  • Literary Communities in the Late Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries:
           Space, Place and Identity Introduction
    • Authors: Bullock P; Evangelista S, Stedman G.
      Pages: 271 - 273
Abstract: Thisspecial issue ofForum for Modern Language Studies presents a series of articles by members of Writing 1900, an international network of literary scholars and cultural historians united by a common interest in comparative and transnational approaches to the writing of literary history in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.11 The members of the group take it as axiomatic that the decades between 1870 and 1930 constitute an era when an increase in cross-national literary traffic coincides with redefinitions of concepts of nationhood and political and economic power, both within Europe and on a global scale. The articles presented here investigate the shifting forms of literary culture in this age of transition from a number of cross-disciplinary and transnational perspectives. Their authors examine what happens to writers, works, ideas and artistic movements when they migrate across national and linguistic borders; they argue that national canons cannot be understood without reference to ideas of internationalism and cosmopolitanism; they explore how the meaning and value of literature are affected by patterns of cultural migration and exchange; and they foreground the particular geographical locations and cultural venues in which such exchange occurs. Approaching literature from a transnational perspective lays bare the ideological foundations and taxonomical fallacies that underlie ideas of ‘national’ literatures, which continue to shape the institutions of literary studies around the world.

  • Reading Clubs, Language Societies and Female Education in
           Fin-de-Siècle Copenhagen
    • Authors: Østermark-Johansen L.
      Pages: 274 - 290
Abstract: AbstractCopenhagen became increasingly cosmopolitan at the end of the nineteenth century, as foreign artists and academics settled in the city, and Georg Brandes’s lectures on ‘The Modern Breakthrough’ introduced the literatures of France and England to Danish readers. This essay examines the role played by women’s reading clubs, language societies and literary magazines in the dissemination of literature in foreign languages to a Copenhagen audience. The founding of international language societies and private libraries took place alongside the establishment of art schools for women. With their long opening hours, the reading clubs became popular alternatives to the domestic sphere, and their aesthetic interiors became exhibition spaces where the newly educated female artists could display their works to the Copenhagen bourgeoisie. My essay examines these physical and literary cosmopolitan spaces with a view to unveiling the increasing internationalism among middle- and lower middle-class women in the Danish capital at the fin de siècle.

  • Du CôtÉ de Dieppe: Jacques-Émile Blanche and the ‘Not Quite
           Conventional’ English
    • Authors: Eells E.
      Pages: 291 - 302
Abstract: AbstractThis paper reflects on Dieppe’s place on the map of Anglo-French cultural exchange in the fin-de-siècle period, examining its strategic position between London and Paris. The title points to the central role Jacques-Émile Blanche played in Dieppe’s international artistic circle and hints at Marcel Proust’s formative presence there. Arthur Symons’s phrase, the ‘not quite conventional’ English, alludes to such artists as Walter Sickert and Oscar Wilde who found refuge in the French port. This piece explores various types of space within the town which fostered artistic production, most notably the café where The Savoy periodical was founded and the arcades on the port which create a sense of liminality. Dieppe was home to art of all kinds, from Aubrey Beardsley’s caricatures to posters advertising the railway linking the English and French capitals.

  • Transnational Modernist Encounters in the Provinces: Lacerba , Mina Loy
and International Debates on Sexual Morality in Florence
    • Authors: Scuriatti L.
      Pages: 303 - 313
Abstract: AbstractThis article explores the complex encounters between Florentine, Italian and Anglo-American modernism and feminism as they emerged in the journals and magazines published in Florence, examining, as a case study, a series of texts written by the British-born poet and painter Mina Loy during her stay in the city. The analysis of the dialogue between the avant-garde journal Lacerba, Loy and the coterie gathered around the American heiress Mabel Dodge on the topics of sexuality, female emancipation and sexual morality presents a complex picture of cultural exchange and encounters, in which Florence emerges as an important modernist nexus. By providing an account of such exchanges, the article also aims to contribute to a decentring and provincialization of modernism.

  • The Remaking of Rome: Cosmopolitanism and Literary Modernity in Gabriele
           D’Annunzio’s The Child of Pleasure
    • Authors: Evangelista S.
      Pages: 314 - 324
Abstract: AbstractFrom the early nineteenth century onwards, the city of Rome provided both an actual and a novelistic setting for European debates about literary and artistic cosmopolitanism. After Italian unification, Italian writers inherited this tradition, while at the same time attempting to reclaim Rome as a setting for a modern Italian (i.e. national) literature. Gabriele D’Annunzio’s novel Il piacere (1889) was the only one of these attempts to achieve a truly international reputation. D’Annunzio adopted the cosmopolitan perspective on Rome used by foreign writers, imitating their techniques, in order to present modern Italian literature as part of an international economy of borrowing and exchange, an equal of the literatures of more established European nations such as France and Britain. In this process, he twisted the geography and social fabric of the city to suit his artistic aims, rewriting Rome as the space for an internationally-oriented Italian modernity.

  • Cosmopolitan Disturbances: Amy Levy in Dresden
    • Authors: Parejo Vadillo A.
      Pages: 325 - 337
Abstract: AbstractThis essay discusses Amy Levy’s vision of cosmopolitanism. It focuses on her trip to Dresden in 1881–82 and argues that the crux of her trip was the juxtaposition of Dresden as a liberating cosmopolitan space with her disturbing experience of the city in the context of antisemitism which, in the political discourse of the period, was framed within an anti-cosmopolitan, nationalist ideology. The essay traces how Levy’s writings (Medea, Reuben Sachs and A London Plane-Tree) were shaped by the trip, as she experienced the cosmopolitan as two distinctly opposing forces: one progressive and liberating, the other oppressive and destructive.

  • ‘AN habituée of the Romanisches Café’: Alix
           Strachey’s 1920 s Berlin
    • Authors: Stedman G.
      Pages: 338 - 348
Abstract: AbstractThis article undertakes a culture-exchange-studies analysis of an exchange of letters between Alix and James Strachey, written between 1924 and 1925 during Alix Strachey’s stay in Berlin. The city emerges as both a private and a public space, and the letters provide a unique view of Berlin from a female perspective which in many respects differs from what other members of the Bloomsbury Group had to say about Berlin.

  • Bruges as Symbolic Capital
    • Authors: Hibbitt R.
      Pages: 349 - 359
Abstract: AbstractThis article proposes a new reading of the relationship between place and symbolic capital, arguing that certain loci are able to consecrate literary works through inspiration rather than reception, publication and circulation. Taking the city of Bruges as an exemplar, it examines its representation by Baudelaire, Rodenbach and Rilke, arguing that Rilke’s poetic transformation enables it to transcend its status as a ‘dead city’ and Decadent trope. By combining the expressive possibilities of Symbolism with elements of the realist chronotope, Bruges can also be read as a future city that performs itself. It thereby provides a different illustration of Pierre Bourdieu’s argument that habitus can function as a form of symbolic capital. If, as Pascale Casanova argues, Brussels was the ‘capital of Symbolism’, in this reading Bruges constitutes an alternative Symbolist capital: another example of the capital and its double.

  • Ibsen on the London Stage: Independent Theatre as Transnational Space
    • Authors: Bullock P.
      Pages: 360 - 370
Abstract: AbstractThis article considers the British reception of Ibsen around the turn of the century, replacing modernism’s strongly teleological sense of its own temporality with a more spatially inflected account of artistic production that draws on tropes such as ‘the Republic of Letters’, ‘Weltliteratur’ or recent interest in ‘Global Ibsen’. In particular, it examines the independent theatre movement as an exemplary instance of a transnational space operating outside of national canons and histories, and dependent on the involvement of a large number of individuals whose linguistic and cultural allegiances resist ready definition. It views the contexts of British Ibsen reception around 1900 not from the point of view of their eventual outcome (either in the institutional history of British theatre, or in the story of Ibsen’s eventual place in the literary canon), but as a way of rethinking the interaction between the local, national and international in literary analysis and history.
