  • West Germany’s neue Frauenbewegung and the Productive Potential of
           Feminist ( Gegen)gewalt
    • Authors: Bielby C.
      Pages: 379 - 404
Abstract: This article explores the feminist potential of (Gegen)gewalt ((counter-) violence) during the founding years of West Germany’s neue Frauenbewegung: firstly, as a discourse and practice which helped create the discursive space to start imagining feminist identity in the late 1960s, when, it has been argued, no such identity existed; secondly, as a militant practice in the early 1970s, through which women were able to change their gendered behavioural scripts in positive feminist ways; finally, as feminist self-defence, understood as enabling women to continue to imagine an active subject position in the mid-1970s, when women as the victims of patriarchal violence had become the predominant idea of the movement. Reading feminist flyers, publications and other documents of the period, as well as more recently published accounts of the movement, alongside the wider discourse on (Gegen)gewalt of the 1960s and 1970s, I trace a cultural history of feminist (Gegen)gewalt.

  • The Heart of the Metropole: Urban Space and Interracial Relationships in
‘Fidelidade’ by Vimala Devi, ‘Um encontro imprevisto’ by Henrique
de Senna Fernandes and ‘Nina’ by Orlanda Amarílis
    • Authors: Melo e Castro P.
      Pages: 405 - 429
Abstract: This article looks at the Lisbon-set stories ‘Fidelidade’ by Vimala Devi, ‘Um encontro imprevisto’ by Henrique de Senna Fernandes, and ‘Nina’ by Orlanda Amarílis, all of which dramatize a dead-end relationship between a colonized man and a metropolitan woman in the final years of Portuguese colonialism. It analyses how these narratives use the resources of the short story to challenge the colonial discourse of Lusotropicalism, dominant in Portugal in the years following the Second World War. Via the spatial and interpersonal deixis of their ‘intermediate elite’ protagonists, these narratives inscribe the experience of colonized subjects on the margins of the imperial capital and reflect on the dynamics of identity in their home territories. The article concludes by arguing for a broad comparative practice that can bring a much-needed perspectivism to key issues in postcolonial studies in Portuguese and animate neglected parts of the worldwide Portuguese-language literary archive.

  • Reporting the Fantastic: Deferral and Pan-determinism in Ugo Tarchetti
    • Authors: Reza M.
      Pages: 430 - 443
Abstract: This article explores how Ugo Tarchetti balances the fantastic and the real in his narratives through explicit real-world location together with a deferral of the impossible. I argue that Tarchetti allows the fantastic and the real to coexist by enclosing the fantastic with reassuring markers, deferring its authenticity to lost manuscripts, or by allowing the narrator simply to claim to be passing on a story. Additionally, I make the case that Tarchetti’s use of pan-determinism complements this effect, and that as well as balancing the real with the fantastic, he is also representing the new social reality of the rise of practices such as spiritualism in late nineteenth-century Italy.

  • Kate O’Brien’s Farewell Spain : Spain and the Spanish Civil War as
Explained to an English Readership by an Irishwoman
    • Authors: Ruiz Mas J.
      Pages: 444 - 462
Abstract: Kate O’Brien’s Farewell Spain (1937) is a ‘nostalgic’ travel book set during the Second Republic (1931–36) and the Spanish Civil War (1936–39), based on her ten-month stay in the Basque Country in the 1920s and on her pre-war journeys in central and northern Spain in the 1930s. The author, who seems to have sympathized with the Spanish Anarchists, took sides with the legally-constituted Republic and did not disguise her opposition to the Spanish 1936 military uprising or her ideological disagreement with Communism. This did not prevent her from also using an overtly anglocentric didactic approach when trying to ‘explain’ Spain as she recalled it from previous journeys. In Farewell Spain, O’Brien pays special attention to describing Spanish issues which she believed would be of interest to the English reader. Her impressions, opinions, memories and descriptions of Spain before the Civil War as well as of the war itself are constantly contrasted and compared not only with British culture, history and literature, in an evident attempt to cater to an English readership, but also with her Irishness, of which she felt proud.

  • Writing the Ineffable: Postwar Female Employment and Domestic Violence in
           Carmen Laforet’s Nada
    • Authors: Ryan L.
      Pages: 463 - 482
Abstract: This article considers the unexplored and interrelated motifs of female employment and domestic violence in Carmen Laforet’s 1945 novel, Nada. The voyeuristic gaze of the main protagonist, Andrea, renders an intimate and sustained portrait of the inversion of gender roles in a postwar marriage in which the wife, Gloria, is the breadwinner and the husband, Juan, is both traumatized and poverty-stricken. My analysis is three-fold, centring primarily on Juan’s inadequate masculinity, Gloria’s economic power and her forms of resistance. My article reconceives Laforet’s treatment of gender by illuminating the under-studied categories of the traumatized male and the working woman in the postwar period. This article will also consider Laforet’s investment in this reconstruction of postwar gender archetypes, seeking to ascertain whether the representation of Gloria and Juan is a critical response to, and undoing of, prejudicial social and gendered practices, or whether remnants of those very same biases underlie this representation.

  • The Predatory Economics of Imperialism and Neo-Imperialism: Some Post-War
           Metropolitan French Intellectual Perspectives
    • Authors: Yillah D.
      Pages: 483 - 507
Abstract: This article examines the issue of economic predation in a selection of mainstream metropolitan French writings on black Africa produced between 1945 and the present. It begins with the writer Gide and the critic and philosopher Sartre, some of whose works on black Africa belong to the first decade after the Second World War, which was marked by France’s continued imperial presence in the continent. It then considers the agronomist Dumont, the sociologist Negroni, the economist and human rights activist Verschave, and the novelists Le Clézio and Constant, whose books appeared in the following decades, which saw the official dissolution of empire and the emergence of a politically independent Africa. The aim is to analyse closely how these scholars and writers call into question the economic realities of France’s expansionist policy in black Africa. My claim is that, read as a unit, their texts constitute an act of European self-confession. These essays provide the intellectual basis, within their narrower, specialized frameworks, of an uncompromising denunciatory stance on the economic crimes of imperialism and neo-imperialism, which the novels echo in their much broader, imaginative domain.
