  • Romeo and Juliet for Two : Shakespeare During the Financial Crisis in
           Greece
    • Authors: Yannakopoulou V.
      Pages: 141 - 158
Abstract: AbstractThe Greeks have appropriated Shakespeare for a vast array of reasons, including resorting to him in times of need, the recent financial crisis being one such time. In December 2012, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet premiered in the 3rd Low Budget Festival at the Michalis Kakogiannis Foundation. The performance, tellingly titled Romeo and Juliet for 2, featuring only two actors impersonating all the characters of the play, offered the obvious benefit of drastically cutting down expenses. At the same time, though, what it lacked in extravagance was compensated for in creativity. The performance combined features from Grotowski’s poor theatre and the carnivalesque. The particular production is indicutive of a trend towards low budget productions, the need for laughter in the face of adversity, and a trend even if minoritarian, to respond to the seclusion and despair that stem from the crisis with collective interactive ventures and artistic creativity.

  • Always Crashing in the Same Car: Shakespeare, Ballard, and Appropriation
    • Authors: Hansen A.
      Pages: 159 - 175
Abstract: AbstractIn 1974, J.G. Ballard published his novel Concrete Island. This remarkable account of an architect’s survival after a car accident on a bleak patch of land demarcated by motorway furniture and flyovers, is, among other things, a reworking, adaptation, or appropriation of The Tempest: the Swan of Avon meets the Sage of Shepperton. But why tell this story using this precursor then' Answering such questions must involve moving beyond tracing the contiguities and discontinuities between the novel and the play. Instead, this article will do that but partly as a way to address methodological issues about reading Shakespearean appropriations historically; that is, focussing as much on our moment of re-reading as on Ballard’s moment of revision. So even as we think about what might have been the aims or effects of such an appropriation in the mid-1970s, we might also consider how we read it in the 2010s. Can we historicize our own readings of Shakespearean appropriation'

(2012): Historicizing Adaptation in an Age of Digital Placelessness
    • Authors: Pittman L.
      Pages: 176 - 191
Abstract: AbstractWith its substantial record of film and televisual productions, Henry V serves as a case study for reading adaptation historically. The advent of digital distribution and streaming have complicated, however, the ways in which the historical context of an adaptation may be accessed and examined. A recent adaptation, the 2012 Henry V directed by Thea Sharrock and aired as part of the BBC’s The Hollow Crown broadcast, demands a methodological expansion to account for digital placelessness. Produced within the framework of the Cultural Olympiad that coincided with both the London Olympics and the Queen’s Jubilee, the Hollow Crown Henry V provokes questions about the status of multicultural Britain in the third millennium. The film does so in ways that invoke both the dynamics of ethnic identity endemic to its country of production origin—the United Kingdom—as well as to motifs present in the visual lexicon of its wider international market—especially the United States. The casting of Paterson Joseph as the Duke of York manifests fissures in these local and international histories. That the Duke of York is played by the only actor of colour in the film burdens the role with new pressures of representation and interacts in troubling ways with the policies of multiculturalism in the United Kingdom as well as the trope of the Magical Negro in Hollywood filmmaking. Pursuing these twinned contexts facilitates a reconsideration of how a historical methodology determines its points of reference and pursues the ethical in adaptative artworks.

  • ‘Shining the Light on Women’: Recreating the Comedies in Matías
           Piñeiro’s Film Adaptations of Shakespeare
    • Authors: Burnett M.
      Pages: 192 - 209
Abstract: AbstractMatías Piñeiro’s Rosalinda (2010), an adaptation of As You Like It, Viola (2013), an adaptation of Twelfth Night, and La Princesa de Francia (2015), an adaptation of Love’s Labour’s Lost, represent a ‘Shakespeare-ida’ (trilogy) that foregrounds Shakespeare’s female characters. In all three filmic titles, a single persona is highlighted, suggesting a directorial tilt away from the thematic and towards the subjective, with women characters being lent a centralizing significance through an emphasis on gendered spaces, female bodies, and expressions of same-sex desire. Accessing Shakespeare thus, the films place a new imaginative spin on some of the central motifs of the comedies and purposefully invite engagement with performance-centred actions and plot lines. Part of this project involves interrogating the conventional endings of the comedies, and the trilogy is equally interested in testing and exposing expected generic conclusions. More broadly, the ‘Shakespeare-ida’ demonstrates how Shakespeare functions either as extract/abbreviation or in multiple combinations. Working through a range of texts, and combining texts, the trilogy affords enabling representations and new Shakespearean applications.

  • Crowding out Dover ‘Cliff’ in Korol Lir
    • Authors: Ashby R.
      Pages: 210 - 229
Abstract: AbstractFor a whole host of critics, the 1970 Russian film version of King Lear (Korol Lir) directed by Grigori Kozintsev represents the pinnacle of Shakespeare on film. Yet the film infamously cuts perhaps the most famous scene of the play—the scene at Dover cliff, in which Edgar leads the blinded Gloucester to an imaginary precipice and improvises a sublime poetic portrait of everyday plebeian life, before stepping aside to watch Gloucester take an undignified pratfall onto the flat stage. This absence has been taken by some critics to be paradigmatic of the inability of conventional film to recreate the fluidity of early-modern stage space. Yet critics have been too ready to suppose that the absence of the Dover cliff scene from Korol Lir is testament to the limits of film and not to its opportunities. Drawing on the diary that Kozintsev kept while filming Korol Lir—published under the title King Lear: The Space of Tragedy—and the work of Siegfried Kracauer, I contend that the Dover cliff scene is absent from Korol Lir, not simply because it is ‘unfilmable’, but because it is redundant: Kozintsev can use the photo-realist space of film to actualize the vision of everyday life forged by Edgar in any frame he wishes. In his bid to capture a wider social reality than is possible on stage, I contend that Kozintsev makes particular use of crowd scenes, from the opening moments of the film all the way to its bloody dénouement.

  • Indifference and Repetition: Rehearsing Shakespeare in
           Piñeiro’s Viola
    • Authors: Garrison JS; Berg H.
      Pages: 230 - 244
Abstract: AbstractViola (Dir. Piñeiro) offers a complex adaptation of Shakespeare’s work in order to explore the interplay between repetition and romantic desire. This interplay becomes especially crucial as the film re-imagines the initial meeting between Olivia and Cesario in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, a scene that Piñeiro depicts in several different contexts within his film. In its 65-minute running time, Viola extrapolates Shakespeare’s scene into an extended contemplation of how rehearsal plays a critical role in the social sphere, both heightening desire to drive romantic interest while also threatening to annul that desire. By interleaving elements and language from multiple plays, Viola ultimately adapts a Shakespearean trope where repeated rehearsal—crucial to the development of a convincing performance on the stage—reduces romantic desire to a habitual routine of action and reaction in the social sphere.

  • Witches and Their Power and Agency in Brett Bailey’s Macbeth (2014)
    • Authors: Wong KK.
      Pages: 262 - 283
Abstract: AbstractIn 2014, South African playwright Brett Bailey and Belgian composer Fabrizio Cassol gave the world a contemporary operatic version of Macbeth set in the eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). We cannot simply call it an adaptation; rather, it is an adaptation based on a (fictional) performance of Verdi’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Building upon the lyricism of the Three Weird Sisters in Shakespeare’s Macbeth and the chorus of witches in Verdi’s Macbeth, this article discusses how Bailey’s production, through underscoring and converging upon the vocal and physical presence of the chorus of witches, addresses the on-going, and yet hidden, ethnic and military conflicts in the DRC fed by greed and corruption of multinational corporations and regional governments and generals, and demonstrates how this production and its mise-en-scène invite local and global interpretations and responses.

  • Disruptive Adaptation: Transfiguring Shakespeare in Humphrey
           Jennings’s Fires Were Started
    • Authors: Hart M.
      Pages: 245 - 261
Abstract: AbstractBritish filmmakers drew heavily upon the Shakespearean corpus during the Second World War. These films, often nationally funded propaganda pieces, usually positioned Shakespeare as a marker of British cultural superiority over Nazi Germany. One propaganda film, Humphrey Jennings’s Fires Were Started, however, questions that positioning. Jennings, I argue, disruptively adapts Shakespeare in order to critique the same British culture that defined its superiority through the Bard.
