  • Nanofibril Organization in Silk Fiber as Inspiration for Ductile and
           Damage-Tolerant Fiber Design
    • Abstract: Ductile and damage-tolerant fibers (DDTFs) are desired in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, and biomedical engineering because of their ability to prevent the catastrophic sudden structural/mechanical failure. However, in practice, design and fabrication of DDTFs remain a major challenge due to finite fiber size and limited processing techniques. In this regard, animal silks can provide inspirations. They are hierarchically structured protein fibers with an elegant trade-off of mechanical strength, extensibility and damage tolerance, making them one of the toughest materials known. In this article, we confirmed that nanofibril organization could improve the ductility and damage-tolerance of silk fibers through restricted fibril shearing, controlled slippage and cleavage. Inspired by these strategies, we further established a rational strategy to produce polyamide DDTFs by combining electrospinning and yarn-spinning techniques. The resultant polymeric DDTFs show a silk-like fracture resistance behavior, indicating potential applications in smart textile, biomedicine, and mechanical engineering. Graphic

  • Smart Cotton Fabric with CO 2 -Responsive Wettability for Controlled
           Oil/Water Separation
    • Abstract: Abstract Stimuli-responsive materials with switchable wettability have promising practical applications in oil/water separation. A novel CO2-responsive cotton fabric for controlled oil/water separation was fabricated based on mussel-inspired reaction and polymerized with 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA). As expected, the modified fabric exhibited switchable hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity after CO2/N2 alternation, and it could be used for gravity-driven CO2-controlled oil/water separation. Water was selectively penetrated through the fabric and separated from oil after treating by CO2. A reversed wettability could be generated through simply treated with N2. It is expected that the as-prepared fabrics could be applied in smart oil/water separation due to the attractive properties of CO2-switchable system.

    • Abstract: Recently, researches on artificial muscles for imitating the functions of the natural muscles has attracted wide attention. The fiber-shape actuators, shape-memory materials or deforming devices, which are similar to human muscle fiber bundles, have extensively studied and provided more possibilities for artificial muscles. Herein, we develop a thermal responsible fiber-shaped actuator based on the low-cost hollow polyethylene fiber. The sheath-core structured fibrous actuators and the stainless-steel conductive yarn winded pre-stretched polyethylene actuators are fabricated with the heating assisted pre-stretching procedure. The actuation mechanism of the thermal-responsive orientation change of molecular chains driving the actuation is discussed and demonstrated by 2D XRD patterns. These polyethylene-based fibrous actuators displayed three significant advantages including (i) color-turning and shape-changing bifunctional response, (ii) direct joule heating actuation and (iii) effective contraction (18% shrinkage of the pristine length) and lifting ability (the ratio of lifting weight to self-weight is up to 50).   • Pseudocapacitive Charge Storage in Thin Nanobelts
    • Abstract: Abstract This article reports that extremely thin nanobelts (thickness ~ 10 nm) exhibit pseudocapacitive (PC) charge storage in the asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) configuration, while show battery-type charge storage in their single electrodes. Two types of nanobelts, viz. NiO–Co3O4 hybrid and spinal-type NiCo2O4, developed by electrospinning technique are used in this work. The charge storage behaviour of the nanobelts is benchmarked against their binary metal oxide nanowires, i.e., NiO and Co3O4, as well as a hybrid of similar chemistry, CuO–Co3O4. The nanobelts have thickness of ~ 10 nm and width ~ 200 nm, whereas the nanowires have diameter of ~ 100 nm. Clear differences in charge storage behaviours are observed in NiO–Co3O4 hybrid nanobelts based ASCs compared to those fabricated using the other materials—the former showed capacitive behaviour whereas the others revealed battery-type discharge behaviour. Origin of pseudocapacitance in nanobelts based ASCs is shown to arise from their nanobelts morphology with thickness less than typical electron diffusion lengths (~ 20 nm). Among all the five type of devices fabricated, the NiO–Co3O4 hybrid ASCs exhibited the highest specific energy, specific power and cycling stability.

  • N -Halamine Functionalized Electrospun Poly(Vinyl Alcohol- co -Ethylene)
           Nanofibrous Membranes with Rechargeable Antibacterial Activity for
           Bioprotective Applications
    • Abstract: Developing bioprotective materials with bactericidal activity is of great significance since it can effectively keep healthcare workers from infection by emerging infectious diseases; however, this is still a big challenge. Herein, we fabricate a novel rechargeable N-halamine antibacterial material by functionalizing electrospun poly(vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene) (EVOH) nanofibers with dimethylol-5,5-dimethylhydantoin (DMDMH). The premise of the design is that the N-halamine compound, DMDMH, can be covalently grafted on the nanofibers, endowing the EVOH nanofibrous membranes (ENM) with rechargeable and durable bactericidal activity. The as-prepared DMDMH functionalized ENM (EDNM) render rechargeable chlorination capacity (> 2000 ppm), high inactivation efficacy against bacteria (> 99.9999% within 3 min), high filtration efficiency (> 99.5%) under low air resistance, and robust mechanical properties, which are due to the synergistic effect of the unique characters of N-halamines and electrospun nanofibrous architecture. The successful synthesis of the N-halamine antibacterial membranes can serve as a functional layer of protective equipment that capable of inactivating and intercepting pathogenic bioaerosols, providing new ways into the development of new-generation antibacterial bioprotective materials.   • Perovskite Solar Fibers: Current Status, Issues and Challenges
    • Abstract: Abstract Perovskite-based solar cells with high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) are currently being demonstrated in solid-state device designs. Their elevated performances can possibly be attained with different non-standard geometries, for example, the fiber-shaped perovskite solar cells, in the light of careful design and engineering. Fiber-shaped solar cells are promising in smart textiles energy harvesting towards next-generation electronic applications and devices. They can be made with facile process and at low cost. Recently, fiber-shaped perovskite solar devices have been reported, particularly with the focus on the proof-of-concept in such non-traditional architectures. In this line, there are so many technical aspects which need to be addressed, if these photovoltaic (PV) cells are to be industrialized and produced massively. Herein, a well-organized and comprehensive discussion about the reported devices in this arena is presented. The challenges that need to be addressed, the possible solutions and the probable applications of these PV cells are also discussed. More still, the perovskite fiber-shaped PV cells with other fiber PV devices reported in literature in terms of their scope, characteristic designs, performances, and other technical considerations have been summarised.

  • Optical Trapping and Manipulation Using Optical Fibers
    • Abstract: Abstract An optical trap forms a restoring optical force field to immobilize and manipulate tiny objects. A fiber optical trap is capable of establishing the restoring optical force field using one or a few pieces of optical fiber, and it greatly simplifies the optical setup by removing bulky optical components, such as microscope objectives from the working space. It also inherits other major advantages of optical fibers: flexible in shape, robust against disturbance, and highly integrative with fiber-optic systems and on-chip devices. This review will begin with a concise introduction on the principle of optical trapping techniques, followed by a comprehensive discussion on different types of fiber optical traps, including their structures, functionalities and associated fabrication techniques. A brief outlook to the future development and potential applications of fiber optical traps is given at the end.

  • Enhancing Dehydration Performance of Isopropanol by Introducing
           Intermediate Layer into Sodium Alginate Nanofibrous Composite
           Pervaporation Membrane
    • Abstract: A novel three-tier composite membrane based on highly porous nanofibrous substrate was demonstrated for efficient isopropanol dehydration by pervaporation. Here, polyethyleneimine (PEI) modified graphene oxide (GO) sheets were vacuum-assistant assembled onto porous electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibrous substrate to achieve a smooth, hydrophilic and compact PEI-GO intermediate layer. The introduction of PEI chains endowed GO interlayer with sufficient interaction for bonding adjacent GO nanosheets to enhance stability in water/isopropanol mixture and also with the ascended interlamellar space to improve the water-sorption ability due to the abundant active amino groups. Benefiting from PEI-GO layer, a defect-free sodium alginate (SA) skin layer could be facilely manufactured with elaborately controlled thickness as thin as possible in order to reduce mass transfer resistant and enhance permeability maximally. Meanwhile, the interlayer would also contribute to enhance interfacial adhesion to promote the structure integrity of three-tier thin-film nanofibrous composite (TFNC) membrane in pervaporation dehydration process. After fine-tuning of membrane preparation process, the SA/PEI(75)-GO-60/PAN TFNC membrane exhibited competitive pervaporation performance with the permeate flux of 2009 g/m2 h and the separation factor of 1276 operated at 70 °C for dehydration of 90 wt% isopropanol solution. The unique three-tier composite membrane structure suggested an effective and facile approach to design novel membrane structure for further improvement of pervaporation performance. Graphic

  • Preparation and Characterization of Paclitaxel/Chitosan Nanosuspensions
           for Drug Delivery System and Cytotoxicity Evaluation In Vitro
    • Abstract: Abstract In this study, we prepared paclitaxel/chitosan (PTX/CS) nanosuspensions (NSs) with different mass ratios of PTX and CS (1.5:2, 2:2, and 2.5:2), for controlled drug delivery purposes. For attachment and dispersion in water medium, a simple ultrasonic disruption technique was employed. The water-dispersed PTX/CS NSs exhibited a rod-shape morphology with an average diameter of 170–210 nm and average length of about 1–10 µm. Transmission electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction indicated that the obtained PTX/CS NSs contain a nanocrystalline PTX phase. It was also inferred that presence of CS can promotes the crystalline nature of PTX up to 80%. In addition, efficiency of PTX loading reached over 85% in freeze-dried PTX/CS NSs, showing a slow rate of drug release in vitro for 8 days. The MTT and LDH assessments revealed that PTX/CS NSs significantly inhibit the growth of tumor cells (HeLa), while it is slightly toxic for the normal cells (NIH/3T3). Therefore, PTX/CS NSs is suggested as a potential nanodrug delivery system for cancer therapy. Graphic Abstract

  • [2 + 2] Photocycloaddition Reaction Regulated the Stability
           and Morphology of Hydrogels
    • Abstract: Photoresponsive supramolecular gels as intelligent non-invasive responsive materials can undergo changes in color, state, morphology and electronic properties upon photo irradiation, making them attractive for a variety of applications. Herein, a novel supramolecular hydrogelator DBE with 1,4-divinylbenzene as the central core, connected via amide linkage to l-phenylalanine and peripheral hydrophilic groups, was designed to evaluate the effect of [2 + 2] photocycloaddition reaction on supramolecular hydrogels. UV irradiation decreases the solubility of the hydrogelator DBE and hence, causes the destruction of the gel. SEM images clearly show that irradiation with UV light could induce disintegration of the right-handed helical nanofibers entangled network, which turns into nanoparticles and eventually massive crystals. Circular dichroism and vibrational circular dichroism data also indicate the formation of right-handed helical nanofibers in DBE gel. FTIR and MALDI–TOF–MS spectrum confirm that the variation of stability and aggregated morphology of DBE gel after UV irradiation is attributed to [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of vinyl units. This study presents a wonderful model for regulating the stability and aggregated morphology of supramolecular hydrogels via photo irradiation, as well as offers new ideas for designing novel photo responsive materials.   • Cellulose Nanofibrous Membranes Modified with Phenyl Glycidyl Ether for
           Efficient Adsorption of Bovine Serum Albumin
    • Abstract: Hydrophobic interaction chromatography (HIC) as an indispensable method for protein purification has attracted considerable attentions of researchers as well as biopharmaceutical industries. However, the low binding capacity and slow adsorption rate of the currently available HIC media lead to a little supply and high price of the highly purified proteins. Herein, nanofibrous membranes with hydrophobic binding sites were developed for HIC by directly coupling phenyl glycidyl ether on the hydrolyzed cellulose acetate nanofiber membrane (cellulose-phenyl NFM). Scanning electron microscope (SEM), water contact angle (WCA), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area analysis and capillary flow porometer (CFP) were applied to evaluate the physically and chemically structural transformation. The obtained cellulose-phenyl NFMs showed a proper hydrophilcity (WCA = 37°), a relatively high BET surface area (3.6 times the surface area of commercial fibrous membranes), and tortuous-channel structure with through-hole size in the range of 0.25–1.2 μm, which led to a little non-specificity adsorption, high bovine serum albumin adsorption capacity of 118 mg g−1, fast adsorption process within 12 h, good long-term stability and reusability. Moreover, compared with traditional modification methods which always include activation and graft two steps, direct coupling method is more efficient for HIC media fabrication. Therefore, cellulose-phenyl NFMs with outstanding protein adsorption performance could be a kind of promising candidate for HIC. Graphic

  • Advanced Functional Fiber and Smart Textile
    • Abstract: The research and applications of fiber materials are directly related to the daily life of social populace and the development of relevant revolutionary manufacturing industry. However, the conventional fibers and fiber products can no longer meet the requirements of automation and intellectualization in modern society, as well as people’s consumption needs in pursuit of smart, avant-grade, fashion and distinctiveness. The advanced fiber-shaped electronics with most desired designability and integration features have been explored and developed intensively during the last few years. The advanced fiber-based products such as wearable electronics and smart clothing can be employed as the second skin to enhance information exchange between humans and the external environment. In this review, the significant progress on flexible fiber-shaped multifunctional devices, including fiber-based energy harvesting devices, energy storage devices, chromatic devices, and actuators are discussed. Particularly, the fabrication procedures and application characteristics of multifunctional fiber devices such as fiber-shaped solar cells, lithium-ion batteries, actuators and electrochromic fibers are introduced in detail. Finally, we provide our perspectives on the challenges and future development of functional fiber-shaped devices. Graphic abstract

  • High-Performance 3-D Fiber Network Composite Electrolyte Enabled with
           Li-Ion Conducting Nanofibers and Amorphous PEO-Based Cross-Linked Polymer
           for Ambient All-Solid-State Lithium-Metal Batteries
    • Abstract: Solid electrolytes have gained attention recently for the development of next-generation Li-ion batteries since they can fundamentally improve the battery stability and safety. Among various types of solid electrolytes, composite solid electrolytes (CSEs) exhibit both high ionic conductivity and excellent interfacial contact with the electrodes. Incorporating active nanofibers into the polymer matrix demonstrates an effective method to fabricate CSEs. However, current CSEs based on traditional poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) polymer suffer from the poor ionic conductivity of PEO and agglomeration effect of inorganic fillers at high concentrations, which limit further improvements in Li+ conductivity and electrochemical stability. Herein, we synthesize a novel PEO based cross-linked polymer (CLP) as the polymer matrix with naturally amorphous structure and high room-temperature ionic conductivity of 2.40 × 10−4 S cm−1. Li0.3La0.557TiO3 (LLTO) nanofibers are incorporated into the CLP matrix to form composite solid electrolytes, achieving enhanced ionic conductivity without showing filler agglomeration. The high content of Li-conductive nanofibers improves the mechanical strength, ensures the conductive network, and increases the total Li+ conductivity to 3.31 × 10−4 S cm−1. The all-solid-state Li LiFePO4 batteries with LLTO nanofiber-incorporated CSEs are able to deliver attractive specific capacity of 147 mAh g−1 at room temperature, and no evident dendrite is found at the anode/electrolyte interface after 100 cycles. Graphic A highly ionic-conductive 3-D fiber network composite solid electrolyte is introduced based on Li-ion conducting nanofibers and amorphous poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) cross-linked polymer. With the reinforcement of Li0.3La0.557TiO3 (LLTO) nanofibers, the continuous 3D conduction network formed within the polymer matrix greatly enhances the electrochemical and mechanical properties of resultant composite solid electrolytes. Consequently, the lithium dendrite is effectively controlled after long cycles, and the all-solid-state Li LiFePO4 prototype cells demonstrate excellent cycling stability at room temperature.

  • Designing Textile Architectures for High Energy-Efficiency Human Body
           Sweat- and Cooling-Management
    • Abstract: Thermal management of textiles requires local microclimate control over heat and wet dissipation to create a comfortable thermal-wet environment at the interface of the human body and clothing. Herein, we design a fabric capable of both sweat- and cooling-management using a knitted fabric featuring a bilayer structure consisting of hydrophobic polyethylene terephthalate and hydrophilic cellulose fibers to simultaneously achieve high infrared (IR) transmittance and good thermal-wet comfort. The IR transmission of this cooling textile increased by ~ twofold in the dry state and ~ eightfold in the wet state compared to conventional cotton fabric. When the porosity changes from 10 to 47% with the comparison of conventional cotton fabric and our cooling textile, the heat flux is increased from 74.4 to 152.3 W/cm2. The cooling effect of the cooling fabric is 105% greater than that of commercial cotton fabric, which displays a better thermal management capacity for personal cooling. This bilayer design controls fast moisture transfer from inside out and provides thermal management, demonstrating high impact not only for garments, but also for other systems requiring heat regulation, such as buildings, which could mitigate energy demand and ultimately contribute to the relief of global energy and climate issues.   • Construction of Electrospun Organic/Inorganic Hybrid Nanofibers for Drug
           Delivery and Tissue Engineering Applications
    • Abstract: Electrospun nanofibers hold a great potential in biomedical applications due to their advantages of large specific surface area, good biocompatibility, easy fabrication and surface modification. In particular, organic/inorganic hybrid nanofibers exhibit enhanced mechanical properties and long-term sustained release or controlled release profile of encapsulated drugs, which enables hybrid nanofibers to serve as desired platform for drug delivery and tissue engineering applications. This review summarizes the recent progresses in the preparation, performances and applications of hybrid nanofibers as drug delivery vectors for antibacterial and antitumor therapy, and as nanofibrous scaffolds for bone tissue engineering or other types of tissue engineering applications. Nanofibers doped with various types of inorganic nanoparticles (e.g., halloysite, laponite®, nano-hydroxyapatite, attapulgite, carbon nanotubes, and graphene, etc.) are introduced and summarized in detail.   • Functionalization-Directed Stabilization of Hydrogen-Bonded Polymer
           Complex Fibers: Elasticity and Conductivity
    • Abstract: Elastic, repairable and conductive fibers are desirable in the newly emerging field of soft electronic and wearable devices. Here, we design a multifunctional fiber by incorporation of different components to optimize its performance. The combination of the poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) through hydrogen bonding endows the fiber with high elasticity and repairability. Polydopamine (PDA) significantly increases the stability of the fiber, thus the fiber will not dissolve in alkaline solutions and still keep the repairable ability. The fiber shows a reversible swelling-shrinking property as pH values go up and down. Further, the conductive component, carbon nanotube, is adsorbed at the swelling state and then is fastened with fiber shrinking. Graphic
