  • The Reception of Wilhelm von Humboldt’s Linguistic Writings in the
           Anglosphere, 1820 to the Present
    • Authors: ; Joseph JE.
Abstract: ABSTRACTHumboldt has had a complex reception in the English-speaking world. The thesis-antithesis-synthesis rhetorical structure he inherited from Fichte has contributed to misunderstanding of his views. In the later nineteenth century he was depicted as an evolutionist, including by his prominent American disciple Brinton. His thought helped to shape twentieth-century anthropology in the USA through the work of Boas, who, however, cited him only once, and it had an impact on the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, though how much of one is debated. If Noam Chomsky’s claim to be his intellectual heir is dubious, Humboldt’s shadow looms over current work on embodied language, and is central to Taylor’s (2016) attempt to redirect the Anglophone philosophical tradition towards a conception of man as ‘the language animal’.

  • Humboldt, Translation and the Dictionary of Untranslatables
    • Authors: ; Cassin B.
Abstract: ABSTRACTThis article analyses the importance of Humboldtian theory of language and linguistic diversity, of translation and a plurality of good translations – a pantheon, not a church – for the aims and method of the collective work Dictionary of Untranslatables. A Philosophical Lexicon (2014, French original 2004). It focuses on the presentation of Aeschylus’ Agamemnon, which Humboldt describes as ‘untranslatable’ while translating it, and relies on the notion of energeia, the importance of which is also underlined by Heidegger. The article argues that philosophy has to become aware that it takes place not in concepts, but in words. These words, however, are different in different languages. That has huge implications for thinking and for philosophy, and these have to be considered by philosophers.

  • Wilhelm von Humboldt’s Critique of a Hegelian Understanding of
Modernity. A Contribution to the Debate on (Post)Colonialism
    • Authors: ; Messling M.
Abstract: ABSTRACTSince Edward W. Said’s Orientalism, many polemics on the role of European philologies in cultural reflection have emerged. A point missed so far in this debate is the historical fact that imperial universalism had entered a crisis already shortly after the French Revolution, and not only in the Romantic rejection of its French variant. Alongside this existed attempts to mediate between the force of the universal legal claim and the diversity of the world. Both G. W. F. Hegel and Wilhelm von Humboldt clearly represent this position, but while Hegel unsentimentally observes the disappearance of non-European languages and cultures in historical progress, Humboldt lucidly foresees the danger of a monotonization of the world, and tries to establish a dialogical approach which does not neutralize the ‘other’ as always also the same. This is where the possibility of thinking a more diverse modernity finds its historical depth.

  • Humboldt in Translation Theory: Pearls of Wisdom, or Splashes in the
           Ocean?
    • Authors: ; Underhill JW.
Abstract: ABSTRACTExactly 200 years after its first publication, Humboldt’s Preface to his translation of Aeschylus’ Agamemnon still appears to have something to say to a vast range of authors from George Steiner to Henri Meschonnic and Antoine Berman. Humboldt’s insight into the adventure of translating forces us to face up to something fundamental about creative expression and our relation to other cultures. From Schleiermacher to Steiner, and from Mona Baker to Lawrence Venuti, what exactly has Humboldt’s conception of language and translation to contribute to Translation Studies today? References to a ‘Humboldtian tradition’ will be read alongside Humboldt’s own Preface to his translation of Aeschylus’ Agamemnon (1816) to answer this question.

  • Vanishing Worldviews
    • Authors: ; Trabant J.
Abstract: ABSTRACTIn Humboldt’s philosophy, language is the ‘formative organ of thought’, its function primarily cognitive. The formation of thought is a common activity of ‘I and Thou’. The languages thus produced contain different worldviews. This conception of languages as precious creations of the human mind contrasts with the fatal conception of languages as arbitrary communicative devices. The quasi-Humboldtian appreciation of its languages by the European Union collides with the activities of politicians for a globalized linguistic regime and the massive propaganda of social scientists for a global monolingual situation. The political task of the future, inspired by Humboldt’s philosophy of language, will be to work for a coexistence of the languages of the world with the invasive Global Language.

  • Collecting Language Data: From Humboldt to the Language Archive
    • Authors: ; Tintemann U.
Abstract: ABSTRACTBefore Humboldt, surveys on the languages of the world focused mostly on genealogical questions. Humboldt added a new dimension, pursuing the study and comparison of languages as manifestations of the richness of the human mind. He based his own language studies on pre-existing language data, mainly on eighteenth-century grammars and dictionaries. The first part of this paper will discuss Humboldt’s collections of grammars and dictionaries of the native languages of the Americas, written mostly by missionaries, as well as his reviews of these sources. In the second part, I will consider how language endangerment has now become a major concern and motivation for linguistics (faith-based or otherwise) to collect and publish language data on lesser-known languages.

  • Wilhelm von Humboldt and Dialogical Thinking
    • Authors: ; Walker J.
Abstract: ABSTRACTThe dialogical principle is central not just to Humboldt’s theory of language but also to his philosophical anthropology, and it has a direct political relevance. Dialogue is intrinsic to the realization of human subjectivity in a diverse community of free individuals. Language involves two constitutive principles: the inner linguistic sense (‘innerer Sprachsinn’) and objective sound (‘der Laut’); individual self-expression has meaning only when it is reflected back in the voice of another. The diversity (‘Verschiedenheit’) of languages and their comparative study is not just essential to our understanding of our own languages as well as those of others; it is intrinsic to the nature of language as such. Translation is thus a privileged route to cultural as well as linguistic communication.

  • Humboldt’s ‘Thinking Language’: Poetics and Politics
    • Authors: ; PajeviĆ M.
Abstract: ABSTRACTThe thesis I develop in this article, based on the Humboldtian tradition of Sprachdenken [thinking language], is that language is a paradigm for our ideas on the way communal life functions. If that is the case, our theory of language is of utmost political importance. Poetics becomes political. Wilhelm von Humboldt’s reflections on the dual offer a vision of politics which is based on dialogical thinking and hence on a form of community which allows for individual freedom. This is demonstrated and elaborated throughout his work, embedding the political dimension of Sprachdenken in his anthropology of language, which even offers the beginnings of a poetological anthropology.

  • Thinking Language: Wilhelm von Humboldt Now Introduction
    • Authors: ; PajeviĆ M.
Abstract: It was almost 200 years ago that Wilhelm von Humboldt developed his ideas about what language is and does; since then, the dominant linguistic movements of the Anglophone world have given little consideration to his writings. Even though his work is often referred to on a superficial level, the reception of his writings in the Anglophone world is at best partial and certainly problematic. There is, however, good reason to believe that his time is yet to come. The present Special Issue wishes to point in this direction and demonstrate the significance, and timeliness, of his thinking.
