  • You Must Remember This: Iconic News Photographs and Collective Memory
    • Authors: Cohen A; Boudana S, Frosh P.
      Pages: 453 - 479
Abstract: “Known for being known,” iconic photographs are widely circulated and symbolically powerful images that catalyze public discussion and are etched into the fabric of collective memory for succeeding generations—or so the literature postulates. Based on a multi-method research (including focus groups and a national survey), our study aimed to identify the most prevalent domestic-Israeli and foreign (non-Israeli) iconic news photographs that are recognized by the Israeli public, and to expose key features of their place in Israeli collective memory. We found that only a handful of images were recalled by a majority of people. These are images of conflict, trauma and triumph, which inspired mostly emotional reactions, especially among the eldest, who also demonstrated higher recognition scores. This article examines what such differences in recognition and reactions between photographs and between groups of individuals mean for theories of collective memory and the presumed mnemonic power of visual media.

  • Time to #Protest: Selective Exposure, Cascading Activation, and Framing in
           Social Media
    • Authors: Aruguete N; Calvo E.
      Pages: 480 - 502
Abstract: In social media, sharing posts exposes a larger number of users to the preferred content of their peers. As users select or discard content, they collectively highlight facets of events or issues as to promote a particular interpretation. This article describes how social media users frame political events by selectively sharing content that is cognitively congruent with their beliefs. We model cognitive dissonance modeling time-to-retweet and exemplify the proposed theory with a study of recent protest events in Argentina.

  • Broadening Exposure to Climate Change News' How Framing and Political
Orientation Interact to Influence Selective Exposure
    • Authors: Feldman L; Hart P.
      Pages: 503 - 524
Abstract: Two online news browsing experiments were conducted with national samples of U.S. adults to test the effects of six different climate change frames on selective exposure to climate change news; the frames emphasized the implications of climate change for either public health, the economy, national security, the environment, morality, or political conflict. Effects were compared between liberal-Democrats, moderate-Independents, and conservative-Republicans. In Study 1, participants could select only from articles about climate change. In Study 2, climate change news competed for attention with other news topics. Results show that a public health frame increased exposure to climate change news relative to other frames; however, these increases were confined to liberal-Democrats and, in Study 1, also moderate-Independents. Conservative-Republicans’ exposure to climate news was unaffected by framing. Overall, the findings suggest framing plays only a limited role in driving exposure to climate change news.

  • Broadcast Versus Viral Spreading: The Structure of Diffusion Cascades and
           Selective Sharing on Social Media
    • Authors: Liang H.
      Pages: 525 - 546
Abstract: Sharing cross-ideological messages on social media exposes people to political diversity and generates other benefits for society. This study argues that the diffusion patterns of political messages can influence the degree of selective sharing. Using a large-scale diffusion dataset from Twitter, this study found that messages that spread through multiple steps are more likely to involve cross-ideological sharing. Furthermore, the study found that this positive relationship is mediated by the distance between the sharers and originators of the messages and suppressed by the number of connections among the sharers. Overall, the study found that the viral diffusion model, in contrast to the broadcast model, increases the likelihood of cross-ideological sharing and thus increases political diversity on social media.

  • Deception in Mobile Dating Conversations
    • Authors: Markowitz D; Hancock J.
      Pages: 547 - 569
Abstract: A salient issue for online romantic relationships is the possibility of deception, but it is unclear how lies are communicated before daters meet. We collected mobile dating deceptions from the discovery phase, a conversation period after daters match on profiles but before a face-to-face interaction. Study 1 found that nearly two-thirds of lies were driven by impression management, particularly self-presentation and availability management goals. Study 2 found that approximately 7% of messages were deceptive, and content patterns were consistent with Study 1. Across studies, the participant’s lying rate was correlated with the perceived lying rate of the partner. We discuss the implications of these data in relation to impression management, deception theory, and online dating research.

  • Popular Digital Imagination: Grass-Root Conceptualization of the Mobile
           Phone in the Global South
    • Authors: Oreglia E; Ling R.
      Pages: 570 - 589
Abstract: In the realm of digital technologies, imagination is often evoked to describe the creative quality possessed by visionary technology developers. In contrast, we describe the idea of gaining a “digital imagination” as a process through which the non-elite—here, potential and new users of digital technologies in Myanmar and rural China—envision something that is not yet part of their lives and thus begin appropriating it. The digital imagination is a framing that prefigures everyday uses of technology and is shaped by individual aspirations, the organization of society, and images of digital media that exist in the surrounding environment. A locally grounded imagination can provide locally appropriated innovation that is often lacking in digital technologies developed in urban areas.

  • Investigating the Interplay Between Identity Gaps and Communication
Patterns in Predicting Relational Intentions in Families in the United
           States
    • Authors: Phillips K; Ledbetter A, Soliz J, et al.
      Pages: 590 - 611
Abstract: We tested the degree to which identity gaps mediate the association between family communication patterns and relational intentions. Participants included 498 emerging adults from the United States. Both personal-enacted and relational-communal identity gaps mediated the relationship between conversation and conformity orientation and relational intentions. Moreover, family identification (the extent to which one feels a sense of connection with their family group) moderated the mediation effect, altering the relationship between the personal-enacted and relational-communal identity gaps and relational intentions. Such that, when family identification is low it does not buffer the negative effect of the relational-communal gap, and when it is high, it exacerbates the negative effect of the personal-enacted identity gap on relational intentions. Specifically, the direction of moderating effect of family identification was in opposite directions for these two identity gaps. The only direct effect was a curvilinear relationship between conformity and relational intentions.

  • Peace Communication in Cross-border Media Flows
    • Authors: Kumar A; Semetko H.
      Pages: 612 - 635
Abstract: Peace communication in media flows fosters civil discourse, emphasizes shared culture, values, collective well-being, and works for reduction in violence and conflict. This study addresses a gap in the literature on citizen-initiated peace communication in the context of interstate relations, conflict and public diplomacy, with a focus on the understudied case of media flows between India and Pakistan, two nuclear-armed nations embroiled in perpetual enmity since the 1947 Partition. Revolutions in ICTs led to a shift in the dominant media flow from top-down and statist to bottom-up, with horizontal media flows fostered by individuals and groups now on social media platforms that opened up space for civil discourse. Dozens of different online citizen groups promoting peace on Facebook, YouTube and other platforms lead to the conclusion that peace communication in cross-border media flows indeed may have the potential to result in peace dividends in the form of fostering civil communication in shared values, culture, and collective well-being.

  • “I Just Google It”: Folk Theories of Distributed Discovery
    • Authors: Toff B; Nielsen R.
      Pages: 636 - 657
Abstract: A significant minority of people do not follow news regularly, and a growing number rely on distributed discovery (especially social media and search engines) to stay informed. Here, we analyze folk theories of news consumption. On the basis of an inductive analysis of 43 in-depth interviews with infrequent users of conventional news, we identify three complementary folk theories (“news finds me,” “the information is out there,” and “I don’t know what to believe”) that consumers draw on when making sense of their information environment. We show that the notion of folk theories help unpack the different, complementary, sometimes contradictory cultural resources people rely on as they navigate digital media and public affairs, and we argue that studying those who rarely engage directly with news media but do access information via social media and search provides a critical case study of the dynamics of an environment increasingly defined by platforms.
