’ poking round the hyphen' There must be a misspelling here! — No mistake about it: this distortion is precisely what the following issue is all about. As a matter of fact, a key development of the project has been to embark on a critical examination of the notion of ‘illiteracy’ itself. Which, to be sure, involves its (supposed) opposite, ‘literacy’. Layers of Literacy Let us then try sketching out an economical definition of the latter. One could arguably stress three di...
