  • Everyone Their Own Historian
    • Authors: Ayers EL.
      Pages: 505 - 513
Abstract: Presidential addresses to historical organizations are not generally newsworthy, but in 1931 Carl Becker's speech to the American Historical Association made it into the New York Times. It may not have hurt that Becker's speech was interpreted as a slap in the face to professional historians. It was called “Everyman His Own Historian.”11

  • When the Slave Catchers Came to Town: Cultures of Violence along the
           Underground Railroad
    • Authors: Churchill RH.
      Pages: 514 - 537
Abstract: In early 1834 an enslaved woman named Bet escaped from the plantation of Thomas Culbreth in Caroline County, Maryland, and, with her infant child, crossed the Delaware River in a bid for freedom. At the end of December 1835, Culbreth led a posse into southern New Jersey to search for Bet. The posse raided a cabin a few miles outside of Salem, New Jersey, in the middle of the night, and forced nine African Americans, including five children, into wagons. When the posse passed through Salem, residents roused the community by ringing the fire bell. The crowd expressed concern for the well-being of the prisoners but seemed content to allow Culbreth to prove his claim before a local judge. At ten in the morning Judge George Bush heard the case and found that Culbreth's warrant was defective. Fearing that the judge was about to free the woman and child he claimed as slaves, Culbreth directed Philadelphia constable Michael Donnahower to draw his weapons and take possession of Bet, declaring, “I will show you what holds her, and whoever touches her does so at his peril. She is my property, and I will protect her at the risk of my life.” Until then, the large number of spectators at the trial had remained calm, willing to abide the outcome of the legal proceedings. But when Culbreth and Donnahower brandished weapons in open court, chaos ensued. While the county sheriff and a constable grappled with Donnahower and disarmed him, spectators helped Bet and her child out of one of the courtroom windows and took her to a place of refuge.11

  • The Fascist Game: Transnational Political Transmission and the Genesis of
           the U.S. Modern Right
    • Authors: Fronczak J.
      Pages: 563 - 588
Abstract: Since 1984, when the prominent scholar of French interwar politics Serge Berstein diagnosed France as “allergic to fascism,” historians of the French popular Right have led a revolution in the study of fascism. On the way to establishing the now-dominant view that France suffered a severe case of fascism in the 1930s, historians of the French popular Right have reimagined the very nature of fascism. Rather than see fascism as an ideology, as Berstein did, these historians have turned to treating fascism as a form of political behavior, predominantly a form of popular politics. Rather than a question of whether political actors in depression-era France possessed a fascist ideology, the question has become whether political actors in depression-era France performed the political practices that form fascism.11

  • Inside a Broadcasting Blacklist: Kraft Television Theatre, 1951–1955
    • Authors: Meyers CB.
      Pages: 589 - 616
Abstract: “Anyhow, it had better not happen again,” wrote John (Jack) Platt, Kraft's vice president of advertising, to John U. Reber, the head of the radio and television department at Kraft's advertising agency, the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT), in October 1952. Kraft, Platt continued, was “still getting repercussions from the last appearance of a certain subversive character on Kraft TV.” Platt was referring to the objections by an anticommunist activist named Laurence Johnson, a grocer from Syracuse, New York, to the appearance of the actor John Randolph on the program Kraft owned, Kraft Television Theatre (1947–1958). Reber, who was in charge of producing and casting Kraft's program, then wrote to Edward G. Wilson, the vice president of JWT's legal department: “Jack's statement that ‘it had better not happen again’ seems to mean we have no alternative but to check all Kraft names against a blacklist,” though “we all had been hoping that this step would not be necessary.” Wilson complied by creating a “Master List” of 1,045 names. But Reber eventually pushed back, lobbying Platt to reduce the list. He argued that the artistic quality of Kraft Television Theatre was at stake, and he challenged the standards by which it was compiled. In 1955 Reber warned Platt that “the time may come when those companies who have knuckled under to the witch hunters will be exposed as organizations who have used their commercial position to deprive individual Americans of fair treatment.”11

Abstract: As we wrap up 2018, I want to celebrate a couple of significant changes in this review section. First, please welcome Catherine Gudis to the editorial team. She will serve as coeditor for public history reviews, filling the position formerly held by Brian Horrigan. Dr. Gudis is associate professor of history and director of the Public History Program at the University of California, Riverside. In addition to helping us cover public history coast to coast, she brings more than twenty years of experience in multiplatform museum, preservation, and place-based civic-engagement work. Gudis has served as the lead curator on many important exhibitions and has created an impressive roster of public history projects that demonstrate her creativity and interdisciplinarity in the humanities. Speaking for the team at the Journal of American History, we're absolutely delighted to have her on board.
