Factors Explaining the Integration, Identity and Sense of Belonging to Spanish Society among Youth Immigrants in Huelva
- Abstract: In this article on the social processes of integration in adolescents and youth, we describe and explain the factors which, in a representative sample of 413 immigrant adolescents in Huelva, Spain, are linked to having a sense of belonging to Spain. Approximately fifty percent of those interviewed reported a sense of belonging to Spain, although the degree of belonging to this country was lower or non-existent in other cases. This paper attempts to delimit the elements that largely explain the degree of the sense of belonging to a country, which is crucial to understanding the processes of identificative integration. We found several variables linked to the sense of belonging to Spain: life satisfaction, structural opportunities perceived in Spain, orientation towards the Spanish language (monolingual or bilingual), multiple territorial identification, participation in Spanish celebrations and activities, and trust in Spanish people.En este artículo, enmarcado en los procesos de integración de adolescentes y jóvenes inmigrantes, describimos y explicamos los factores que, en una muestra representativa de 413 menores inmigrantes en Huelva y provincia, se encuentran ligados al hecho de sentirse pertenecientes a España. La mitad de los entrevistados declararon sentirse parte de este país, mientras que el grado de pertenencia expresado fue intermedio o nulo en el resto de los casos. Este trabajo trata de deslindar los elementos que en mayor medida contribuyen a explicar el grado de sentimiento de pertenencia al país, siendo conscientes de la importancia que esto tiene para entender los procesos de integración identificativa. Las principales variables que se encontraron asociadas al sentimiento de pertenencia a España fueron la satisfacción con la vida, las oportunidades estructurales percibidas en este país, la orientación hacia el idioma nacional (monolingüismo y bilingüismo), una identificación territorial múltiple u orientada a España, la participación en celebraciones y actividades del país, así como la confianza hacia los españoles.
Is More Necessarily Better': Leadership and Organizational Development of Migrant Hometown Associations in Los Angeles, California
- Abstract: Hometown associations (HTAS) in the United States are migrant, voluntary groups with a shared sense of belonging to a region in a different country of origin. Their philanthropic activities across borders have increasingly attracted the attention of government agencies and social and political actors. These actors have endeavored to form more HTAS and place greater demands on them to expand their civic engagement. This strategy, however, will not necessarily lead to that purpose, but instead will likely exacerbate a critical gap in the HTAS' organizational capacity. Th is paper argues that a different strategy is best suited to strengthen the organizational ability of HTAS, and proposes a framework to achieve this goal based on a capacity building pilot program for Latino HTAS from the Los Angeles region.Las asociaciones de paisanos en Estados Unidos son grupos de migrantes voluntarios basados en un sentimiento compartido de pertenencia a una región en un país de origen distinto. Sus actividades han llamado cada vez más la atención de instancias gubernamentales y de actores sociales y políticos. Estos actores han favorecido la formación de más de estos grupos, junto con una creciente demanda sobre ellos para que expandan sus compromisos cívicos. Sin embargo, esta estrategia no conduce necesariamente a ello, e incluso podría disminuir la capacidad organizativa de las asociaciones. A partir de un programa piloto basado en la formación de capacidades con asociaciones de migrantes latinos en Los Ángeles, aquí argumentamos que se requiere una estrategia distinta para que las HTAS amplíen su capacidad organizativa.
The Role of Economic and Social Remittances in Colombian Transnational Families
- Abstract: Este artículo recoge parte de los resultados de una investigación sobre el papel de las remesas económicas y sociales en las familias migrantes transnacionales colombianas del Área Metropolitana Valle de Aburrá y Área Metropolitana Centro Occidente, con algunos de sus miembros en la comunidad de Madrid, en España. En la primera parte se desarrollan los conceptos clave que han sido utilizados en el análisis desde el paradigma transnacional. A continuación se presentan los objetivos y la metodología y, por último, se exponen algunos resultados en torno de la influencia de las remesas económicas y sociales en los procesos de transformación y permanencia de las relaciones y prácticas tradicionales de género, así como en las relaciones intergeneracionales, teniendo en cuenta: 1) el tipo de familia al que pertenecían las/os entrevistadas/os antes de la partida de la/el migrante, y 2) la dimensión temporal dentro del proceso migratorio.This article summarizes the results of our research about the influence of social and economic remittances on the transformation and continuity of gender and intergenerational relations and practices inside Colombian transnational families, in a context that includes the Área Metropolitana Valle de Aburrá, the Área Metropolitana Centro Occidente in Colombia, and the community of Madrid, in Spain. Our approach to sampling took into account the family typology to which respondents belonged before migration, and the diacronical dimension during the migration process, the pre-migration stage, and the migration stage in a transnational context.
Social Perception of Risk and Protection Factors for the Children of Emigrant Mothers: A Study in the Dominican Republic
- Abstract: The feminization of work-related migration alters family roles and relationships and has a direct impact on the development of the children left behind. The purpose of this study is to show the risk and protection factors perceived in Dominican society for children when the mother emigrates. Risk factors include a lack of mother-child communication; being demanding in relationships; and an anomalous substitute family atmosphere. Conversely, protection factors encompass frequent communication with the mother; an affectionate relationship between the guardian and the child; when the guardian is a family member who is very close to the mother and the promotion of values such as thrift, effort and sacrifice. The results of social perception coincide with existing literature, but it is debatable whether the factors perceived are actually those that most affect the psychological and social development of children left behind by migration.La feminización de la migración laboral altera los roles y relaciones familiares e impacta en el desarrollo de los niños que quedan en el lugar de origen. El objetivo del estudio es mostrar los factores de riesgo y de protección percibidos en la sociedad dominicana para los hijos cuando emigra la madre. Como factores de riesgo destacan: la falta de comunicaciones entre madre e hijo; ser exigente en las relaciones; y el ambiente familiar sustituto anómalo. En cambio, son factores de protección: la comunicación frecuente con la madre y las relaciones afectuosas entre la tutora y el hijo. Cuando ésta es un familiar muy cercano a la madre, fomenta valores como el ahorro, el esfuerzo y el sacrificio. Los resultados de la percepción social coinciden con la literatura existente, pero se discute si los factores percibidos son los que más afectan el desarrollo psicosocial de los niños que quedan atrás por la migración.
Cultural Racism and Representations of Central American Immigrants in Chiapas
- Abstract: Este artículo muestra el modo en que las expresiones del cuerpo enculturado (etnicidad, género y nacionalidad) operan como representaciones en el proceso migratorio. Es un estudio de carácter antropológico sobre mujeres inmigrantes en Chiapas que recurre a la perspectiva del racismo cultural. En el análisis se observa cómo las guatemaltecas, hondureñas y salvadoreñas se enfrentan a las representaciones de su otredad al estar en territorio mexicano. Este trabajo es resultado de una estancia posdoctoral en El Colegio de la Frontera Sur.This article shows how embodiment (ethnicity, gender and nationality) works as representations in the migratory process. This anthropological study about immigrant women in Chiapas uses the perspective of cultural racism. The analysis focuses on the way women from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador deal with representations of their otherness in Mexican territory. This work is the result of a postdoctoral research in Ecosur.
Habitus and Transnational Fields in the Process of Migrant Transnationalism
- Abstract: En sus estudios sobre transnacionalismo, Alejandro Portes sostiene que, una vez iniciada la migración, surgen redes sociales entre los migrantes y sus localidades de origen que con el tiempo permiten que este movimiento se sostenga por sí mismo. Además recalca que este mismo impulso puede apoyar a la continuidad de la migración, aun cuando los incentivos económicos originales se hayan reducido o desaparecido por completo. Por otro lado, la escuela de pensamiento sociológico de Pierre Bourdieu afirma que, en los procesos sociales y los socioespacios creados por el individuo, las trayectorias no son uniformes y suponen una relación de homología entre los diversos habitus que comparten una misma posición en representaciones distintas o campos sociales. Nuestro análisis se adhiere a la segunda escuela mencionada, toda vez que ésta no ha sido ampliamente divulgada entre los estudiosos de la migración transnacional.In his studies on transnationalism, Alejandro Portes argues that once the migration, emerging social networks between migrants and their places of origin, which over time allow the movement was sustained by itself. In addition it emphasizes that this momentum can support the continued migration even when the original economic incentives have been reduced or disappeared altogether. Furthermore, the school of sociological thought of Pierre Bourdieu argues that social processes and socioespacios created by the individual paths are not uniform, which represent a relationship of homology between the habitus that share the same position in or represent different social fields. Our analysis adheres to the second school mentioned, since it has not been widely disseminated among scholars of transnational migration.
Inter-cultural Integration in Spain: Democratic Constitutional Miscegenation
- Abstract: Este trabajo define los conceptos de multiculturalismo e interculturalidad como el marco para la integración de inmigrantes dentro del ordenamiento jurídico español. La interculturalidad es una solución al multiculturalismo (existencia de varias culturas en el mismo territorio). La interculturalidad es entendida como diálogo entre las culturas en situación de igualdad (desde el punto de vista formal), y la configuramos como una fase previa y al servicio del denominado parámetro mestizaje constitucional democrático, que vendría a conformarse como el verdadero instrumento jurídico a la hora de resolver los conflictos que plantea el respeto a la identidad cultural y a los derechos humanos en relación con las minorías o la integración de inmigrantes.This work defines the multiculturalism and interculturality concepts as the framework for the integration of immigrants within the Spanish legal ordering. The interculturality is a solution to the multiculturalism (existence of several cultures in the same territory). The interculturality is understood like dialogue between the cultures equally (from the formal point of view). The interculturality we formed like a previous phase and to the service of the denominated parameter democratic constitutional mestization that would come to form itself like the true legal instrument at the time of solving the conflicts that raise the respect to the cultural identity and the respect to the human rights in relation to the minorities or the integration of immigrants.
Beyond Chapala and Cancún: Grappling with the Impact of American Migration to Mexico
- Abstract: Over the past two decades, a twist in the migratory relationship between Mexico and the United States has begun to attract the attention of policy makers and scholars: a growing stream of people moving permanently or semi-permanently from the United States to Mexico. The general understanding of this phenomenon until recently has been that these migrants are wealthy retirees moving to isolated resort-type complexes in beach cities. However, the present paper demonstrates that the migration is actually heterogeneous in terms of its people, places and impacts. Thus, we argue that study of the phenomenon must be expanded to include not only a better understanding of the migrants themselves, but also the impacts on the receiving localities. To this end, we propose a framework for a research agenda, creating a typology of receiving places and the settlements within these places.A lo largo de las dos últimas décadas, un viraje en la relación migratoria entre México y Estados Unidos ha comenzado a captar el interés de políticos e investigadores: se trata del flujo en el aumento de estadounidenses que se trasladan a vivir a México de manera temporal o permanente. Hasta hace poco, la interpretación general de este fenómeno era que se trataba de migrantes jubilados y solventes que se dirigían a centros turísticos exclusivos en diversas ciudades costeras. Este trabajo pone de manifiesto que esta migración es en extremo heterogénea en cuanto a las personas, los destinos y sus efectos. Además argumenta que el análisis de este fenómeno debería enfocarse no sólo en los migrantes sino también en el impacto del flujo migratorio sobre las localidades receptoras. Con este fin, se propone un esquema para una nueva línea de investigación con una tipología de las localidades receptoras y sus asentamientos. Esta tipología nos permite acceder a la literatura académica para la investigación de la migración de estadounidenses a México.
Moroccan Migrants and Development in their Country of Origin: Co-development through a Rural Tourism Project
