  • French Colonial Histories From Below
    • Authors: Eldridge C; Sessions J.
      Pages: 463 - 470
Abstract: In exploring ‘French colonial histories from below’, this special issue draws together the overlapping concerns of colonial historians and practitioners of history from below with the experiences, perspectives, and historical agency of groups subordinated by the dominant structures of capitalism and empire. ‘History from below’ has, of course, a distinguished tradition among historians of metropolitan France. Whether inspired by the British Marxists or the French Annales school, the desire to salvage the histories of the anonymous, often illiterate masses of French peasants, workers and menu peuple has given rise, since the late 1970s, to a rich and varied body of work that encompasses quantitative analyses of popular politics, reconstructions of working-class and peasant mentalités and microhistorical accounts of particular people or places.11 French historians interested in everything from daily life in a medieval Pyrénéen village to the crowd in the French Revolution have long embraced what Lucien Febvre (one of several scholars credited with coining the term) described in 1932 as ‘history viewed from below and not from on high’.22

  • The fruits of their labours: Race, gender and labour in the
           eighteenth-century French Caribbean
    • Authors: Palmer J.
      Pages: 471 - 492
Abstract: In the context of eighteenth-century Caribbean plantation society, women and people of colour often were viewed as property. Instances of free women claiming and holding onto property through their labour are thus all the more remarkable. Under the French Crown in Guadeloupe, race and gender shaped assumptions about who could exercise ownership. Yet the conjunction of these sometimes contradictory identities also opened up windows of opportunity for women of colour as landowners. A close focus on a court case brought by two free women of colour named Nanon and Artois reveals that ownership could be asserted and contested in multiple ways beyond the regulatory reach of the state, even in the context of emerging global capitalism. These opportunities were shut down as ownership increasingly became the purview of white men.

  • The ‘Ambroise Affair’: White women, black men, and the limits of
           métissage in revolution-era réunion
    • Authors: Marvin N.
      Pages: 493 - 510
Abstract: On the Indian Ocean colony of Bourbon Island (Réunion), a 1793 scandal involving a sexual liaison between a white woman and a black man raised concerns among colonial officials. Cross-racial intimacies were a pervasive feature of eighteenth-century Bourbon society. Throughout the eighteenth century, colonial officials tolerated marriages between white men and women of colour and the assimilation of the children of such unions as legally white, even while slave societies elsewhere in the French Empire were moving towards a ‘one-drop’ rule of exclusion from whiteness. But gender sharply circumscribed the acceptable forms of métissage (miscegenation) on Bourbon. Sexual liaisons between white women and black men threatened a social order that relied on the patrilineal transfer of family names, property and of white status itself. The ‘Ambroise Affair’ demonstrates how such gendered restrictions grew tighter in the tumultuous era of the French and Haitian Revolutions.

  • The last resort of the slave: Fire and labour in the late
           nineteenth-century French Caribbean
    • Authors: Church C.
      Pages: 511 - 531
Abstract: Whether by accident or by will, the French Caribbean repeatedly erupted into flames at the end of the nineteenth century, leading Guadeloupe’s governor to recall ‘when the torch was the only instrument of vengeance left to the slave’. This article critically juxtaposes colonial officials’ accusations of incendiarism against labourers’ everyday use of fire and the commonplaceness of accidents and natural catastrophes. Providing an environmental ‘history from below’, it demonstrates how a fundamental continuity in the use, knowledge and political power of fire bridged the slaves’ transformation into wage labourers during the nineteenth century. Reading against the grain of official sources to describe the social and political world of the Antillean labourer, this article explains how labour unrest and the subsequent governmental response uncovered islanders’ liminal status as workers demanding, like their white metropolitan counterparts, a liveable wage, and also as former slaves labouring under the thumb of an exploitative economic regime forged during the age of slavery and haunted by fire, the perennial ecological hazard and weapon of the disenfranchised in the Caribbean.

  • Experiencing colonial violence from below: French and Amazigh entanglement
           during the conquest of Morocco
    • Authors: Campbell C.
      Pages: 532 - 553
Abstract: While much of the literature on settler colonialism, mass violence and genocide focuses on the anglophone world and is increasingly well developed, scholarly work on the role of these violent processes in France’s huge empire is in its beginnings. Indeed, only in the case of Algeria are historians debating whether the brutal violence and destruction that took place during its military conquest from 1830–70 constitutes genocide, even though the French military applied similar ideas and methods throughout the empire. In Algeria and elsewhere, the military engaged in constructing hierarchies of ethno-religious difference and deploying violent tactics such as the razzia to inflict massive political and cultural destruction on indigenous communities. This article focuses on a case of twentieth-century conquest, that of Morocco, and analyses how people on the ground experienced the violence and understood its horrors.

  • Resistance and exclusion in matsouanist narratives of decolonization in
           French Congo
    • Authors: De Goede M.
      Pages: 554 - 572
Abstract: The decolonization of French Equatorial Africa (AEF) has long been viewed as a smooth and peaceful process. However, this master narrative may be challenged be examining the history of decolonization of a small religious minority in Congo-Brazzaville, the Matsouanists. This article will revisit the process of decolonization in Congo as experienced by the Matsouanists. It is a perspective from the margins through which a different reality of decolonization in Congo can be seen—one of violence and exclusion. This piece will argue that Matsouanist representations of decolonization give historical validation to their feelings of victimhood and social exclusion. The research therefore engages with the broader, and urgent, problem of the politics of remembering and forgetting in Congo, and the impact thereof on social division in present-day Congo.

  • Beyond memory wars: The indigènes de la république’s grass-roots
anti-racism between the memory of colonialism and antisemitism
    • Authors: Lotem I.
      Pages: 573 - 593
Abstract: In the mid-2010s, the expression ‘memory wars’, which had been coined in debates about the role of various commemorations of France’s colonial history, became increasingly identified with an atmosphere of conflict between France’s Jewish population and other minority communities. Simultaneously, conflicts over remembrance of the Holocaust and France’s colonial past characterized a new dynamic of memorial anti-racism. This article examines the trajectory of the Indigènes de la République, an organization that was particularly identified with this kind of memorial anti-racism. Through oral history interviews as well as the organization’s publications and media appearances, this article outlines the role of memory in the growing atmosphere of conflict between Jews and other postcolonial minorities in France and ultimately questions the role of so-called memory wars in the growing conversation about race in the Fifth Republic.

    • Pages: 619 - 626
Abstract: The Society for the Study of French History (SSFH) supports postgraduate research by funding students to carry out archival research as well as helping them to attend and/or present work at conferences. These awards are open to all postgraduate students registered at a UK university who are carrying out research on an aspect of French history, and reports from successful applicants clearly indicate the tremendous range of research interests supported by the Society. The Society also supports conferences on French history as well as Visiting Scholars to UK and Irish Universities. In this edition we present two reports from Ralph Gibson Bursaries — which support PhD students in their fourth year — as well as reports from Conference and Visiting Scholar Grants. The edition also includes details on recent and forthcoming books in the Studies in French History series with MUP, for which members of the SSFH are entitled to a 35% discount. More information on the postgraduate awards (and on the full range of bursaries and prizes offered by the SSFH) is available from the Society’s website: www.frenchhistorysociety.ac.uk.
