  • A sociologia, religiões e o protestantismo vivido

    •
  • Lived Protestantism: a comparative study in Latin America and southern
           Europe

Abstract The dossier introduced here deals with the subject of lived religion and presents results of researches carried out in three Latin American cities (Córdoba, Lima and Montevideo) and one city of southern Europe (Bilbao). It falls into the area of sociological studies on religious experience, daily life, the processes of autonomy and deinstitutionalization of religious experience. The reflections addressed in the articles concern the implications of lived religiosity within contemporary Protestantism, the same ones that lead us to looking at the interactions, narratives and practices of believers linked to evangelical Protestantism in dialogue with the themes and dynamics of modernity. These works make a valuable contribution to the field of sociological studies on lived religion, emphasizing the way in which believers select, adapt, reinterpret, and re-appropriate religious practices and narratives in everyday life, in a context of pluralization of the religious field.

  • Otherness, religious diversity and prejudices in daily interactions of
           evangelicals in Córdoba, Argentina

Abstract The paper explores how evangelicals from Córdoba, Argentina, perceive their social position, intergroup contact interactions, and the ways they seek to manage otherness, in a context of increasing visibility of religious and non-religious diversity. Based on autobiographical narratives by 23 respondents, we describe different social interactions with religious and non-religious “others” in work, militancy, educational, and social contexts. The perception of negative stereotypes towards evangelicals is extended, as several personal narratives of prejudices (isolation, harassment or animosity) toward them emerged. The strategies to manage these interactions depend on each social context and each person, and may involve compartmentalization, re-signified participation, or even the avoidance of religious diversity, among others.

  • Autonomies and rationalized identities in the lived evangelical
religiosity of believers: the Lima’s case

Abstract This article addresses the way in which evangelical believers of Lima, in Peru, build their practices of lived spirituality in a context of mobility, pluralization and deregulation of the Peruvian religious field. We are interested in observing the way in which believers linked to Lima urban Protestantism, a city traditionally marked by Catholic institutions and by an evangelical religiosity circumscribed to the space of the churches, develop new autonomous experiences of the faith and interact with other religious and secular spaces. In that sense, we are interested in analyzing the new cultural spaces and religious territories from which the evangelical believer lives his/her daily spirituality, builds new senses and discovers new ways of living and expressing his/her religious identity and ascription to the religious institution. This case allows us to analyze the way in which the context of pluralization of the religious field and the scenario of secularization build new profiles for the evangelical believer, who begins to embrace certain forms of autonomy.

  • Testimonies of salvation: stories of conversion and change of life among
           evangelical believers in Montevideo

Abstract In this paper we seek to show and classify the different testimonies of life offered by converted evangelical believers. In the city of Montevideo, taking the theoretical-methodological approach of lived religion, we interviewed eleven people who at some point in their lives became evangelical and who shared with us these stories of deconversion and conversion, generally crossed by points of inflection, changes of life and the “before and after” of Christianity. The investigation also sought to grasp the potential of the act of giving testimony of this change of life not only as a tool to attract possible converts but also as a means to strengthen the new religious identities (at both personal and group levels) in their daily lives. Findings suggest, on the one hand, two main reasons pointed in the narratives of the subjects, for the conversion or reconnection, as well as other elements highlighted for being part of the process of strengthening the link with their Church and their new religious identities. On the other hand, the act of witnessing is found to serve effectively as a positive resource of validation for believers.

  • Evangelicals in Bilbao: being a minority believer

Abstract The Basque Country, which has a strong Catholic tradition, has experienced in recent years a process of “disbelief" that places it as one of the territories most distanced from religion in Spain. Added to this is the fact that such distance regarding religion is also combative, that is, not only almost 50% of the population declares themselves as “non-believers” but their attitude towards the Catholic church is clearly of rejection. In this context, the rest of the religions, whose percentages, being still very low, are increasing, are placed in a position of minority not only numerical but also social. In this paper we seek to understand to what extent, in a context of pronounced secularization, this minority position affects both the beliefs and the way of living of Protestant people in general and, specifically, evangelicals. Conducted by means of in-depth interviews with Evangelicals, both Latin American and indigenous, in Bilbao, the first results point to interpretive autonomy, an ambiguous assessment of diversity and the privatization of religious experience as the most relevant characteristics.

  • Religion and economic and political preferences among university students
from the periphery: an exploratory study in the Baixada Fluminense

Abstract This article aims to analyze the importance of religion on political, social and economic preferences among undergraduate students in the periphery of Rio de Janeiro. The data are the result of a survey on the opinions of undergraduate students from a campus of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ), located in Nova Iguaçu, in the heart of Baixada Fluminense (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). A multivariate analysis (principal component analysis, kmeans clusters and regression) of the survey data highlights the significant influence of evangelical churches on various moral issues. The research also identifies a broad and diffuse demand for social policies and better provision of public goods such as health and education.

Abstract At the end of the first year at the Academia Militar das Agulhas Negras (AMAN), the cadet chooses, in order of classification and from the positions offered, at what branch he will remain throughout his career. It was observed that, from 1998 to 2012, the positions that are first filled are those of the Ordnance Corps and the Quartermaster Corps. The present article seeks to understand this tendency within the military professionalization, suggesting that in its genesis lies a change in the officers’ understanding of the Brazilian Army, from an institution to an organization. Underlining the analysis there’s the expectation of performance of the military function in Brazil, the military orphanhood and military professionalization. The data indicating the preference of the senior cadets for the Ordnance Corps and Quartermaster Corps are analyzed through the theoretical institutional/occupational perspective, as proposed by Moskos. The hypothesis that guides this article is that, during the studied period, the senior cadets tend to consider the career in the Army like any other job.

  • Validation of a scale of cultural mediations in the context of community
           sociocultural projects

Abstract The presence of community sociocultural projects that have art as their driving force has diversified dissimilar urban and rural contexts. This research is aimed at the creation and validation of a scale that could allow us to analyze and understand the forms of action and manifestation of cultural mediations in communities. The instrument, composed of five dimensions - aesthetic, artistic, participatory, axiological and territorial anchorage -, responds to a concept of cultural mediations manifested in the construction, reproduction and symbolic exchange produced between cultural factors, artistic devices, territory and the participating public of a community sociocultural project. A mixed approach was used in the research, where the results of several focus groups, expert rounds and statistical tests that demonstrate the validity and reliability of the instrument were triangulated. The items proposed for each dimension resulted from the analysis of literature, different focus groups with specialists in the subject and the validation by experts through the Delphi method. The internal consistency index showed a coefficient of .845, while in the exploratory factor analysis, the dimensions created were confirmed through the communalities that emerged. The exploratory factor analysis showed the correlation between all these dimensions. In the subscales the Cronbach's Alpha were satisfactory, as well as the correlation between items.

  • Bringing governments back in: the chief executive and the outcomes of LGBT
           institutional activism (2003-2014)

Abstract The recent literature on the relations between social movements and State in Brazil has analyzed the influence of institutional activists that work within the bureaucracy of the Executive branch formulating public policies. It explains the limits and possibilities of their action through the analysis of the particular institutions in which they act. This work presents a comparative analysis of the trajectory and outcomes of the LGBT institutional activism in four government departments of the Executive branch in the federal level between 2003 and 2014. The results show, first, that in spite of presenting different trajectories and configurations regarding the LGBT activism, those offices present a similar decrease in the outcomes of LGBT institutional activism since the first Rousseff administration. Second, the results show that since this administration, the chief Executive started to intervene in those different departments, creating similar obstacles for the LGBT activism operating within them. Considering these data, I argue that the outcomes of the institutional activism are also conditioned by the interventions of the chief Executive its departments. Therefore, it is necessary to “bring the governments back” to the analysis of the relationships between social movements and State in Brazil.

  • Rethinking abstractions: a call for uncertainty

Abstract In this work, Isabelle Stengers once more resorts to the contributions of Alfred North Whitehead’s processual philosophy to discuss knowledge production in modernity, a prominent subject in the vast and seldom translated into Portuguese work of the Belgian philosopher. In dialogue with contemporary scholars, such as Anna Tsing, Bruno Latour and Donna Haraway,Civiliser la modernité' invites us to ponder what can the humanities know in the face of the uncertainties of our time. This review seeks to explore above all the potential contributions of this work for the social sciences, articulating the philosophical discussion and methodological developments.

  • Silences in media coverage of the World Cup in Pernambuco, Brazil

    • Abstract: Abstract The 2014 World Cup occurred in Brazil at a time of great political turbulence and change in communications markets. From the standpoint of a person involved in media coverage of this championship, the MA thesis titled Os silêncios, os silenciamentos e a cobertura midiática da Copa do Mundo em Pernambuco (Silences, silencing and media coverage of the World Cup in Pernambuco), by Eduardo Baptista Amorim, analyzed the forms of silencing employed by the traditional mess media today.

  • Networks, sociabilities and health: the role of mental health support in
           Brazil

    • Abstract: Abstract The occidental model of mental health support, dominant in Brazil, cannot be understood without considering nonprofessional curative practices and social representations of health and sickness. Here I summarize my research of the past several years on mental health and sociabilities, based on observation in institutions for mental health support in Brazilian cities.
