  • Indigenous Peoples without the Republic
    • Authors: Dowd G.
      Pages: 19 - 41
Abstract: The past several decades of scholarship offer two powerful themes touching on the relationship between the American Revolution and indigenous peoples. The first holds that on the eve of revolution, ordinary European settlers were already American Indians' greatest danger, a danger only to be restrained by indigenous action, imperial intervention, or both. The second closely allied theme holds that the American Revolution greatly advanced Indian dispossession. These story lines weave a narrative that begins in the 1760s, when financially strapped Great Britain, facing powerful Indian resistance to British claims of conquest, extended meaningful protection to Native Americans from the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Lakes. Settlers, locally oriented in politics and anti-Indian in sentiment, scrapped such imperial plans, often by murdering Indians, precipitating war. Metropolitan officials and appointees endeavored to regulate expansion, commerce, and violence. They offered coexistence and prospective subjecthood to Indians. The American Revolution dashed this incipient accommodation. It unleashed land-seeking, racist, backcountry men backed by a responsive government. Overthrowing an empire of graded rank in favor of a white settlers' republic, the Revolution endangered Native America.

  • What Yun Ch'i-ho Knew: U.S.-Japan Relations and Imperial Race Making in
Korea and the American South, 1904–1919
    • Authors: Suh C.
      Pages: 68 - 96
Abstract: On March 1, 1919, thousands of Koreans staged a public demonstration in Seoul to draw the attention of Woodrow Wilson. During the previous year, while World War I was still in progress, the American president had openly declared that all people in the aftermath of the war should be “dominated and governed only by their own consent,” by the principle of “self-determination.” When Wilson had appeared in January 1919 at the Paris Peace Conference to reconfigure the postwar world, the demonstrating Koreans, who had been living as colonial subjects of the Japanese Empire for many years, attempted to seize the opportunity and articulate their anticolonial aspirations in the same recognizable language. They championed the principle of self-determination aloud, hoping that Wilson would deliver them from Japanese rule.11

  • Beautiful Urbanism: Gender, Landscape, and Contestation in Latino
           Chicago's Age of Urban Renewal
    • Authors: Amezcua M.
      Pages: 97 - 119
Abstract: On a warm September day in 1953, elegantly dressed couples walked over dust and debris on their way to a dance in the Ashland Auditorium in Chicago. The beautifully ornate three-story structure, supporting a grand clock tower built during the first wave of the Chicago school architecture movement of the 1880s, now stood amid the rubble and dust produced by the nearby wrecking balls sent to clear the streets for new redevelopment projects in the Near West Side neighborhood. In contrast to the gloomy atmosphere surrounding the building, the inside of this decorative ballroom pulsated with jubilant dancing and music, as Latino groups celebrated las Fiestas Patrias, commemorating Mexican Independence Day. That evening, local bands performed, and the party culminated with the crowning of a beauty queen. Pageants, dances, and social celebrations helped Latinos repurpose buildings such as the Ashland Auditorium that prior waves of ethnic Europeans in the Near West Side had abandoned. The dilapidated buildings of the neighborhood, which the city now targeted for the construction of new civic areas and expressways, became critical spaces for Latinos to forge community bonds and beautify their neighborhood.11

Abstract: As he had many times before, in 1987 Gregorio Casillas returned to Guadalupe Victoria, a small rancho in the state of Zacatecas in north central Mexico. He proudly noted how his long hours of work in the Club Social Guadalupe Victoria had made nearly unrecognizable the hometown he left when he first migrated in 1948. Migrants residing in Los Angeles formed the club in 1962 to send aid to improve the rancho. By 1987, the club had created a program that helped the town's elderly attain their basic needs, installed benches in the church, paved the main street, built a clinic, fenced the school, set up electric power lines, and brought potable water. Through these investments, Casillas could materially perceive how, despite his physical absence, he was still a presence in Guadalupe Victoria.11

Abstract: On September 24, 2016, the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) opened its doors to the public with a three-day celebration. The latest addition to the Smithsonian Institution and the nineteenth museum to open on the National Mall, the NMAAHC represents more than a decade of intensive planning. Congress passed the enabling legislation in 2003, and the Smithsonian Board of Regents in 2006 endorsed the building of a museum dedicated to collecting, preserving, and sharing the long and complex histories of African Americans. Although the timeline was relatively short—in museum years—the opening of a new national museum is rare. As the many enthusiastic reviewers in the popular press noted, Founding Director Lonnie Bunch III and the staff faced many interpretive challenges in balancing “uplift and tragedy,” as the New York Times critic Holland Cotter wrote, and not shying away from confusing, troubling histories (“The Smithsonian African American Museum Is Here at Last,” New York Times, Sept. 15, 2016). Since the NMAAHC's opening, crowds have gathered every morning, with the lines often encircling the building, to wait patiently for entrance into the museum: thousands of school kids, older couples, community groups, and tourists. From its opening in late September through the end of December, a short three months, the museum welcomed over 700,000 visitors.
