Abstract: When Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes resigned from the Supreme Court in January 1932, individuals from across the political spectrum lauded him as no other justice in American history. The Republican majority leader in the Senate, James Watson, claimed that “every lover of justice” would “keenly regret” his leaving, while William Green, the head of the American Federation of Labor, stated that “working men and women are filled with a deep sense of loss.”11

  • Too Close for Comfort: Canada, the U.S. Civil Rights Movement, and the
           North American Colo(u)r Line
    • Authors: McKercher A.
      Pages: 72 - 96
Abstract: In the wake of the racial violence in the mid-2010s across the United States, several journalists, pointing to historic and contemporary discrimination against minorities in Canada, cautioned Canadians against being “smug about race.” Highlighting the plight of indigenous peoples, one contributor to the country's leading newsmagazine went even further, declaring, “Canada's race problem' It's even worse than America's.” Canadians have long been both keen observers of racial discrimination in the United States and prone to drawing self-congratulatory comparisons. To wit, the Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young's songs “Southern Man” (1970) and “Alabama” (1972) were sharply critical of southern bigotry, while in “American Woman” (1970), The Guess Who told their eponymous American target: “I don't need your ghetto scenes.” As one member of the band recalled of the song's genesis, “We'd never seen ghettoes in Winnipeg before and suddenly we're in Savannah, Georgia, witnessing real poverty.” Yet 1960s Canada did have its own “ghetto scenes,” though many Canadians seemed willfully ignorant of this fact. As the Métis activist Howard Adams complained in 1969, white Canadians were “self-righteous, arrogant, and free from any social conscience with regard to racism.” Two years later, J. Ashton Brathwaite, a Barbadian living in Canada, noted: “Contrary to widespread belief, Canadian society is polluted with the virus of racism—subtle racism.” Canada, he added, should stand for “Cold Anti Niggers And Definitely American.”11

  • Prospecting the World: Landsat and the Search for Minerals in Space Age
           Globalization
    • Authors: Black M.
      Pages: 97 - 120
Abstract: In 1977 an American satellite, Landsat 2, helped Chevron Oil Company discover a vast petroleum reserve and set the stage for the first onshore oil well in Sudan. A joint venture of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) and the U.S. Department of the Interior, the Landsat program provided a planetary view of the earth and its natural resources. These satellites floated freely across national borders because of international agreements that allowed space-based objects to orbit in the upper atmosphere. Nations under surveillance could purchase Landsat program images from the U.S. government, often through the U.S. Agency for International Development (Usaid). Private companies, such as Chevron, could also purchase images, and did so. Chevron acquired images of Sudan as part of exploratory efforts that led to the discovery of 120,000 square miles of petroleum-rich land. The wells drilled in that area produced upward of 12,300 barrels per day for the oil company and helped catalyze a “black gold” rush in Sudan. In nations across the so-called Third World, similar economic and ecological transformations were underway, as U.S. government officials and private companies used Landsat images to identify untapped minerals and other natural resources under the auspices of international development. Third World leaders, in turn, debated the technology, with some offering support for the Landsat program and others charging that it constituted an “infringement on their own sovereign slice of earth.”11

  • Introduction
    • Authors: Franz K; Gudis C.
      Pages: 126 - 127
Abstract: In 1968 the French Marxist philosopher Henri Lefebvre published his influential Le Droit à la ville (The right to the city) and six years later expanded on its evocative claims in La Production de l'espace (The production of space). These became foundational texts in urban theory, helping bridge geography and history, sociology and landscape studies. Lefebvre described the city as a constructed oeuvre, a work produced by the creative and collective participation of all its inhabitants, irrespective of national citizenship or level of property ownership. All residents, he claimed, have a right to much more than having the city produced for them by the dominant classes; they have the right to participate in the process, enfranchised through their everyday activities and labors that make cities come to life.
