  • Affective computing in the modern workplace
    • Authors: Sharon Richardson
      Pages: 78 - 85
Abstract: Business Information Review, Volume 37, Issue 2, Page 78-85, June 2020.
Affective computing refers to a class of computer-based solutions that analyse data about human behaviour, such as facial expressions, gestures, and language, for its emotional information. The term was first coined 25 years ago when the ability for computers to perform basic sensorimotor tasks such as object detection in images was in its infancy. This article revisits the subject and considers how it is being applied in real-world applications today. We look at research from cognitive science informing our understanding of emotions and how computing capabilities have advanced in recent years to produce cognitive algorithms capable of detecting human attention, emotion and health. Affective computing offers the potential to revolutionise how we incorporate emotion as information in communications and decision systems. However, much of the underlying research that forms the foundations for emotion detection is being challenged, raising concerns about the ethics, trustworthiness and viability of such platforms. This article presents a critique of the technologies and appraises their suitability for real-world applications as part of a modern workplace.

  • Artificial intelligence tools and perspectives of university librarians:
           An overview
    • Authors: Muhammad Yousuf Ali, Salaman Bin Naeem, Rubina Bhatti
Abstract: Business Information Review, Ahead of Print.
The main purpose of this paper is to assess and examine the possible application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in Pakistani academic libraries, particularly those areas of library technical and library user services where AI could be applied in the near future. A secondary purpose is to bring the library perspective on AI to the forefront of the scholarly world. This is a self-exploratory study, in which a qualitative approach interview has been conducted with 10 chief librarians/library heads (5 public + 5 private sectors) from universities regarding their views on the adoption of artificial intelligence tools in Pakistani academic libraries. Results are tabulated in a descriptive format. Librarians are aware of AI technologies. Services based on Natural Language Processing (NLP) are used in libraries, e.g. Google Assistant, Voice Searching, and Google Translate. Pattern recognition methods, such as text data mining, are also used to retrieve library material and conduct online searching. Big data is accessed via services such as cloud computing, OneDrive, and Google Drive. There is a very low level of awareness of robotics and chatbots. This study provides librarians with suggestions as to how AI tools could be used in libraries which either have yet to adopt AI technologies or wish to implement more advanced tools. Pakistani library schools could collaborate with computer science departments to establish AI Labs in the respective library and information science (LIS) departments/libraries. AI challenges funding and technological skills are the key problem to implement with AI in the University Libraries.

  • Information flows – Or does it' The complexity of enterprise
           information management
    • Authors: Martin S White
Abstract: Business Information Review, Ahead of Print.
Although there has been a degree of acceptance that information is a core business asset almost no research has been carried out into the factors that affect the way that information flows around the enterprise as employees at all levels seek to make use of it to complete tasks and make decisions. These decisions can have a significant impact on business performance and on the career development of employees. The challenge lies in finding ways to track the flow of information, especially where workarounds have been developed by employees to overcome their frustration with ‘approved’ processes. Over the last few years computational ethnography, initially applied to assessing issues relating to culture and communication. is becoming increasing widely used to track the flow of documents. In the wake of Covid19 organisations are going to have to operate in a rapidly changing business environment. Unless the flow of information is better understood short-term changes may be implemented which turn out to be of limited benefit or even undermine the rate of achievement of new business objectives.

  • Using coaching tools to develop professional practice holistically
    • Authors: Sarah Wolfenden
Abstract: Business Information Review, Ahead of Print.
Do you teach or train others' Are you passionate about delivering a great learning experience to them' Are you considering working towards professional accreditation and have been putting it off' Are you tired of faffing around and want to get your focus back' Are you ambitious but concerned about burning out' Do you need some space and time – where no-one is vying for your attention – to gain clarity, develop your practice and explore how you can be of service to your participants, your colleagues and your loved ones while not losing yourself in the process' If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then you may find this article helpful. Its aim is to provide an overview of a few select tools to help teaching and training professionals articulate their purpose, craft a teaching identity and philosophy, and get the most out of training received – with a few self-care tips thrown in for good measure! As we move to a world where increasingly roles are being replaced by automation, we need to focus on what makes us individual, personalised humans (Gleeson, 2018). I hope that this article will provide a starting point.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies are rapidly maturing and proliferating through all public and private sectors. The potential for these technologies to do good and to help us in our everyday lives is immense. But there is a risk that unless managed and controlled AI can also cause us harm. Questions about regulation, what form it takes and who is responsible for governance are only just beginning to be answered. In May 2019, 42 countries came together to support a global governance framework for AI. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Principles on Artificial Intelligence (OECD (2019) OECD principles on AI. Available at: https://www.oecd.org/going-digital/ai/principles/ (accessed 2 March 2020)) saw like-minded democracies of the world commit to common AI values of trust and respect. In Europe, the European Commission’s (EC) new president, Ursula von der Leyen has made calls for a General Data Protection Regulation style. As a first step the EC has published a white paper: ‘On Artificial Intelligence – A European Approach to Excellence and Trust’ (European Commission (2020) Report, Europa, February). In February 2020, the UK government has published a report on ‘Artificial Intelligence in the Public Sector’ (The Committee on Standards in Public Life (2020) Artificial intelligence and public standards. Report, UK Government, February). This article discusses some of the potential threats AI may hold if left unregulated. It provides a brief overview of the regulatory activities for AI worldwide, and in more detail the current UK AI regulatory landscape. Finally, the article looks at the role that the information professional might play in AI and ML.

  • Knowledge management and information management: A tale of two siblings
    • Authors: Judy Payne, Jonathan Fryer
      First page: 69
Abstract: Business Information Review, Ahead of Print.
Confusion has long existed between knowledge management (KM) and information management (IM). To the uninitiated, the difference between KM and IM is unclear – largely because there are no universally accepted definitions of ‘knowledge’ and ‘information’. But the confusion is not limited to the uninitiated. KM and IM specialists argue over the meaning of explicit and tacit knowledge, over the difference between information and data, and over the difference between codified knowledge and information. Why' And does any of this matter' This article explores the confusion between KM and IM by reflecting on the origins, development and current state of the two disciplines. The words we use to think and talk about KM and IM directly influence the way we practise KM and IM: and in some contexts, confusion between KM and IM has serious adverse effects on understanding and practice. The solution might lie in closer future development of the two disciplines – as long as practitioners appreciate that KM and IM are distinct but complementary, we talk to each other, and we pay attention to the words we use.
