  • American Entomologist Readers Speak Out
    • Authors: Steffey K; Junker L.
      Pages: 131 - 133
Abstract: Magazines and other periodicals can seem like a one-way communication. You receive a magazine in your mailbox or a newspaper in your driveway, you read it or don’t, and you move on with your day. But magazines that want to thrive must find ways to create two-way conversation with their readers, to ensure that readers’ needs and interests are fully understood. This is all the more important in today’s environment, where competition for readers’ time is only a screen tap away.

  • Reality Bites
    • Authors: Berenbaum M.
      Pages: 134 - 137
Abstract: During the month of July, 2018, almost a dozen stories from across the nation reporting on different bee-related incidents appeared on Google News, and all had one thing in common: they contained the phrase “one out of every three bites of food.” On 13 July, for example, the Worcester Telegram & Gazette ran a profile of Desiree Gracie, Honey Queen for Worcester County and Mass Bee (the state beekeeping association for Massachusetts). As she explained, “Honey bees are so important in the farming industry… One third of the food we eat comes from pollination due to honeybees. To put it simply, it is about one in every three bites of food. This may seem like a small number, but think of it like this, one third of the pollination is done from one species of bees” (Cleveland 2018).

  • Bert Hölldobler: For the Love of Ants
    • Authors: Rice M.
      Pages: 138 - 145
Abstract: Berthold “Bert” Hölldobler is University Professor of Life Sciences and Regents’ and Foundation Professor at Arizona State University. In 1991, he and his co-author, Edward O. Wilson, were awarded the Pulitzer Prize in General Non-Fiction for their book The Ants—the first purely scientific book to be recognized with a Pulitzer. A book review in Science noted that this “mighty tome will surely take its place among the greatest of all entomology books (and) it will inspire many new generations of students with its blend of scholarship, enthusiasm, and unabashed delight.”

  • Whatever Happened to IPM'
    • Authors: Peterson R; Higley L, Pedigo L.
      Pages: 146 - 150
Abstract: Why are we even asking this question' Integrated pest management (IPM) is a term well known. It is used liberally by scientists and other practitioners without the need for definition. It is a major success story for society in the realms of agriculture, applied ecology, urban management, and public health (GAO 2001, Farrar et al. 2015). It has arguably penetrated the social consciousness more than any other applied ecological science, serves as a model for sustainable agriculture, and is consequently viewed as a rousing success (Kogan and Jepson 2007). But is this really true'

    • Authors: Chouvenc T; Li H, Su N.
      Pages: 152 - 154
Abstract: Termite research is represented by a relatively small group of scientists around the world in comparison to other fields of entomology (Chouvenc and Su 2015). With more than 3,000 termite species described, a large portion of the research has focused on a subset of pest species owing to their economic impact as structural or agricultural pests (Krishna et al. 2013). However, termites are also “social cockroaches” and represent a unique group that attained eusociality through a pathway independent from the one in social Hymenoptera (Nalepa 2015). This uniqueness is compounded by elegant mutualistic associations with microbes that termites have evolved throughout their radiation (Bignell et al. 2011).

  • The Insect Collectors’ Code

Abstract: Why do we collect insects' Each fall, we pose this question to students enrolled in Insect Biodiversity and Evolution (ENT 432), a core course for the entomology program at Penn State. As with most courses that cover insect taxonomy, spanning dozens of departments and across many generations of entomologists, students are expected to journey into the field, capture and euthanize insects, prepare high-quality, well-labeled specimens, and identify them. The time-honored tradition of building an insect collection remains (as one colleague at a recent ESA annual meeting described it) the ultimate immersive, experiential learning exercise for entomologists-in-training. Our students tend to agree. They frequently acknowledge the value of specimens as data, the importance of vouchers, and the myriad ways natural history collections facilitate education, outreach, and research. Collections themselves seem to be noncontroversial and easy to discuss.

Abstract: In 2012, an article was published in American Entomologist regarding the influence of rhinoceros beetles on Akihabara culture (Hoshina and Takada 2012). However, one critical game was missing from their discussion: Pokémon. With the advent of Pokémon GO, an augmented reality-based cell phone app released in the U.S. on 6 July 2016 (Fig. 1), the Pokémon craze is once again in the limelight, and this presents a unique opportunity for entomologists and science educators to increase student interest in natural history.

Abstract: Each year, the Entomological Society of America’s (ESA) Student Affairs Committee (SAC) organizes and moderates the student debate competition at the annual ESA meeting. However, 2016 was a special year. ESA hosted the XXV International Congress of Entomology’s (ICE) meeting in Orlando, Florida, and thus the ESA SAC worked in tandem with the ICE SAC to organize the International Student Debate Competition. Topics for the debates reflected the ICE 2016 theme of “Entomology without Borders.” Each debate involved teams making a choice regarding policy surrounding international issues. The teams discussed the following topics:

Abstract: Close your eyes for a moment. Think back to an Annual Meeting of the Entomological Society of America that you attended, maybe the first one, if you can. Now, try to form a mental image of that meeting, particularly of the people in attendance. What image did you form' If you are a long-standing member of several decades and your recollection was from many years ago, your image may be of an Annual Meeting attended by members that were mostly male, mostly older, and mostly Caucasian. However, if you joined the Society in the last few years, your image may be very different—attendees that included more women, more early-career entomologists, and more culturally diverse members. Although the first image may have been accurate in earlier times, the latter image is likely more accurate today.

Abstract: Outreach can be a powerful element of integrated pest management (IPM), and it is a key component of programs designed to reduce the spread of invasive pests. Outreach initiatives help to inform and update citizenry, land managers, scientists, and policy makers about exotic pest detection, invasion progression, and management options. They may include awareness campaigns, explanation of readiness/preparedness plans, information for professionals (e.g., arborists and landscape managers), and engaging educational activities for children.

  • The TIEG Days

Abstract: I‘m sorry to begin on a sad note, but while working on this column I received news that one of my greatest supporters, Bruce Heming, had passed away on 21 July 2018. Bruce was an emeritus professor at the University of Alberta, and a well-known authority on insect development, and on the Thysanoptera. His book Insect Development and Evolution was a tremendous achievement, and many of us have fond memories of the course he taught on this subject as well. I was still in my teens when Bruce took a sabbatical year to begin work on the book, and he only managed to finish the introduction, which ran to more than 500 pages. He then realized that he needed to simplify things. Bruce was an immensely knowledgeable fellow, and a good-hearted person as well. The reason I mention him here is that every time I crossed paths with him lately, he would have something enthusiastic and intelligent to say about the topic of my last Terminal Segment. I don’t get much feedback on my columns because, unlike blogs, they have no comments section, so Bruce always made me feel like I was doing something worthwhile. Thinking about Bruce put me in a nostalgic mood, and entomological nostalgia led to the topic for this column: my history with “TIEG.”
