  • Partnerships for Prosperity: A Need for Social Workers in the Early
Childhood Development Centers and Schools of the Eastern Cape, South
           Africa
    • Authors: Schmidt K.
      Pages: 199 - 210
Abstract: Quality education is acknowledged as an important investment in supporting the healthy development of South Africa’s children and in the fight against poverty. This article argues that quality education in South Africa should be supported by a team of professionals who work together in a classroom setting to support students from disadvantaged backgrounds. As one of the professions primarily concerned with issues of social justice, poverty, and development, social work is ideally suited to such a setting. This article presents findings from a project that was a joint initiative between the University of Fort Hare (UFH) Department of Social Work; the UFH Early Childhood Centre of Excellence; and the Division of Social Work, Leadership, and Public Policy at Wheelock College. It aimed to investigate the need for social workers in the early childhood development centers (ECDCs) and schools of Eastern Cape, South Africa. The survey found that 94 percent of participants felt that there was a need for social workers to be actively involved in a school setting, with students needing support and guidance for a range of social challenges. In conclusion, it was found that there is a need for social workers in the ECDCs and schools of the Eastern Cape.

  • Using Photovoice to Explore School Connection and Disconnection
    • Authors: Joyce H.
      Pages: 211 - 220
Abstract: Research strongly supports school connectedness as important in promoting healthy youth development. Most of the research to date has used surveys to assess school connectedness; however, photovoice, a community-based participatory action research method, offers a unique way of engaging youth voices on their lived experiences of school connectedness. Such a method has potential to uncover areas related to connectedness that may not be captured by surveys. Few studies have incorporated photovoice to explore school connectedness among youths. This article describes a school–university collaboration that used photovoice to examine the elements of the school environment that foster connection and disconnection to school. Seven high school students took pictures over a three-week period and shared and discussed their pictures in a focus group. Data analysis examined the pictures, picture captions, and focus group discussion and six broad themes emerged: The natural environment and classes and clubs fostered school connection. The dress code policy, school building appearance and maintenance, and lunchroom elicited feelings of disconnection. Students’ perceptions of the academic environment created feelings of both connection and disconnection. The article concludes with implications for future research and practice. By going beyond traditional surveys, researchers find new aspects of school connectedness and confirm known components of connection.

  • It’s All about the Relationships”: Educators’ Rationales and
Strategies for Building Connections with Students to Prevent Exclusionary
           School Discipline Outcomes
    • Authors: Anyon Y; Atteberry-Ash B, Yang J, et al.
      Pages: 221 - 230
Abstract: This qualitative study identified nonpunitive and nonexclusionary discipline strategies used in schools with low out-of-school suspension rates. Interviews and focus groups with 198 educators from 33 low-suspending schools in a large urban district were conducted to learn more about the approaches that were essential to their school’s success. Data were analyzed with inductive and deductive approaches to identify themes regarding efficacious approaches across schools. Relationship building was noted as a key strategy in reducing exclusionary discipline outcomes and racial disparities in out-of-school suspension. Specific relationship-building strategies and the rationales behind these practices are described, including home visits, greetings, morning meetings, advisory periods, increased adult visibility in and out of school, and positive contact with families.

  • “Someone to Have My Back”: Exploring the Needs of Racially and
Ethnically Diverse Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender High School
           Students
    • Authors: Craig S; McInroy L, Austin A.
      Pages: 231 - 239
Abstract: A school-based needs assessment was undertaken with a sample of primarily Hispanic and African American lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) (N = 180) high school students in the United States. Applying grounded theory techniques, researchers conducted focus groups using a semistructured protocol that included a vision question. Five themes illuminating physical and emotional safety needs emerged after the analysis: (1) a safe place to stay, (2) safe schools and communities, (3) more than just pockets of safety, (4) someone to have my back, and (5) someone for my family. Strategies are suggested for school social workers, school counselors, and other school-based counseling professionals to address the needs of LGBT students.

      Abstract:
Authors examined teachers’ perceptions of student mental health in the context of two school-based mental health (SBMH) services delivery models. Study participants included teachers (N = 468) involved in two different models of SBMH programs (on-site therapists versus community-based therapists) in a large school district in Southeast United States. Differences regarding the two models’ effects on teachers’ perceived awareness, knowledge, and comfort related to student mental health were compared. The authors also compared mental health training received by teachers and their satisfaction with the respective models. There were statistically significant differences between the two models in teachers’ perceived awareness, knowledge, mental health training received, and satisfaction. However, teachers with in-school therapists were only comfortable accessing services for students with mental health issues and not necessarily talking with students about mental health. An SBMH services delivery model that has a dedicated therapist within the school increases the likelihood that teachers will be more aware and knowledgeable of student mental health, but more tailored trainings may be needed to better equip teachers with direct student management of mental health issues.
