  • The Coming Era of Open Data
    • Authors: Collins SL; Verdier JM.
Abstract: The culture of science is changing. Both funding agencies and journals are placing increasing pressure on authors to provide the data that underlie their publications. Indeed, the US Long Term Ecological Research program and many of its partner programs have been pioneers in ecological informatics and data accessibility. Nevertheless, much more remains to be done before the notion of research data shifts from personal property to community resource. The movement for more open science has been growing over the past few decades, driven by a number of factors, including the development of informatics tools for data storage, description, and discovery, as well as the need to make research more repeatable and replicable. However, the culture of data sharing, let alone open science, has not kept up with our ability to manage, describe, and distribute data. Many remain hesitant because of a variety of real and perceived concerns, including the time investment needed to develop sufficient metadata, a lack of incentive and positive reinforcement, and fear of being scooped. However, high-profile exposés about lack of reproducibility of experimental results in psychology (doi:10.1126/science.aac4716) further emphasize the need to change how we practice our craft.

  • Long-Term Studies Contribute Disproportionately to Ecology and Policy
    • Authors: Hughes BB; Beas-Luna R, Barner AK, et al.
Abstract: AbstractAs the contribution for long-term ecological and environmental studies (LTEES) to our understanding of how species and ecosystems respond to a changing global climate becomes more urgent, the relative number and investment in LTEES are declining. To assess the value of LTEES to advancing the field of ecology, we evaluated relationships between citation rates and study duration, as well as the representation of LTEES with the impact factors of 15 ecological journals. We found that the proportionate representation of LTEES increases with journal impact factor and that the positive relationship between citation rate and study duration is stronger as journal impact factor increases. We also found that the representation of LTEES in reports written to inform policy was greater than their representation in the ecological literature and that their authors particularly valued LTEES. We conclude that the relative investment in LTEES by ecologists and funders should be seriously reconsidered for advancing ecology and its contribution to informing environmental policy.

  • The Oxidative Cost of Reproduction: Theoretical Questions and Alternative
           Mechanisms
    • Authors: Alonso-Alvarez C; Canelo T, Romero-Haro A.
Abstract: AbstractThe role of reproduction in increasing oxidative stress may be fundamental to understanding aging and the evolutionary trade-off between survival and fecundity. However, contradictory results among experimental studies have challenged the oxidative cost of reproduction. Limitations in experimental design may explain inconsistent findings. Nonetheless, some authors have argued that the hypothesis is founded on the faulty assumptions of an energy-based allocation trade-off and a direct positive link between metabolic rates and the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by the mitochondria. We propose that evolutionary trade-offs do not require the allocation of limiting resources and that reproduction may result in ROS-induced oxidative stress without increased mitochondrial ROS. We discuss the previously published oxidative-shielding hypothesis and propose two new hypotheses: hormesis and extortion for reproduction. These hypotheses aim to explain the counterintuitive results indicating that there is less oxidative damage in animals allowed to breed compared with those prevented from reproducing.

  • The Resilience of Marine Ecosystems to Climatic Disturbances
    • Authors: O'Leary JK; Micheli F, Airoldi L, et al.
Abstract: AbstractThe intensity and frequency of climate-driven disturbances are increasing in coastal marine ecosystems. Understanding the factors that enhance or inhibit ecosystem resilience to climatic disturbance is essential. We surveyed 97 experts in six major coastal biogenic ecosystem types to identify “bright spots” of resilience in the face of climate change. We also evaluated literature that was recommended by the experts that addresses the responses of habitat-forming species to climatic disturbance. Resilience was commonly reported in the expert surveys (80% of experts). Resilience was observed in all ecosystem types and at multiple locations worldwide. The experts and literature cited remaining biogenic habitat, recruitment/connectivity, physical setting, and management of local-scale stressors as most important for resilience. These findings suggest that coastal ecosystems may still hold great potential to persist in the face of climate change and that local- to regional-scale management can help buffer global climatic impacts.

  • Incorporating Sociocultural Phenomena into Ecosystem-Service Valuation:
           The Importance of Critical Pluralism
    • Authors: van Riper CJ; Landon AC, Kidd S, et al.
Abstract: AbstractEcosystem-services scholarship has largely focused on monetary valuation and the material contributions of ecosystems to human well-being. Increasingly, research is calling for a deeper understanding of how less tangible, nonmaterial values shape management and stakeholder decisions. We propose a framework that characterizes a suite of sociocultural phenomena rooted in key social science disciplines that are currently underrepresented in the ecosystem-services literature. The results from three example studies are presented to demonstrate how the tenets of this conceptual model can be applied in practice. We consider the findings from these studies in light of three priorities for future research: (1) complexities in individual and social functioning, (2) the salience and specificity of the perceived benefits of nature, and (3) distinctions among value concepts. We also pose a series of questions to stimulate reflection on how ecosystem-services research can adopt more pluralistic viewpoints that accommodate different forms of knowledge and its acquisition.

  • Using Social Network Measures in Wildlife Disease Ecology, Epidemiology,
           and Management
    • Authors: Silk MJ; Croft DP, Delahay RJ, et al.
Abstract: AbstractContact networks, behavioral interactions, and shared use of space can all have important implications for the spread of disease in animals. Social networks enable the quantification of complex patterns of interactions; therefore, network analysis is becoming increasingly widespread in the study of infectious disease in animals, including wildlife. We present an introductory guide to using social-network-analytical approaches in wildlife disease ecology, epidemiology, and management. We focus on providing detailed practical guidance for the use of basic descriptive network measures by suggesting the research questions to which each technique is best suited and detailing the software available for each. We also discuss how using network approaches can be used beyond the study of social contacts and across a range of spatial and temporal scales. Finally, we integrate these approaches to examine how network analysis can be used to inform the implementation and monitoring of effective disease management strategies.

  • More Training in Animal Ethics Needed for European Biologists
    • Authors: Zemanova MA.
Abstract: AbstractResearch on basic animal biology and ecology is essential for increasing our knowledge and for improving species conservation. However, it often involves the suffering or killing of a certain number of animals, and such matters are rarely debated. Moreover, in providing education in ethics, biology seems to lag behind other disciplines of life sciences. Here, I first review several situations in biological research and species management in which animal ethics issues arise. Second, in order to determine the current status of the ethics education of undergraduate students in biological sciences in Europe, I report the results of the evaluation of curricula at 150 universities offering such programs. Surprisingly, merely 9% of the programs offered ethics as a mandatory and stand-alone course. I consider this a significant gap in biological education and advocate that biologists should receive proper training in animal ethics.

  • The Tree of Life Reconsidered
    • Authors: Potera C.
Abstract: The ever-evolving tree of life has undergone significant new growth thanks to genomic research. The latest rendition added 1011 new bacteria and Archaea, and it reduced humans, plants, animals, fungi, and other eukaryotes to a small branch that represents a tiny percentage of known biodiversity.

  • Optimal Tree Canopy Cover during Ecological Restoration: A Case Study of
Possible Ecological Thresholds in Changting, China
    • Authors: Cao S; Lu C, Yue H.
Abstract: AbstractTree planting is a powerful ecological restoration method that is frequently used around the world. However, the optimal tree canopy cover to promote ecosystem sustainability during ecological restoration is not yet known. To provide some guidance, we monitored 24 artificial restoration (afforestation) plots from 1999 to 2014 and 30 natural restoration plots from 1984 to 2014 in Changting County, Southern China. We found that some ecological parameters stabilized when the tree canopy cover was as low as 48.5% in the afforestation plots. The effects of this ecological threshold appeared approximately 10 years after plantation establishment. This stability was not detected or occurred after a much longer time in the natural restoration plots. The time lag before the stability appears may have prevented previous afforestation researchers from detecting such consequences, which would not appear in short-term research. Therefore, long-term research is needed to monitor the effects of ecological restoration activities.

  • Metaresearch for Evaluating Reproducibility in Ecology and Evolution
    • Authors: Fidler F; Chee Y, Wintle BC, et al.
Abstract: AbstractRecent replication projects in other disciplines have uncovered disturbingly low levels of reproducibility, suggesting that those research literatures may contain unverifiable claims. The conditions contributing to irreproducibility in other disciplines are also present in ecology. These include a large discrepancy between the proportion of “positive” or “significant” results and the average statistical power of empirical research, incomplete reporting of sampling stopping rules and results, journal policies that discourage replication studies, and a prevailing publish-or-perish research culture that encourages questionable research practices. We argue that these conditions constitute sufficient reason to systematically evaluate the reproducibility of the evidence base in ecology and evolution. In some cases, the direct replication of ecological research is difficult because of strong temporal and spatial dependencies, so here, we propose metaresearch projects that will provide proxy measures of reproducibility.

  • Mapping the Landscape of Public Attitudes on Synthetic Biology
    • Authors: Akin H; Rose KM, Scheufele DA, et al.
Abstract: AbstractThis research offers one of the first analyses of the US public's views about synthetic biology, based on nationally representative survey data. We provide in-depth, multiyear descriptive results of public attitudes toward this issue and compare them with individuals’ attitudes toward other issues. Our data indicate that the public does not generally feel informed about synthetic biology or believe it is personally important. However, Americans express more reservations about the moral downside of synthetic biology than about other issues. Multivariate analysis reveals that values and predispositions—particularly religiosity, deference to scientific authority and trust in scientists—are linked to support for synthetic biology. We also see evidence indicating that deference to scientific authority reduces the potential for religiosity and distrust in scientists to polarize public attitudes about synthetic biology. We conclude by describing the implications of our findings for the development of synthetic biology research and upstream public engagement.
