  • Driving Transformation From The Top: Distell's Journey To End-To-End
           Supply Chain Excellence

    • Abstract: Distell Group (a listed South African alcoholic beverage company) embarked on a business improvement journey that required a significant change to its supply chain structure and capability, which were inadequate to meet its 2020 strategic ambitions, to improve its performance levels. In partnership with Competitive Capabilities International (CCi), Distell developed and executed an end-to-end supply chain and excellence strategy to transform this function. This paper describes how this strategy, through four key strategic levers, effectively transformed its supply chain function as well as the resultant performance benefits that ensued, primarily in its South African operations.

  • An Analysis Of The Use Of Technology Management Activities For Technology
Optimisation: A Case In The Banking Industry

    • Abstract: Technology in the banking industry plays a key role in driving strategic business decisions. Technology acquisitions often do not result in optimal technology utilisation as measured by the number of innovations being logged, failure incidents in operations, and customer feedback ratings. The study investigates how technology management activities are carried out, with the emphasis on the acquisition and learning activities. A research model containing the elements of (i) technology acquisition effort, (ii) learning effort, (iii) innovative capacity, (iv) technology management tools limiting factors, and (v) technology optimisation was used to determine the inter-relationships between the elements. The research followed a mixed methods approach in which a quantitative study in the form of a survey, followed by qualitative interviews, was used. The research results confirmed the importance of the technology management activities and the need for coupling such activities. The study also identified shortcomings in terms of feedback loops in the technology management lifecycles.

  • Earned Value Analysis, Implementation Barriers, And Maturity Level In
           Oil & Gas Production

    • Abstract: Poor performance measurement practices in the oil and gas industry can cause project cost overruns, schedule delays, and scope increases. Earned value management, as an integrated project planning and control method measuring cost and schedule performance, enables the early detection of performance issues, and allows corrective actions to be implemented in a timely manner. Through a structured interview survey, this study aimed to identify the current maturity level of earned value management practice in Malaysian oil and gas firms to determine the barriers hindering the use of this practice, and to identify critical success factors for enhancing earned value management implementation in the oil and gas industry. The findings revealed the major barriers to earned value management implementation, and potential strategies to improve the effectiveness of earned value management practice in this industry.

  • Investigation Of The Effect Of Scan Vector Length On Residual Stresses In
Selective Laser Melting Of Maraging Steel 300

    • Abstract: Selective laser melting scanning strategies influence the quality characteristics of parts, such as form accuracy and residual stresses. Previous research on the effect of laser scanning strategy parameters (such as scan vector length) demonstrates that residual stresses decrease with scan vector length reduction. However, most of these studies overlook the associated porosity and how this can contribute to stress relief. In this work, three scan vector lengths were compared to evaluate their impact on residual stresses, achievable part density, and scanning time. Reducing the scan vector length generally lowers residual stresses magnitudes, but introduces porosity as a result of localised overheating.

  • Application Research Of A Technology Evaluation Method Based On Entropy
           Weight And Cloud Theory

    • Abstract: In order to solve the technical evaluation problem of key scientific and technological research and development projects, this article uses the technology evaluation method of entropy weight cloud theory to evaluate the project. The index is selected according to the 'DISCOW' construction principle, policy guidance method, and shortest distance method. The information contribution degree is used to verify the index system. The entropy weight-Analytic Hierarchy Process is adopted to determine the weights of the indicator layer and the criterion level indicators. The evaluation method is verified with the key technology research and development project (equipment manufacturing industry) of Dalian Jin pu New Area (state-level new areas) in 2018. The results show that the technology evaluation method of the entropy weight cloud theory is simple and practical. It can effectively convert qualitative and quantitative evaluations. The evaluation results are objective and consistent with the final evaluation results of actual projects. It demonstrates a good evaluation and forecasting ability. It can be used as the theoretical basis and method to evaluate projects in government science and technology departments, and in enterprises previous compliance projectsHierdie artikel maak gebruik van 'n entropiegewig wolkteorie tegnologie evalueringsmetode om die tegniese evalueringsprobleem van sleutel wetenskaplike en tegnologiese navorsing- en ontwikkelingsprojekte op te los.

  • An Integrated Approach Based On A Bi-Level Genetic Algorithm And A
Combined Zonelp For The Facility Layout Problem

    • Abstract: In this study, a new integrated approach is presented to solve the facility layout problem with unequal areas in an open field. This approach includes a two-stage method and a bi-level genetic algorithm. In the first stage of the proposed method, the arrangement of departments adjacent to each other is determined by an improved zone algorithm; in the second stage, the layout obtained from the first stage is improved by using a linear programming model, and the final locations of the departments are thus determined. This two-stage method is used in a bi-level genetic algorithm to achieve an appropriate layout. The orientation and aspect ratios of the departments are determined at the first level of the algorithm, and at the second level, the sequence of the departments is determined for the layout. The proposed approach is compared with the four approaches in the literature, by using 10 datasets in order to evaluate efficiency and performance. The quality of the proposed approach is confirmed by improving the best solutions obtained from previous studies in seven datasets. Furthermore, the presented approach obtains the best solutions from previous studies in the other three datasets.'n Geïntegreerde benadering om die fasiliteitsbeplanningsprobleem met ongelyke areas in 'n oop veld op te los word voorgestel.

  • Sustainable Hotel Strategy Execution: A Review And Way Forward

    • Abstract: Tourism, the third largest industry in the world, is worth US$ 1.4 trillion, and represents 10 per cent of the world's GDP. Tourism is also responsible for five per cent of the world's carbon dioxide emissions, of which hotels and other types of accommodation account for one per cent. In this context, a sustainable hotel strategy execution is essential for maintaining and improving our planet's socio-economic and ecological balance. This systematic review lays the foundation for the development of a sustainable hotel strategy decision and execution support tool. Systems thinking and system dynamics allow the modelling of the interdependent elements of a complex hotel system, followed by a scenario simulation for proper strategy-analysis and strategy-decision. The execution of the chosen strategy can then be compared with the expected results. With a view to appraising the potential development of such a sustainable hotel strategy execution model for any tourism destination, a systematic literature review was carried out on existing sustainable strategy execution models and tools, as well as the existing use of systems thinking and system dynamics in the tourism and hotel sector.

  • Business Model Canvas As An Analytical Tool For The Evaluation Of
Companies: Case Study For The Audiovisual Industry In Bogota, Colombia

    • Abstract: The paper discusses analytical applications of the business model canvas (BMC) formulated by Osterwalder & Pigneur [1]. From this model, a methodological tool was devised and used as part of an academic research project, in which the categories (blocks) of the BMC were taken as conceptual categories and further processed through a failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA). The specifics of reversing the business model canvas are examined, since the model was conceived for entrepreneurs and not strictly for the analysis of pre-existing companies. The application of the tool was done within the multidisciplinary mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative) project 'Business dynamics of the audiovisual industry in Bogota', which was carried out from October 2017 to May 2019 at Manuela Beltran University in Bogota, Colombia. The methodological tool was applied to 32 key companies and four institutions of the local audiovisual industry through semi-structured interviews with people in managerial positions. The nine blocks of the BMC were conceptually developed to analyse the empirical data, holding them as internal variables. The assessment of the variables revealed opportunities for the growth and development of the companies and the whole industry, as well as patterns for the existing business models of the companies.

  • A Standardised Model To Quantify The Financial Impact Of Poor Engineering
Information Quality In The Oil And Gas Industry

    • Abstract: Industry needs quality data, but digital formats increase the risk of lost data quality, implying huge risk. The benefits of data quality are difficult to calculate in order to justify the expense. A survey was developed and validated at an operating asset as a precedent. The elements are productivity and production loss, and increased cost and risk. A Monte Carlo method was field tested. The results were presented in graphical and Pareto form to facilitate funding and prioritisation. The results prove that the cost is significant. As a first exploration of the subject, opportunities exist for more sophisticated models, and for investigating causality.

  • The Design Of A Research Tool For Conducting Research In A Complex
           Socio-technical System

    • Abstract: This article presents research relating to the challenges of conducting research in a complex socio-technical system. The result of this research is that a conventional research approach is fundamentally reactive, and does not always produce the desired results when applied to such a complex socio-technical system. The literature suggests that approaching the research from a problem investigation and problem improvement point of view will provide better results. This article describes the design of a research tool using a design science research methodology that can be used for such investigations and improvement identification and evaluation activities.

  • Pro-Poor Value Chains For Small Scale Farming Innovation: Sustainability
           Improvements Through ICT

    • Abstract: The success of small-scale farmers in pro-poor value chains is constrained by aspects related to government policies, research and training, community issues, and the quality of existing information and communication technology (ICT) tools. This article discusses effective strategies to increase the access to and adoption of ICT by small-scale farmers. Based on a literature review and an expert opinion survey, it identifies and assesses the key factors that facilitate increased ICT access and adoption. Investment in the development of ICT for rural small-scale farmer development is needed, to customise farming ICT to be user-friendly, and to conduct research on the use of simpler but more appropriate technologies to facilitate ICT adoption and use for value chain development.

  • Productivity Improvement Through The Implementation Of Lean Manufacturing
In A Medium-Sized Furniture Industry: A Case Study

    • Abstract: Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are very important to national economies. In Brazil, the furniture sector has many SMEs that suffer from international competition, especially from Chinese companies. To reduce this difficulty, this study provides a case study of the partial implementation of lean manufacturing (LM) in a medium-sized furniture industry with the aim of increasing productivity. As a result, the company increased its productivity by 27 per cent in the drilling sector. In addition, the case study shows how to implement LM in a medium-sized furniture industry, demonstrating the need to adapt the system to companies outside the automobile sector.
