  • Educational Effectiveness of a Video Lesson for Bullying Prevention
    • Authors: Yokoo M; Wakuta M, Shimizu E.
      Pages: 71 - 79
Abstract: Bullying is a serious problem with long-term and short-term negative effects on both victims and perpetrators. Many bullying-prevention programs have been developed on the basis of peer support and social learning theories. The purpose of this study was to develop an antibullying program consisting of a short video and to survey the effectiveness of the video.
Authors used a two-group quasi-experimental design using a pretest, posttest, and follow-up test. Subjects were 357 elementary school students, divided into intervention and comparison groups. The results of the bullying quiz revealed that the intervention group had significantly greater knowledge about bullying than the comparison group. In addition, students’ knowledge was greater at posttest and follow-up test than at pretest. Scores for the follow-up test, however, were lower than those for the posttest. The next step forward would be the development of a program with a more sustained effect.

  • A Qualitative Study of School Social Workers’ Roles and Challenges
           in Dropout Prevention
    • Authors: Webber K.
      Pages: 82 - 90
Abstract: AbstractHigh school dropout remains a persistent educational and social problem in the United States, despite promising declines in dropout rates. Social workers are uniquely positioned to identify and address numerous factors influencing students’ likelihood of graduating. The purpose of this small qualitative study was to describe social workers’ engagement in dropout prevention efforts and the context in which this work occurs. Through interviews with school social workers, school counselors, and district-level administrators, three focal practice areas were identified: (1) supporting student attendance, (2) providing intensive support for selected at-risk students, and (3) encouraging dropouts to return to a diploma-granting program. Respondents also identified common barriers and ethical dilemmas that hindered their practice, including challenges in defining the scope and boundaries of the social work profession, and tensions between the needs of the school and the needs of students. Suggestions for future research are provided, and implications for policy, practice, and the education of future school social work practitioners are discussed.

  • Roles of Gender, Forms, and Locations in Understanding Peer Victimization
Experiences: Implications for Prevention and Intervention
    • Authors: Williford A; Fite P, DePaolis K, et al.
      Pages: 93 - 101
Abstract: AbstractThe experience of peer victimization, or being the target of aggression, is common throughout childhood and adolescence and often results in negative developmental outcomes. Further knowledge of peer victimization is needed for effective prevention and intervention to promote positive youth development. The current study extends the victimization literature by (a) examining victimization rates at locations both within and outside of the school context, (b) identifying the forms of victimization most prevalent in these locations, and (c) determining whether the forms of victimization vary by gender across different locations. In a sample of 278 third through fifth graders, gender differences were examined across physical, relational, and cyber victimization. Findings indicate that physical and relational victimization are likely to occur in similar locations, with the playground and home noted as frequent locations. However, cyber victimization was reported as occurring at home and on the bus. Several notable gender differences emerged when examining these locations by the form of victimization. Findings suggest that encouraging adults both within and outside of the school environment to collaborate in their efforts to prevent and intervene with peer victimization may be particularly useful. Specific ways to improve adult training efforts are discussed.

  • Rural School-Based Mental Health Services: Parent Perceptions of Needs and
           Barriers
    • Authors: van Vulpen K; Habegar A, Simmons T.
      Pages: 104 - 111
Abstract: AbstractThe benefits of school-based mental health services have been supported in prior research and literature. Studies have shown that approximately one in five youths in schools today have diagnosable mental health disorders. However, research has identified that close to 70 percent of those youths do not receive the services they need. This gap in care has a significant impact on the academic, social, and emotional well-being of youths. Parent involvement is essential in bridging services. However, parents often face barriers in accessing mental health care for their child. The aim of this study was to explore parent perceptions of needs and barriers to school-based mental health services. This exploratory study included 607 parent and guardian respondents. Findings showed that parents were overwhelmingly in support of schools being involved in addressing the mental health needs of students. Anxiety, depression, and bullying were the top emotional and behavioral issues that parents recognized as the main challenge for their child. Lack of parent support, understanding that mental health issues even exist in youths, and lack of supportive school programs were identified as key factors that place youths at risk of not receiving the services they need.

Abstract: AbstractAlthough it is well understood that relationships are linked to healthy development and academic success, research on socialization during recess is limited. From the conceptual framework of belonging, an array of established measures was used to create an online anonymous survey specific to recess. This survey includes modified scales for belongingness, affect, and victimization and discrete items about the social and physical setting. The survey was completed by 520 students from grades 4 through 8. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses revealed an excellent fit of the belongingness scale to the data. Victimization related inversely to belongingness and positive affect and predicted negative affect and low belongingness. The article concludes with implications and recommendations for researchers and school-based professionals.
