  • An Integrated View of Complex Landscapes: A Big Data-Model Integration
           Approach to Transdisciplinary Science
    • Authors: Peters D; Burruss N, Rodriguez L, et al.
      Pages: 653 - 669
Abstract: AbstractThe Earth is a complex system comprising many interacting spatial and temporal scales. We developed a transdisciplinary data-model integration (TDMI) approach to understand, predict, and manage for these complex dynamics that focuses on spatiotemporal modeling and cross-scale interactions. Our approach employs human-centered machine-learning strategies supported by a data science integration system (DSIS). Applied to ecological problems, our approach integrates knowledge and data on (a) biological processes, (b) spatial heterogeneity in the land surface template, and (c) variability in environmental drivers using data and knowledge drawn from multiple lines of evidence (i.e., observations, experimental manipulations, analytical and numerical models, products from imagery, conceptual model reasoning, and theory). We apply this transdisciplinary approach to a suite of increasingly complex ecologically relevant problems and then discuss how information management systems will need to evolve into DSIS to allow other transdisciplinary questions to be addressed in the future.

  • The Interactive Role of Wind and Water in Functioning of Drylands: What
           Does the Future Hold'
    • Authors: Okin G; Sala O, Vivoni E, et al.
      Pages: 670 - 677
Abstract: AbstractFeedback mechanisms between abiotic and biotic processes in dryland ecosystems lead to a strong sensitivity to interannual variations in climate. Under a future regime of higher temperatures but potentially increased rainfall variability, drylands are anticipated to experience changes in wind and water transport that will alter plant community composition and feedback on landscape connectivity. Here, we present a conceptual framework for understanding the coupling of vegetation productivity, aeolian transport, and hydrologic connectivity under anticipated changes in future climate, which suggests that a more extreme climatic regime will lead to more connected landscapes with attendant losses in soil, nutrient, and water resources. When enhanced connectivity triggers state changes, irreversible changes in ecosystem functioning can occur, with implications for the future of global drylands.

Misconceptions and Their Implications for Management
    • Authors: Bestelmeyer B; Peters D, Archer S, et al.
      Pages: 678 - 690
Abstract: AbstractTransitions from semiarid grassland to shrubland states are among the most widely recognized examples of regime shifts in terrestrial ecosystems. Nonetheless, the processes causing grassland–shrubland transitions and their consequences are incompletely understood. We challenge several misconceptions about these transitions in desert grasslands, including that (a) they are currently controlled by local livestock grazing and drought events, (b) they represent severe land degradation, and (c) restoration of grassland states is impossible. Grassland–shrubland transitions are the products of multiple drivers and feedback systems, both ecological and social, interacting at multiple scales of space and time. Grass recovery within shrubland states—with and without shrub removal—produces novel ecosystems that are dissimilar from historical grasslands but that provide important ecosystem services. Projected increases in climate variability are likely to promote the further displacement of perennial grasses by xerophytic shrubs. This article offers guidelines for managing grassland–shrubland transitions in the face of changing biophysical and socioeconomic circumstances.

  • Viewing Woody-Plant Encroachment through a Social–Ecological Lens

Abstract: AbstractGrasslands and savannas worldwide have been dramatically altered by woody-plant encroachment (WPE). Maintaining remnant grasslands and restoring degraded grasslands for the people and animals that depend on them will require a new paradigm for WPE, one that views WPE as a complex social–ecological system. Here, we examine WPE in this light, using a conceptual framework designed to bridge the biophysical and social domains. On the basis of this press–pulse WPE framework, we develop a set of integrative hypotheses and identify key knowledge gaps using the Southern Great Plains as a case study. An alternative—and potentially complementary—approach to the press–pulse WPE framework is that of classical dynamic systems modeling, which has been widely adopted in ecology and economics. The explicit coupling of the press–pulse WPE framework with dynamic systems modeling has the potential to yield new insights for understanding the local- to regional-scale processes that drive and constrain changes in grass–woody plant abundances and for predicting the socioeconomic and ecological consequences of these changes.

  • Broadening the Impact of K–12 Science Education Collaborations in a
           Shifting Education Landscape
    • Authors: Bestelmeyer S; Grace E, Haan-Amato S, et al.
      Pages: 706 - 714
Abstract: AbstractFor more than 75 years, scientists and educators in New Mexico have provided programs that translate research on dryland ecosystems into broader scientific understanding for the public. Kindergarten through twelfth grade (K–12) students and teachers became a primary audience for these programs in the 1990s. Our team from the Jornada Long-Term Ecological Research Program, the US Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service Jornada Experimental Range, and the nonprofit Asombro Institute for Science Education navigated changes in K–12 science education to educate more than 200,000 students. The goal of this article is to describe our program's responses to six education trends in order to provide experience-based guidance to others designing and delivering K–12 programs in a shifting science education landscape. We expect our experience will be relevant to others who are trying to scale their outreach programs to larger, more diverse communities while maintaining alignment with changing trends in education at local, state, and federal levels.

  • The Role of a Professional Society in Broadening Participation in Science:
A National Model for Increasing Persistence
    • Authors: Mourad T; McNulty A, Liwosz D, et al.

Abstract: AbstractProfessional societies can, and should, recruit and retain young scientists by providing a welcoming and inclusive intellectual home. SEEDS (Strategies for Ecology Education, Diversity and Sustainability), the flagship education program of the Ecological Society of America, is designed to broaden participation in ecology through mentoring, field trips, leadership development, and research fellowships. Nationally, fewer than 40% of college students who intended to pursue a career in science, technology, math, or engineering complete their degrees in these fields, and these numbers are even smaller for underrepresented minorities (URMs). In contrast, 80% of SEEDS alumni in our study had completed at least one degree in an ecology-related field, and the completion rate for URMs was 85%. In addition, 71% of working SEEDS alumni respondents have careers in ecology. SEEDS is a model for other professional societies wishing to increase students’ self-efficacy and sense of belonging through professional development and positive social reinforcement.
