  • Task Complexity, Cognitive Load, and L1 Speech
    • Authors: Lee J.
      Pages: 506 - 539
Abstract: Relationships among task characteristics, L2 performance, and interlanguage development are of interest both for SLA research and the design of syllabuses and language teaching materials. Complexity has been identified as a promising, but methodologically problematic, task design feature. A study was conducted of the effects of progressive increases in the complexity (operationalized as number of elements) of three versions of each of three tasks on the syntactic complexity and lexical diversity of the speech of 42 English native speakers. Data on native speaker performance are important because they reveal task complexity effects unfiltered by non-native competence. Independent evidence that greater task complexity increased cognitive load was shown by participant self-ratings of perceived difficulty, mental effort, and stress, shorter prospective duration estimates and, using dual-task methodology, slower reaction times. Mid-complex versions of the three tasks elicited the most complex syntactic structures, and the most complex versions elicited the greatest lexical diversity. Implications are noted for the design of parallel studies with non-native speakers, along with suggested methodological improvements for future research with native and non-native populations.

  • Research Trends in Applied Linguistics from 2005 to 2016: A Bibliometric
           Analysis and Its Implications
    • Authors: Lei L; Liu D.
      Pages: 540 - 561
Abstract: Using data of articles from 42 Social Science Citation Index (SSCI)-indexed journals of applied linguistics, this study renders a bibliometric analysis of the 2005–16 research trends in the field. The analysis focuses on, among other issues, the most frequently discussed topics, the most highly cited publications, and the changes that have occurred in the research trends. The results show that while most of the frequently discussed topics have remained popular over the 12 years, some (especially sociocultural/functional/identity issues) have experienced a significant increase of interest, but some others (particularly certain phonological/grammatical/generative linguistic topics) have witnessed a substantial decrease of interest. There has also been an increased use of new theories including those coming from distant disciplines. Furthermore, while the number of publications from traditional publication powerhouses, such as the USA, has shown a slow, albeit steady decline proportionally, those from some other countries, such as China, have exhibited a substantial steady rise. The latter countries’ increasing publication rates appear to have contributed to the increased discussion of issues specific to their context. Implications of the findings are also discussed.

  • ‘Mental Workouts for Couch Potatoes’: Executive Function Variation
           among Spanish–English Bilingual Young Adults
    • Authors: Smith S; Briggs J, Pothier H, et al.
      Pages: 413 - 431
Abstract: Research has yet to reach a definitive consensus on whether or how bilingualism confers benefits on Executive Function (EF): numerous studies show an EF advantage for bilinguals over monolinguals, while others indicate no significant differences. These inconsistencies demonstrate that the mechanisms behind a potential bilingualism-to-EF relationship remain unclear. Multiple factors likely impact EF outcomes among bilinguals, including proficiency and extent and type and environment of language usage. The current study explored EF skills among a relatively homogeneous sample of 50 Spanish–English bilingual young adults to provide insights into the environmental and individual characteristics that contribute to EF diversity. Hierarchical regression modeling revealed that more balanced bilingual language usage in specific home-based tasks (particularly TV watching), and higher self-reported ability in Spanish and English significantly predicted higher EF. Results support the developing empirical consensus that greater engagement in dual-language contexts bears a positive relationship to EF. The finding that watching TV with a balanced language ratio has a significant positive relationship to EF opens strong potential opportunities for bilinguals to access EF benefits with minimal effort.

  • Tracking Microgenetic Changes in Authorial Voice Development from a
           Complexity Theory Perspective

Abstract: Engaging a complexity theory view of learning, this study examined an atypical timescale for tracking L2 authorial voice development through the interaction of cognitive processes that inform voice construction. A microgenetic analysis of seven adult Japanese learners of English in a three-week writing course designed to help students develop their authorial voices revealed learning dimensions that were (i) wide in breadth, (ii) isomorphic in their rate, (iii) triggered by repeated tasks in a teaching-and-learning cycle facilitated by stylistic analyses, (iv) variegated across learners, and (v) erratic and nonlinear. Interactions also showed signs of stabilizing during the final phase of the intervention. These findings are consistent with a complexity theory view of L2 development, demonstrating that repeated and similar learning tasks implicate emergentist interpretations of language and literacy development. This article contributes to understanding authorial voice construction across atypical timescales and invites L2 studies to apply timescales of development more relativistically. This study also emphasizes the importance of further exploring microgenetic interactions for understanding the ontogenesis of authorial voice and for conceptualizing its development inside and outside the classroom.

  • Is Vocabulary Knowledge Sufficient for Word-Meaning Inference' An
Investigation of the Role of Morphological Awareness in Adult L2 Learners
           of Chinese
    • Authors: Ke S; Koda K.
      Pages: 456 - 477
Abstract: This study examined whether vocabulary knowledge is sufficient for second language (L2) word-meaning inferencing. Specifically, it investigated the role of the learner’s sensitivity to a word’s morphological structure (referred to ‘morphological awareness’ or ‘MA’ hereafter) as additional support that enhances multi-character word-meaning inferencing in adult learners of Chinese as a second language. Two hypotheses were tested: (i) L2 vocabulary knowledge is the sole predictor of word-meaning inferencing involving morphologically simple multi-character words. (ii) L2 vocabulary knowledge and MA jointly contribute to word-meaning inferencing involving morphologically complex multi-character words. A set of paper-and-pencil tests was administered to 56 English-speaking learners of L2 Chinese, measuring their L2 vocabulary knowledge, MA, and word-meaning inferencing ability. The results are as follows: L2 vocabulary knowledge contributed directly and consistently to inferring the meanings of multi-character words. Yet, L2 vocabulary knowledge was not the sole predictor of L2 word-meaning inferencing; L2 MA made an additional unique contribution. Last, L2 MA contributed indirectly to L2 word-meaning inferencing through the mediation of L2 vocabulary knowledge.

  • Sensitivity to Language-based Rejection in Intercultural Communication:
The Role of Language Mindsets and Implications for Migrants’
           Cross-cultural Adaptation
    • Authors: Lou N; Noels K.
      Pages: 478 - 505
Abstract: Recent research conceptualizes language mindsets as a ‘lens’ through which learners view language challenges as either deficits of aptitude (i.e. entity beliefs) or opportunities to improve (i.e. incremental beliefs). Extending this meaning-system approach in an intercultural context, we proposed that language mindsets influence migrants’ experience of intercultural interaction and cultural adaptation through language-based rejection sensitivity (RS) (i.e. the tendency to anxiously expect rejection from native speakers due to a lack of language proficiency). Two studies of 292 English-as-a-second-language speakers in Canada demonstrated that those who held or were primed with entity beliefs (vs. incremental beliefs) reported stronger language-based RS, which in turn predicted more intergroup anxiety towards members of the target language community, less perceived connectedness with the host country, and worse cross-cultural adaptation. These effects persisted after controlling for perceived language competence and length of residence, thereby highlighting the unique importance of language mindsets in predicting intercultural communication and cross-cultural adaptation. Migrants’ settlement programmes that promote incremental beliefs may thereby lessen concern about social rejection and reduce their anxiety when using a second language.
