  • Branding the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria
    • Authors: Suvojit Bandopadhyaya
Abstract: Global Media and Communication, Ahead of Print.
This article will explore three crucial parameters that have been taken into consideration to attract millennials towards the Islamic State or Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) brand: the first parameter is story creation around the historical significance of Islamic prophecies justifying the ISIS brand. Second is the symbolisms attached to the ISIS brand and its relevance (a flag, a leader, a logo, a caliphate) and, third, the actions or the sense of attachment to the ISIS brand in the form of practising ideology, gaining recognition and appeal to the millennials. The promotion of the brand has been advanced through diverse means – social media platforms, mainstream media organizations, YouTube videos, all orchestrated to gain recognition of a rising state brand on the one end and a brand of fear and intimidation on the other.

  • Do social media create revolutions' Using Twitter sentiment analysis
for predicting the Maidan Revolution in Ukraine
    • Authors: Iana Sabatovych
Abstract: Global Media and Communication, Ahead of Print.
A wide variety of social media platforms have become integral to contemporary forms of social engagement, including mass protests. Twitter is considered specifically indicative of public attitudes in this regard. This study attempts to examine the feasibility of using Twitter sentiment analysis to predict the 2014 revolution in Ukraine. Tweets representing public opinion are clustered by means of the ‘StreamKM++’ algorithm into three classes (likely, neutral and unlikely). The resulting prediction model for the three classes (using Naïve Bayes) was 96.75 per cent. As such, this study offers a promising way to perform an online prediction of social movements.

  • Rethinking China’s global ‘propaganda’ blitz
    • Authors: Falk Hartig
Abstract: Global Media and Communication, Ahead of Print.
China’s global communication activities are mainly perceived as sinister propaganda to mislead international audiences, and related discussions exemplify Western unease about China’s global communication efforts. While not trivializing these efforts, this article objects to some of the assessments and argues in favour of a critical but open-minded engagement with China’s global communication activities. Such an approach should pay attention to potential audiences and should closely scrutinize the real-life circumstances of China’s communicative practices and put them into perspective for its audiences. The article highlights these aspects by analysing the screening of a video in New York City’s Times Square in Summer 2016 and one version of the China Daily supplement, China Watch.

  • Agenda-setting in the realm of popular culture: The case of the Korean
           Wave in East Asia
    • Authors: Hyeri Jung
Abstract: Global Media and Communication, Ahead of Print.
The spread of South Korean popular culture across the globe, known as the Korean Wave, has signalled a significant challenge towards the traditional one-way flow of media culture. This study applies agenda-setting effect, which has been largely applied to political communication, to the domain of mass-produced popular culture. It explores how Korean media’s news coverage of the popularity of Korean TV drama in China influences not only the first and second agenda-setting effect but also Koreans’ perception of Chinese audiences. The findings suggest that the Korean Wave could serve as a form of reversed cultural diplomacy by promoting soft power in East Asia.

  • Conceptualizing a distributed, multi-scalar global public sphere through
activist communication practices in the World Social Forum
    • Authors: Hilde C Stephansen
Abstract: Global Media and Communication, Ahead of Print.
This article contributes to debate about how to conceptualize the global public sphere. Drawing on media practice theory and ethnographic research on media activism in the World Social Forum, it shows how ‘global publics’ can be constituted through a diverse range of activist communication practices that complicate both conventional hierarchies of scale and contemporary theorizations of publics as personalized networks. It develops an understanding of the global public sphere as an emergent formation made up of multiple, interlinked publics at different scales and emphasizes the significance of collective communication spaces for actors at the margins of the global network society.

  • The case for communication rights: A rights-based approach to media
           development
    • Authors: Charu Uppal, Paola Sartoretto, David Cheruiyot
Abstract: Global Media and Communication, Ahead of Print.
From the 1980s, international organizations have devised strategies to develop national media systems to make them more diverse and inclusive so as to both exhibit and preserve local cultures. However, these strategies have not always been successful since information has become a commodity, because the interests of private actors prevent equal access to communication rights. This article outlines a perspective on media development from a rights-based approach, derived from a critique of dominant perspectives from international organizations with a strong focus on technology provisions. The article argues for media development based on the right to communication as an alternative to commodification of information. Through examples from Brazil and Kenya, the article illustrates that viewing communication as a basic right can lead to the inclusion of more voices in the public discourse. In addition, a model for media development is proposed, suggesting that the state and national civil society play a significant role in promoting diverse national public spheres.

Are countries with a free press less corrupt than countries where the press is partly or completely unfree' Our empirical investigation finds evidence of a significant relationship between higher levels of press freedom and lower levels of corruption with other variables being equal. Furthermore, we provide evidence that while democracy deters corruption only in countries that enjoy press freedom, rule of law reduces corruption whether the press is free or unfree. Press freedom and democracy are complements rather than substitutes in the fight against corruption.

           Jazeera’s Palestine Papers leak
    • Authors: Stephen Marmura

Abstract: Global Media and Communication, Ahead of Print.
This article considers the ‘Palestine Papers’ as both a major news story carried by Al Jazeera in 2011 and an enduring digital artefact. These leaked documents revealed that during peace talks, the Palestinian Authority offered concessions to Israel that went beyond the Palestinian national consensus, yet failed to advance the cause of statehood. While many predicted a third Palestinian uprising, the impact of this scandal appeared limited. However, by drawing upon Harold Innis’ insights concerning the time-binding versus space-binding ‘biases’ of media and institutions, a more complex picture is revealed, one unamenable to conventional understandings of media effects.
