Based on this, the demand on the development of fault detection technologies was studied, and new methods were proposed with the application effects verified.

  • Topological Analysis of Space Network Using Burnside Theory
    • Abstract: Abstract The analysis of the co-orbit inter-satellite-link (ISL) topology plays an important role. ISL routing problem can be achieved by using difference topological method. Therefore, the choice of scientific, rigorous topology methods can have advantages of concepts clear and simple operation. Traditional ISL topology analysis was conducted using permutations and enumeration method. It can be easy to get the number of the ISL connecting types, but not intuitive enough for ISL connections with special configurations. In this paper, those issues are analyzed from a mathematical view, where all the ways of connecting are considered as a set M, while different angles of rotation of the track form a group G. We can see that the rotation caused by G makes a transformation of M, then G has a group action on M. Burnside theorem of modern algebra is used to calculate the number of tracks in this paper. As it can be seen from the theoretical analysis and calculation, the proposed method on the co-orbit ISL topology is clear and intuitive, easy operation, which can be well used in the satellite constellation network design.

  • Research on Adsorption Performance of Porous Materials Based on Ceramics
           to Organic Molecular Contamination
    • Abstract: Abstract In the space environment, spacecraft on orbit released a series of organic gas molecules by means of material outgassing, vacuum outgassing, eliminating propellant, and so on. These gas molecules can deposit on sensitive surface by direct transportation, reflection, atmospheric-scattering transportation, self-scattering transportation, and thermalization atmospheric-scattering transportation, such as optical elements, thermal control coating, and solar cell, which can result in decrease of the property even out of work. Contamination control was the trend of long-life and high-reliability spacecraft. As a new type of contamination control technology, molecular adsorber based on ceramics with convenient measuring, lightweight, low power consumption is a useful way of controlling contamination of spacecraft-sensitive device. There is not any study on molecular adsorber, although the molecular contamination test and simulation analysis have been researched by many people in China. This article analyses the adsorption mechanism study of porous material to organic molecular contamination in vacuum and studies the adsorption property study of porous material to organ-molecular contamination in vacuum. Through the method study of molecular adsorber absorption capability, the development of molecular adsorber is suggested.

  • Optimization Design of Configuration and Layout for Queqiao Relay
           Satellite
    • Abstract: Abstract According to the requirements of Chang’e 4 mission, the configuration and layout of Queqiao relay satellite are designed based on the mission analysis. The satellite’s shape, structure size, mechanical interface of launch vehicle adapter, module division, primary structure and equipment layout are determined. Based on small satellite’s platform and main structure, we optimized configuration and layout of structure size, solar array fixing, tank fixing, big antenna fixing. Combining with light-weighting technology and 3D printing technology, achieving a goal of zero-counterweight, the loading ratio reaches a high level of advanced small satellite. To pursue the tenet of “Simplicity, symmetry, and harmony”, the design ability is highlighted by combining the functionality and simplicity. It provides the reference to the similar satellite configuration and layout.

  • Link Performance Analysis of X-Ray Communication System
    • Abstract: Abstract Establishing the theoretical relationship between the unique properties of X-ray photon (large energy, non-dispersive, strong penetrability, etc.) and the link performance is the primary problem needed to be resolved in X-ray communication system design. This paper firstly outlines the research histories of X-ray communication at home and abroad, the effects of link parameters such as the detector sensitivity, the divergence angle and the propagation distance on the propagation loss are studied by numerical simulation. Then, the theoretical link equation of X-ray communication is derived, and the solutions to the key technologies which restricting X-ray communication performance are proposed in the end to provide theoretical support for X-ray application in large capacity and high reliable information transmission in space.

  • Research on Dual-Core Lock Step Mechanism and Its Application for
           Commercial High Performance APSoC
    • Abstract: Abstract With the rapid development of commercial satellites, the APSoC devices with the advantages of low cost, superior performance, high integration, and easy acquisition have become an important way to improve satellite performance and reduce satellite development cost. However, with the continuous reduction of the process size of this kind of device, among many radiation effects, the soft error caused by single event upset is an important factor threatening the reliability of the circuit. In this work, a Dual-Core Lock Step mechanism for commercial high performance APSoC is developed and proposed for mitigation of soft errors by SEU. Within the APSoC, the output of the two CPUs is periodically compared by the Checker module. When the outputs of the two CPUs are different, these two processors will be set to the last stored correct statue so that the system can recover from an error. This method can improve the ability of APSoC devices to deal with soft errors caused by SEU. A Markov process is used to analyze the reliability of DCLS mechanism. The model is simulated and tested by MATLAB. The results show that the reliability and mean time between failures of the DCLS technology meet the life requirements of low orbit satellites.

  • Micro-vibration Influencing Characteristic on Image Quality and Solutions
           for High-Resolution Satellites
    • Abstract: Abstract Micro-vibration has been a critical factor for image quality of high-resolution satellites, and with the increase of resolution, especially for the ultrahigh-resolution satellites, it is not enough to get high-quality images if only depends on front-end suppression. In this paper, the influencing characteristic of micro-vibration on image quality was first analyzed to provide guidance for micro-vibration suppression and image processing, including direction, amplitude, frequency, phase and TDI series. Then, several solutions were introduced to reduce the influence of micro-vibration on image quality in VRSS-2 from whole-path factors: disturbance sources, transmission path, sensitive payload and image processing, which can provide reference for system design of following ultrahigh-resolution satellites.

  • On-Orbit Measurement and Analysis of the Micro-vibration in a
           Remote-Sensing Satellite
    • Abstract: Abstract With the improvement of the image resolution produced by remote-sensing satellites, the cameras onboard are increasingly sensitive to the micro-vibration caused by the moving parts of the satellite buses. The disturbance measurement in ground tests is often with low confidence, since the dynamic characteristics of the moving parts as well as the satellite structure are strongly influenced by many environmental factors which are quite different in space, such as atmosphere pressure, air damping or acoustic transmission. Therefore, on-orbit micro-vibration measurement is an important way to learn the characteristics of the disturbing source and the micro-vibration transmission along with the satellite structure in vacuum and weightless environment. In the present study, the on-orbit micro-vibration measurement system onboard a remote-sensing satellite is introduced. The measured data are analysed in three aspects of background noise level, disturbance source characteristics, and satellite structure transmission characteristics. From the measured data, it is found that local vibration caused by control moment gyro (CMG) and momentum wheels have the highest level, while the vibration transmitted to the payload is mainly caused by CMG and two-axis antenna. The response at the payload interface is much lower than the disturbance source interface, which means that the vibration level is attenuated largely by the satellite structure.

  • Investigation on the Interface Smoothing of Coupled N–S/DSMC Method
           Using Image Processing Filters
    • Abstract: Abstract Gas flow problems involving both continuum and rarefied regimes are common in many scientific and engineering applications. Coupled N–S/DSMC method is a major solution to simulate the continuum–rarefied transitional flow. Interface determination is one of the key aspects in developing coupled N–S/DSMC solver, which is often implemented using continuum breakdown parameters to indicate the rarefication level. Due to the statistics characteristic of DSMC method, distribution of the continuum breakdown parameters usually fluctuates, resulting in difficulty in locating the interface. Considering the similarity between continuum breakdown parameter smoothing and noise reduction in image processing, a general smoothing method is proposed in this paper, which employs the image filters to smoothen the distribution of continuum breakdown parameters. Two commonly used image filters, the mean filter and the median filter, are investigated. Several comparison studies are implemented by simulating a typical vacuum plume impingement flow problem. The median filter with 5 × 5 mask provides the best performance. The flow problem of flow over a 2D cylinder is used to validate the coupled N–S/DSMC solver using median filter to smoothen continuum breakdown parameter, which proves the accuracy of the coupled solver and validity of the smoothing method.

  • Robotic Gripper for Payload Capture in Low Earth Orbit
    • Abstract: Abstract The consensus to a study phase for an Intermediate eXperimental Vehicle (IXV) successor, a preoperational vehicle called Space Reusable Integrated Demonstrator for European Return (SPACE RIDER), has been recently enlarged, as approved during last EU Ministerial Council. One of the main project tasks consists in developing SPACE RIDER to conduct on orbit servicing activity with no docking. SPACE RIDER would be provided with a robotic manipulator system (arm and gripper) able to transfer cargos, such as scientific payloads, from low Earth orbiting platforms to the SPACE RIDER cargo bay. The platform is a part of a space tug designed to move small satellites and other payloads from Low Earth Orbit to Geosynchronous Equatorial Orbit and vice versa. A study on this robotic technology is here presented. This research is carried out by Politecnico di Torino and Thales Alenia Space Italy. The system configuration of the robotic manipulator is first described in terms of volumes and masses. The considered housing cargo bay requirements in terms of volume (< 100 l) and mass (< 50 kg) combined with the required overall arm dimensions (4 m length), and mass of the cargo (5–30 kg) force to developing an innovative robotic manipulator with the task-oriented end-effector. It results in a 7df arm to ensure a high degree of dexterity and a dedicated end-effector designed to grasp the cargo interface. The gripper concept here developed consists in a multi-finger hand able to lock both translational and rotational cargo degrees of freedom through an innovative under-actuation strategy to limit its mass and volume. A configuration study on the cargo handle interface has also been performed together with some computer-aided design models and multibody analysis of the whole system to prove its feasibility. Finally, the concept of system control architecture is defined.

  • The Study on Reconfigurability Condition of Spacecraft Control System
    • Abstract: Abstract Reconfigurability refers to the ability of the system to overcome all faults or restore some of its performance by changing the structure or control algorithm under the condition of resource constraints and operating conditions within a certain period of time to ensure the security when the control system fails. The establishment of reconfigurability evaluation and design theoretical system is of great significance for improving the operational reliability and service life of the whole spacecraft. Research projects are being conducted worldwide regarding reconfiguration control technology. We summarize the performance factors that affect system reconfigurability based on several typical reconfiguration methods by analyzing the constraints that the system can satisfy through fault-tolerant approaches. Since the reconfigurability evaluation index reveals the limitations and potentials of reconfigurable ability of the system, we refine the quantitative reconfigurability evaluation method based on various influencing factors. We anticipate that this work will play a guiding role in the reconfiguration strategy and design of spacecraft in-orbit to achieve the fault forward.

  • Influence of Ultraviolet Irradiation on the Deposition of Spacecraft
           Molecular Contamination
    • Abstract: Abstract On the basis of physical process analysis of molecular contamination deposition under ultraviolet irradiation, the model of contamination quantity from organic material is proposed. Then ground experiment is performed on the molecular contamination deposition process irradiated by the ultraviolet using silicon rubber material, and the influence of ultraviolet irradiation on the contamination deposition of spacecraft is studied. It is shown from experimental results that the UV irradiation has a significant enhancement on the deposition of contamination, and this effect increases linearly with the radiation dose, but decreases with the deposition temperature.

  • The Status of the Operational Debris Mitigation Systems Regulatory Policy:
           Current Issues and Future Perspectives
    • Abstract: Abstract A strong and dynamic technological progress in the space sector is shaping a new set of rules, apting primarily to the preservation of the space environment and the savage exploitation of its resources. When focusing on what can be considered the greatest challenge of this still young century, the space debris issue, one cannot refrain from questioning whether such fast-moving technical and technological progress has a solid match in the current legal, policy and political framework: do they go hand in hand, or is the second structurally incapable of keeping up with the rapidly evolving nature of the first' The paper will involve a deep analysis and legal and policy issues for future operational debris mitigation systems, essential step to draft a set of specific rules, agreed at national and international level, for a governance and regulation framework. What is lacked is a soft law instrument, internationally agreed, that can enforce such decisions on States’ behalf, for the sake of the sustainability and ongoing security of the space environment. These aspects are very sensitive and they involve constraints in relation to the national sovereignty and to the identification of “commercial” actors that could invest and operate in these domains. The maritime law can offer some frame of reference to solve this issue. Specifically, the international law of salvage in high seas, as outlined in the International Convention on Salvage, IMO 1989, may establish a similar regime, in space, for abandoned spacecraft with. In this regard, the pivotal role of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in setting a regulation for the Active Debris Removal missions (ADR), in the years to come, should not be underplayed. Since this agency is in charge of promoting and coordinating the definition of technical standards, as well as of assigning satellite orbits, it might be able to establish itself as the referral organization for the issuing of finally binding space debris mitigation rules. It is crucial to have an institution capable of maintaining the balance (both technical and political) between multiple stakeholders, and security and environmental constraints. So much of the future of space activities will depend on how those rules will succeed in limiting the growing amount of floating debris in space.

  • Multi-asset System Design Methodology for Earth Observation
    • Abstract: Abstract To better understand the Earth environment and climate change, to mitigate its effects and to provide emergency services, ensuring civil security, future European Earth observation (EO) infrastructures will heavily rely on operational satellite missions. To ensure continuous and timely provision of spaceborne Earth-observation data, these missions will be characterized by high temporal resolution, high availability, low latency and enhanced synergies between different observation products. These goals will likely be achieved by deploying multi-asset satellite systems, such as constellations. In order to design robustly the architecture of these EO systems, given a certain set of observational requirements, OHB System AG has developed a methodology and the associated tools, to optimize the multi-asset system, taking into account physical and technical constraints. In general, for a specific repeating ground track Sun-synchronous orbit and a given number of spacecraft, one (or more) optimal orbital configuration(s) (i.e. anomaly separation on the same orbit) exists that allows achieving full global coverage in a prescribed number of days and minimizes the required swath size. The objective of this paper is to define the optimization model associated to this problem: the swath size is a key design parameter, most of the time constrained by mission requirements and/or technology readiness. Both Non Linear Programming and Mixed Integer Linear Programming are proposed to solve the optimization problem and are investigated in the paper: the formulation is derived and advantages and drawbacks of each are detailed. Finally, the two formulations are tested with different software and on multiple study cases: the effectiveness of the developed methodology is supported by application and validation examples.

  • Reviews and Prospect of International Electromagnetic Seismic Satellite
    • Abstract: Abstract A large number of space-to-earth observation results show that there is a clear correlation between the space electromagnetic disturbances and the occurrence of earthquakes. So, the application of satellite to capture electromagnetic precursors is one of the most effective means of short-term and impending earthquake prediction, which promotes the development of electromagnetic seismic satellites. Some countries have carried out satellite observations of space electromagnetic phenomena one after another. The phenomena of space electromagnetic anomalies observed before the earthquake were reported. In recent years, the international electromagnetic seismic satellite project mainly includes: PREDVESTNIK-E, COMPASS-II, QUAKESAT, DEMETER, etc. In this paper, the current status of the international electromagnetic seismic satellites in orbit is investigated. The management mission characteristics of electromagnetic seismic satellites are analyzed and summarized. The development plan of satellite projects in the field of electromagnetic earthquake monitoring is investigated. The development trend of satellite application in earthquake disaster monitoring is prospected.

  • Study of the Effect of an External Magnetic Field on the Accuracy of NMRG
    • Abstract: Abstract A theoretical model of nuclear magnetic resonance gyroscope (NMRG) has been established in this paper by the double noble gases in closed loop. The effect on the accuracy of NMRG by the external static magnetic field was analyzed. The fluctuation of the static magnetic field causes measurement error in the Earth’s rotary rate experiment. The atoms sense a constant magnetic field, when the fluctuation of the static magnetic field is compensated by the closed loop system. The results show that the Earth’s rotary rate measurement error decreases from 13.58 to 0.22°/h, which means 62 times, when the static magnetic field is compensated in closed loop. The fluctuation of the static magnetic field in the magnetic shield decreases 571 times. A higher accuracy of the NMRG is achieved when the fluctuation of the static magnetic field is effectively suppressed by the closed loop.

  • Review of Solar Magnetic Sailing Configurations for Space Travel
    • Abstract: Abstract A solar magnetic sailing spacecraft utilizes the interaction between solar wind and magnetic field that is generated by a loop of superconducting wire attached onboard of the spacecraft. The development of the working principle of solar magnetic sailing from MagSail to magnetospheric plasma propulsion and magneto-plasma-sail is reviewed and discussed to study their performance, focusing on its operation for interplanetary travel. The orbital dynamic of MagSail is elaborated to explore the probable trajectories of interest for space travel. Examples for MagSail interplanetary travel are discussed for insight and future continuing work.

  • An Efficient Model of Tethers for Tethered Satellite Systems
    • Abstract: Abstract This paper concerns about modeling of tethered satellites systems (TSS). In this paper, tethers of TSS are modeled as chains of elastic rods connected by rigid joints. A group of spatial vectors are used to describe displacement, orientation and deformation of the rods, which can avoid the coupling of trigonometric functions of Euler angles. The coordinates of spatial vectors are chosen as the generalized coordinates of system. Equations of motion are derived and written in explicit form. A computationally efficient algorithm is developed to solve equations of motion. Computational complexity of the developed algorithm is reduced to O(n) (n denotes the number of rods). A numerical experiment is performed. Results about energy show energy conservation principle is obeyed. The same numerical experiment is also performed utilizing multibody software ADAMS. Validity of the presented algorithm is demonstrated by comparing numerical results of the two methods.

  • Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) Global Satellite Observations of
           Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide and Methane
    • Abstract: Abstract Carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) are important atmospheric greenhouse gases (GHG) and, therefore, classified as essential climate variables (ECVs). Previously, satellite-derived atmospheric CO2 and methane CH4 ECV data sets have been generated and made available via the GHG-CCI project of the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Climate Change Initiative (CCI, http://www.esa-ghg-cci.org/). The latest GHG-CCI data set, Climate Research Data Package No. 4 (CRDP 4), covers the time period 2003–2015 and is available since February 2017. Currently, the production and provision of these data sets is being continued (pre-)operationally via the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S, https://climate.copernicus.eu/), which is implemented by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) on behalf of the European Commission. The C3S satellite GHG sub-project (C3S_312a_Lot6) is led by University of Bremen supported by University of Leicester (UK), SRON (The Netherlands) and CNRS-LMD (France). The first Climate Data Record (CDR) data set produced and delivered within the C3S framework covers the time period 2003–2016 and consists of column-average dry-air mole fraction CO2 and CH4 products, i.e., XCO2 and XCH4, from SCIAMACHY/ENVISAT and TANSO-FTS/GOSAT. Furthermore, mid-tropospheric CO2 and CH4 mixing ratios from IASI Metop-A and Metop-B are part of this data set. It is planned to extend this data set each year by one additional year. The data products are available via the Climate Data Store (CDS) of C3S. Here a short overview about this new Earth Observation data set is presented.
