  • Physician-Assisted Suicide and Voluntary Euthanasia: How Not to Die as a
           Christian
    • Authors: Cherry M.
      Pages: 1 - 16
Abstract: Christianity’s opposition to euthanasia and assisted suicide is grounded in its recognition of such actions as serious violations of the prohibition against murder and self-murder, even in cases where those individuals consent or otherwise signal their willingness to die as in cases of voluntary euthanasia. Fully to appreciate the implications of assimilating assisted death into medical practice, one must recognize the spiritual significance of killing on the physicians who euthanize patients or who aid and abet patients in killing themselves. One will also need to appreciate the spiritual importance of such actions on the patients killed. Physician-assisted suicide and voluntary euthanasia are not neutral actions. Moreover, that the patient desired or requested the killing does not change the moral character of the act or its spiritual significance. This issue of Christian Bioethics explores the implications for medicine and society as physician-assisted suicide and voluntary euthanasia are assimilated into contemporary healthcare practice.

  • Institutionalizing Inequality: The Physical Criterion of Assisted Suicide
    • Authors: Elliot D.
      Pages: 17 - 37
Abstract: The recent legalization of assisted dying in California, along with similar bills before other states, returned assisted suicide to the national spotlight. In Anglo-American dying bills, two criteria restrict eligibility for assisted suicide: (1) the uncoerced request to die (roughly, the “autonomy” criterion) and (2) severely deteriorated health of a certain kind (roughly, the “physical” criterion) from a six-month terminal illness (US jurisdictions) to severe and irreversible conditions (the Netherlands, Belgium). I argue that the physical criterion in any form violates the equality of respect and moral status of a large class of people, thereby degrading them, and I supplement this with theological considerations drawn from Thomas Aquinas. Even if the slope were not slippery and the autonomy firewall prevented Dutch-style mission creep, the physical criterion itself degrades tens of thousands of sick, disabled, and dying people by insinuating that their lives—but crucially, not other people’s—are “objectively” the sort of thing they might reasonably want to dispose of.

  • I Am My Brother’s Keeper: Communitarian Obligations to the Dying
           Person
    • Authors: Eberl J.
      Pages: 38 - 58
Abstract: Contemporary arguments concerning the permissibility of physician-assisted suicide [PAS], or suicide in general, often rehearse classical arguments over whether individual persons have a fundamental right based on autonomy to determine their own death, or whether the community has a legitimate interest in individual members’ welfare that would prohibit suicide. I explicate historical arguments pertaining to PAS aligned with these poles. I contend that an ethical indictment of PAS entails moral duties on the part of one’s community to provide effective means of ameliorating physical and existential suffering. I further elucidate how such duties have been affirmed by the Roman Catholic Church. My aim is to provide reasons why the expanding legalization of PAS should not preclude social investment in effective palliative care and the provision of a communal presence to the dying as they confront their subjectively experienced suffering.

  • Distinguishing Deference from Deferment: Assisted Suicide Is the Wrong
           Response
    • Authors: Pilkington B.
      Pages: 59 - 78
Abstract: In this article, I examine the practice of assisted suicide. I aim to do so by, first, briefly sketching a description of the current context with a particular focus on Canadian law and the prominent role that autonomy plays there. I point to resources from within the Roman Catholic tradition that serve as a counterbalance to the focus on autonomy. Second, given the prevalence of appeals to autonomy in the lives of practitioners and patients and how claims of autonomy influence considerations associated with assisted suicide, I describe the account of autonomy that is operative in these discussions and sketch an account of deference that should replace the commonplace account of autonomy. Finally, having considered popular appeals to medical assistance in dying, I ask whether cases of assisted suicide are best thought of as nonmedical cases and what appeals to traditions of thought outside of explicitly medical professions have to add to this discussion.

  • Christian Bioethics, Brain Death, and Vital Organ Donation
    • Authors: Muñoz M.
      Pages: 79 - 94
Abstract: This article reintroduces an overlooked, but uniquely Christian approach to bioethical decision-making. In 1988, John Frame applied this model in his book, Medical Ethics: Principles, Persons, and Problems. Frame’s triperspectival approach consists of applying three perspectives to every ethical question—the situational, normative, and existential perspectives. Applied to the topic of brain death and vital organ donation, the Christian can rationally conclude that brain death does not equate to the death of the human person. Thus, the Christian is faced with two immediate and opposing options. The Christian can assume a non-participatory stance justified by the imperative of the Sixth Commandment. Or, he can participate based on the principle of self-sacrifice buttressed by further biblical justification. The principle of representation and conservation of life are explored as possible scriptural/philosophical justifications for this second option.

Abstract: Public policy discussions involve certain presuppositions about ethical authorities, but disclosing ethical authorities is controversial to many. Some argue that a just society, to say nothing of public persuasion, suffers when an appeal is made to a particular worldview and the moral authority found within it. Others make bald and rash appeals to moral authorities and even consider the attachment of other reasons to them as self-undermining. In this essay, I attempt to show that moral authorities are relevant and legitimately disclosed in public ethics debates. However, for Christians in particular, I point to examples drawn from the Bible not only to show that public persuasion goes beyond mere authorial-appeal and embraces authorial-reasoning, where public advocates identify the ethical directive, but also to explain why public policy derived from that directive is sensible for everyone.
