Unilateral Congenital Cataract by Active Vision Therapy
    • Authors: Arun Verma; Daljit Singh
      Pages: 284 - 290
Abstract: Abstract We studied the benefit of active vision therapy in 910 pseudophakic amblyopic children and young adults suffering from unilateral congenital cataract. It was concluded that noninvasive active vision therapy helps improve visual acuity in the majority of subjects. However, the treatment demands much perseverance from both patient and therapist.

Thickness in Strabismic and Anisometropic Amblyopia
    • Authors: Yasar Duranoglu
      Pages: 291 - 295
Abstract: Abstract We compared the optic nerve head topography and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness of the strabismic and anisometropic amblyopic eyes with the normal fellow eyes and age-matched controls and concluded that, although amblyopia is a functional visual loss, RNFL thickness and optic nerve head topographic changes in strabismic and anisometropic amblyopic eyes may be affected by amblyopia. Further histopathological and clinic confirmations are needed.

Abstract: Abstract We evaluated and compared the safety and efficacy of the conjunctival–limbal autograft, amniotic membrane transplantation, and intraoperative application of mitomycin C in 94 patients undergoing primary pterygium surgery and concluded that conjunctival–limbal autografting and amniotic membrane methods were more effective and safer than intraoperative mitomycin C.

  • The Effect of Ocular Hypotensive Agents on Macula
    • Authors: Faruk Oztürk; Güliz Fatma Yavas; Tuncay Küsbeci
      Pages: 302 - 306
Abstract: Abstract We evaluated the effect of long-term topical antiglaucoma drugs on the macula using the noninvasive macular visual field threshold test in 100 eyes of 75 patients with ocular hypertension or primary open-angle glaucoma. We found that topical antiglaucoma agents can alter macular sensitivity after long-term therapy and advise evaluation of the macula in glaucoma patients receiving antiglaucomatous agents.

  • Two-Year Results of Intravitreal Triamcinolone Acetonide Injection for the
Treatment of Macular Edema Due to Central Retinal Vein Occlusion
    • Authors: Figen Batioglu; Emin Özmert; Elif Akmese
      Pages: 307 - 312
Abstract: Abstract We investigated intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide injection for the treatment of macular edema due to central retinal vein occlusion in 20 patients. Mean central macular thickness at 3 days, 1, 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months postoperatively was different than baseline. Visual acuity did not change. Intravitreal triamcinolone injection significantly improves short-term anatomy, but recurrences and steroid-related complications were noted in the longer term.

Abstract: Abstract In 50 patients undergoing anterior segment intraocular surgery we determined that a three-day course of topical ofloxacin followed by preoperative povidone–iodine irrigation caused a marked decrease in the number of conjunctival bacterial flora and resulted in no contamination of the anterior chamber aqueous fluid at the beginning and conclusion of surgery.

  • Comparison between Indices of Humphrey Matrix and Humphrey Perimetry in
Early Glaucoma Patients and Normal Subjects

Abstract: Abstract We compared visual field indices calculated by Humphrey matrix perimetry (HMP) and Humphrey perimetry (HP) in 62 early glaucoma patients and 587 normal subjects. Reliability indices, except for the false positive rate, were smaller when using HMP. Mean deviation (MD) and pattern standard deviation (PSD) calculated by HMP correlated with those by HP, but MD by HMP showed larger defects in early glaucoma patients. Thus, HMP might be more sensitive for detecting glaucomatous visual field loss.

Abstract: Abstract We evaluated neodymium-doped yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser posterior capsulotomy procedure with or without anesthesia in 35 pediatric eyes and 51 adult eyes. We concluded that Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomies in children are similar to adults in general aspects and that Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy can be performed safely and effectively in children under topical or no anesthesia.

  • Exfoliation Syndrome as a Risk Factor for Corneal Endothelial Cell Loss in
           Cataract Surgery
    • Authors: Kuldar Kaljurand; Pait Teesalu
      Pages: 327 - 333
Abstract: Purpose To compare the influence of various cataract surgery pre-, intra-, and postoperative characteristics to cornea endothelium and thickness in patients with and without exfoliation syndrome (PEX). Methods In this prospective study 27 consecutive patients with and 26 patients without PEX as a control group scheduled for cataract surgery were studied. The corneal endothelial cells were evaluated preoperatively and postoperatively at 1 day and 1 month after surgery using noncontact specular microscopy. Intraoperative parameters of operation time, phacoemulsification (phaco) time, phaco power and amount of balanced salt solution (BSS) were recorded. The effects of age, axial length, anterior chamber depth (ACD), and lens thickness were evaluated. Results There were no significant preoperative differences in endothelium morphology between the two groups. The mean endothelial cell loss 1 month after surgery was 18.1% in the PEX group and 11.6% in the control group (p = 0.06). Phaco time and used BSS values were significantly higher in patients with PEX but had no significant influence on endothelial cell loss. In regression analysis phaco power (p = 0.02) and age (p = 0.004) had a significant influence on endothelial cell loss. PEX in interaction with overall phaco impact had a negative influence on endothelial cell loss (p = 0.05). Conclusions PEX as a main effect was not found to have a negative influence on endothelial cell loss. However, PEX in cases of high phaco impact significantly increases the risk of endothelial cell loss.

      Pages: 334 - 336
Abstract: Abstract We describe a case of internal carotid artery dissection, an important cause of ischemic cerebrovascular disease. Presentations include a headache, which is usually unilateral to the side of carotid dissection, sharp, nonthrobbing in nature with radiation from the neck. The clinical presentations, investigations, and treatment of the disease are discussed.

Abstract: Abstract We describe a case of bilateral papillophlebitis with disc edema, scattered cotton-wool spots, flame-shaped hemorrhages, and exudates around the optic discs and in the macula of a 33-year-old patient with essential hypertension. The pathophysiology and natural course of the disease is discussed.

  • Vitrectomy for Treatment of Macular Hole in Diabetic Retinopathy

      Pages: 340 - 342
Abstract: Abstract We evaluated the efficacy of vitrectomy for treatment of macular hole in 12 patients with diabetic retinopathy. Macular hole closure, improvement in visual acuity, and retinal attachment rates were all 83%. Postoperative complications included temporary intraocular pressure elevation (2), nuclear sclerosis (3), and retinal redetachment (2). Vitrectomy is an effective and safe method for treating macular hole in diabetic retinopathy.

  • Central Retinal Vein Occlusion Secondary to Protein S Deficiency

      Pages: 343 - 344
Abstract: Abstract We present a case of protein S deficiency causing central retinal vein occlusion treated with anticoagulation, which includes heparin followed by oral warfarin therapy. This article highlights the importance of looking for other possible causes of central retinal vein occlusion, especially in younger patients with negative initial investigations.

      Pages: 345 - 347
Abstract: Abstract Subperiosteal orbital hematomas are uncommon. The delayed presentation of such an event is described in an anticoagulated patient who attempted self-strangulation. Despite the initial presence of a relative afferent pupillary defect, excellent visual recovery occurred, demonstrating the importance of prompt recognition and treatment. The causes, mechanism of visual loss, radiographic diagnosis, and treatment of subperiosteal hemorrhages are discussed.
