  • Adult Noncredit Students’ Priorities and Satisfaction
    • Authors: Sarantsetseg Davaasambuu, Jessica Cinelli, Christine Zagari
Abstract: Adult Learning, Ahead of Print.
Background. Adult Student Priorities Survey (ASPS) from Ruffalo Noel Levitz was utilized to examine the level of importance and the level of satisfaction of continuing education students in allied health care and English as a second language (ESL) programs at Kingborough Community College, Brooklyn, NY. Method. Mean scores for both “importance” and “satisfaction” items were calculated by summing participants’ ratings (1-7 Likert-type scale) and dividing them by the number respondents. Mean scores for each scale were also calculated by summing all respondents’ scale scores and dividing them by the number of respondents. Gaps between importance and satisfaction were calculated by subtracting the score for satisfaction from the score for importance. The mean scores of allied health care students were compared with mean scores of ESL students. Results. The highest gap score was observed for academic services (0.91) followed by service excellence (0.85) as reported by the allied health care group, showing that students reported high importance but low satisfaction. There were no statistically significant differences between the average score of the two groups, indicating that the ratings were similar for the groups. Conclusion. Based on our findings, simple fixes such as extending registration times, having additional college and career advisors on staff, and training existing staff on customer service skills have the potential to increase enrollment and revenue, thereby giving us the resources to offer additional classes and programs in response to student needs.

  • The Wages of Worship, Religious Education, and Human Capital Development
in the Black Church: Voices From Rural African American Primary Caregiving
    • Authors: Mattyna L. Stephens
Abstract: Adult Learning, Ahead of Print.
Grandmothers are often referred to as the spiritual learners and leaders within families and often pass their religious teachings on to their children and grandchildren. This qualitative study investigated learning and human capital development among rural African American grandmothers (n = 10) caring for their grandchildren. The findings revealed the participants’ perception of the Black Church, an agency for learning. The findings further revealed the benefits of religious education in learning communities and how the skills the participants acquired through such engagements contributed to their human capital development, thereby indicating the wages of worship. Finally, findings indicated how the participants utilized religious teachings to support the development of the children in their care.

  • Critical Reflection for Civic-Mindedness: The Executive Blog as
           “Regeneration Alcove”
    • Authors: Shahron Williams van Rooij
Abstract: Adult Learning, Ahead of Print.
This study explored the use of critical reflection blogs to integrate civic-mindedness into an executive education program at a large public university in the south Atlantic region of the United States. Although there is a robust literature on the use of blogs for critical reflection in degree programs, far less attention has been given to blogging in nondegree executive education programs. Participants (n = 10) were senior executives participating in a nondegree preparatory program for an emerging C-suite role. Blog postings submitted over an 8-month period were analyzed using theory-driven content analysis to explore the extent to which reflective blogging contributed to the regeneration of civic-mindedness among well-educated, seasoned professionals. Study findings identified a variety of themes related to examining one’s own assumptions about civic-mindedness and how those themes could be translated into initiatives for organizational transformation. Study limitations and implications for other adult learning programs are also discussed.

  • Workforce Development Through Online Experiential Learning for STEM
    • Authors: Arefeh Mohammadi, Kevin Grosskopf, John Killingsworth
      First page: 27
Abstract: Adult Learning, Ahead of Print.
The U.S. workforce is increasingly comprised of older adults, women, and minorities who lack basic skills and are unable to acquire these skills through traditional educational and training programs. New approaches are needed to provide effective training to the adult learner and flexible support for nontraditional students who must balance work-life demands with limited educational opportunities. Contextualized teaching and learning (CTL) is a form of experiential learning that blends both basic skills and occupational training together in environments that allow students to relate subject matter to real-world situations. Virtual CTL environments can be created to better engage students, provide immediate performance feedback, reduce training time, and improve accessibility. To determine the effectiveness of CTL, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers Tooling U curriculum and learning management system (LMS) was studied. This intervention consisted of online modules with basic skills remediation blended with interactive labs and virtual reality exercises. A nonrandom population of 342 participants was chosen for study, including 75 exposed to the CTL intervention (experimental group) and 267 not exposed to the CTL intervention (control group). Learning outcomes such as test scores, completed credit hours, course completions, and earned credentials, were compared between CTL and non-CTL groups and between demographic subsets within the CTL group. Underrepresented groups, including older adults, women, and minorities, were 2 to 3 times greater in the CTL group compared with the non-CTL group. Overall, students exposed to CTL achieved higher rates of credentialing (55%) when compared with students not exposed to contextualized instruction (20%).

Doctoral education demands significant time, energy, financial, and emotional commitments. Depending on the characteristics of the doctoral student, barriers to completion and challenges with the doctoral process can require unique types of support. The purpose of this article is to examine perspectives expressed in the literature of varied disciplines regarding program and instructional support strategies that lead to doctoral student progress to degree completion. The article concludes with program and instructional support implications for adult educators.

  • Motivating Adult Learners to Learn at Adult-Education Schools in Saudi
    • Authors: Obaidalah H. Aljohani, Sarah M. Alajlan
Abstract: Adult Learning, Ahead of Print.
This study’s main purpose was to identify adult learners’ motivation to pursue learning at Saudi Arabia’s Yanbu adult-education schools. The study also investigates if there is a difference by gender, by age, and among learners in terms of their internal and external motivation to learn. The study’s theoretical framework came from Knowles’ theory of andragogy. A survey consisting of a self-administered questionnaire was used. The study population included all adult learners (n = 463) at the Yanbu adult-education schools in Saudi Arabia. The results revealed the importance of the five motivators (social contact, family togetherness, social stimulation, cognitive interest, and religious stimulation) for adult learners at Saudi Arabia’s Yanbu adult-education schools. However, this study indicated that adult learners are more motivated internally than externally. Therefore, teachers should pay attention to the internal factors more than the external factor to keep up with their students’ level of motivation.

  • Reinvisioning Coparent Curriculum: Meeting the Needs of a Changing
    • Authors: Ellie McCann, Sharon Powell, Emily H. Becher, Jenifer K. McGuire
Abstract: Adult Learning, Ahead of Print.
The goal of this article is to provide a framework for practitioners to update their curriculum using an in-depth case study of the Parents Forever program. As new research and best practices change, curriculum authors and program administrators should consider revising both the content and method of delivery of their courses. However, little literature exists to document the pragmatics of this process, particularly when operating within the context of a legislative mandate. The case study of the Parents Forever program curriculum update is grounded in a program life cycle model. Using this model, in-depth descriptions are provided, from beginning observations of current classes to final stages of the evaluation. This included piloting, formative evaluation, implementation, and summative evaluation, including results of a year of teaching the new curriculum, which are described along with next steps.

  • The Online First-Year Experience: Defining and Illustrating a New Reality
    • Authors: Ryan Korstange, Jeff Hall, Jamie Holcomb, Jasmeial Jackson
Abstract: Adult Learning, Ahead of Print.
All incoming students have a first experience with their institution. This article reviews literature on adult education, online learning, and first-year student success to articulate the scope of experiences and programs that ought to be included in institutional efforts aimed at helping adult students be successful in their first year of online education. In addition, three approaches to support these online students in their first year of college are illustrated. Key areas surveyed are online orientation programs, online first-year experience courses, and the co-curricular engagement of online learners. Examination of these cases demonstrates that supporting online first-year students is quite important, particularly given the proliferation of online students and their lag in standard measures of success.

  • Blended Learning: Balancing the Best of Both Worlds for Adult Learners
    • Authors: Kelly McKenna, Kalpana Gupta, Leann Kaiser, Tobin Lopes, Jill Zarestky
Abstract: Adult Learning, Ahead of Print.
Blended, or hybrid, courses have often been touted as the ideal way to facilitate learning as they allow learners to interact in both face-to-face and online settings, thereby experiencing the “best of both worlds.” In practice, that ideal learning setting is more difficult to achieve. While blended courses have the potential to integrate the most beneficial aspects of each modality, such course design requires diligence to successfully navigate a balance and ensure the optimal delivery mode is considered for each learning scenario. In this article, the authors share the most current research on blended learning for adults, including benefits and drawbacks, various blended models, the results of an empirical study comparing two blended designs, and conclude with a practitioner tool to guide decision-making and achieve the appropriate balance of online and face-to-face and ultimately realize the best of both worlds for adult learners.
