  • Race as Aesthetics' Denise Colomb in the Caribbean
    • Authors: Bishop C.
      Pages: 53 - 72
Abstract: This article examines the role of blackness in the work of the French photographer Denise Colomb, who travelled to the Caribbean in 1948 as part of a failed collaboration with Aimé Césaire and Michel Leiris. Her work has been criticized for its aestheticizing treatment of black subjects and its lack of political awareness. I contend that such interpretations naturalize race by treating it as an unproblematic visual fact, and fail to interrogate the historical connections between racialization and the photographic medium. Instead of treating it as a thematic content of the image, this article approaches race as a formal device, a set of visual relationships between surface and depth, as well as exterior and interior, that constitutes skin colour and phenotypical features as sites of subjective legibility. Colomb’s visual strategies, which bring together painterly references and post-war humanist photography, destabilize this racial legibility by opening a gap between colour and identity. The analysis of her work — and of its limits — leads to a reconsideration of the political role of photography and reveals that a closer engagement with the aesthetic dimension of the medium allows for alternative connections between physical difference, subjectivity, and identity.

  • French chanson
    • Authors: Haworth R.
      Pages: 87 - 96
Abstract: What is French chanson' In an article published by L’Express in March 2010, in anticipation of that year’s Victoires de la musique ceremony,11 the journalist Gilles Médioni addresses this question. His answer suggests there is more to chanson than just the broad idea of ‘words set to music’ that the term can sometimes signify:C’est à la fois des rimes riches, de la poésie musicale, une vision du monde. Et le champ des possibles est illimité.22His definition resonates with a broader, well-established discourse about chanson that is the product of media texts, critical commentaries, album reviews, music-industry material, and fan contributions. Taken as a whole, this discourse suggests that there is a more specific meaning to the term chanson than simply ‘popular song’ or ‘words set to music’, for it stresses that it is a particular genre with its own set of ‘rules’.33 It holds that chanson is a quality, crafted, and even artistic form of popular music; that it is a ‘literary genre, a form of poetry set to music, with claims for high-cultural status’; possesses ‘educational and enlightening qualities and [is] able to improve its audience, thus making art available to the masses’; that it represents the feelings and world view of its listeners through the persona of the singer-songwriter; and that it constitutes ‘a universal cultural product, appealing to all (within France at least)’.44 The elements of this discourse that can be seen in the extract from Médioni include: the reference to the genre as poetry; its ineffable richness; the particular world view it offers; its indefinable, immeasurable qualities suggested by Médioni's words ‘rien’ and ‘vent’; and the unexpected themes that it explores. The lack of further definition or more precise explanation of these ideas is also characteristic of the discourse, and points to the multiple meanings that the term chanson can embody.

  • The Spirit Moves: Mobility and Saintliness in the Old French Vie de Saint
           Alexis
    • Authors: Brown K.
      Pages: 1 - 16
Abstract: In the oldest versions of the Old French Vie de Saint Alexis, the saint’s renunciation of the profane takes the form of movement. Alexis’s flight from Rome and his return after seventeen years are the defining moments of this version of the Life in Old French, yet scholars have tended to focus on place as it reveals the holy identity of Alexis. This article contends that movement, defined as the absence of fixed place, indicates holiness throughout the text and that Alexis’s flight and return are the true markers of his progression towards perfection. Ultimately, this article posits that Alexis’s holiness in the oldest redactions is always an absence for the audience and movement is one metaphor by which this absence is expressed in the text. Similarly, the narrative movement in the text and the transmission of the tradition of the Life both undermine the centrality of place and reinforce the relationship between movement and holy revelation. In contrast to later, more popular redactions, the oldest witnesses of the Life in Old French present a more universalizing view of the saint and ultimately contribute to the formation of the hagiographic paradigm.

  • Sovereignty, Territory, and Population in Jean Bodin’s
           République
    • Authors: Miglietti S.
      Pages: 17 - 34
Abstract: This article offers a re-interpretation of Jean Bodin’s Six livres de la République (1576), a work that deeply transformed European political discourse at the time of the French Wars of Religion and that had important repercussions on the later ‘reason of state’ tradition. Highlighting the ties between Bodin’s definition of sovereignty in Book 1 and his discussion of demographic growth and territorial expansion in Books 4, 5, and 6, the article shows that Bodin’s critical contribution to early modern political thought, far from being limited to his reframing of the juristic concept of souveraineté or maiestas, extends to his novel understanding of the territory as a non-juridical ‘technologie politique’ (Michel Foucault). Through an examination of Bodin’s work and its later reception, the article argues that Bodin’s insights about territorial and demographic matters played a fundamental role in the early modern ‘territorialisation de la politique’ (Romain Descendre), in that they helped redefine the very terms in which the notion of territory would be understood and discussed in the following decades.

  • Myth, Dialogue, and Co-operation in the ‘Freedom Papers’: De Gaulle
           and Anglo-French Correspondence (1941–44)
    • Authors: Antonioli K; Cro M.
      Pages: 35 - 52
Abstract: This article performs a close reading of a newly discovered archive of letters to and from Charles de Gaulle, written between 1941 and 1944, to show how de Gaulle engaged in a process of auto-mythification. The archive features wartime correspondence between de Gaulle and various leaders of the British government, intelligence, and military, such as Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (1941) Anthony Eden, and Chief of the Imperial General Staff General Alan Brooke. The study illuminates the problematic nature of Anglo-French collaboration in terms of shifting cultural perspectives, particularly with regard to the notion of authority. Such notions are inevitably contested, and this collection of letters is an unusually effective resource to reconstruct the essentially dialogic aspects of this contestation. Through contextualization of the correspondence, including both contemporary and retrospective accounts of the war, the article enriches our understanding of the implicit and explicit conflicts between British and French forces and the rhetorical strategies utilized to further each writer’s aims.

  • Dumont, Bataille, and the Materialist Sacred
    • Authors: Webber I.
      Pages: 73 - 86
Abstract: While Bruno Dumont’s status as auteur cannot be denied, his work has generated intense polemic, even denunciation. One reason for this is the general perception that his actors do not correspond to the image of a film star. Recruited on location in French Flanders, they have included factory- or farm-workers, the chronically unemployed, and disabled people. Their bodies mirror their lives: worn, scarred, or deformed. Dumont’s choice of actors radically violates the sacrosanct codes of representation for film actors, which dictate an ideal beauty, an ideal often associated moreover with ideas such as purity, intelligence, or spiritual elevation. This association implicitly rejects the material, or un-ideal, body as impure, ugly, or evil. This article examines Dumont’s commercially risky, iconoclastic choice of actors and his insistence on the earthly body, rather than the immaterial spirit, as ‘the cause of everything’ in light of Georges Bataille’s concept of ‘bas matérialisme’ and its essential relation to the sacred. Flouting conventional codes of beauty, Dumont’s cinema locates the sacred, I argue, in the basse matière literally em-bodied by its actors and their natural habitats.

Abstract: Our distinguished friend and colleague Lucille Cairns, Professor of French at Durham University, passed away on 5 July 2017. Her premature death at the age of fifty-four is a tragic loss for her family and friends; it is also a big loss for the field of French studies to which she made major contributions since the early 1990s.

Abstract: Christopher Johnson, who died on 17 May 2017, made an early mark on UK French studies through his doctoral research on Derrida and his central involvement in the Modern Critical Theory Group and its journal Paragraph. Yet alongside his conceptual brilliance, it is equally for his significance as an intellectual historian that he will be remembered. Chris’s enviable familiarity with the internal disciplinary configuration of the human sciences in post-war France, and his interest in the parallel emergence of the exact sciences of molecular biology, systems theory, information theory, and cybernetics, led to significantly recontextualized accounts of the philosophy of Derrida, the structural anthropology of Lévi-Strauss, and the ethnology of the pre-historian Leroi-Gourhan. Taken as a whole, System and Writing in the Philosophy of Jacques Derrida (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1993), Derrida: The Scene of Writing (London: Phoenix, 1997), Claude Lévi-Strauss: The Formative Years (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2003), and the unfinished Language, Technology, Aesthetics: The Work of André Leroi-Gourhan constitute a coherent and powerfully original body of scholarship. It is underpinned by Chris’s long-standing fascination with the role of technology in the historical development and material mediation of systems of meaning.
