  • From Reverential to ‘Radical’ Adaptation: Reframing John le Carré as
‘Quality’ Television Brand from A Perfect Spy (BBC 2, 1987) to The
           Night Manager (BBC 1, 2016)
    • Authors: Oldham J.
      Pages: 285 - 304
Abstract: This article explores shifts in how John le Carré’s novels have been interpreted as prestige television adaptations, with A Perfect Spy (BBC 2) and The Night Manager (BBC 1) as central case studies. It examines changes in how the author’s profile has been mobilised, and more broadly what the differences between these adaptations reveal about the production cultures that created them and the changing international landscape in which such dramas have been developed. Firstly, A Perfect Spy is analysed as an in-house BBC production which utilises the characteristics of heritage drama to portray a crisis in the traditional spy hero of the John Buchan mould, providing an intimate view of a man destroyed by contradictory inheritances. Yet I argue that the adherence to heritage resulted in an overtly reverential adaptation, abandoning the novel’s formally experimental features and blunting much of its impact. This is contrasted with The Night Manager, developed within an increasingly globalised independent production sector by members of le Carré’s family with BBC at a greater remove. This serial, described by its production team as a ‘radical’ adaptation, breaks free of the overt heritage imagery of prior le Carré adaptations with a focus on the glamorous jet-setting super-rich, even as the theme of inheritance seems more relevant than ever at a production level. I explore the impact of this on decisions to rewrite the narrative and impose a more heroic ending, thereby rejecting the moral ambiguity with which le Carré had long been associated.

  • ‘Tired of Taking Sides’: Repressive Tolerance in Mira Nair’s The
           Reluctant Fundamentalist
    • Authors: Smith E; Ross H.
      Pages: 305 - 321
Abstract: While Mohsin Hamid’s 2007 novel, The Reluctant Fundamentalist explicitly undertakes to tell ‘the story of a man’s encounter with capitalism as practiced at the very beginning of the twenty-first century’, Mira Nair’s 2012 film adaptation elides the material concerns of the novel with the imperatives of cultural tolerance. This essay examines the formal effects as well as the political and ethical implications of Nair’s revisionary message of tolerance alongside Wendy Brown’s recent critique of the latter as the discursive instrument of a Foucauldian governmentality. We argue that Nair’s adaptation effects a subtle translation of the novel’s political and economic content into the phenotypical terms of culture, the naturalized, and consequently irresolvable antagonisms of which can be managed only by the sanctioned cultural practices of liberalism. In this way the film, quite unlike the novel, does not so much interrogate the imperialist presumptions of post-9/11 discourse as it does fortify and furtively extend them.

  • Mathematicians, Mysteries, and Mental Illnesses: The Stage-to-Screen
           Adaptation of Proof
    • Authors: Henke J; Schaffeld N, Voigt K.
      Pages: 322 - 337
Abstract: The aim of this article is to investigate why and how the three topics involving mathematicians, mysteries, and mental illnesses are interlinked in David Auburn’s award-winning play Proof (2000) and John Madden’s eponymous screen adaptation (2005). Based on Mikhail Bakhtin’s chronotope and Gérard Genette’s concept of transtextuality, the article will consider references to historical mathematicians, psychiatric and psychoanalytical discourses as well as media-related techniques used by the play and the film adaptation. Our objective is to shed light on Proof’s representation of a largely self-taught female mathematician who rightfully demands professional recognition. We will focus on two main questions: 1) Why do the skills of allegedly “mad mathematicians” arouse doubt once the latter are female, whereas geniality and madness are not mutually exclusive when the fabled connection is related to male scientists', and 2) What kind of insights do the spatio-temporal references of Madden’s filmic adaptation have to offer in terms of gender and science' We argue that the cinematic adaptation is less ambiguous towards the question of female authorship of the mathematical proof, but at the same time the hypertext refers to films and film genres that seem to amplify the protagonist’s mental instability. We conclude that it is precisely this juxtaposition of a female scientist performing high mathematics and the adaptation’s sometimes contradictory chronotopic frames which serves as an effective critique of gendered stereotypes of women performing maths.

  • ‘ Massacre (1934): Hollywood’s Overlooked Adaptation on the Native
           American Genocide’
    • Authors: Kennelly K.
      Pages: 338 - 351
Abstract: In 1931, Robert Gessner published Massacre: A Survey of Today’s American Indian, one of the earliest, most overlooked indictments of the Native American genocide to be adapted to the screen. Warner Bros.’ Massacre (Alan Crosland, 1934) is a dramatised version of his non-fiction account, focusing on a Sioux Indian named Joe Thunderhorse who returns to his reservation and finds it overrun by abusive government officials. When his sister is raped and kidnapped, he appeals to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, who swiftly takes up his case and helps him secure the conviction of the reservation superintendent in federal court. Massacre (1934) received little public attention upon its release. In the decades since, it has gone unexamined by scholars, aside from a few production studies that have pointed to the effects of New Deal ideology and Hays Office censorship in manufacturing the film’s simplistically triumphant conclusion. So far, no scholar has undertaken an adaptation studies approach to determine precisely how much of the book’s anti-government criticism the film retains. While its ending diverges from Gessner’s conclusion that the government remained unresponsive to Native Americans’ pleas for justice, this should not eclipse the ways in which Massacre boldly conveys the author’s unprecedented attack on the starvation, extortion, disease, and physical and sexual abuse perpetrated by the federal government’s Bureau of Indian Affairs.

  • ‘The Ultimate Version of Who You are Now’: Performing the
           Gentleman Spy
    • Authors: Moffat K; Bond M.
      Pages: 352 - 368
Abstract: ‘If you’re prepared to adapt and learn, you can transform’, superspy Harry Hart (Colin Firth) declares to his working-class protégé Eggsy Unwin (Taron Egerton) in Kingsman: The Secret Service (Twentieth Century Fox, 2015).11 The transformation Harry advocates is a jettisoning of Eggsy’s working-class outlook, clothing, and mannerisms in order to become a gentleman spy. Through focusing on the figure of the gentleman spy and his performance of masculinity in Kingsman and the graphic novel on which it is based, Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons’s The Secret Service (2012), we unpack two aspects of adaptation. Firstly, we examine the ways in which the gentleman spy trope is transposed from the graphic novel to the screen, answering the call from adaptation scholars such as Linda Hutcheon, Thomas Leitch, and Deborah Cartmell and Imelda Whelehan to broaden the adaptation discussion by moving beyond what Leitch terms the ‘literature on screen’ paradigm (64). It is important to consider ‘material from print journalism, franchise characters, television series, comic books, video games, and toys’ (Leitch 64) in order to ‘challeng[e] the comforts of disciplinary integrity’ (Cartmell and Whelehan 4). Furthermore, we contend that while the staples of the spy narrative remain constant in both texts, the graphic novel satirises elements of the genre while the film oscillates between homage and pastiche.

  • A ‘Game of Patience’: Fidelity and Grant Gee’s Patience
           ( After Sebald ) (2012)
    • Authors: Brown A.
      Pages: 369 - 378
Abstract: The notion of ‘fidelity’ in adaptation studies is still contentious, though recent critical attention has renewed interest in the concept’s potential usefulness. This article turns to André Bazin’s essay ‘Le Journal d’un curé de campagne and the Stylistics of Robert Bresson’ (1951) to describe not only a more nuanced notion of what fidelity in adaptation might look like, but also to offer an alternative sense of the field’s origins, often located George Bluestone’s Novels into Film (1957). To illustrate this form of fidelity in adaptation, I examine Grant Gee’s Patience (After Sebald) (2012), which takes as its subject W.G. Sebald’s The Rings of Saturn (1995). By mimicking, modeling, and magnifying the effects of a careful, patient attention to Sebald’s many-layered text, I argue, Gee demonstrates what Bazin might call ‘the novel so to speak multiplied by film’ (142).
