  • Taking Liberties with Historic Trees
    • Authors: Farmer J.
      Pages: 815 - 842
Abstract: Today, one of the innumerable minor privileges of American whiteness is the freedom to appreciate trees as just trees: anodyne features, ahistorical objects. Viewing the same scenery, African Americans can hardly ignore a painful past. “Trees carry an intolerable weight,” states Glenis Redmond. Another poet, Lucille Clifton, begins, “surely i am able to write poems celebrating grass,” before finding it impossible to advance to woody flora. A predecessor, Gwendolyn Brooks, said in 1969: “In Chicago we have had spirited conversations about whether a black poet has the right to deal with trees, to concern himself with trees. And one of the things that I've always said was, certainly, certainly a black poet may be involved in a concern for trees, if only because when he looks at one he thinks of how his ancestors have been lynched thereon.”11

  • President, Planter, Politician: James Monroe, the Missouri Crisis, and the
           Politics of Slavery
    • Authors: Hammond J.
      Pages: 843 - 867
Abstract: Historians have long sought to assess the role of President James Monroe in forging and then negotiating the passage of the Missouri Compromise of 1820. Their assessments have been written within a historiographical tradition that praises statesmanship over sectionalism, celebrates southern statesmen's invocations of union and nationalism, and elevates compromise to the loftiest of American political values. Within that historiographical paradigm, interpretations of the politics of slavery focus on how sectional extremists exploited the fragility of the Union for their own purposes, and how moderate unionist statesmen intervened to save the Union from sectionalists. In turn, much historical writing seeks to identify sectional threats to union, castigate disunionists, and then celebrate how unionists won in every sectional crisis from the 1770s through the late 1850s, or explain how disunionists triumphed in 1860–1861. Overlapping spectrums of union and disunion, slavery and antislavery, statesmen and sectionalists form a metanarrative that provides an outline for most writing on slavery and politics from the American Revolution through the Civil War. In the broader scholarly literature on the politics of slavery, disunionism and narrow sectionalism are cardinal sins; unionism and nationalism are virtues.11

  • “Land of the White Hunter”: Legal Liberalism and the Racial Politics
of Morals Enforcement in Midcentury Los Angeles
    • Authors: Fischer A.
      Pages: 868 - 884
Abstract: Late one night in October 1961, Los Angeles police officers V. C. Dossey and C. H. Watson thought they had made a legitimate arrest when they charged Betty, a white woman, with disorderly conduct. The officers were in their radio car, patrolling a predominantly black neighborhood in South Los Angeles—an area, according to police, “plagued by females” engaging in suspect sexual practices—when they observed Betty “cruis[ing] in a manner designed to attract” the attention of men. When Dossey and Watson stopped to question Betty, she became “hostile” and refused to identify herself. A search of Betty's belongings turned up more evidence of her sexual criminality, including a “contraceptive kit.” Later, when officers interrogated Betty at the police station, she delivered in “the most vulgar and profane language … her opinion of ‘blue coats.’”11

  • Interchange: Corruption Has a History
    • Authors: Baker P; Berry M, Czitrom D, et al.
      Pages: 912 - 938
Abstract: Since Donald J. Trump took office in January 2017, his presidential administration has been beset with accusations of corruption. The charges range broadly, from conflicts of interest to receipt of emoluments, from campaign finance violations to conspiracy to defraud. Such allegations raise questions about the history of corruption in the United States. To better understand that history, the JAH invited seven scholars to join us in an online conversation between October and November 2018. We asked these participants fundamental questions about the definition, nature, practice, and periodization of corruption in the United States. Read together, their answers offer views of corruption in an array of public institutions: in elections; in local, state, and federal governments; in banking and finance; in industry and unions; and in law enforcement.

  • Peace History: Curricular Challenges and Innovative Opportunities
    • Authors: Westhoff LM; Howlett CF.
      Pages: 939 - 943
Abstract: This installment of Textbooks and Teaching is the by-product of collaboration between the section's contributing editor and members of the Peace History Society. When Chuck Howlett first approached journal editors with the idea, the benefits were clear. A partnership provided Journal of American History readers an opportunity to consider the possibilities for teaching a subfield often glossed over in the narratives of U.S. surveys. In addition to offering the approaches to teaching both survey and specialty courses from historical experts in the field of peace history, it promised also to raise critical issues about teaching history in today's political climate. A theme that emerges in these essays is that teaching about peace and justice requires educators to challenge the most commonly used classroom narratives dominated by a particular nationalistic viewpoint, which shape students' understanding of popular historical events and personalities. The essays that follow encourage historians and classroom practitioners to build a curriculum that identifies and explores various dimensions of peacemaking as part of a shared tradition in U.S. history and beyond.

  • One Course, Two Presidents, Three Years: Teaching Peace History in Donald
           Trump's America
    • Authors: Fryer H.
      Pages: 944 - 950
Abstract: In March 2018 the political commentator Ben Shapiro presented “A Full Defense of the Second Amendment” at my university. Breaking from standard post-tragedy decorum, Shapiro refused to be cowed by the fresh pain from the February 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, and went hard at arguments for gun control. During the question-and-answer session, Shapiro advised a high school student against attending a “conservative” college to instead “enter the belly of the beast” where professors assign “stupid commie literature [like] Howard Zinn.” He claimed that by reading both the assigned “commie literature” and the conservative canon ostensibly hidden from them, the student would best the adversaries at the lectern with a superior command of both conservative arguments and the professoriate's own uniformly “leftist” reasoning. His words tumbled forth as I was prepping the next day's session of my freshman survey, Waging Peace in the Twentieth Century, which was devoted to contextualizing, close reading, and comparing two activists' moral objections to the war in Vietnam: one by Martin Luther King Jr. and the other, coincidentally, by Howard Zinn. I began making space for the elephant that would be in the room, though this meant breaking from my once-strict rules against presentism, personal opinion, and intellectual meandering. Time would be tight; I promised the students time to situate today's responses to mass shootings within historical currents of American peace activism, and they needed work on close reading with the primary documents. We nonetheless opened class with students' responses to Shapiro's claims, talked about avenues for investigating those claims, and established the definition of “indoctrination.” The air was saturated with the white-hot politics of the moment by the time we got to King and Zinn, and the students were laser-focused on how both writers connected war to other structures of power, including racial inequality and nationalism.11

  • Integrating Peace History in the U.S. History Survey Course: Challenging
           Identity from the Outside In
    • Authors: Bricker RA; Proulx M.
      Pages: 951 - 958
Abstract: The rhetoric of war shapes the structure of U.S. history survey courses even as it permeates constructions of national identity and political discourse. In American classrooms, schoolchildren learn in the Pledge of Allegiance that the American national self is defined by “one nation under God, with liberty and justice for all.” These ideals are reinforced with a now-contentious national anthem, sung at sports events from Little League baseball to National Football League games, reminding listeners that the Star-Spangled Banner waves over the “land of the free and home of the brave.” Its lesser-known final stanza begins with the confident declaration that “then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto—‘In God is our trust.’” These patriotic pledge and anthem lines contain what Seymour Martin Lipset correctly identifies as five characteristics of Americanness: religiosity, optimism, patriotism, individualism, and civic rights.11

  • Teaching the Vietnam Antiwar Movement: Confronting Myths and
           Misconceptions
    • Authors: Lieberman R.
      Pages: 959 - 965
Abstract: College students continue to flock to courses on the 1960s because of the mystique around the protests of that era, which has been amplified by current movements such as Black Lives Matter and #MeToo. We are finally past the time when students' primary source of information about sixties movements was Forrest Gump (1994). Teachers make thoughtful use of primary sources, pay increasing attention to the experience of ordinary people, and introduce competing perspectives in the classroom. Yet most students have not engaged with the 1960s beyond events and personalities that received media attention and shape collective memory. Whereas popular culture has become a bit more sophisticated in its treatment of the black freedom movement, as in the highly acclaimed film Selma (2014), antiwar protest has yet to receive serious attention.11

  • Traversing Partisanship and Teaching Peace and Justice in the U.S. History
           Survey
    • Authors: Barbero AS.
      Pages: 966 - 970
Abstract: In this era of intense partisanship, several of the usual topics in U.S. history survey courses have become newly charged with political controversy. As both consumers of mass culture and members of America's body politic, students are inundated with ideological rhetoric drawing on historical references. For instructors this not only makes navigating the traditional curriculum more difficult but it also affects our ability to present matters related to peacemaking and social justice to our students as valid components of American history. As a community college faculty member tasked primarily with teaching American history survey courses, I have worked to develop teaching practices that help me traverse the growing partisan divides within my classroom. As a specialist in movements for peace and justice in the United States, I have been able to illustrate to my students the valuable roles that peacemaking and social justice activism have played in American history. Such efforts are especially important at this time when many popular politicos and media commentators debase peace and social justice activists with terms such as snowflake and social justice warrior, and associate historical movements for peace and social justice with the unrealistic idealism of either the 1960s or the millennial generation. Some even go as far as to deem this social activism akin to secular communism bent on leading the United States into decline.11
