  • Petticoat Sailor to She Crossing : A Screenwriter’s Reflections on
           Novelizing a Screenplay
    • Authors: Lock G.
Abstract: Currently, the most common critical paradigm in adaptation studies is to examine novels adapted into films or, occasionally, screenplays. By contrast, novels resulting from adapting screenplays have attracted little analysis as artefacts, and even less theorization of their creative processes. In this essay, I investigate the differences and similarities in writing screenplay and writing prose fiction by reflecting on my own experience as a screenwriter and of novelizing my own historical feature-length screenplay. I discuss the transfer of technique in working with structure, deliberations over points of view, the adjustments required to write novelistic description and to transfer the screenplay’s dialogue, as well as the challenges of working with biographical material and its effect on narrative content.

  • The History Man on Television: Ideology and Mediated Embodiment
    • Authors: Le Mahieu DL.
Abstract: In early 1981, BBC2 presented a four-part adaptation of Malcolm Bradbury’s novel The History Man published in 1975. Reviewers noted how television altered Bradbury’s satiric critique of academic radicalism. An ironic, anti-subjectivist novel became a more disturbing humanist narrative that buttressed the neo-liberal critique of Marxism. This essay attempts to show how mediated embodiment translated the abstractions of language and ideology into something more existentially specific and politically damaging. It also seeks to demonstrate how changes in the cultural landscape during the 1970s unexpectedly transformed the meaning of Bradbury’s satire when broadcast on television.

  • ‘A Soul Worth Saving’: Post-Feminist Masculinities in
Twenty-First-Century Televised Adaptations of Jane Eyre and Wuthering
           Heights
    • Authors: Fanning SE.
Abstract: This article examines the representation of masculinity in twenty-first-century television adaptations of Charlotte and Emily Brontë’s respective novels, Jane Eyre (1847) and Wuthering Heights (1847): the BBC’s 2006 four-part serialization of Jane Eyre (dir. Susanna White) and ITV’s 2009 two-part serialization of Wuthering Heights (dir. Coky Giedroyc). It argues that twenty-first-century television is affording the Brontës’ heroes, Rochester and Heathcliff, freer licence to express sensitive emotions, which are represented as a positive force of their masculinity rather than a site of frailty or impotence. By foregrounding male emotion, the adaptations are participating in wider ideological debates concerning men’s position in a post-feminist world. Importantly, by emphasizing Rochester and Heathcliff’s emotionality, the adaptations are seen to work against Brontean myths and screen legacies that have so often branded them as gothic hero-villains or rakes. This article argues that the representation of emotionally liberated masculinity, particularly in a period where notions of sexual equality and women’s rights are embedded in the social fabric, provides the adaptations with the cultural freedom to present Rochester and Heathcliff through a more sympathetic lens. These characterizations are achieved by centralizing the heroes, softening the contours of their Victorian masculinities (and those depicted in earlier adaptations), and showing that their iniquities are largely the result of their psychological suffering and victimization. In these ways, the heroes’ respective behaviours are reframed as sites of empathy, which abate, in some measure, the cloud of antipathy that has usually followed them to the screen.

  • Adapting The Quiet Man : John Ford, José Luis Guerín, and the
           Palimpsest of Place
    • Authors: Cronin J.
Abstract: In 1988, Catalan filmmaker José Luis Guerín took a film crew to the village of Cong in the West of Ireland. Cong was the site of the filming of John Ford’s adaptation of Irish writer Walsh’s story, ‘The Quiet Man’, thirty-seven years previously. Guerin’s resulting essay film, Innisfree (1990), is an adaptation of Ford’s The Quiet Man (1952) and a commentary on the relationship between Ford’s film and Cong. Situating Guerín’s work within a series of adaptive relations, this article argues that Guerín’s controversial film is best understood as an adaptation that explores the palimpsestuous nature of artistic and cultural adaptation. Guerín’s adaptation elucidates elided layers within both Ford’s adaptation of Walsh and Ford’s cultural vision, and posits Ford’s film as an integral part of the palimpsest of place. Guerín’s work enacts the meeting and mating of (un)related parts in artistic and cultural adaptation. As such, Innisfree prompts exploitation of the under-realized properties of the discourse of palimpsestuousness in relation to adaptation.

  • From Madame Bovary to Ryan’s Daughter : Literary, Cultural, and
           Historical Palimpsests
    • Authors: Park-Finch H.
Abstract: This article examines Ryan’s Daughter, Robert Bolt and David Lean’s transformative screen adaptation of Flaubert’s Madame Bovary (1857), and investigates the film’s treatment of history and its generation of meaning, suggesting that when released in 1970, it was ahead of its time in terms of collaborative, intertextual, and cultural-historical palimpsestuous adaptation. Although intended to be a loose adaptation of Madame Bovary, a relational reading of the screenplay and the film shows palimpsestuous emergence of themes, subthemes, and characters not only from the source text but also from Hardy’s Far From the Madding Crowd and the uprisings of 1848 in France and 1916 in Ireland. In addition, it is argued that the ghostly presence of Flaubert and Madame Bovary haunted the film and its authors and was a significant factor in the fashioning of a diegetic, transcultural adaptation that, having been largely overlooked and disparaged for over four decades, deserves to be critically reappraised and recognized as a powerful and dynamic adaptation and reinvention of Flaubert’s classic novel.

  • The Wild Palms in a New Wave: Adaptive Gleaning and the Birth of the
           Nouvelle Vague
    • Authors: Du Graf L.
Abstract: This article explores an overlooked aspect of Agnès Varda’s pioneering La Pointe Courte (1954)—its function as a literary adaptation. La Pointe Courte was significant to the French New Wave not only in its use of American literary modernist narrative strategies but in its execution of a new model of adaptive poetics that brazenly flouted expectations of fidelity to a literary source. La Pointe Courte’s adaptation of The Wild Palms by William Faulkner—a central literary reference for French film critics after the Second World War—supplied an important, but often uncredited, blueprint for directors like Alain Resnais and Jean-Luc Godard, whose films modelled on literary modernist prose and abstracted, deliberately unfaithful filmic adaptations would be more readily recognized by critics for their originality. Varda’s analogical literary adaptation anticipated shifts in cinematic style that would echo throughout later works by directors affiliated with the Nouvelle Vague, including Godard and Resnais. This article seeks to revise how we understand the Nouvelle Vague’s origins, which, as Geneviève Sellier has argued, has all too often been told from the perspective of the masculine singular.

  • Transmedia Storytelling, Adaptation, and the Reversing of Justified
    • Authors: Graves M.
Abstract: Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens appears in a body of work penned by Elmore Leonard and a FX television series developed and produced by Graham Yost forming the Raylan Givens franchise. Despite the character’s cross-platform presence, the storytelling strategies implemented by Leonard and Yost ultimately do not represent an example of transmedia storytelling. Yet, Justified’s storytelling approach challenges normative understandings of the boundaries between transmedia storytelling and transmedia adaptation. Whereas transmedia storytelling and adaptation are typically conceptualized as fixed binaries, the interplay between Leonard’s Raylan Givens’ fiction and the FX television series illustrates a more fluid model. The strategies of narrative extension and narrative transposition utilized by Leonard and Yost resulted in the matrix of texts featuring Raylan Givens oscillating back and forth across the dividing line separating adaptation and transmedia storytelling. In this way, Justified’s storytelling approach highlights the ways in which the boundary nothing between transmedia storytelling and adaptation is porous. Moreover, as Justified’s position as a privileged adaptation increased over the course of the first season, the canonical status of a key event in the short story upon which the series is based also shifted. While Justified ultimately adapted the narrative universe of Leonard’s Raylan Givens fiction throughout the television series’ first three seasons, Leonard’s Raylan reversed this adaptational directionality by adhering to the storyline depicted in the series. Hence, Raylan occupies a dual position as both a source text and an adaptation in a way that illustrates how the ascendancy of an adapted text can shift the adaptational directionality within a franchise, thereby becoming the dominant version of a narrative universe.

  • Post-Colonialism From Within: Repoliticisation and Depoliticisation in Ifa
Isfansyah’s Adaptation of Ahmad Tohari’s The Dancer
    • Authors: Setiawan D.
Abstract: Indonesia is largely invisible in adaptation studies and post-colonial film adaptation. As with many post-colonial countries, Indonesia has suffered from a long conflict between the military forces and civil society since its independence in 1945. This struggle is reflected in a novel entitled The Dancer written by Ahmad Tohari during the Suharto era and its film adaptation with the same title by Ifa Isfansyah in the post-Suharto era. Using the political theory of depoliticisation, I argue that the adaptation represents the spirit of repoliticisation of the early post-Soeharto Indonesia while concurrently offering a distinctive type of depoliticisation typical of the current era. Not only does the study try to shift attention from Anglo-American and Commonwealth film adaptations, but it also offers an alternative to the homogenising discourse of the Centre (the West) and Periphery (the East) and its derivative post-colonial adaptation theories.
