  • How do Perceived Enjoyment and Perceived Usefulness of a Software Product
Interact over Time to Impact Technology Acceptance'
    • Authors: Kumar Kakar A.
      Pages: 467 - 480
Abstract: Two recent meta-analyses of Technology Acceptance Model have come to different conclusions regarding the impacts of Perceived Usefulness (PU) and Perceived Enjoyment (PE) on Behavioral Intention (BI) of users of utilitarian software. While (Wu, J., and Lu, X. (2013) Effects of extrinsic and intrinsic motivators on using utilitarian, hedonic, and dual-purposed information systems: a meta-analysis. J. Assoc. Inf. Syst., 14) found PU to be more important than PE in the context of BI of users of utilitarian software, (Gerow, J. E., Ayyagari, R., Thatcher, J. B., and Roth, P. L. (2013). Can we have fun@ work' The role of intrinsic motivation for utilitarian systems. Eur. J. Inf. Syst., 22, 360–380) found both to be equally relevant. In this study, we hypothesize that the conflicting findings of both studies can be explained if we take in consideration the impact of systematic temporal variations in PU and PE, their interactional effects on BI and their differential impacts on BI due to users’ enduring personality factors. We test our hypotheses in a longitudinal study with actual users of two task planning applications. Round 2 (Time 2) of the longitudinal study was conducted 1 year after Round 1 (Time 1). The findings broadly support the proposed hypotheses and have useful implications for software product decisions on when and how much to focus on PE versus PU.

  • Undesirable Consequences and Social Contexts of Technology Use: A
           Micro-analysis of Embodied User Interaction
    • Authors: Jungmann M; Cox R.
      Pages: 481 - 493
Abstract: The focus of this paper is on the unexpected and undesirable consequences of social interaction with technological innovations, which we analyse with the support of two frameworks to better comprehend their social implications. The first, techno-social framework, consists of Allenby and Sarewitz's taxonomy of technological social function. In the second, cognitive, framework, we introduce concepts from dual-systems theory. The frameworks provide a lens through which to view techno-cultural examples. This sets the stage for our case study in which we investigate an interactive game installation. Using data analytics, we uncover hidden effects due to the social interactions between the players and to their physical attributes. We conclude that there is a pressing need for innovators to broaden the scope of their evaluations to not just evaluate innovative technologies at the initial engineering/design phase but also to conduct evaluations at later phases of adoption and appropriation that focus on social contexts-of-use.

  • Who Controls Who' Embodied Control Within Human–Technology
           Choreographies †
    • Authors: Tuuri K; Parviainen J, Pirhonen A.
      Pages: 494 - 511
Abstract: In this paper, we explore issues of embodied control that relate to current and future technologies in which body movements function as an instrument of control. Instead of just seeing ourselves in control, it is time to consider how these technologies actually control our moving bodies and transform our lived spaces. By shifting the focus from devices to choreographies among devices, we perform a theoretical analysis of the multidimensional aspects that reside within embodied interaction with technology. We suggest that it is beneficial to acknowledge and reformulate the phenomena of embodied control that go beyond the instrumental user-to-device control scheme. Drawing upon the phenomenology of the body, ecological psychology and embodied cognitive science, we identify three different dimensions of embodied control: instrumental, experiential and infrastructural. Design implications of this theoretical model are also discussed.

Abstract: Computing has become an established part of the built environment augmenting it to become adaptive. We generally assume that we control the adaptive environments we inhabit. Using an existing adaptive environment prototype, we conducted a controlled study testing how the reversal of control (where the environment attempts to influence the behaviour of the inhabitant) would affect participants. Most participants changed their respiratory behaviour in accordance with this environmental manipulation. Behavioural change occurred either consciously or unconsciously. We explain the two different paths leading participants to behavioural change: (i) we adapt the model of interbodily resonance, a process of bodily interaction observable between, for example, partners engaged in verbal dialogue, to describe the unconscious bodily response to subtle changes in the environment and (ii) we apply the model of secondary control, an adjustment of one's own expectations to maintain the pretence of control, to describe conscious cognitive adaptation to the changing environment. We also discuss potential applications of our findings in therapeutic and other settings.

  • MyWebSteps: Aiding Revisiting with a Visual Web History
    • Authors: Do TV; Ruddle RA.
      Pages: 530 - 551
Abstract: This research addresses the general topic of ‘keeping found things found’ by investigating difficulties people encounter when revisiting webpages, and designing and evaluating a novel tool that addresses those difficulties. The research focused on occasional revisits—webpages that people have previously visited on only one day, a week or more ago (i.e. neither frequently nor recently). A 3-month logging study was combined with a laboratory experiment to identify 10 underlying causes of participants’ revisiting failure. Overall, 61% of the failures occurred when a webpage had originally been accessed via search results, was on a topic a participant often looked at or was on a known but large website. Then, we designed a novel visual Web history tool to address the causes of failure and implemented it as a Firefox add-on. The tool was evaluated in a 3-month field study, helped participants succeed on 96% of revisits, and was also used by some participants to review and reminisce about their ‘travels’ online. Revised versions of the tool have been publicly released as the Firefox add-on MyWebSteps.

  • The Kinematic Theory Produces Human-Like Stroke Gestures
    • Authors: Leiva L; Martín-Albo D, Plamondon R.
      Pages: 552 - 565
Abstract: We show that the Kinematic Theory produces synthesized stroke gestures that ‘look and feel’ the same and hold the same statistical characteristics as human-generated gestures. Previous research in this vein has conducted such comparison from the classification accuracy performance, which is a legitimate though indirect measure. In this article, we synthesized two well-known public data sets comprising unistroke and multistroke gestures. We then compared geometric, kinematic and articulation aspects of human and synthetic gestures, and found no practical differences between both populations. We also conducted an online survey involving 236 participants and found that it is very difficult to tell human and synthetic gestures apart. We can finally be confident that synthesized gestures are actually reflective of how users produce stroke gestures. In sum, this work enables a deeper understanding of synthetic gestures’ production, which can inform the design of better gesture sets and development of more accurate recognizers.

  • Software Feature Life Cycles: Insights From a Value-Based Typology of
           Software Feature Innovation
    • Authors: Kakar A.
      Pages: 566 - 578
Abstract: Most software products developed for the market are in perpetual beta mode. Product managers are in a never-ending race to differentiate their products from competition by introducing new product features. However, feature innovations can be risky. Feature innovations that are transitory result in wasted development effort, delay in time-to-market, and increased complexity, maintenance and operational costs of the software product. In this multidisciplinary longitudinal study we propose a typology of feature innovation using the two types of value provided by a product feature innovation to the user—utilitarian and hedonic. This value-based typology integrates concepts from human–computer interactions, information systems and product development literatures. It was tested with actual users of a software product and the results supported the proposed typology. The typology has interesting applications for practice and future research including prediction of software feature life cycles and identification of durable feature innovations.

  • 3D Selection Techniques for Mobile Augmented Reality Head-Mounted Displays
    • Authors: Özacar K; Hincapié-Ramos J, Takashima K, et al.
      Pages: 579 - 591
Abstract: We conducted a user study evaluating five selection techniques for augmented reality in optical see-through head-mounted displays (OST-HMDs). The techniques we studied aim at supporting mobile usage scenarios where the devices do not need external tracking tools or special environments, and therefore we selected techniques that rely solely on tracking technologies built into conventional commercially available OST-HMDs [i.e. gesture trackers, gaze tracking and inertial measurement units (IMUs)]. While two techniques are based on raycasting using built-in IMU sensing, three techniques are based on a hand-controlled 3D cursor using gestural tracking. We compared these techniques in an experiment with 12 participants. Our results show that raycasting using head orientation (i.e. IMU on the headset) was the fastest, fatigueless and the most preferable technique to select spatially arranged objects. We discuss the implications of our findings for design of interaction techniques in mobile OST-HMDs.

  • Effectiveness of Multi-Parameter Compound Tactons for Navigating in a
           Virtual Urban Environment
    • Authors: Jia Z; Li J, Chen C.
      Pages: 592 - 604
Abstract: Tactile icons were proposed to convey non-visual information as an abstract approach. Perception of transformational Tactons has been explored, which encode two or more dimensions of information with various vibrotactile parameters. Unlike transformational Tactons, compound Tactons are a sequence of two or more one-element Tactons. However, little has been done on how to design compound Tactons to present non-visual information effectively. This article investigates mean recognition rates and information transfer values of compound Tactons that encode complex navigation information, and evaluates their effectiveness on assisting the participants to navigate in a virtual city. Results of the experiments indicate that overall identification rate for three-parameter Tactons is 92.7% by manipulating different vibrotactile parameters, and 88.7% for four-parameter Tactons by adding an extra thermal parameter; guided by these compound Tactons, all participants were able to reach destinations in the simple virtual urban environment. Therefore, compound tactile icons can be a potential way of conveying multidimensional information.

  • Exploring the Potential of GeoPass: A Geographic Location-Password Scheme
    • Authors: Al-Ameen M; Wright M.
      Pages: 605 - 627
Abstract: Password schemes based on online map locations are an emerging topic in authentication research. GeoPass is a promising such scheme, as it provides satisfactory resilience against online guessing and showed high memorability (97%) in a single-password laboratory study. In this article, we investigate more deeply into the potential of GeoPass through four separate studies. First, in a 2-month-long field study, we found that users in a real-world setting remembered their location passwords 96.1% of the time and showed improvement with more login sessions. Then, in a study of interference effects in Geopass, in which each participant had to remember four separate location passwords, we found that memorability was <70%, with 41.5% of login failures due to interference. Based on these findings, we propose to address interference issues in GeoPass with mental stories, where users are asked to create a meaningful association between their location password and the corresponding account. We tested the efficacy of this approach through a second interference study, where the memorability rate for GeoPass was >97%, with only 3.4% of login attempts failing due to interference. We also conducted a shoulder-surfing study to examine the resilience of GeoPass against this attack. Based on our results, we identify the promising aspects of location passwords that should be further studied in future research.
