  • The Engel Curves of Non-Cooperative Households
    • Authors: Chiappori P; Naidoo J.
      Pages: 653 - 674
Abstract: We provide a set of necessary and sufficient conditions for a system of Engel curves to have been generated by a non-cooperative model of family behaviour. These conditions fully characterise the local behaviour of household-level consumption in the cross-section, i.e., as a function of total income and distribution factors. In this setting, any demand system compatible with a non-cooperative model is also compatible with a collective model, but the converse is not true. We describe how these nested conditions may be tested using standard instrumental-variables strategies.

  • I (Don’t) Like You! But Who Cares' Gender Differences in
           Same-Sex and Mixed-Sex Teams
    • Authors: Gerhards L; Kosfeld M.
      Pages: 716 - 739
Abstract: We study the effect of likeability on women’s and men’s team behaviour in a lab experiment. Extending a two-player public goods game and a minimum effort game by an additional pre-play stage that informs team members about their mutual likeability, we find that female teams lower their contribution to the public good in the event of low likeability, while male teams achieve high levels of co-operation irrespective of the level of mutual likeability. In mixed-sex teams, both women’s and men’s contributions depend on mutual likeability. Similar results are found in the minimum effort game. Our results offer a new perspective on gender differences in labour market outcomes: mutual dislikeability impedes team behaviour, except in all-male teams.

  • The Political Economy of Liberal Democracy
    • Authors: Mukand S; Rodrik D.
      Pages: 765 - 792
Abstract: This paper develops a taxonomy of political regimes that distinguishes between three sets of rights—property rights, political rights and civil rights. The truly distinctive nature of liberal democracy is the protection of civil rights (equal treatment by the state for all groups) in addition to the other two. The paper shows how democratic transitions that are the product of a settlement between the elite (who care mostly about property rights) and the majority (who care about political rights), generically fail to produce liberal democracy. Instead, the emergence of liberal democracy requires low levels of inequality and weak identity cleavages.

  • Firms’ Price, Cost and Activity Expectations: Evidence from Micro
           Data
    • Authors: Boneva L; Cloyne J, Weale M, et al.
      Pages: 555 - 586
Abstract: Firms’ expectations play a central role in modern macroeconomic models, but little is known empirically about them. Using panel data on manufacturing firms’ expectations about prices and wage rates, new orders, employment and unit costs for the United Kingdom, we document a range of stylised facts about firms’ expectations and their determinants. There is wide dispersion of expectations across firms. Firms' expectations are influenced by both firm-specific factors and macroeconomic factors. We find a significant connection between past expected price and wage increases and their out-turns. Firms’ expectations are, however, clearly not rational.

  • Group Consumption with Caring Individuals
    • Authors: Cherchye L; Cosaert S, Demuynck T, et al.
      Pages: 587 - 622
Abstract: We propose a novel approach to model joint consumption decisions of individuals who care for each other. The model encompasses a continuum of group consumption models situated between the fully co-operative model and the non-cooperative model without caring. We also define a measure for the degree of intragroup cooperation that quantifies how close the observed group behaviour is to fully co-operative behaviour. Following a revealed preference approach, we derive testable implications of the model for empirical data. We use our model to analyse decisions made by children in an experimental setting.

  • Fiscal Policy with Limited-Time Commitment
    • Authors: Clymo A; Lanteri A.
      Pages: 623 - 652
Abstract: We propose a theory of optimal fiscal policy with ‘Limited-Time Commitment’. In our framework, successive governments have commitment only over finite, overlapping horizons. We first show that key results in the ‘Full Commitment’ literature can often be sustained with a single period of commitment. We then solve a calibrated model in which ‘Limited-Time Commitment’ fails to implement the ‘Full Commitment’ policy, and find that one year (three years) of commitment recovers one-third (two-thirds) of the welfare losses relative to ‘No Commitment’. Finally, we investigate the trade-off between commitment and flexibility in response to shocks.

  • Electoral Accountability and Responsive Democracy

Abstract: We consider elections with hidden preferences and hidden actions, in which neither voters nor politicians can commit to future choices. When politicians are highly office motivated, they respond by choosing high policies to signal that they are above average, and some below-average politicians must randomise between choosing policies near their ideal points and mimicking above-average politicians by choosing high policies. If voter preferences are increasing, then elections deliver positive outcomes; but if voter preferences are single peaked, then politicians overshoot in the first period. Electoral incentives shift to sanctioning, rather than selection, as office motivation becomes large.

  • Friendship and Female Education: Evidence from a Field Experiment in
           Bangladeshi Primary Schools
    • Authors: Hahn Y; Islam A, Patacchini E, et al.
      Pages: 740 - 764
Abstract: We randomly assigned 115 primary schools in Bangladesh to one of two settings: children studying in groups with friends and children studying in groups with peers. The groups consisted of four people with similar average cognitive abilities and household characteristics. While the achievement of male students was not affected by the group assignment, low-ability females with friends outperformed low-ability females working with peers by roughly 0.4 standard deviations of the test score distribution. This is not due to the fact that friends tend to be of the same gender or to a higher frequency of interactions among friends.

  • Competitive Preferences and Ethnicity: Experimental Evidence from
           Bangladesh
    • Authors: Siddique A; Vlassopoulos M.
      Pages: 793 - 821
Abstract: We investigate whether aversion to competing against members of the ethnically dominant group could be a contributing factor to the persistent disadvantageous socioeconomic position of ethnic minorities. We conducted a lab-in-the-field experiment in rural Bangladesh, randomly assigning participants into groups with different ethnic composition. We find that the ethnic minority group (Santal) are less likely to compete in groups where they are a numerical minority than when all competitors are co-ethnic, whereas the reverse is true for the ethnic majority group (Bengali). Further analysis suggests that differences in social power and status underpin these differences in preferences for interethnic competition.

  • Firm Reputation, Innovation and Employee Startups
    • Authors: Zábojník J.
      Pages: 822 - 851
Abstract: This article studies how a firm’s reputation for rewarding innovative employees affects innovation and startup creation. In any Pareto-efficient equilibrium of the repeated game, low-value innovations are developed in-house, while high-value innovations are developed in startups. When distributions of ideas are ordered by simple cases of first- or second-order stochastic dominance, the firm has a preference for an extreme distribution. The article also characterises the optimal relational contract and workers’ incentives to invest in innovation. The model’s predictions are consistent with a broad set of observed regularities regarding the creation of employee startups.
