  • When You Exercise Your Avatar in a Virtual Game: The Role of Avatars’
Body Shape and Behavior in Users’ Health Behavior
    • Authors: Joo Y; Kim K.
Abstract: AbstractWe experience virtual worlds as avatars—we dress, move, engage in activities or interact with other users as avatars. Recent studies suggest that embodying an avatar does not only influence users’ behavior in a virtual environment, but it can also change users’ behavior in reality. However, little has been known about the role of an avatar's appearance in changing users’ behavior through embodying the avatar. We investigated how an online game avatar's body shape (obese vs. normal weight) and health behavior (healthy behavior vs. unhealthy behavior) can affect users’ health behavior after their virtual experience. Specifically, we conducted a laboratory experiment, and assigned participants to either an obese or a normal-weight avatar in a game. Half of the participants’ avatars performed healthy behaviors (engaged in physical activities and vegetable consumption), and the other half of participants performed unhealthy behaviors (engaged in sedentary behavior and binge-eating). After 20-min gameplay, participants were offered a box with high-sugar cookies, and also asked to use an exercising machine. According to the results, the normal avatar's healthy behavior increased participants’ exercising behavior (use of the exercising machine). However, the obese avatar's healthy behavior did not. Additional analyses revealed that using an avatar with an unhealthy lifestyle predicted male participants’ consumption of high-sugar cookies. The avatar's body shape alone did not independently predict neither participants’ exercising behavior nor cookie consumption. Theoretical and practical implications for the use of virtual environments to increase users’ health behavior were discussed.

  • The Human Element: Social Leveraging of User Engagement with Assisted
           Living Technology
    • Authors: Halloran J.
Abstract: AbstractResearch into user engagement with assisted living technology (ALT) has investigated design issues including usability, functionality and aesthetics; looked at user attitude and acceptance research; and examined social factors including the need to create ALT which appropriately supports the relationship between users and service providers. Based on an empirical case study of older persons’ independent living services offered by a large UK housing provider, we propose that there is a further, key dimension of ALT user engagement: social leveraging. We show how user engagement with key ALT including personal pendant alarms, pull cords and intercoms is shaped and supported in important ways by the ongoing social interaction of residents and skilled staff at independent living schemes. We discuss implications of social leveraging for reconsidering the importance of human resource as part of independent living services, during a time of transition to new technological models, and in light of current funding and organizational priorities.

  • Socially Augmented Music Discovery with Collaborative Playlists and Mood
           Pictures
    • Authors: Lehtiniemi A; Ojala J, Väänänen K.
Abstract: AbstractThis article describes the iterative design and user evaluation of a prototype, which enables collaborative music discovery by creating playlists and associating and expanding them with mood pictures. The concept was evaluated in two field trials by a total of 45 individual users, with both trials containing 30 users and 15 of the users attending both of the trials. The results from the two field trials are presented under three main themes: socially augmented music discovery, user-generated content enhancing music discovery and social usage patterns emerging from the usage of such a system. Users formed ways to facilitate social interaction and music discovery through the playlist content they shared. Social usage patterns reveal the social activities users performed with the service in the trials. The findings can be used as design implications for mood-based music service designers.

  • An Autoethnographic Approach to Guide Situated Ethical Decisions in
           Participatory Design with Teenagers
    • Authors: Malinverni L; Pares N.
Abstract: AbstractParticipatory Design (PD) methods have become a widespread practice in the development of digital technologies. Even if PD is grounded on a critical and reflective tradition, often the presence of implicit assumptions may have relevant methodological and ethical consequences, since they may unintentionally shape our way of considering or behaving with participants. To tackle this issue, we suggest that the assumptions and expectations of designers must be carefully examined. To guide this process, we propose using a self-reflexive critical practice based on autoethnography as a tool to reflect and construct knowledge out of our subjective experience of designers involved in PD. Grounded on our experience of PD with teenagers, we report how autoethnography allowed gaining a deeper understanding of one's own positions, assumptions and contradictions on aspects related to our standpoint on participatory practices, the images that we have of participants and our role in the design process. This awareness allowed taking into account emotions, personal stories and values in ethical choices, hence guiding situated decision-making on ethical and methodological aspects. Furthermore, we suggest that this approach not only contributes to unveil incongruences and strengthens the validity of the research, but also facilitates conditions for enabling a suitable space for creation and support novel forms of reporting PD experiences.

  • Context of Use: The Final Frontier in the Practice of User-Centered
           Design?
    • Authors: Eshet E; Bouwman H.
Abstract: AbstractUser-centered design (UCD) practitioners in industrial context are often faced with multilevel factors that hinder their effort to involve users in the context of use, and so meet one of the core UCD principles. Seen the heterogeneous and dynamic context of mobile system use, applying this principle becomes more challenging. Based on in-depth interviews with various mobile practitioners in Finland and the Netherlands, we explore the core factors that affect UCD practitioners in meeting this challenge. Our findings confirm the impact of the professional–client relationship as a key factor that inhibits the involvement of users. Novelty aspects, e.g. practitioners’ unfamiliarity with the users and the perceived innovativeness of the designed system, largely explain the involvement of users in situ. Interestingly, these conditions are not idiosyncratic to mobile computing. We discuss the contextual factors’ implications on UCD and emphasize alternative strategies that support practitioners in their effort to involve users.

  • Exploring Women's Everyday Mobile Phone Experiences in Nairobi, Kenya
    • Authors: Wyche S.
Abstract: AbstractThis article focuses on a range of Kenyan women, and their everyday experiences with mobile phones. We use our qualitative findings to broaden understanding of affordability, mobility and ease of use—design themes which underlie the motives for developing mobile phone applications in Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and Information and Communications Technology for Development (ICT4D). We find that studying women's routine interactions with their mobile devices is useful for re-examining these themes, and for discovering new ones, including the importance of trust within mobile communication and the emotional significance women attribute to mobile devices. We then discuss the practical implications of our research, and argue that technologists should develop interventions that target Kenyan women's everyday technology problems, rather than (as is traditional) focusing on interventions meant to improve their socioeconomic conditions. We also comment on the role of feminist theory in the design of these interventions.

  • Tapping Task Performance on Smartphones in Cold Temperature
    • Authors: Goncalves J; Sarsenbayeva Z, van Berkel N, et al.
Abstract: AbstractWe present a study that quantifies the effect of cold temperature on smartphone input performance, particularly on tapping tasks. Our results show that smartphone input performance decreases when completing tapping tasks in cold temperatures. We show that colder temperature is associated with lower throughput and less accurate performance when using the phone in both one-handed and two-handed operations. We also demonstrate that colder temperature is related to higher error rate when using the phone in one-handed operation only, but not two-handed. Finally, we identify a number of design recommendations from the literature that can be considered as a countermeasure to poorer smartphone input performance in completing tapping tasks in cold temperature.

  • Fly a Drone Safely: Evaluation of an Embodied Egocentric Drone Controller
           Interface
    • Authors: Cho K; Cho M, Jeon J.
Abstract: AbstractAs the activity of flying drones becomes increasingly widespread, drone accidents are also increasing. Many of these accidents are related to operational issues and, therefore, it is urgent to improve drone controls. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usability of a drone controller interface supporting an external pilot's egocentric perspective. The interface tried to solve the problem of misaligned perspectives that arise from controllers constructed from a drone-centric or allocentric perspective. To achieve this, two experiments were performed to identify the differences in control performance depending on embodied mental rotation. The results of the experiments revealed that the controller designed from the pilot's egocentric point of view had a stronger performance regardless of the direction of drone flight. Based on the results, implications are discussed.

  • Is It Still Where I Expect It?—Users’ Current Expectations of
Interface Elements on the Most Frequent Types of Websites
    • Authors: Heinz S; Linxen S, Tuch AN, et al.
Abstract: AbstractKnowing users’ expectations about what they expect on a website and where they expect to find it is crucial for the success of a website. For the last decade, technological advances have entailed major changes in website design but the impact of these changes on users’ mental representations of websites remains unclear. In an online study (N = 841), we asked users to sketch their prototypical version of an online shop, a news website and a company page, thereby indicating the interface elements they expect on the website and their expected location. We compared our results to those of a previous study to investigate changes in users’ mental representations of websites over time. This comparison suggests that interface elements such as the logo, main content and navigation area are still expected in the same location although others have shifted to the rich footer area at the bottom of the website. In addition, new elements such as links to social networks have been incorporated into users’ mental representations whereas other interface elements have disappeared. By providing updated consolidated blueprint models for all three website types, we help designers to create expectation-based websites. Further implications for research and practitioners are discussed.

  • User Experience in the Work Domain: A Longitudinal Field Study
    • Authors: Harbich S; Hassenzahl M.
Abstract: AbstractOf the many concepts of user experience (UX), only a few address UX in the work domain. In addition, while most underline the dynamic nature of UX, not many studies take an explicit longitudinal approach. This article presents data about how the UX of work-related interactive systems changed over the course of 13 weeks. Specifically, we studied the change in four groups of behaviors—execute, evolve, expand and engage—which we deem important for goal achievement. We examined the impact of user attributes (playfulness, computer expertise) as well as product attributes (pragmatic quality, hedonic quality). Multilevel analysis (MLA) provided the methodological frame for the statistical analysis. Since MLA is rather uncommon in human–computer interaction, we thoroughly discuss it and clarify its advantages over repeated-measures analysis of variance. Our study verified that time is an important predictor, confirming that UX (i.e. particular goal achievement-related behaviors and the perception of product attributes) changes over time. The pattern of change differed among participants in terms of rate and direction of change, and those differences even increased over the course of our study. Product attributes influenced change considerably, while playfulness had an impact on engaging behavior in the sense that more playful participants lost interest even faster.

  • Placing Location-Based Narratives in Context Through a Narrator and Visual
           Markers
    • Authors: Nisi V; Costanza E, Dionisio M.
Abstract: AbstractLocation-based services, narratives and interactive experiences have a substantial tradition in human–computer interaction. Building on this background, we report the iterative design process, prototyping and evaluation of Seven Stories, a location-based narrative experience. The design includes two novel features that aim to link the user experience more closely to its physical context: visual markers scanning and a narrator. We have evaluated Seven Stories with two studies. Study 1, with 12 participants, was conducted using qualitative methods to assess the overall user experience. Study 2, with 21 participants, was conducted using quantitative methods, to evaluate the role of the markers and narrator as specific design features. Our contribution is to illustrate, through both qualitative and quantitative findings, how these two novel features influence the user experience, and what implications they have for design.
