  • Implementation of Artificial Intelligence in Fashion: Are Consumers
           Ready'
    • Authors: Yuli Liang, Seung-Hee Lee, Jane E. Workman
Abstract: Clothing and Textiles Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
Given the growing interest in combinations of fashion and digital innovations, it is critical for both researchers and retailers to understand how consumers respond to new technologies, especially artificial intelligence (AI). The purpose of the study was to examine consumers’ attitudes and purchase intention toward an AI device. By adapting the technology acceptance model, a conceptual model was constructed and tested related to consumers’ attitudes and purchase intention toward an AI device—Echo Look. A total of 313 subjects (61% female) between 18 and 65 years old in the top 10 metropolitan areas in the United States participated in the study. The results indicated that perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and performance risk were significant in consumers’ attitude toward AI. Positive attitudes toward technology positively influenced the purchase intention. Based on these results, theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

  • Why Do They Sew' Women’s Motivations to Sew Clothing for
           Themselves
    • Authors: Addie Martindale, Ellen McKinney
Abstract: Clothing and Textiles Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
Garment sewing is undergoing a resurgence in participation, with a growing number of women choosing to sew their clothing instead of buying readily available fast fashion. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the current motivations of an ethnically diverse sample of women who sew garments for themselves. The in-depth interview data from 15 interviews revealed personal fulfillment to be the overarching reason for participation. Personal fulfillment was achieved through main emergent themes of investment, control, and empowerment with 10 subthemes. Theoretical perspectives of prosumerism, craft and do-it-yourself consumption, and uses and gratification theory were applied to the emergent themes to interpret the motivations of these women to sew garments for themselves. A model of sewing motivations for female garment sewing was developed to illustrate the connection between the emergent themes’ contribution to the women’s personal fulfillment and recurring cycle that takes place each time the women create a new garment for themselves.

  • Water-Related Comfort Properties of Silver-Modified Polyamide Fabrics
Treated With Wicking and Antibacterial Finishes
    • Authors: Sena Cimilli Duru
Abstract: Clothing and Textiles Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
The performance of the active sportswear is mostly related to wetting, wicking, and permeability properties of the fabrics. Antibacterial efficacy of the garments has an important place on the wearer performance. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of wicking and antibacterial finishing treatments on water-related comfort properties of seamless garments made from silver-modified polyamide and conventional polyamide fibers. The results showed that silver-modified polyamide fiber performed better at longitudinal wicking height and transfer wicking ratios. Application of antibacterial and wicking finishing treatments reduced the drying rate and water vapor permeability whereas transfer wicking and wicking height values increased. By Lycra incorporation, height of water wicked was much higher while transfer wicking, drying rate, and water vapor permeability were affected negatively. Finally, SWT fabric was found the best, while PWN performed the worst according to the hybrid AHP-TOPSIS method.

  • An Investigation Into the Effect of Different Parameters on the Dyeing of
High-Performance M-Aramid Fiber and Its Optimization
    • Authors: Farooq Azam, Kashif Iqbal, Faiza Safdar, Tanveer Hussain, Munir Ashraf, Abdur Rehman
Abstract: Clothing and Textiles Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
M-aramid fibers have very good flame-retardant properties and are mostly used in protective textiles such as racing or firefighter suits. The dyeing and fastness properties of m-aramid fibers are investigated in this article in a batch process to optimize dyeing parameters such as dye concentration, salt, swelling agent, and temperature. The exhaustion at an acidic pH, preferably in the range of 4–5, indicated good results. The color yield of m-aramid fibers was found to be dependent on the concentration of swelling agent, salt, and dye, as well as the dyeing temperature. The effect of swelling agent on the K/S of m-aramid fibers with cationic dyes, along with their fastness properties, is investigated and reported in detail.

  • Analysis and Study of Effect of Natural Dye From Bombax malabarica on Silk
           Fabric
    • Authors: V. Narayana Swamy
Abstract: Clothing and Textiles Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
The current study deals with the extraction of natural dye from Bombax malabarica flowers, readily available by-product. Dye was extracted under different operating conditions such as time (60–90 min), temperature (90–95 °C), and pH 9. The dyed samples were subjected to CIELAB system using Gretag Macbeth Color Eye 7000A Spectrophotometer for the evaluation of color strength and L*a*b* C and H values. To improve the dye uptake and color fastness, pre and postmordanting was carried out using alum, tannic, and tartaric acid mordants. Dyed silk fabrics were tested for its color fastness when subjected to light, washing, and rubbing. Fastness properties of dyed silk fabric samples were found considerably good. Mordanted silk fabric samples showed increase in dye uptake resulting in high color strength and better fastness properties. The dyed silk samples displayed good antimicrobial activity (reduction rate: 48%) against the bacteria Escherichia coli and (reduction rate: 55%) against Staphylococcus aureus.

Contact burns pose a serious threat on firefighters’ health, safety, and job performance. The objective of the study was to analyze the effects of compression and moisture content on thermal protective performance of clothing. Skin-simulant sensor and Pennes bio-heat transfer model were used to predict time to cause skin contact burn. A new index (heat transfer efficiency) was proposed to examine the effects of applied pressure and moisture level on the contact heat transfer in the thermal protective clothing. It was demonstrated that the addition of moisture nonlinearly decreased the thermal protective level of clothing. The fabric thickness was greatly decreased by the compression, but the thermal protective level presented no significant difference between two kinds of pressures. The heat transfer efficiency was an effective index for evaluating the contact heat transfer, which was determined by the basic properties of fabric, the moisture content, and the pressure level. The conclusions from this study could contribute to understanding the effects of compression and moisture on the contact heat transfer, thus providing the principle of thermal protection against skin contact burns.

We examine the role of external knowledge inflow in improving the product and process innovation of Korean exporting small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the textiles, apparel, and footwear industries. Building on the resource-based view (RBV), we investigate how five sources of knowledge inflow (suppliers, customers, competitors, universities, and government agencies) contribute to product and process innovation through absorptive capacity (AC) as a mechanism to explain the link between external knowledge inflow and innovation. Conducting a path analysis, we found that knowledge inflow from customers and government agencies had a positive effect on AC, subsequently enhancing product and process innovation. Additionally, knowledge inflow from universities and government agencies also affected process innovation and product innovation, respectively. We also demonstrated the mediating role of AC in the relationship between external knowledge inflow and innovation. Korean SMEs should thus invest in developing the knowledge sources of customers, universities, and government agencies to enhance AC and innovation.

  • Can Virtually Trying on Apparel Help in Selecting the Correct Size'
    • Authors: Niina Hernández, Heikki Mattila, Lena Berglin

Abstract: Clothing and Textiles Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
Close to 30% of garments bought online are returned, often due to issues of fit. These issues often relate to size selection, which is challenging without physically trying on a garment. Alternative methods need to be explored to select the best size in lieu of physically trying apparel on. To address this issue, we compare the size selections based on primary measurements and size charts, virtual garments, and real garments. A cross-sectional quantitative survey was carried out in an experimental setting. The participants (36, predominantly White females, aged 21–56) made size selections and evaluations based on virtual and real blouses and trousers. Selecting the size based on virtual garments is more accurate than size selection based on primary measurements and size charts, scoring 57% and 42%, respectively. Further research should be used to improve the virtual fitting room, with benefits such as fewer returns and more satisfied customers.

  • Bra Underwire Customization With 3-D Printing
    • Authors: Zhiwei Wang, Minyoung Suh
      First page: 281
Abstract: Clothing and Textiles Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
In the current research, we aimed to investigate whether customized 3-D underwires improve bra performance. The first experiment was designed to study whether customized 3-D printed underwires provide significant benefits over conventional wires. Customized 3-D underwires were produced following individual breast root shapes and compared with conventional underwires through wear trials. According to the empirical data, pressure was significantly reduced with the customized underwire, and performance improvement was more evident with wearing sensations of support and comfort. In the second experiment, we varied the length of the customized underwires and observed how the length of underwires influenced bra performance. More pressure was found in the outer region of the longest underwires than the medium-length wires but support and comfort sensations did not have noticeable changes depending on the wire length. As illustrated in this research, advanced 3-D technologies could contribute to product engineering and customization in the apparel industry.

  • Simulation of Temperature Distribution Within Weft-Knitted Fabrics in
           Extended State
    • Authors: Mozhgan Ziaei, Mohammad Ghane, Hossein Hasani, Ahmad Saboonchi

Abstract: Clothing and Textiles Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
The aim of this study was simulating the temperature distribution in course-wise extended weft-knitted fabrics by considering different extension levels. Accordingly, three types of weft-knitted fabrics structured in plain single jersey, plain rib, and interlock patterns were prepared using an electronic flat knitting machine. The fabrics were then exposed in a course-wise manner to three different extension levels (0%, 15%, and 30%) from which their heat transfer features at an extended state could be measured, by using the hot plate instrument and an infrared thermal camera. For the theoretical evaluation of temperature distribution, the fabrics’ corresponding geometrical unit cells were established in a finite element software environment. There was an acceptable agreement between the experimental and modeling results. It was also shown that applying different extension levels could significantly affect the knitted fabrics’ temperature distribution.
