  • A conceptual framework implementing An AS9100 quality management system
           for the aerospace industry

    • Abstract: This article proposes, through an extensive review of prominent International Organization for Standardization (ISO) literature, a conceptual framework implementing an AS9100 quality management system (QMS) for the aerospace industry. The conceptual framework developed in this study provides systematic collective knowledge for aerospace industries to understand the most important dimensions, and their mutual relationships, to deliver products and services ensuring customer satisfaction. The article presents a three-phase implementation methodology for achieving sustained success, offering useful practical relevance for any aerospace industry. The approach followed in this study can be used as a foundation for future studies in AS9100 QMS implementation.

  • An artificial intelligence and knowledge-based system to support the
           decision-making process in sales

    • Abstract: The purpose of this article is to describe the development of a knowledge-based system that, aided by rules, can support the decision-making processes of the sales department of a company. The knowledge-based system can bring reliability and agility to the decision-making process, and can allow for simulating future scenarios for the company, according to the combined behaviour of key variables. All variables identified in the study have some degree of importance for the decision-making process; they must be analysed together to produce a reliable answer, otherwise, an incorrect decision can emerge, damaging the execution of the company's strategy. The main contribution of this study is a case report in which a knowledge-based system helped to find an adequate alternative to a business problem in the sales sector of a company in the south of Brazil.

  • Medical device innovation in South Africa: Evolution of collaboration
           networks (2001-2013)

    • Abstract: The evolution of medical device development in South Africa was investigated for the period 2001-2013. Collaboration networks for four sectors - academia, healthcare, industry, and science and support - were derived from a bibliometric study. Centrality measures identified dominant institutions. New actors entering the networks either exhibited preferential attachment to these institutions, or joined the network as part of an isolated cluster. Of the new institutions, foreign collaborators seldom stayed beyond five years, while local institutions seldom left after entering the field. Over the 13-year period, local collaboration activity persisted, while local-foreign collaborations were seen to decline. Over time, the network topology became more akin to that of a small-world network. The findings of the study may support innovation management by guiding institutional strategies for effective collaboration.

  • A DCOR-based NPD process redesign approach with grounded theory
           evaluation

    • Abstract: This research proposes a benchmarking-based process redesign approach for a new product development (NPD) process. The proposed method compares the semantic similarities of the design activities in the as-is NPD process with the activities in the design chain operations reference-model (DCOR). Then a design structure matrix (DSM) is employed to streamline the redesigned NPD process and form a to-be NPD process. Finally, grounded theory is used to evaluate the to-be NPD process according to five key performance indicators and to identify the pros and cons for the redesign changes. An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) NPD process is used for case study and the results show that the to-be UAV NPD process is more effective than the as-is UAV NPD process.

  • Assessing performance of automobile industry using Malmquist
           productivity index with R

    • Abstract: The aim of this study is to measure the performance of the top ten automobile manufacturers for the years 2011 to 2016. After evaluating the data from annual reports, only six manufacturers meet the requirements. The Malmquist productivity index (MPI) is used as the measurement of performance. The MPI consists of two elements: the technical efficiency change index (TECI) and the technological change index (TCI). The 'productivity' package in the open-source programming language known as 'R' is used to estimate the MPI, TCI, and TECI with input and output orientations. The results suggest that the productivity of the automobile industry increased during the period under evaluation. The average productivity scores for the top three manufacturers are as follows: Toyota (1.4844), Volkswagen (1.3382), and Mercedes-Benz (1.4444). However, there are still some industries whose productivity score is less than 1: Ford (0.9846), Honda (0.9925), and Nissan (0.9999). The newness of this study stems from the use of MPI in the global automobile industry, using R language, an open-source application for processing data.

  • User experience of a stylus pen that can provide the texture of pen and
           paper

    • Abstract: There is a lot of investment in research on displaying texture through a stylus pen. However, little is known about the effect of a stylus pen that can provide the texture of pen and paper on user experience. This study investigated whether there is a change in user experience when using a stylus pen that can provide pen-and-paper texture compared with a typical stylus pen. Experiments involving writing and drawing tasks using three tools (a stylus pen that can provide pen-and-paper texture, a typical stylus pen, and analogue pen and paper) were conducted, and user experiences were compared. After a literature review that examined the factors affecting the experience of using a pen, the experiments were conducted to measure usability and emotions. We found little difference between the typical stylus pen and the stylus pen in providing texture in respect of completion time and amount of error. However, the stylus pen that can provide texture showed results closer to those of the analogue pen and paper, and better results than those of the typical stylus pen in respect of familiarity and overall satisfaction of the usability and emotional variables. Therefore, this study confirmed that user experience is improved when using a stylus pen that can provide the texture of pen and paper.

  • An integrated system for process-fixture layout design optimisation for
           cubical parts

    • Abstract: In this article, an integrated computer-assisted process-planning and computer-assisted fixture layout planning system is presented for the automatic generation of process and fixture maps. The part feature model is created using various algorithms and the geometric reasoning approach. The feature-based methodology based on the machining database is then applied for the generation of process maps. The setup scheme algorithm allocates each feature to a definite setup based on its location. The part geometric database and setup plan aids the fixture layout planning process. During fixture layout planning, the standard fixture rules are applied to determine the locating arrangement and feasible datum along with the suitable positions using a fixture database for initial fixture layout planning data. Visual C++ is used to implement the proposed methodology because it interacts with current computer-aided design software. Then a case study is presented to develop an initial fixture layout. Afterwards, the ANSYS parametric design language optimisation tool is applied to automatically optimise locator and clamp positions that yield minimum workpiece deformation.

  • A project management investigative framework establishing links for
           better project outcomes

    • Abstract: This paper makes a contribution to knowledge by proposing a project management (PM) investigative framework with seven constructs and 60 sub-scales. The research consisted of an eight-step process. First, a project management assessment (PMA) tool was developed through an extensive literature review. Second, the PMA tool was evaluated through an expert panel. Third, the PMA tool was used to evaluate 330 projects, producing 330 PMA results. Fourth, an investigative framework linking the different PMA constructs was developed and tested. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to find links in the investigative framework for each of the PMA constructs, and 19 hypotheses were tested, all of which were accepted. The results provide interesting lessons for researchers and for project management practitioners. Finally, a discussion of the results, the study's limitations, and suggestions for further research are presented.

  • Evaluation of the cost drivers and allocation framework in outbound
logistics of the fast-moving consumer goods industry

    • Abstract: The fast-moving consumer goods industry is a complex trading environment, with many companies experimenting with various ways to increase profit. Outbound logistics, as an integrated concept within supply chain management, remains a key focus area for companies due to the high costs involved. The reality, however, is that often companies do not understand the outbound logistics cost drivers, and hence the profitability of current (let alone new) channels, regions, products, and customers. This is simply due to insufficient information being available from traditional accounting statements. The study evaluates the outbound logistics cost drivers of the South African fast-moving consumer goods industry, and describes an outbound logistics cost allocation framework. Dit is bloot as gevolg van onvoldoende inligting beskikbaar vanaf tradisionele rekeningkundige state.

  • A case for implementing self-organising traffic signal control on South
           African roads

    • Abstract: Traffic signal optimisation may lead to the alleviation, to some extent, of urban traffic congestion, particularly by using real-time data rather than expected traffic flow data. Recent advances in radar technology have made it possible to observe detailed traffic flow data in and around roadway intersections in real time. The notion of self-organisation has relatively recently been proposed as a promising alternative to improve the effective allocation of green time, particularly under lighter traffic conditions. A fixed-time control strategy and seven self-organising algorithms are compared in a microscopic traffic simulation model of a provincial road in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Actual arrival rates are used as input for the model, while the algorithms are compared using six performance measure indicators, under both light and moderate traffic conditions. The results are used to make a case for the adoption of self-organising traffic signal control algorithms, especially under conditions of light to moderate traffic densities, since this can lead to significant improvements in traffic flow in terms of delay time, vehicle stops, and time spent travelling at unacceptably slow speeds through the road network.

  • Integrating qualitative and quantitative factors in supplier selection and
           performance evaluation

    • Abstract: Companies need to cooperate with reliable and high-performing suppliers of goods and services, and build mutual long-term relationships in order to sustain their existence and increase their market share. An engineering manager can determine the most effective strategy in supplier selection by the proposed model, which allows an integration of objective values and the uncertainty of human judgements. A two-stage integrated fuzzy analytic network process (FANP) and super-efficiency data envelopment analysis (DEA) model is proposed and applied to a wind turbine project of a company operating in the renewable energy sector. At the first stage of the methodology, the weights of the qualitative criteria were determined by using FANP. At the second stage, the qualitative supplier selection criteria that were converted into quantitative criteria with FANP were used as outputs; and cost (which was already a quantitative criterion) was used as an input in the DEA, by way of which the performances of the suppliers were assessed. This study, which includes decision-making, performance management, and supply chain management issues, introduces a new approach, both in terms of the sector referred to and the methodology that enables companies to select the best suppliers by assessing both qualitative and quantitative factors.

  • Exploring the design of performance dashboards in relation to achieving
           organisational strategic goals

    • Abstract: Inadequate information sharing and ineffective monitoring are obstacles to strategy execution in an organisation. Performance dashboards are an information system tool used to translate the organisation's strategy into objectives, metrics, initiatives, and tasks for each group and individual in the organisation; however, many organisations have been unable to implement dashboards successfully. The primary objective of the research was to explore the design of performance dashboards in relation to achieving strategic goals. The literature revealed mandatory criteria for dashboard design. Dashboards are a business enablement tool, and their success rests on a structured development process with adequate stakeholder involvement.

  • Wind energy development in sub-Saharan Africa: Application of the SATSA
           framework

    • Abstract: There is a need for a framework that can be applied to wind energy developments in the sub-Saharan African (sSA) context that will facilitate technology-sustainable assessments to promote wind energy. This paper applies such a framework to potential wind energy developments in Namibia and Mozambique. In addition, the use of a system dynamics approach allows for wind turbine and power considerations to be adequately integrated into the application of the framework. The study applies the framework to both these countries to develop an outlook for potential wind energy developments. This results in the identification of key success factors.

  • The development of a robust risk management plan for the continuous supply
of water to hospitals in the Western Cape Province

    • Abstract: The objective of this research is to develop a robust water supply risk management and response plan for Somerset Hospital that reflects the institution's specific requirements, and to prepare general guidelines for the Western Cape Government Health Department in order to assist in developing risk management and response plans for all of its health care facilities. This will enable the Western Cape Government Health Department to be resilient in withstanding gradual systemic shocks and major crises in the supply of water to hospitals. The methodology is based on ISO 31000:2009, but it extends the approach using historical evaluations and a business impact analysis. Through the research it has become evident that one public sector in South Africa still lacks proper risk management planning, and that, on the whole, there is a global void in research into water resilience, especially that focusing on health care facilities.
