  • Prediction of the sound reduction index of clay hollow brick walls
    • Authors: Nicola Granzotto, Antonino Di Bella, Edoardo Alessio Piana
Abstract: Building Acoustics, Ahead of Print.
Clay hollow brick walls are still popular in building industry, but the prediction of their sound insulation properties is not straightforward due to their inhomogeneous and anisotropic characteristics. In this article, a classic approach has been used to determine the sound transmission coefficient of brick walls, assuming an orthotropic behaviour and deriving the mechanical and dynamic characteristics from datasheet information. Different types of walls with horizontal and vertical mortar joints have been analysed. Experimental measurements of the sound reduction index carried out according to ISO 10140-2 standard have been performed, and the resulting values are compared with the predictions in the proposed model. It was found that the sound reduction index can be fairly predicted in the low-frequency range and it is correctly predicted in the mass law region, whereas in the high-frequency range the inner block structure is responsible for a loss of performance which is difficult to predict with the analytical methods.

  • Assessing the ease of conversation in multi-group conversation spaces:
Effect of background music volume on acoustic comfort in a café
    • Authors: Naoya Maruyama, Yasuhiro Hiraguri, Keiji Kawai, Mari Ueda
Abstract: Building Acoustics, Ahead of Print.
A “multi-group conversation space” refers to a space, such as restaurant or café, where more than one group of people share a space and make conversation within their respective group. From a field experiment in an actual café, we investigated the acoustic comfort in a multi-group conversation space considering speech intelligibility and speech privacy as major factors. In the experiment, noise measurements and a questionnaire survey taken by customers were conducted for 4 days. We were able to change the volume of the background music during operating hours, setting the level on each of the 4 days to low, mid, high, and none. Indoor noise levels were measured at six representative points with six sound level meters hung from the ceiling. The questionnaire consisted of eight items for subjective evaluation, including ease of conversation, comfort, and room atmosphere. After having their meal or drinks, the customers were asked to fill in the questionnaire at their table. The occupancy of neighboring tables and the number of customers in the café were also recorded. Results show that (1) overall, the respondents evaluated the café space positively; (2) high background music volume levels together with occupied neighboring tables tended to elicit negative evaluations; and (3) customer clustering analysis identified certain influences of distance from loudspeakers, neighboring table occupancy, and personal characteristics.

  • Effect of mode of delivery and background noise on speech characteristics
of talkers in a classroom environment
    • Authors: Nithya Subramaniam, K Ramamurthy
Abstract: Building Acoustics, Ahead of Print.
Global and acoustic–phonetic correlates of speech intelligibility are important measures of talker intelligibility. Speech characteristics have been evaluated using speech samples that involve reading pre-administered passages under controlled environments. In classrooms, lecturing is the mode of speech delivery. The presence of noise from ceiling fans and other external noise hinder the speech communication process. This study evaluated the talkers’ speech characteristics utilizing recordings from graduate students under reading and lecturing modes and in the presence and absence of noise generated by ceiling fans. The acoustical conditions under which talkers delivered their speech were characterized using octave band U50 values. Global and acoustic–phonetic correlates of talker intelligibility were measured and the variation in correlates of speech intelligibility was statistically analyzed. The results revealed that talkers significantly modified their speech characteristics relevant to intelligibility across modes of speech delivery and in the presence of noise. Fundamental frequency measures such as F0-mean and F0-SD and durational measures such as speech and pause rates were all found to be higher for lecture mode of delivery. Talkers showed similar vowel-articulatory changes under the two modes of delivery. When lecturing in the presence of noise, talkers significantly reduced the length of pauses and also utilized a combination of vowel-articulatory strategies to overcome the presence of noise. The results suggest the need to investigate talkers’ speech adaptation in real classroom environments in terms of correlates of speech intelligibility and to reconsider classroom acoustical guidelines in view of both listener and talker intelligibilities.

  • The acoustic designer: Joining soundscape and architectural acoustics in
           architectural design education
    • Authors: Alessia Milo
Abstract: Building Acoustics, Ahead of Print.
This article discusses the integration of acoustic design approaches into architectural design education settings. Solving architectural acoustic problems has been for centuries one of the primary aims of theories and experiments in acoustics. Recent contributions offered by the soundscape approach have highlighted broader desirable aims which acoustic designers should pursue, fostering ecological reasoning on the acoustic environment and its perception as a whole. Drawing from the available literature, some examples are brought to show the integration of architectural acoustics and soundscape approaches into the realm of architectural design education, highlighting the significance of specific design situations and aural training techniques in learning contexts.

  • Acoustic performance of countersunk micro-perforated panel in multilayer
           porous material
    • Authors: L Yuvaraj, S Jeyanthi
      First page: 3
Abstract: Building Acoustics, Ahead of Print.
This study investigates the acoustic performance of a countersunk micro-perforated panel, along with two distinct porous materials used in a multilayer porous absorber configuration. Additive manufacturing is applied to create sub-millimeter perforation with different hole spacings on polymer micro-perforated panels. Experiments are conducted in an impedance tube, in which the effects of the perforation ratio, air gap, and varying porous layer configurations on the sound absorption capabilities are investigated. For validation, considering the converging hole profile in the micro-perforated panel, an integration method with end correction is used to calculate the tapered section impedance, and the traditional Maa theory is used for the uniform hole. The theoretical impedance of the multilayer absorber is calculated using the transfer matrix method and subsequently compared to the experimental results. The results demonstrate that the countersunk hole micro-perforated panel exhibits a significant improvement in sound absorption, and the introduction of porous materials extends the sound absorption bandwidth. Furthermore, the results indicate that the sound absorption capability depends on the porous material placement in the multilayer absorber configuration.

This article presents an innovative application of the frequency domain decomposition method based on an acoustic and vibration response. Frequency domain decomposition method has been frequently used for operational modal analysis testing in the last decade to identify modal parameters for in-situ case studies. For these studies, the outputs of the vibration response through accelerometers have been employed in the analysis. In this article, the frequency domain decomposition method is employed, for the first time, to analyze both acoustic and vibration response of the building which is a novel application in building vibration response. As a case study, a cylindrical shaped seven-story building, which appears to be subjected to a vibration problem, was selected. In this research, both acoustic and vibration responses are captured to determine the source of this unknown excitation. The results show that using microphones, as an acoustic response, can be as reliable as accelerometers to identify forced vibration.

Studies in the literature suggest that factors influencing soundscape perception are based heavily on sound environments and auditory perception. Nevertheless, in studying the soundscape perception of people living in certain acoustic environments, cultural, social and habitual criteria should be taken into consideration. Residential environments are where people spend most of their time. Therefore, understanding the soundscape perception in the residential context is significant for indoor soundscape studies. This research investigates the residential soundscape perception differences of two different culture groups living in Ankara, Turkey. A total of 405 Arab and Turkish residents are included in the study. The questionnaire findings are statistically analysed using one-way analysis of variance and t-test. The results suggest that the sound environment in a house setting is equally important for both culture groups, while the Arab residents showed a higher satisfaction level from their present sound environment in their residences. Furthermore, statistically significant differences have been found based on cultural variances of the two groups regarding the overall soundscape perception, sound source loudness, frequency of occurrence, and sound favourability evaluations.

  • Classroom acoustics: Listening problems in children
    • Authors: Flavia Gheller, Elisa Lovo, Athena Arsie, Roberto Bovo

Abstract: Building Acoustics, Ahead of Print.
The acoustic quality of classrooms is crucial for children’s listening skills and consequently for their learning. Listening abilities in kids are still developing, and an environment with inadequate acoustic characteristics may create additional problems in speech perception and phonetic recognition. Background noise or reverberation may cause auditory processing problems and greater cognitive effort. There are also other elements which can make difficulty in listening and understanding in noisy environments an even more serious problem, such as learning disabilities, mild to severe hearing loss or bilingualism. Therefore, it is important to improve the acoustic quality of the classrooms, taking into account the specific needs of children in terms of signal-to-noise ratio and reverberation time, in order to ensure a proper quality of listening. The aim of this work is to analyse, through the review of previous studies, the impact that the acoustic of classrooms has on children’s listening skills and learning activities.

  • Long-term care as contested acoustical space: Exploring resident
           relationships and identities in sound

Abstract: Building Acoustics, Ahead of Print.
As the global population ages, residential care facilities are challenged to create positive living environments for people in later life. Health care acoustics are increasingly recognized as a key design factor in the experience of well-being for long-term care residents; however, acoustics are being conceptualized predominantly within the medical model. Just as the modern hospital battles disease with technology, sterility and efficiency, health care acoustics are receiving similar treatment. Materialist efforts towards acoustical separation evoke images of containment, quarantine and control, as if sound was something to be isolated. Sound becomes part of the contested space of long-term care that exists in tension between hospital and home. The move towards acoustical separation denies the social significance of sound in residents’ lives. Sound does not displace care; it emplaces care and the social relationships therein. Drawing upon ethnographic fieldwork in a Canadian long-term care facility, this article will use a phenomenological lens to explore how relationships are shaped in sound among residents living in long-term care. Ethnographic vignettes illustrate how the free flow of music through the care unit incited collective engagement among residents, reduced barriers to sharing social space and constructed new social identity. The article concludes that residents’ relationships are shaped within the acoustical milieu of the care unit and that to impose acoustical separation between residents’ living spaces may further isolate residents who are already at risk of loneliness.
