  • A Parisian Boudoir in London: The South Kensington Museum Sérilly
           Room
    • Authors: Marchand M.
      Pages: 167 - 183
Abstract: In 1869, the South Kensington Museum, now the Victoria and Albert Museum, purchased the panelling, painted ceiling, windows and chimneypiece from an eighteenth-century Parisian room created in 1778 for the Marquise de Sérilly. This boudoir, as it was then called, was exhibited furnished at least from December 1869 and can thus be considered as one of the first period rooms ever to be installed in a museum. The first part of this article examines what made the Sérilly room distinct in comparison to other similar types of display and to the other objects exhibited in the galleries. It demonstrates that the period room can be considered a ‘museum-made’ object and underlines the specificity of the experience it offered to nineteenth-century visitors. The second part focuses on the significations of this singular object within the context of a Victorian institution with pedagogical ambitions. It shows how the transformation of this former domestic interior into a period room impacted its original status and meanings in a way that is revealing the museum’s moralizing ambitions. In so doing, it argues that the Sérilly room offered the visitors a unique opportunity for self-definition by inviting them to construct themselves as morally superior subjects.

  • Between the Material Object and its Representation: Chinese Garments on
Non-Chinese Bodies at the Sino-African Exhibition of 1911–1912 in
           Finland
    • Authors: Koivunen L.
      Pages: 184 - 201
Abstract: This article explores the effects of cultural cross-dressing on the balance between the material object and its representation in the context of exhibitions. It builds on Timothy Mitchell’s ideas of the exhibitionary order to demonstrate how early twentieth-century western exhibition practices were not uniform but open to experimentation in order to produce increasingly effective displays. The article focuses on the Sino-African missionary exhibition arranged in Finland in 1911–1912 in which mannequins and dress racks were replaced by living displays. Thus, exhibition visitors encountered the organizer and his assistants dressed in traditional brightly-coloured Chinese costumes. In addition to revealing a variety of motives and purposes behind this unorthodox handling and presentation of clothes, the article draws attention to the intertwinement of bodies and dresses originating from different cultures and to the meanings they bring to each other and to the exhibition as a whole. Cultural cross-dressing served to create a lively, multisensory and spectacular show, and it was an effective tool, in the context of the Sino-African missionary exhibition, for making Chinese material culture intelligible and meaningful to its audience. This particular mode of representation both blurred and heightened the spectator’s experience of cultural difference between East and West.

  • An Examination of the 1960s Attempt at a New Brand Identity for the
           General Post Office
    • Authors: Cabianca D.
      Pages: 121 - 137
Abstract: In 1965, the UK designer F.H.K. Henrion was commissioned by the General Post Office to survey the state of design within the organization. The survey report was to form the basis for commissioning a new corporate identity, or ‘house style’, intended to visually unify the various operational divisions of the GPO as well as cultivate the image of a modern and progressive public entity in the minds of the public. Ultimately, thanks to factors that actively or indirectly hampered his efforts, Henrion’s attempt to produce a new, modern identity would, in large part, collapse. While it is true many professional projects do not bear fruit, one does not typically have a detailed account of the factors which might lead an initiative to fail. In this instance, archival records present a tale of intransigence precipitated by career civil servants determined to secure their positions, the conscious obstruction of change because of professional jealousy, and an overall general ineptitude when strength of leadership was required. This paper uses records from client correspondence, PO Board minutes, and internal memos housed in the British Postal Museum to trace the development of Henrion’s efforts from the client’s perspective.

  • Modernity, Method and Minimal Means: Typewriters, Typing Manuals and
           Document Design
    • Authors: Walker S.
      Pages: 138 - 153
Abstract: This essay is about the contribution that typing manuals and typists have made to the history of graphic language and communication design, and that typewriter composition has played in typographic education and design practice, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s. The limited technical capabilities of typewriters are discussed in relation to the rules in typing manuals for articulating and organizing the structure of text. Such manuals were used to train typists who went on to produce documents of considerable complexity within what typographers would consider to be minimal means in terms of flexibility in the use of letterforms and space.

  • Early Argentine Computer Art at the Victoria & Albert Museum
    • Authors: Lenz M.
      Pages: 154 - 166
Abstract: The Victoria & Albert Museum holds over 700 objects from Latin America. Currently on display in the World Ceramics Galleries are 17th-century ceramic búcaro vases from Mexico, whilst the recently opened Europe Galleries 1600–1800 include a display devoted to material from Latin America. However, less well known are the V&A’s holdings of early digital art made in the late 1960s by Argentine artists associated with the Centro de Arte y Comunicación (CAyC). Research on early computer art practices, specifically art generated in the 1960s and 1970s on mainframe computers and transistor-operated minicomputers, has largely focused on Europe and North America.11This predominance partly reflects the fact that sites of artistic production were informed by the prohibitive costs of the emergent technologies.22Yet innovative art and technology networks developed beyond this geographical sphere. This article explores a small but intriguing number of digital artworks in the V&A’s collection in relation to their cultural and historical context. The article considers the role of CAyC in facilitating the use of the computer as a creative tool and experimental medium, and sets out why this is of relevance to design historians.
