  • Contrast and contact: civilians in French trench newspapers of the Great
           War*
    • Authors: Stice E.
      Pages: 43 - 62
Abstract: AbstractThis article looks at representations of civilians in French trench newspapers of the Great War to examine soldiers’ discourses about the wartime relationship between soldiers and civilians. Trench newspapers demonstrate that contrasting experiences of the war created tension and soldiers were sometimes frustrated by civilians. However, poilus also longed for contact with civilians and communication with them helped to sustain their resolve. While some earlier scholarship has suggested that Great War soldiers were considerably alienated from civilians, these sources, alongside newer scholarship, suggest that there was more than animosity and alienation between soldiers and civilians, at least in the French case. Trench newspapers also suggest the importance of intended audience in considering war-related narratives and suggest distinctions about the relationship between soldiers and civilians in the French case.

    • Pages: 133 - 140
Abstract: The Society for the Study of French History (SSFH) supports postgraduate research by funding students to carry out archival research as well as helping them to attend and/or present work at conferences. These awards are open to all postgraduate students registered at a UK university who are carrying out research on an aspect of French history, and reports from successful applicants clearly indicate the tremendous range of research interests supported by the Society. The Society also supports conferences on French history as well as Visiting Scholars to UK and Irish Universities. In this edition we present five reports from postgraduate research grants and conference bursaries. The edition further includes details on the 2020 annual conference, and on recent and forthcoming books in the Studies in Modern French and Francophone History series with MUP, for which members of the SSFH are entitled to a 35% discount. More information on the postgraduate awards (and on the full range of bursaries and prizes offered by the SSFH) is available from the Society’s website: www.frenchhistorysociety.ac.uk.

  • The effects of commercial privileges in late medieval Bordeaux,
           1348–1449
    • Authors: Blackmore R.
      Pages: 1 - 21
Abstract: AbstractThis article examines the impact of a developed bourgeois legal status on late medieval Bordeaux’s wine market, between 1348—the year of the arrival of the Black Death—and 1449, shortly before the end of Plantagenet rule (in 1453). Through their control of the city’s powerful commune, the bourgeoisie acquired a portfolio of commercial advantages that distorted the export market in the interests of its members: a minority of influential townspeople, ecclesiastics—both individuals and institutions—as well as knights and secular lords allied to the English crown. Using considerable new quantitative evidence from Bordeaux’s customs books, this group is shown to have increased its exports at a time when trade was in decline, and—in turn—invested profits in the city’s hinterland, its suburbs and the wider Bordelais.

  • Policing printers and booksellers before and after 1789: a case study in
           Bordeaux
    • Authors: McLeod J; Girard R.
      Pages: 22 - 42
Abstract: AbstractThis article examines the Bordeaux bookseller and printer Arnaud-Antoine Pallandre’s two censorship trials in 1775 and 1790 to compare state–media relations during the late Bourbon monarchy and the French Revolution. An entourage of protectors kept Pallandre in business even though he flouted pre-revolutionary book trade legislation. After 1789, his printing and bookselling shop became a centre of pamphlet sales and counter-revolutionary gatherings that came under intense scrutiny by patriots in the clubs, the National Guard and the crowds, who pressured the municipal governments to end Pallandre’s trade in counter-revolutionary pamphlets. He eventually went to the guillotine in 1794. This article suggests that members of formerly privileged groups continued to wield considerable influence over printers and booksellers in France after 1789, making them objects of both government and popular censorship. In the struggle to achieve limits on a free press, printers and booksellers came to be regarded as individuals with public (potentially dangerous) political affiliations in a new way, a development that may help explain the high levels of media repression in the French Revolution.

  • Kinderreicher familien or familles nombreuses' French pronatalism in
           interwar Alsace
    • Authors: Andersen M.
      Pages: 63 - 81
Abstract: AbstractThis article explores the introduction of family policy in Alsace following the Great War and the efforts of local pronatalist leaders to create a new moral order in the region. While French goals of promoting population growth have been well documented at the national level, relatively little attention has been accorded to the unique way in which the demographic question developed outside Paris. The interwar period in France was marked by shifting boundaries and population movements across borders, both of which shaped French pronatalism. Because such developments factored into understandings of both French identity and concerns about population growth, French demographic policy cannot be fully understood without considering how these questions developed in regions such as Alsace. As this article shows, the introduction of a pronatalist family policy and moral crusade intersected with concurrent efforts to minimize German influences and make the region more ‘French’.

  • From international origins to transnational commemoration: the cemetery of
           the Gurs camp, 1939–1963
    • Authors: Soo S.
      Pages: 82 - 104
Abstract: AbstractWhile the origins, operation and experiences of the internment camps of the Third Republic and Vichy have been studied, little is known about how they were closed and transformed into sites of commemoration. Drawing from fresh archival material, this study demonstrates the complexity of closing the vast complex of Gurs whilst also questioning the extent to which this camp can be understood as a peripheral or forgotten site during the frequently overlooked period of the postwar decades. The analysis of French administrative correspondence not only reveals how the legacy of the camp generated a significant level of ‘administrative noise’, it also furthers understanding of how postwar narratives of the ‘dark years’ were constructed and buttressed by French officials. The failure of the latter to resolve the overlapping issues of responsibility and the maintenance of the camp cemetery underpins this article’s argument that the international origins of the deceased explain both the neglect of the burial ground and its eventual transformation into a transnational site of commemoration in the early 1960s.
