  • The Function and Future of the Folder
    • Authors: Whitham R; Cruickshank L.
      Pages: 629 - 647
Abstract: AbstractFolders are a commonplace metaphor in computing environments, constituting a link to physical work materials and are a key means for individuals to impose order on their digital work materials. This paper presents the findings of a novel qualitative study examining folder use by 12 information workers, using logging to accurately capture how folders were used in individual everyday work over 6 weeks, and challenging participants to work without using folders. Through observation and interviews, the study provides new descriptions of how folders are used and the dependence some study participants had on their folders to think and create, as well as to access files. The findings call into question whether search and recency-based lists of files could fulfil the functional role of folders, identified as key means for individuals to construct and specialize their work environments. Implications are discussed for document management tools, and more generally for operating system design.

  • Drawing Inspiration from World of Warcraft: Gamification Design Elements
           for Behavior Change Technologies
    • Authors: Rapp A.
      Pages: 648 - 678
Abstract: AbstractHuman–computer interaction (HCI) researchers are increasingly designing technologies for behavior change, drawing on different perspectives, theories and models. In recent years, a new approach has started to be explored within the HCI community: gamification is more and more used by researchers and designers to drive users’ behaviors toward specific directions. However, this design technique has showed several limits, especially for the choice of game elements to be employed. Drawing inspiration from the videogame world, this research wants to suggest the employment of game elements that could contribute and support behavior change processes in different settings. Looking at the Massively Multi Player Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) as a source of inspiration, an ethnographic study in World of Warcraft (WoW) has been conducted. We found that WoW is capable of driving its players’ behavior by employing incentives and penalties, as well as by providing social support and favoring mentorship. By creating a persistent world, supporting the recollection of players’ past memories, leveraging narratives and designing the time of play, WoW further affects players’ habits, increasing their retention in the game world. Findings from the fieldwork grounded the development of a set of design strategies that suggest how to use such elements in the design of interactive systems addressed to change users’ behaviors: for example, they recommend to design incentive systems that exploit different scheduling, as well as to create digital mementos to trigger positive memories that may support the change. Such strategies were then compared with game elements that can be found in other MMORPGs to allow for a greater generalization, and discussed with reference to HCI literature.

  • Reminiscence of People With Dementia Mediated by Multimedia Artifacts
    • Authors: Huldtgren A; Mertl F, Vormann A, et al.
      Pages: 679 - 696
Abstract: AbstractGiven the ongoing demographic changes in the world, there is not only a growing senior population, but also more people with dementia. Unfortunately, pharmaceutical interventions are limited. However, psychosocial interventions, e.g. reminiscence, are promising in improving the mood of people with dementia as well as the communication between them and their caregivers. At the same time, new possibilities to support reminiscence and communication of people with dementia are arising with advances in multimedia, sensor technologies and tangible computing. To date, the use of technology is not widespread in care practice and more research is needed to advance this. This research examines how tangible multimedia can be of added value in supporting reminiscence and communication for people with dementia and their caregivers and how to open up a dialog with caregivers about technical probes. Qualitative research using six experiential probes was conducted to explore different aspects of tangible interfaces and multimedia. The research participants were care professionals, IT experts and people with dementia. We conducted a number of interviews, field studies, focus groups and an expert workshop. We used qualitative content analysis and thematic analysis to identify themes from the data for each probe, which were consolidated into four design considerations for technologies supporting reminiscence of people with dementia. In addition, we reflect on the probe itself as a way to engage stakeholders in the design of new care technologies.

  • How We Talk About Interactivity: Modes and Meanings in HCI Research
    • Authors: Barry M; Doherty G.
      Pages: 697 - 714
Abstract: AbstractInteractivity is central to digital products, systems and experiences. It has long been studied from different disciplinary perspectives but while applications continue to be described as ‘more’ or ‘less’ interactive, there is a lack of consensus on its meaning. One approach to improving understanding is to focus on the different ways we talk about it rather than pursuing a single all-purpose definition. This study examines how interactivity is treated in a sample of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) research papers (N = 117). We use a combined content and discourse analysis approach to explore the range of definitions and technical configurations associated with the concept and unpick the wider discourses around it. We find it frequently described as a characteristic of technologies, an instrumental approach that suits quantitative measurement, but is acknowledged to miss other qualities. We also find qualitative user assessments that measure a spectrum of low to high interactivity, which are interpreted in different ways due to a lack of explicit definitions. The analysis reveals rich discursive material where different layered conceptions of interactivity arise, which we describe as ‘modes’ of interactivity. The dominant mode in HCI is ‘empowerment’, also found most frequently in public discourse. We offer modes of interactivity as a design and evaluation tool for more conscious consideration of this multidimensional concept.

  • Extending Value Sensitive Design to Off-the-Shelf Technology: Lessons
Learned from a Local Intercultural Computer Club
    • Authors: Weibert A; Randall D, Wulf V.
      Pages: 715 - 736
Abstract: AbstractStudying the setup and development of an initiative of computer clubs in intercultural neighborhoods, this paper builds on the theory and method associated with value sensitive design to account for the use of off-the-shelf technology in a diverse cultural context, and over an extended period of time. We present three cases from one of these computer clubs, each at a different point in time in the club's development. Central factors are identified that impact the course of a socio-technical initiative. We highlight the challenges inherent in matching existing ICT with the values both explicitly identified in the initiative and which evolve over time. Our study highlights the relevance of open communication structures among researchers and local practitioners, as well as methodological support that is needed to span a wide range of user experiences. Both aspects are key to making value sensitive design a lived experience on the diverse community level.

  • Cumulative Experience and Recent Behavior and their Relation to Content
           Quality on Wikipedia
    • Authors: Tsikerdekis M.
      Pages: 737 - 754
Abstract: AbstractCumulative experience is often seen as a major factor for influencing content quality in collaborative projects such as Wikipedia. However, past studies often utilize cumulative experience based on the quantity of work rather than quality and context. Moreover, the perspective on cumulative experience assumes a final destination for user behavior, whereas much of the literature indicates that user behavior changes over time. This paper aims to address these two factors by providing better descriptions and context to determine their effect on content quality. The study rematerialized these factors based on the quality of work and built a comprehensive model of how article quality materializes through groups of users. Regression models in this study indicate that recent behavior is a more powerful predictor of content quality change than cumulative experience. The implications of the findings impact the design of task-routing systems as well as designers and group managers’ work in collaborative projects.

  • A Novel Head Cursor Facilitation Technique for Cerebral Palsy: Functional
           and Clinical Implications
    • Authors: Velasco MA; Clemotte A, Raya R, et al.
      Pages: 755 - 766
Abstract: AbstractThis article evaluates the performance of individuals with cerebral palsy (CP) using an inertial human–computer interface (HCI) based on head movements and a novel facilitation algorithm which we named MouseField. In total, 17 participants from three centers specialized in CP participated in a series of tests that evaluated rapidity and accuracy in pointing tasks using a head mouse named ENLAZA, with and without MouseField. Cluster analysis was used to classify the participants into three categories, C1–C3 ordered by throughput. MouseField improved rapidity in C2 and C3 and accuracy in C3. Although the accuracy of the least impaired (C1, MACS IV–V) decreased, MouseField improved task performance of users with severe motor disorders (MACS V), with decrements of 33.3 and 65.5% in the task execution time. The results show that severely impaired individuals who cannot use traditional input devices could benefit from using MouseField and ENLAZA for a facilitated navigation that minimizes targeting errors.

  • Relationship Between Internet Addiction and Self-Esteem: Cross-Cultural
           Study in Portugal and Brazil
    • Authors: Seabra L; Loureiro M, Pereira H, et al.
      Pages: 767 - 778
Abstract: AbstractAs more people are connected to the Internet, researchers have been growingly concerned with Internet addiction and the psychological attributes connected to it. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between Internet addiction and self-esteem. The sample included 1399 Portuguese and Brazilian Internet users, from 14 to 83 years old, who responded to the Internet Addiction Test (IAT) (Young, K. (1998b) Caught in the Net: How to recognize the signs of Internet addiction and a winning strategy for recovery, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., New York) and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) (Rosenberg, M. (1989) Society and the adolescent self-image, Wesleyan University Press, Middle Town). A factor analysis of the IAT was conducted, revealing three factors: withdrawal & concealment, social & personal consequences, and excessive use. Using a Pearson correlation, we found a negative correlation between Internet addiction and self-esteem. Linear regression indicated that low self-esteem explained 11% of Internet addiction, and that negative feelings caused by Internet addiction (withdrawal & concealment) explained 13% of self-esteem. In the analysis of the IAT, we found that the groups exhibiting elevated levels of Internet addiction included men, Brazilians, and youths (14–25 years old).
