  • From text to context: a comparative analysis of the descriptive and
           functional approaches of Translation Studies

The descriptive and functional approaches of Translation Studies contributed to the so-called “cultural turn” by proposing non-prescriptive ways of approaching translation and redirecting the study focus to the reception context. This paper provides a comparative analysis of the main aspects of these approaches, identifying common points and divergences in their theories. We start by analyzing its general proposals and then by comparing the main contributions of Gideon Toury and Christiane Nord to Translation Studies, in order to better understand the two proposals. Finally, we investigate the application of functionalist and discriptivist theories in translation research, based on the analysis of theses and dissertations.

  • Brasilien. Ein Land der Zukunft: two authors, two monographies, two
           Weltanschauungen

Our main objective is to present a study on Heinrich Schüler, a German-Brazilian author who published a detailed book about Brazil. With his idea of “Brazil, a country of the future”, he anticipated Stefan Zweig in almost three decades. A naturalized Brazilian, Schüler was Brazil’s consular representative in Bremen and assistant consul in Hamburg, where he taught university courses on Brazilian culture. Basing on research performed in Brazilian and German-Brazilian newspapers, we could compose a portrait of a man who transitioned between Brazilian and German diplomacy. Thus, he was well-regarded by some, but regarded with suspicion by others. If he showed himself to be a faithful citizen of Brazil, he also revealed himself to be a tireless defender of Germanism in Brazil. He defended the sending of “new German blood” to Brazil, in order to avoid that “the German-speaking colonies widely dispersed in the South of Brazil” had to be mixed “with the foreign elements”. Examining Schüler’s profile, we conclude that, if Zweig had read the consul’s monography as a preparatory reading, he must have subsequently been shocked by Schüler’s political ideas, since he would flirt with the Hitlerist intention of implanting Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (NSDAP - in English, National Socialist German Worker’s Party) cells in Brazilian German-speaking states.

  • Object and Subject in Siegfried Kracauer

This paper aims to explicit Siegfried Kracauer’s concept of critique during the inter-war period. It casts doubts on a currently widespread mode of interpretation, which claims to have found in his oeuvre significant traces of a postmodernism avant la lettre. The article examines Kracauer’s changing ideas on the subject-object relation as the founding elements for his notions of critique. First, it analyses the philosopher’s early anticapitalism within the frame of German Kulturkritik. Second, it features Kracauer’s own ideological critique of the very Kulturkritik aspects he maintained until circa 1925. Finally, it examines the form of Kracauer’s analysis of Modernity as conscious activations of categories that make up the objective structure of the historic world. Thus, it concludes that, in a way that turns out irreconcilable with postmodernist fashions, Kracauer derives his criterion of truth from the structure of the object.

  • Staging the European modernization: Toni Erdmann, by Maren Ade

This paper aims to analyze the German film Toni Erdmann (2016), by Maren Ade, in order to look at the way in which it probes into contemporary modernization processes in Europe. To do so, we also propose a reflection about the film’s appropriation of some of the elements of epic dramaturgy proposed by Bertolt Brecht. The final part of the essay suggests an approximation between the film and the play Mother Courage and her children (Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder, 1939).

  • The existence as result of chances in Brother of sleep, by Robert
           Schneider

Brother of sleep (Schlafes Bruder) is the first novel by the Austrian writer Robert Schneider, published in 1992. It tells the story of a music prodigy, who was born in a small village at the beginning of the nineteenth century. This paper aims to reflect on the series of obstacles that stop the protagonist, Elias Alder, from achieving professional and personal success, given the limitations of the community. The novel condenses modern and post-modern characteristics, such as the identity fragmentation, the irony, the estrangement and the breaking of narrative linearity.

  • “If in doubt, always comical”: the theatre of Elfriede Jelinek

The comical dimension is a neglected aspect of the Brazilian reception of Elfriede Jelinek’s work, despite receiving more and more prominence in international academic works. The purpose of this paper is to argue that the comical potential is not a secondary factor in the work of the Austrian writer, but essential in the context of her political-enlightening project. In this sense, this paper presents some possible approaches to several categories of the comical that can be identified in Jelinek’s theatre texts. The arguments are based on examples of four pieces written by Jelinek, all thematizing the role of women in a patriarchal and capitalist society.

  • The deconstruction of Enlightened education in Heinrich von Kleist

The Enlightenment pedagogy aimed to discuss the means of educating the human being both for good and intellectual independence, based on the principles of moral laws and of the supreme good. Thus, philosophy at that time has set the total responsibility of man for his acts as a parameter of its pedagogy, which entailed the indispensability of an education that has undergone a positive transformation in human nature, based on the maxim of moral judgement. Initially adept at such proposal, Heinrich von Kleist, right after his famous "Kantian crisis", began to contest the Enlightenment education model from a skeptical bias, since, for the author, the Kantian criticism showed the failures of this pedagogy according to a new view of reality. From this new perspective, the notions of freedom and morality assumed a new characterization, since it became impossible for Kleist to determine the results of these educational projects on human conduct. In face of this scenario, we will analyze in this paper two exemplary texts of how the author transposes such discussion into literature: in Allerneuster Erziehungsplan, Kleist inverts the logic of this education by proposing a "school of vice", whereas in Der Findling, the author contests the bourgeois moral values of family and supreme good, leading to a text full of violence and evil.

  • What “a girl”, “one girl” and “Ø girl” have in common:
regarding the relevancy of typological language correlations in the
transfer to L2 German from typologically different languages

Whether for exchanging interpersonal needs -such as thoughts- or for business purposes -as in the case of the Lingua franca- in its specific form language has always been presumed to be the human species’ means for communication. With the concurrent rise in demand for multilingualism in the 20th century, studies examining language acquisition have garnered ever-greater interest. Research into German as a second language (L2) with different mother tongues (L1) began in the 1980’s (see Meisel 1975). In the beginning of the 19th century, the importance of morphotypological differences between languages was first examined (Schlegel 1818). This study investigates the correlation of similarity or non-similarity in linguistic systems (L1: Turkish, Spanish, Vietnamese, and L2: German) with respect to language transfer processes as inter-comprehension and interference errors. The ability of foreign speakers of German to maintain subject and predicate congruence, as well as to formulate grammatical articles, is examined. The results show that for both areas, there exists a correlation between structural similarity and differences which influences transfer processes between L1 and L2. The study shows that native speakers of Spanish demonstrate fewer interference errors than native speakers of Vietnamese, which have the highest number of interference errors.
