  • Innovation, creative destruction, and price theory
    • Authors: Bloch H; Metcalfe S.
      Pages: 1 - 13
Abstract: Our purpose in this paper is to consider developments in price theory required to facilitate the evolutionary analysis of economic change. Evolution is always a matter of change and, although its driving force is innovation, the price mechanism is central to how innovations are resolved into economic development. That is Schumpeter’s great theme, but he said relatively little about who sets prices or how and why prices are changed. We focus particularly on price determination in markets disrupted by innovations, where firms are necessarily heterogeneous. We contrast the evolutionary paths followed by prices and market structure when prices are determined by market clearing to the paths when prices are determined through the application by firms of administered rules and routines to achieve their strategic objectives. This links the analysis to theories of administered prices and post-Keynesian price theories more broadly. Interaction of innovators with their customers and with established competitors create the context for the evolution of pricing rules along with differential firm growth, which together generates structural change in the industry and the economy. We show that analyzing how the introduction and diffusion of innovations impact on the rules and routines provides the foundation for a broadly applicable evolutionary price theory.

  • Resilience in the European Union: the effect of the 2008 crisis on the
ability of regions in Europe to develop new industrial specializations
    • Authors: Xiao J; Boschma R, Andersson M.
      Pages: 15 - 47
Abstract: This article adopts an evolutionary framework to the study of industrial resilience. We present a study on European regions and assess the extent to which the capacity of their economies to develop new industrial specializations is affected by the global economic crisis of 2008. We compare levels of industry entry in European regions in the period 2004–2008 and 2008–2012, i.e. before and after a major economic disturbance. Resilient regions are defined as regions that show high entry levels or even increase their entry levels after the shock. Related and unrelated variety exhibit a positive effect on regional resilience, especially on the entry of knowledge-intensive industries after the shock.

  • Dynamic capabilities and economic crises: has openness enhanced a firm's
           performance in an economic downturn'
    • Authors: Ahn J; Mortara L, Minshall T.
      Pages: 49 - 63
Abstract: Many studies have attempted to investigate the potential benefits of open innovation. However, the long-term effects of openness have yet to be demonstrated, even if few researchers hypothesized that high openness could increase firms’ dynamic capabilities and hence their resilience in the face of adversities, such economic downturns. Hence, this article attempts to investigate this dynamic relationship between openness and firm performance with particular considerations addressing the recent financial crisis in 2008. Based upon the UK Community Innovation Survey (CIS) panel data collected between 2006 and 2012, this study finds evidence that supports the positive influence of openness on long-term firm performance. The results show that (i) increasing a firm's openness is an effective way of enhancing its dynamic capability and hence its resilience, and (ii) of all the various configurations of openness, the collaboration with partners outside the firm's value chain and international partners has the highest impact on turnover recovery, as they will increase the chances of acquiring newer knowledge, which in turn will help firms to identify new opportunities to achieve sustainable growth. The findings of this article have some practical implications for managers and policymakers.

  • Technology change, economic feasibility, and creative destruction: the
case of new electronic products and services
    • Authors: Funk J.

Abstract: This article shows how new forms of electronic products and services become economically feasible and thus candidates for commercialization and creative destruction as improvements in standard electronic components such as microprocessors, memory, and displays occur. Unlike the predominant viewpoint in which commercialization is reached, as advances in science facilitate design changes that enable improvements in performance and cost, most new forms of electronic products and services are not invented in a scientific sense, and the cost and performance of them are primarily driven by improvements in standard components. They become candidates for commercialization, as the cost and performance of standard components reach the levels necessary for the final products and services to have the required levels of performance and cost. This suggests that when managers, policy makers, engineers, and entrepreneurs consider the choice and timing of commercializing new electronic products and services, they should understand the composition of new technologies, the impact of components on a technology’s cost, performance and design, and the rates of improvement in the components.

  • Vertical organization of production and firm growth
    • Authors: Pieri F.
      Pages: 83 - 106
Abstract: This paper empirically explores if different vertical organizational forms (i.e. vertical integration versus disintegration) give rise to unlike growth “behaviors” within the same industry. An econometric analysis is conducted in a sample of around 500 Italian machine tool (MT) builders for the period 1998–2007. Ceteris paribus, vertically integrated firms result to be characterized by a less dispersed distribution of growth rates than their disintegrated counterparts. By means of analyzing how different organizational forms map into the distribution of output growth rates, this work provides insight into the firm dynamics in a mature industry in which both vertically integrated and disintegrated firms coexist.

  • Innovation activities and learning processes in the crisis: evidence from
Italian export in manufacturing and services
    • Authors: Brancati R; Marrocu E, Romagnoli M, et al.
      Pages: 107 - 130
Abstract: Are there any factors driving firms’ internationalization process other than productivity' By means of a firm-level data set on manufacturing and production services sectors collected by MET, this article investigates the export performance of enterprises in Italy in the aftermath of the recent economic crisis. Our results suggest that productivity is not the only (and most important) determinant in this matter. Innovation activity and learning processes are indeed pivotal in boosting enterprises to sell their products abroad and, to a certain extent, in backing their success on foreign markets. In particular, by estimating dynamic probability models, as well as Tobit II-Heckman and two-part models, we provide evidence that firm’s ability to learn from its past export experiences lowers international trade informal barriers, while its ability to learn, thanks to local spillovers, is important in terms of both extensive and intensive performances on foreign markets.

  • Punctuated equilibrium or ambidexterity: dynamics of incremental and
           radical organizational change over time
    • Authors: Uotila J.
      Pages: 131 - 148
Abstract: Using formal simulation, I examine how environmental turbulence and complexity influence the temporal patterns of incremental and radical organizational change. In stable and simple environments, incremental change is found to be sufficient to keep pace with the task environment. Both turbulence and complexity are found to generate a punctuated equilibrium pattern but with different underlying mechanisms. When both turbulence and complexity are high, the punctuated equilibrium pattern is replaced by a dynamic type of ambidexterity. Implications for managing organizational change are discussed.

  • Export-led innovation: the role of export destinations
    • Authors: Fassio C.
      Pages: 149 - 171
Abstract: This article analyzes the effect of exporting activity on the innovative performances of firms in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and UK. It argues that the positive effect of exporting on innovation usually found in the literature varies according to the specific destinations of exports, and it identifies two dimensions along which export destinations might differ: the level of foreign technological spillovers available to exporting firms (the technological learning effect) and the type of foreign demand that exporting firms are able to access (the foreign demand effect). The empirical analysis, which takes advantage of firm-level information about the export destinations of exporters, shows that while the technological learning effect increases mainly the incentives to introduce brand new product innovations, the foreign demand effect fosters the adoption of process innovations.

  • Variation in the dynamics and performance of industrial innovation: what
can we learn from vaccines and HIV vaccines'
    • Authors: Yaqub O.
      Pages: 173 - 187
Abstract: This article examines contingencies and constraints in problem-solving processes underlying technological change and industry evolution. It shows how learning through practice can help drive technical change but, when this is impeded, the ability to make use of models and engage in experimental learning becomes even more pertinent for explaining variation in the rate and direction of technical change. The article explores HIV as an example of vaccine innovation, and vaccines as an example of medical innovation. I find the absence of these two variables (ability to learn directly in humans, and ability to learn vicariously through animal models) not only make up a large part of how I would characterize “difficulty” in the HIV R&D process, but they also seem to go a long way toward explaining why 33 other diseases have—or have not—had vaccines developed for them. Implications for theory and policy are discussed.

  • Geographic distance between venture capitalists and target firms and the
           value of quality signals
    • Authors: Kolympiris C; Hoenen S, Kalaitzandonakes N.
      Pages: 189 - 220
Abstract: In this paper, we examine whether the value of quality signals (patent activity and founding team characteristics) transmitted by emerging biotechnology firms is influenced by the geographic distance between venture capitalists and biotechnology firms. In line with the notion that signals are more valuable to receivers in environments of elevated information asymmetries and under the premise that long-distance transactions present such an environment, we empirically reveal that patent activity and founding team entrepreneurial experience are more effective in increasing venture capital investments when the distance between investors and investees is elevated. Our results, therefore, corroborate the rationale that because tacit knowledge circulates mostly within local circles, it diminishes the value of signals for local transactions, as a priori knowledge about potential target firms is more easily assessed by investors. Our study contributes to the literature on the factors that drive the value of signals, on the literature that studies the function of patents and other forms of intellectual property as a means to boost firm performance, and on the literature on the geography of venture capital investments.
