  • Corpus Approaches to Language Ideology
    • Authors: Vessey R.
      First page: 277
Abstract: This paper outlines how corpus linguistics—and more specifically the corpus-assisted discourse studies approach—can add useful dimensions to studies of language ideology. First, it is argued that the identification of words of high, low, and statistically significant frequency can help in the identification and exploration of language ideologies within corpora. The frequency of linguistic patterns and discursive representations may reveal trends in explicit representations of languages (i.e. metalanguage) and elisions where assumptions are made about the role of languages (i.e. implicit language ideologies). Secondly, collocation data can aid researchers in gaining greater insight into the ways in which languages are being represented (or not) within sites identified through frequency and statistical significance. Finally, the use of dispersion plots can help researchers to identify sites with high- and low-frequency items for closer analysis. The paper concludes with some of the limitations of the corpus linguistic approach in studying language ideologies. Examples are drawn from a larger comparative study of French and English language ideologies in corpora of Canadian newspapers.

  • Explicit and Implicit Learning: Exploring Their Simultaneity and Immediate
           Effectiveness
    • Authors: Bell PK.
      First page: 297
Abstract: Do adults learn the same syntactic second language (L2) form explicitly and implicitly simultaneously during meaning-based exposure, and does the type of learning (explicit and/or implicit) affect subsequent performance. In this study, 81 anglophones completed comprehension tasks providing incidental exposure to a semi-artificial language (English lexis, German syntax). A surprise grammaticality-judgement test (GJT) measured performance with the novel syntax. Source attributions and verbal reports provided information on type of learning (implicit and/or explicit), which were analysed in an exploratory fashion to classify within-participant implicit and explicit learning. Sixty-three participants demonstrated both types of learning, which suggests that extant binary classifications of type of learning may be inadequate. Furthermore, there were no significant performance differences on the GJT based on type of learning despite poor performance overall. The interpretation of the findings considers within-participant explicit and implicit learning measures and research issues when comparing the effectiveness of initial explicit learning and implicit learning on immediate performance.

  • A Feature-based Contrastive Approach to the L2 Acquisition of Specificity
    • Authors: Cho J; Slabakova R.
      First page: 318
Abstract: This study examined the acquisition of the Russian indefinite determiners (kakoj-to ‘which-to’ and kakoj-nibud’ ‘which-nibud’’) encoding scopal specificity by English and Korean native speakers within the feature-based contrastive framework (Lardiere 2008, 2009). The specificity markers kakoj-to and kakoj-nibud’ are reflections of different values of three major nominal features: definiteness, scopal specificity, and referentiality. The learning task for each functional item differs with respect to mapping and reconfiguration of the feature combinations. Our experimental data suggest that the morpheme kakoj-to was acquired early since English (some) and Korean (eotteon ‘some’) have the corresponding morphemes with the same featural representation as the Russian kakoj-to. The morpheme kakoj-nibud’ presented a greater difficulty since its featural make-up is not overtly realized in English or Korean, that is, learners had to reassemble the target feature set. Such developmental patterns provide evidence that feature reassembly poses a challenge in second language acquisition. On the basis of the findings, pedagogical implications are discussed.

  • Expanding the Notion of the Linguistic Repertoire: On the Concept of
Spracherleben —The Lived Experience of Language
    • Authors: Busch B.
      First page: 340
Abstract: The aim of this article is to explore the connections between the concepts of the linguistic repertoire, of language ideologies, and of lived experience of language. In foregrounding the concept of Spracherleben, the lived experience of language, this article contributes to the ongoing debate on how to rethink the notion of the linguistic repertoire considering that current phenomena such as increased mobility, migration, or participation in transnational networks of communication make it difficult to take, as Gumperz (1964) did in his original concept, relatively stable speech communities as point of departure. The notion of the lived experience of language which I am elaborating here emphasizes the intersubjective dimension of language as a gesture toward the other and casts light on the often-neglected bodily and emotional dimensions of perception and speech. Attaching particular importance to the perspective of the experiencing subject, the concept is based on phenomenological approaches, as developed in the 1940s by the French philosopher Merleau-Ponty.

  • The Effect of Task Planning on L2 Performance and L2 Development in
           Text-Based Synchronous Computer-Mediated Communication
    • Authors: Hsu H.
      First page: 359
Abstract: This study explored the effect of two planning conditions [the simultaneous use of rehearsal and careful online planning (ROP), and the careful online planning alone (OP)] on L2 production complexity and accuracy and the subsequent development of these two linguistic areas in the context of text-based synchronous computer-mediated communication. Intermediate to advanced adult ESL learners (N = 33) participated in the study. They completed four picture-based narrative tasks under the two planning conditions over a two-week period via text-chat. Two tasks were used as experimental tasks to gauge immediate planning effect on L2 production and the other two as new tasks to gauge L2 development. Results showed that both types of planning condition supported immediate production complexity but the ROP condition was more effective in leading to more accurate use of grammatical verb forms. With regard to the subsequent development of production complexity and accuracy, the ROP condition was more effective in leading to improvement on clausal complexity as well as control over the use of grammatical verb forms and avoidance of general errors.

  • English Majors’ Self-Regulatory Control Strategy Use in Academic Writing
and its Relation to L2 Motivation
    • Authors: Csizér K; Tankó G.
      First page: 386
Abstract: Apart from L2 motivation, self-regulation is also increasingly seen as a key variable in L2 learning in many foreign language learning contexts because classroom-centered instructive language teaching might not be able to provide sufficient input for students. Therefore, taking responsibility and regulating the learning processes and positive motivational dispositions are needed for successful achievement. The aim of this article is first to describe English majors’ self-regulatory control strategy use by creating students’ profiles concerning these variables. The second aim of the study is to investigate the relationship of control strategy use, motivational dispositions, and anxiety/self-efficacy beliefs in a context where academic writing is being taught. To achieve these aims, a standardized paper and pencil questionnaire was designed to collect data on students’ control strategies and their dispositions toward L2 motivation as well as their writing anxiety and self-efficacy beliefs. Our sample consisted of 222 first-year English majors at a large Hungarian university located in Budapest. Based on descriptive, correlational, and cluster analytical procedures, our main results indicate that despite the fact that English majors are motivated to enhance their abilities in professional writing, only a third of them seem to possess the ability and willingness to control their writing processes despite the fact that self-regulatory strategy use is linked to an increased level of motivation and self-efficacy and to a decreased level of writing anxiety.

  • Language Teacher Immunity: A Double-Edged Sword
    • Authors: Hiver P; Dörnyei Z.
      First page: 405
Abstract: In this paper we introduce a new concept termed “teacher immunity”. We propose that this immunity emerges from the accrued experiences of coping with disturbances and problems in stressful teaching environments, and that it functions as an indispensable protective armor allowing language teachers to survive the unavoidable hassles of classroom practice. We draw parallels with biological immunity and established constructs in psychology, while describing the development of this emergent immunity through the framework of self-organization from complexity theory. We further argue that, similar to biological immunity, teacher immunity can have potential negative consequences if it develops into a maladaptive form that is associated with a rigid and conservative practice as well as a general resistance to methodological change or innovation. Therefore, the article concludes by outlining how counterproductive teacher immunity can be “rebooted” through a three-step sequence that involves triggering the process through awareness raising, familiarizing teachers with productive coping strategies, and encouraging the formation of appropriate narratives that stabilize the transformation.
