  • Harnessing the Professional Value of a Transnational Disposition:
Perceptions of Migrant English Language Teachers in Hong Kong
    • Authors: Gu M; Canagarajah S.
      Pages: 718 - 740
Abstract: This article investigates the experiences in knowledge development and sharing of a group of migrant teachers from different Asian countries who are teaching in secondary schools in Hong Kong. Seeing dispositions as the key to professionalization and professional contributions, it explores the possibilities and challenges in harnessing the professional value of their transnational disposition. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to investigate the participants’ position in the workplace, negotiations of the local curriculum and classroom practice, and professional interactions with colleagues and parents. The findings show that these teachers actively respond to invisibility and marginalization by drawing from their transcultural disposition to creatively but cautiously transform pedagogical practices and discourses. It is found that the presence of migrant professionals in local context provides opportunities for critical reflexivity and transnational awareness among local professionals. It is implied that the changes in thinking and awareness may lead to broad-based ideological and structural changes, which in turn promotes productive knowledge exchange.

  • Who Are ‘Long-term English Learners’' Using Classroom Interactions
to Deconstruct a Manufactured Learner Label
    • Authors: Kibler A; Karam F, Futch Ehrlich V, et al.
      Pages: 741 - 765
Abstract: In the context of recent debates for and against the reality of ‘long-term English learners (LTELs)’ in US secondary schools, the diversity of these students’ classroom experiences and opportunities to develop academically valued forms of English is often overlooked. This analysis draws upon a data from middle school classrooms in the South Atlantic region of the USA and focuses particularly on the classroom experiences of six 6th-grade students classified as ‘English learners’ who have been in US schools since kindergarten. We use a multiple case study approach (Stake 2006) to analyze qualitative classroom observations completed in ‘mainstream’ classrooms alongside teacher and student interviews to examine the extent to which classroom-based peer and teacher–student interactions offer opportunities for language acquisition/development. Varied patterns of engagement and interaction were found, but most students had relatively few substantive academic discussions with peers or teachers. The diversity of our six students’ experiences, and of the language expertise they demonstrate, suggests that ‘LTEL’ obscures more than it elucidates regarding these students’ academic and linguistic strengths and needs.

  • Are Word Association Responses Really the First Words that Come to
           Mind'
    • Authors: Playfoot D; Balint T, Pandya V, et al.
      Pages: 607 - 624
Abstract: Word association has been a popular tool for research in linguistics and psychology over the last century. The paradigm presents participants with a cue word and asks them to respond with the first associated word that comes to mind. Inferences about the structure and organization of the lexicon have been made on the basis of the findings of word association tasks, and on the assumption that responses reflect the strongest link between words in the participants' vocabulary. The procedure adopted in traditional word association tasks does not guarantee that this is the case. This article presents two experiments that aimed to determine whether or not participants make deliberate and strategic responses in word association tasks. Findings indicate that word association responses are likely to reflect the first word that participants activate in their lexicon.

  • An Integrated Approach to Metaphor and Framing in Cognition, Discourse,
and Practice, with an Application to Metaphors for Cancer
    • Authors: Semino E; Demjén Z, Demmen J.

Abstract: In this article, we examine the notion of ‘framing’ as a function of metaphor from three interrelated perspectives—cognitive, discourse-based, and practice-based—with the aim of providing an adaptable blueprint of good practice in framing analysis. We bring together cognitive and discourse-based approaches in an integrated multi-level framework, and demonstrate its value to both theory and practice by applying it to a corpus-based study of violence-related metaphors for cancer. Through the application of this framework, we show that there are merits in applying the notion of framing at different levels of generality in metaphor analysis (conceptual metaphors, metaphor scenarios, and linguistic metaphors), depending on one’s research aims. We warn that researchers and practitioners need to remain aware of what conclusions can and cannot be drawn at each level, and we show the theoretical and practical advantages of taking all three levels into account when considering the use of metaphor for communicating about sensitive topics such as cancer. We emphasize the need for a ‘rich’ definition of framing, including aspects such as agency, evaluation, and emotion.

  • Contextual Word Learning with Form-Focused and Meaning-Focused Elaboration
    • Authors: Elgort I; Candry S, Boutorwick T, et al.
      Pages: 646 - 667
Abstract: Contextual L2 word learning may be facilitated by increasing readers’ engagement with form and meaning of novel words. In the present study, two adult L2 populations, Chinese and Dutch speakers, read English sentences that contained novel vocabulary. These contextual exposures were accompanied either by form-focused elaboration (i.e. word-writing) or by meaning-focused elaboration (i.e. actively deriving word meaning from context). Immediate and delayed offline and online measures of word knowledge showed superior learning outcomes for the word-writing treatment. This finding is aligned with the predictions of the lexical quality hypothesis (Perfetti and Hart 2002), highlighting the added value of more precise encoding of a word’s form, in addition to learning its meaning. The key pedagogical implication of this study is that a simple act of copying novel words, while processing meaningful L2 input, may significantly boost quality of lexical knowledge.

  • The Best of Both Worlds: Combining Cognitive Linguistics and Pedagogic
           Tasks to Teach English Conditionals
    • Authors: Dolgova Jacobsen N.
      Pages: 668 - 693
Abstract: Due to their internal complexity, English conditionals represent a challenge for L2 learners; furthermore, most ESL grammar books lack precise explanations of conditional meanings and usage contexts. As a solution, cognitive linguistic research on conditionals (Dancygier and Sweetser 2005), based on theory of conceptual blending and mirroring human cognition processes, could be very beneficial for L2 learners. In this study, elements of cognitive linguistic analysis of English hypothetical conditionals were incorporated into L2 learning materials. The design of the study was quasi-experimental, with three groups (N = 57) participating: cognitive, task-supported, and control. Pedagogic consciousness-raising tasks were used to provide a context for meaningful practice for cognitive and task-supported groups. The research questions explored the efficacy of different types of instruction for L2 development of English conditional phrases, as measured by a post-test and a delayed post-test. The findings of t-test and analysis of variance procedures (p = .001) indicate that participants from the cognitive group outperformed the participants from the task-supported and control groups and demonstrated a higher degree of understanding of conditional usage contexts.

  • Explaining Hooke’s Law: Definitional Practices in a CLIL Physics
           Classroom
    • Authors: Kääntä L; Kasper G, Piirainen-Marsh A.
      Pages: 694 - 717
Abstract: This article examines how a teacher in a Content-and-Language-Integrated-Learning (CLIL) program engages in various definitional practices during a plenary episode in a physics class taught in English in Finland. The episode focuses on explaining Hooke’s law, which involves defining its key concepts and their relations as instructable matters. Using multimodal conversation analysis, the article shows how the teacher accomplishes definitions and definition-related actions through talk and a range of embodied and material resources. The different configurations of resources are coordinated to elucidate the key concepts, to contextualize them in relation to the larger activity, and to situate them in the domain of physical laws. The teacher’s actions occasion recipient responses from students that contingently shape the evolving lesson. The findings contribute to understanding how the installation of knowledge about a physical law is accomplished as the teacher’s professional work in a CLIL setting. Thus, for CLIL science teacher education, the study indicates the indispensable need to attend to the artful coordination of multilingual and multimodal practices that teachers employ to define and contextualize physical phenomena.
