  • Financing Dispossession: Stocks, Bonds, and the Deportation of Native
Peoples in the Antebellum United States
    • Authors: Saunt C.
      Pages: 315 - 337
Abstract: The cotton grown by Mississippi slaves, insured by New York and Boston financiers, and spun by Manchester wage laborers germinated in soil that had belonged, only a few months or years earlier, to Native Americans. For a brief five decades, the U.S. South dominated global cotton production, a result of the transformation of the region from indigenous farms to slave labor camps. Scholars have recently traced the network of financial capital that yoked mortgaged slaves and impoverished mill workers to planters, bankers, and consumers around the world. While it is evident that the global reach of the cotton empire—the millions of laborers and the vast sums of money at work—precipitated the dispossession of native peoples in the antebellum South, the precise link between financial capital and Indian expulsion has remained obscure. As a result, we speak in generalizations: Indian removal forced “60,000 of the cotton frontier's original inhabitants across the Mississippi,” opening the land “for speculation and cotton production”; it “transformed territory into property,” after which “capital flowed into the Lower Mississippi Valley”; and it belonged to “the project of continental consolidation,” driven by the “insatiable demand of cotton planters.”11

  • For Labor and Democracy: The Farm Security Administration's Competing
Visions for Farm Workers' Socioeconomic Reform and Civil Rights in the
           1940s
    • Authors: Martínez-Matsuda V.
      Pages: 338 - 361
Abstract: On December 8, 1942, marking the one-year anniversary of the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor, migrants residing at the Tulare Farm Workers Community in Linnell, California, discussed the topic “How shall we treat the enemy after we have won the war'” Featured migrant speakers included Mr. and Mrs. Willie Williams, Robert Goldsmith, and Loony Ledford. At the meeting, the Japanese were the enemy most discussed. Some suggested Americans “banish the enemy from the earth,” while others proposed “punishment for the leaders, but an education and democratic direction and food for the people.” Mrs. Williams declared that concentration camps were the answer even after the war was over and that these camps were “the place in which enemy aliens would have to be taught democratic principles.” Mr. Ledford, having fought in World War I, believed that “the Japs should be isolated and guarded like lepers even after the war.”11

  • A Transnational Protest against the National Security State:
Whistle-Blowing, Philip Agee, and Networks of Dissent
    • Authors: Mistry K.
      Pages: 362 - 389
Abstract: In the August 1975 issue of the New York Review of Books the acclaimed author Gabriel García Márquez reviewed a title that had been widely anticipated in the United States. The new release, with its story line involving foreign escapades, assassination plots, and torture, had the feel of a dramatic novel. The main protagonist worked for a secretive organization operating in Latin America that “promoted military coups and public disorders, circulated forged documents through the journalists on their secret payroll, financed strikes, arranged bloody repressions of demonstrations by students and workers … and ultimately established a system of brutal but effective secret police control.” The group was active throughout the hemisphere, propping up and destabilizing governments from Mexico to Chile. It is “a fascinating book” the Colombian novelist noted, “one reads it through without a break.”11

  • Hoboken Is Burning: Yuppies, Arson, and Displacement in the Postindustrial
           City
    • Authors: Gottlieb D.
      Pages: 390 - 416
Abstract: Between 1978 and 1983, nearly five hundred fires ripped through tenements and rooming houses in the square-mile city of Hoboken, New Jersey. The blazes killed fifty-five people and left more than eight thousand homeless. Almost all of the displaced residents were Puerto Rican; most never returned to Hoboken. Nearly every fire, investigators determined, had been the result of arson.11
