  • The Strength of Peripheral Networks: Negotiating Attention and Meaning in
           Complex Media Ecologies
    • Authors: Bennett W; Segerberg A, Yang Y.
      Pages: 659 - 684
Abstract: Networked content flows that focus or fragment public attention are key communication processes in multimedia ecologies. Understandings of events may differ widely, as networked attention and framing processes move from core participants to more distant spectator publics. In the case of the Occupy Wall Street protests, peripheral social media networks of public figures and media organizations focused public attention on economic inequality. Although inequality was among many issues discussed by the activists, it was far less central to the protest core than problems with banks or democracy. Results showed how public attention to inequality was constructed through pulling and pushing interpretive frames between the core and periphery of dense communication networks. Various indicators of public attention—such as search trends, Wikipedia article edits, and legacy media coverage—all credited the protests with raising public awareness of inequality, even as attention to problems with banks grew at the protest core.

  • The Polarizing Effect of News Framing: Comparing the Mediating Roles of
Motivated Reasoning, Self-stereotyping, and Intergroup Animus
    • Authors: Han J; Federico C.
      Pages: 685 - 711
Abstract: Existing research on conflict framing in the news-media has focused disproportionately on political-party membership, where prior polarization between party elites implies strong pre-existing differences of opinion. To determine whether conflict framing can elicit polarization in the context of other important social identities, we compare the polarizing effects of conflict framing along partisan versus gender lines. In two experimental studies using different samples—i.e., college students (Study 1) and adult U.S. citizens (Study 2)—we found that framing news in terms of gender conflict polarized participants along gender lines. Moreover, polarization emerged primarily via increased self-stereotyping rather than gender-based motivated reasoning or increased gender-based animus. Importantly, this polarizing effect of gender-based conflict framing was not smaller than that of partisan conflict framing. The implications of our findings are discussed in light of work on media framing, social identity, and the formation of public opinion.

  • Psychological, Relational, and Emotional Effects of Self-Disclosure After
           Conversations With a Chatbot
    • Authors: Ho A; Hancock J, Miner A.
      Pages: 712 - 733
Abstract: Disclosing personal information to another person has beneficial emotional, relational, and psychological outcomes. When disclosers believe they are interacting with a computer instead of another person, such as a chatbot that can simulate human-to-human conversation, outcomes may be undermined, enhanced, or equivalent. Our experiment examined downstream effects after emotional versus factual disclosures in conversations with a supposed chatbot or person. The effects of emotional disclosure were equivalent whether participants thought they were disclosing to a chatbot or to a person. This study advances current understanding of disclosure and whether its impact is altered by technology, providing support for media equivalency as a primary mechanism for the consequences of disclosing to a chatbot.

  • Disaster Media Effects: A Systematic Review and Synthesis Based on the
Differential Susceptibility to Media Effects Model
    • Authors: Houston J; Spialek M, First J.
      Pages: 734 - 757
Abstract: Natural and human-caused disasters receive extensive media coverage that often includes images, video, and descriptions of death, injury, and destruction. Individual exposure to disaster media has been found to be associated with a variety of effects (e.g., mental health reactions) among children and adults in numerous studies. Despite evidence of disaster media effects, the literature is not well organized. To improve integration, we conducted a systematic review and used the Differential Susceptibility to Media Effects Model (DSMM) to organize results. We analyzed 66 studies, representing 78,643 participants, and found that the disaster media effects literature is built upon the theory of psychological trauma, that the role of uncertainty and social aspects of disaster media effects are understudied, and that transactional disaster media effect studies are nonexistent. Our analysis also indicates that adding a contextual category to the DSMM model is beneficial in synthesizing media effects. Opportunities for future research are discussed.

  • The Mediatization of the Air: Wireless Telegraphy and the Origins of a
           Transnational Space of Communication, 1900-1910s
    • Authors: Rikitianskaia M; Balbi G, Lobinger K.
      Pages: 758 - 779
Abstract: Airspace today is densely penetrated by Wi-Fi networks, GPS services, and broadcasting and mobile phone signals. This process, what we call the mediatization of the air, is not so new, as it began in the first two decades of the 20th century, with the advent of wireless telegraphy. Based on archival research, this paper shows that wireless telegraphy mediatized the air and made it a matter of common interest for formerly-disconnected international realms. The mediatized air transformed meteorology, timekeeping, mobility, and transportation, and challenged governance over aerial borders. Overall, this historical study contributes to a different narrative about mediatization by including an invisible and understudied phenomenon that today represents a basic and taken-for-granted infrastructure for global communication.

  • Counter-messages as Prevention or Promotion of Extremism'! The
           Potential Role of YouTubeRecommendation Algorithms
    • Authors: Schmitt J; Rieger D, Rutkowski O, et al.
      Pages: 780 - 808
Abstract: In order to serve as an antidote to extremist messages, counter-messages (CM) are placed in the same online environment as extremist content. Often, they are even tagged with similar keywords. Given that automated algorithms may define putative relationships between videos based on mutual topics, CM can appear directly linked to extremist content. This poses severe challenges for prevention programs using CM. This study investigates the extent to which algorithms influence the interrelatedness of counter- and extremist messages. By means of two exemplary information network analyses based on YouTube videos of two CM campaigns, we demonstrate that CM are closely—or even directly—connected to extremist content. The results hint at the problematic role of algorithms for prevention campaigns.

  • Empathy and the Hostile Media Phenomenon
    • Authors: Tsang S.
      Pages: 809 - 829
Abstract: Since partisan individuals from opposing sides of an issue are likely to perceive the exact same news story as being biased against their personal point of view, this study examines whether and how empathy impacts perception of media bias regarding news coverage of undocumented immigrants. Web-based experimental results (N = 585) showed that empathetic news stories have greater potential than non-empathetic stories to induce both sides to perceive news biases in the same direction. Nonetheless, additional analyses found that the drive behind such consistency in news processing may be due to individuals perceiving higher levels of media favorability toward their own side, but not a reduction in media hostility toward the opposing side.
