  • Amphibians and Reptiles associated to five land coverages, municipality of
           Dibulla, La Guajira, Colombia

Abstract: This study was conducted to determine the composition and structure of amphibians and reptiles of the rural municipality of Dibulla, La Guajira, associated to five land cover with different degrees of disturbance. Forty samples were made between March and October 2012 using standardized techniques for monitoring amphibians and reptiles (VES and audio strip transect), on the coverage of the identified and selected land. A total of 22 species of amphibians and 40 species of reptiles were recorded in the study area of 20 km2, representing between 31 and 50% of the species recorded for the Caribbean and Bs-t in Colombia. The coverage discontinuous urban fabric (ZU), contained higher species richness (21 amphibians and 33 reptiles) and greater proportional abundance (Hʼ = 2.83; H' max = 3.98; J' = 0.71); the values of equity (J') occurred in the range of 0.66 to 0.76 between different land coverages. No significant differences in diversity (Hʼ) between the ZU coverage and fragmented floodplain forest with secondary vegetation (Bfi) (t 0.05(2)18198246.5 = 1.96); Cultivation palm coverage (CP) and Mosaic flood grasses and temporal crops with hedges of trees and shrubs (MPC) (t 0.05(2)7370.49 = 1.96). The land coverages that had a close relationship (IJ = 0.68) were the CP association and mosaic weedy grasses with hedges of trees and shrubs (MP), while the lowest ratio was the association Bfi and MP (IJ = 0.55). The reptiles were the most diverse group and amphibians recorded the highest abundance values during the study. The present study is the first contribution concerning the composition of the herpetofauna for this location; the richness of amphibians and reptiles can be considered high in relation to other studies in La Guajira, although the composition of amphibians and reptiles showing the greatest abundance are recorded as wide distribution species and tolerant to environments with different degrees of disturbance, and are considered generalists. This shows the need for studies aimed at assessing the status of biodiversity in this locality with other approaches for generate a closer understanding of the impact of land use on land cover and diversity associated, without omitting more complex changes as biotic homogenization.
  • Predation by Podisus maculiventris (Say) on Choristoneura rosaceana
           (Harris) larvae

Its control depends mainly on the use of chemical insecticides; however, there are reports of natural enemies of this pest that exert a considerable control. The main objective of study was to evaluate the predatory capacity by Podisus maculiventris (Say) on C. rosaceana larvae. Twelve hundred larvae of C. rosaceana were collected in apple orchards. Moreover, 87 specimens of P. maculiventris Say of different nymphal instars were collected, of which 75 specimens were collected in apple orchards and 17 in corn crops, and 22 egg groups (17 in corn crops and five in apple trees). Podisus maculiventris consumption bioassays were performed over C. rosaceana larvae, where average was 0.72 larvae consumed per day, first nymphal instar showed a higher average (1.9 larvae per day) in first 24 h, and second nymphal instar showed a higher average after 7 d (1.2 larvae consumed per day).

  • Evaluation of epididymal spermatic quality of hippopotamus Hippopotamus
amphibius (Artiodactyla: Hippopotamidae) located in the Colombian Middle

Abstract: Common hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) is a mammal of the Artiodactyla order, living in Africa, with a declining population globally. With genetic conservation purposes, there have been processes of reproductive biotechnology, among which it is reported, recovery of sperm by methods as electroejaculation and extraction from the epididymis. This mammal is considered an exotic and invasive species was introduced in Colombia 1985; currently it reproduces out of control in the Middle Magdalena region. As a means of population control, it has performed the surgical sterilization of some specimens. The aim of this study was to evaluate different sperm and histological parameters related with epididymal semen quality of common hippopotamus located in the Colombian Middle Magdalena. Two hippopotamus were surgically orchiectomized and sperm were recovered by the combined methods of retrograde washing and medium injection. It was evaluated the sperm motility (SCA(r) system), the sperm vitality and morphology (supravital test), the mitochondrial membrane potential (JC-1), the acrosomal integrity (FITC-PNA), and the structural (SYBR14 / IP) and functional (HOS test) plasmatic membrane integrity. Also histological analysis of testis and epididymis were performed. Except for progressive motility, functional membrane integrity and sperm morphology, very similar results for semen quality parameters for both individuals were found. The predominant sperm abnormalities were cytoplasmic droplet and coiled tail. Histological analysis showed an active spermatogenesis process. We conclude that, after orchiectomy in common hippopotamus located in a non-native habitat, epididymal sperm extraction allows to obtain good quality sperm samples.

  • Frequency of tail loss in assembly lizards of Oaxaca, Mexico

Abstract: The present study evaluated the influence of age, sex and habitat on the frequency of tail loss in three species of endemic lizards to Mexico. The treated taxa are Sceloporus bicanthalis, S. subpictus and mesaspis gadovii and are sympatric in the mountains of the Central Valley of Oaxaca. The differences in the frequency of tail loss were evaluated by sex, age, habitat and species by Chi square test on a sample size of 259 organisms collected between April 2010 and March 2011. The results indicate that habitat structure, sex or age of individuals (except in Mgadovii) did not influence significantly in the frequency of mutilation of the tail in the three species analyzed. However, significant differences between species occur, these differences may be the result of agonistic behavior of each species, and of a pressure of predation different for each taxon.
  • Military macaw ( Ara militaris ) in Sierra
           Gorda, Guanajuato, Mexico

    • Abstract: Abstract: I report a new displacement route of the Military macaw (Ara militaris) population located in Sotano del Barro (Querétaro) to the northeastern Guanajuato. This record suggests that Military macaw perform seasonal movements in search of foraging areas between the Sotano del Barro in Xichú (Guanajuato), my study area. Therefore, the presence of Military macaw in the region would have direct implications for policy change in land use, which directly affects the land management of the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve.
  • Great kiskadee ( Pitangus sulphuratus ) in the
           Mexican Highland Plateau

    • Abstract: Abstract: The Great kiskadee (Pitangus sulphuratus) has a continuous distribution in both slopes of Mexico, mainly in tropical zones. As a result of monthly samplings from December 2006 to August 2013, we report the occurrence of this species in eastern Aguascalientes and the Highland Plateau region of San Luis Potosi. Based on these records, we suggest that this species can be considered as a resident for this region, thus suggesting that its geographic distribution could be extended to the central plateau of Mexico.
  • First record of Eleutherodactylus nivicolimae (Amphibia:
Eleutherodactylidae) for the state of Michoacán, México

    • Abstract: Abstract: We report the first record of Eleutherodactylus nivicolimae for the state of Michoacán, extending the distribution range of this species.
  • Diet of Cyclura nubila nubila Gray, 1831 (Squamata: Iguanidae) in two cays
of Jardines de la Reina archipelago, Cuba

    • Abstract: Abstract: Cyclura nubila nubila is an endemic subspecies of Cuba and it has been listed as Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List. The present investigation was developed in November 2013 and February 2014 in Caguamas and Palomo cays, respectively. Thirty-seven fecal pellets were collected through fixed transects on sandy coast vegetation and subsequently moistened with water and alcohol to separate and identify diet's components. Nine species of plants in Caguamas and four in Palomo were identified as part of iguana's diet. The most frecuent plant species were Conocarpus erectus, Setaria parviflora and Thalassia testudinum in Palomo and Cochorus hirsutus in Caguamas. In Palomo 45% of fecal pellets contained corporal parts of dragonflies and 5% parts of crabs. The consumption of animal matter is due to the low floristic diversity of Palomo cay. The iguana's diet in Caguamas included more plant components mainly fruits. This study contributes to increase knowledge of trophic ecology and management of the species in the archipelago of Jardines de la Reina.

  • Confirmation of the presence of rattlesnake Crotalus scutulatus for the
           State of Mexico, Mexico

    • Abstract: Abstract: We present a new record of rattlesnake Crotalus scutulatus collected in the county of La Paz, Mexico, that confirms the presence of the species for the Mexican state of Mexico. There is a dubious prior record of a specimen collected on 1967. Either way this species has not been collected again until now.
  • Noteworthy record of Aramides axillaris (Gruiformes, Rallidae) in the edge
of Sierra Sur of Oaxaca, Mexico

    • Abstract: Abstract: Through the use of camera traps we recorded the presence of an individual of the rufous-necked wood rail (Aramides axillaris) on the edge of Sierra Sur and coastal plains of the Pacific in the state of Oaxaca. This record is remarkable for two reasons: the altitude and the vegetation, so the present record is the highest for Mexico (834 msnm) and the first for semideciduous tropical forest.
