  • The English Aristocracy and Mesne Feudalism in the Late Middle Ages*
    • Authors: Ross J.
      Pages: 1027 - 1059
Abstract: Historians have generally argued that the feudal system in the later Middle Ages in England had declined into obsolescence, at least as far as the aristocracy were concerned, and little has been written in the last half-century on the subject. Yet not only were the greater landowners assiduous in keeping records of tenants holding land from them by knight’s service, serjeanty and socage, but evidence from these sources suggests that feudal rights and duties remained important. Revenues from feudal incidents (honorial courts, escheats, wardships and feudal aids) were fluctuating but often lucrative sources of income, though they had declined from thirteenth-century heights and were subject in the later fourteenth and fifteenth century to both political fluctuations and variability in quality of lordship. Lords also continued to insist on the personal performance of homage; the numbers involved, the high-status buildings in which the ceremony was performed (usually before important witnesses) and the solemnity of the ceremony itself suggest that homage was more important in the later Middle Ages than is generally acknowledged. Feudal tenants, indeed, played a significant part in aristocratic affinities. Defined in narrow terms as a system of relationships, feudalism was not moribund.

  • How Protestant was the Elizabethan Regime'*
    • Authors: Younger N.
      Pages: 1060 - 1092
Abstract: Recent historiography on the Elizabethan regime has argued that it was strongly dominated by convinced Protestants, most prominently Lord Burghley, the earl of Leicester and Sir Francis Walsingham. This article argues that this consensus glosses over many important political figures whose religion was much more conservative, who were often sympathetic to Catholics and in several cases were probably essentially Catholic themselves. These individuals, although prominent at the time, have been seriously neglected by historians, often because of the nature of the archival record. The article surveys the prominence of such men throughout the reign, examining their religious inclinations. It goes on to assess the extent of their influence on the politics of the period, arguing that they were capable of mounting major political initiatives, and indeed scored several important successes against more strongly Protestant policies. Likewise, it argues that very often forward Protestant policies met with failure, in which the conservatives’ influence can often be detected. Finally, it discusses some of the consequences of these findings, proposing a more complex picture of Elizabethan politics, in which religious division and indeed conflict was a significant factor, and arguing that the Elizabethan regime should therefore be seen as a much less united and univocal entity than is often assumed.

  • Corruption and Contractors in the Atlantic World, 1754–1763*
    • Authors: Graham A.
      Pages: 1093 - 1119
Abstract: This article examines the reality of corruption among contractors in North America during the French and Indian War (1754–63), one of the key grievances in the prologue to the Revolution, and argues that contemporaries were mistaken about its ubiquity. The letters of financial contractors remitting money to their agents show that they saw it as a patriotic duty rather than just a commercial transaction, and frequently went beyond the letter of the contract in order to maintain the flow of money to the British army in North America. Why did corruption therefore appear so dangerously prevalent' Military finance was inherently complex and opaque, and open to misinterpretation. Although shared political loyalties held together the contractors and their agents and helped to police their behaviour, other imperial and colonial components of the British state had different priorities and therefore saw the public service in different ways. Disagreements over military finance were misconstrued by both sides as obstruction, and as evidence of outright corruption, which served as a polemical tool to discredit alternative views of the public interest. Corruption therefore appeared so prevalent, and obtained such political power, because of misunderstandings and contests within the fabric of the British state about the best direction for public policy.

  • From the Tuileries to Twickenham: The Orléans, Exile and Anglo-French
           Liberalism, c.1848–1880*
    • Authors: Stammers T.
      Pages: 1120 - 1154
Abstract: Between the 1848 Revolution and the Franco-Prussian War, the Orléans dynasty relocated to the suburbs of London. For the Orléans as for the Bourbons and the Bonapartes, exile was a fundamental aspect of nineteenth-century royalism. Deprived of the French throne, Louis-Philippe’s heirs nonetheless remained highly engaged with the political culture of Victorian Britain and the British Empire. Studying the interactions between the Orléans and their British hosts challenges existing narratives about the stagnation and decline of the Orleanist cause after 1848 as well as the divergence between French and English variants of liberalism. Taking as its focus Henri, duc d’Aumale, and his nephew Philippe, comte de Paris, this article charts the family’s evolving ambitions, divided between building a new home in Britain, and keeping the prospects open for a possible restoration in Paris. The Orléans engagement with Britain is traced through several channels. Firstly, through their participation in British elite sociability, thanks to their devoted champion and neighbour in Twickenham, Frances, Countess Waldegrave. This London hostess played a central role in facilitating the family’s interests and favourable press coverage. Secondly, through the Orléans’ engagement with global politics in the mid-nineteenth century, in which British perspectives helped to reshape their own vision of France’s imperial future. Thirdly, through their exploration of British parliamentary debates and the problems of industrial society. Far from simply prolonging the vision of the July monarchy, this article suggests that the Orléans’ engagement with questions of mass politics was more dynamic and extensive than previously believed. Although the revised and vicarious vision of liberalism formulated by the Orléans during the London exile was never applied after the family returned to France in 1870–71, it continued to inform and constrain the subsequent development of French monarchist politics.

  • The Trial of Neville Heath, the Popular Press, and the Construction of the
Memory of the Second World War in Britain, 1945–1946*
    • Authors: Grant M.
      Pages: 1155 - 1177
Abstract: This article uses the press coverage of the sensational 1946 trial of Neville Heath for murder as a case-study for exploring how the memory of the Second World War in Britain was constructed in the immediate post-war period. Historians of Europe have described how painful narratives of occupation and defeat were suppressed, and more positive memories of timeless national values highlighted, in order to aid the reconstruction of national identity and gender relations. Although Britain had not experienced such upheaval, the nation did face troubling questions about the consequences of the war for criminality and violence. The popular press, however, discussed such issues in ways which did not call into question the central narratives of the ‘people’s war’. The trial of Heath highlights how questions concerning violence in Britain could be resolved: whereas post-war violent crime was understood in terms of short-term social dislocation rather than the psychological impact of the war, Heath’s sadistic violence was discussed using language which made it readily comparable to the German and Japanese war crimes being featured at the same time. As such, Heath was understandable as an individual, pathologised ‘type’ rather than as a symbol of the post-war British veteran.
