  • Socio-cultural innovations of the Final Umm an-Nar period (c.2100–2000
BCE) in the Oman peninsula: new insights from Ra's al-Jinz RJ-2
    • Authors: Valentina M. Azzarà; Alexandre P. De Rorre
Abstract: The Early Bronze Age site of RJ-2, located close to the coastal village of Ra's al-Jinz on the eastern Omani coast (Niyabat Ra's al-Hadd), was the focus of archaeological investigations for over two decades. The latest campaigns of excavation unearthed an architectural complex (Building XII) dated to the very end of the Umm an-Nar period (Final UaN, c.2100–2000 BCE), previously attested on site by poorly preserved remains. This paper presents the remains explored during the most recent fieldwork, focusing on the stratigraphic-structural sequence and the spatial layout. It also considers the transformations affecting structural evidence and material culture during this period, at both local and regional level, highlighting their significance for a comprehensive assessment of the last occupations related to the Early Bronze Age in south-eastern Arabia. The paper concludes by showing how the Final Umm an-Nar phase represents an age of substantial socio-cultural innovations, which most likely shaped the transition towards the following Wadi Suq period.

  • Large Kombewa flake production in north Oman
    • Authors: Amir Beshkani; Tara Beuzen-Waller, Stéphanie Bonilauri, Guillaume Gernez
      Pages: 125 - 137
Abstract: In this paper we present the results of surveys carried out in February 2016 along a palaeo-drainage system near the village of Bisyah. We report first on the geological prospection, which was our main goal, and then present our discovery of the only known localities in north Oman of large Kombewa flake production (>10 cm up to 20 cm). Among the scatter of artefacts, we found cores and large Kombewa flakes with two opposed bulbs of percussion, a technology that had not been known in this region until now. In spite of the local features, the typo-technological traits of the artefacts suggest that at least part of them resemble in some way the Acheulean techno-complex, but there are still many questions remaining on the age of these artefacts.

  • An illustrated prehistory of the Jubbah oasis: Reconstructing Holocene
occupation patterns in north-western Saudi Arabia from rock art and
           inscriptions
    • Authors: Maria Guagnin; Ceri Shipton, Moudhy al-Rashid, Fares Moussa, Sarah El-Dossary, Mona Bin Sleimah, Abdullah Alsharekh, Michael Petraglia
      Pages: 138 - 152
Abstract: A systematic survey of rock art and associated archaeological features in the Jubbah oasis provides evidence of Holocene occupation from the early Holocene to the present. In total 1249 panels with rock art and inscriptions, and 159 archaeological sites, were recorded on twelve different jebels. Analyses of rock art content and engraving stratigraphy indicate that the iconic Jubbah style had a long tradition among pre-pastoral hunters and continued to be used by early herders. We also identify a distinct body of rock art that pre-dates the Jubbah style and may be associated with a nearby Epipalaeolithic site. Our systematic dataset identifies a body of Bronze Age rock art that is further supported by the material culture and radiocarbon dates obtained from the remains of disturbed cairns. The rock art in Jubbah appears to have been created throughout the Holocene occupation of the oasis and similarities in the representation of animals, choice of location and content of rock art scenes are evident from the Bronze Age to the early modern period, and perhaps into the twentieth century. Moreover, rock art and epigraphy suggest that occupation phases in Jubbah were sustained long enough for the repeated development of unique local characteristics throughout the Holocene.

  • ‘Gates’: a new archaeological site type in Saudi Arabia
    • Authors: David Kennedy
      Pages: 153 - 174
Abstract: The availability of high-resolution satellite imagery of Saudi Arabia on publicly available platforms such as Google Earth and Bing Maps has been transformational for archaeology. Within just a few years tens of thousands of sites previously unrecorded and scarcely known to the academic world have been mapped. Especially rich in sites are the successive lava fields (harret) stretching from southern Syria through Jordan and down the west coast of the Arabian Peninsula to Yemen, and characterised by the stone-built structures known to the Bedouin as the ‘works of the old men’. Sites now being revealed include many types familiar from previous research in the wider region but also others of a form previously unknown. ‘Gates’ are one such type, found in large numbers in and around the Harret Khaybar in west-central Saudi Arabia. They are stone-built, the walls roughly made and low as with other ‘works’, but quite unlike them in form. Identification, mapping, and preliminary interpretation imply an early date in the sequence of the works—perhaps the very earliest—but no obvious explanation of their purpose can be discerned. Fieldwork is a desideratum.

  • Carnelian, agate, and other types of chalcedony: the prehistory of Jebel
           al-Ma'taradh and its semi-precious stones, Emirate of Ra's al-Khaimah
    • Authors: Vincent Charpentier; Olivier Brunet, Sophie Méry, Christian Velde
      Pages: 175 - 189
Abstract: The Jebel al-Ma'taradh and its surroundings contain exceptional deposits of lithic raw materials, including flint and chert, but especially chalcedony, agate, carnelian, and chrysoprase. These deposits were intensively exploited during the Neolithic, and some of the artefacts produced entered the trade network that included settlements on the coast and inland, sometimes as far as 300 km. During earlier periods, probably as early as the Pleistocene, only flint was used. Between the sixth and the fourth millennia, carnelian and agate were exploited to make beads, which are found in the necropolises and settlements of the UAE.

  • Rescue excavation of a third-millennium BC tomb at Al-Khubayb, Sultanate
           of Oman
    • Authors: Stephanie Döpper
      Pages: 190 - 208
Abstract: A third-millennium BC tomb was subject to a rescue excavation in connection with the construction of a new road near the village of Al-Khubayb in the Sultanate of Oman. It yielded a small number of finds, especially small metal objects that belonged to a later reuse of the tomb in the Samad period. As all diagnostic finds from the tomb date to the reuse, its architectural elements were the only indicator for the construction date of the tomb. Besides its small size and large wall thickness, which might suggest that the tomb is a transitional type between the Hafit and the Umm an-Nar periods, its separation into two chambers and its facade made of white, dressed stones, can be seen as a clue for a construction date of the tomb in the Umm an-Nar period.

  • Tell Abraq during the second and first millennia BC: site layout, spatial
           organisation, and economy
    • Authors: Peter Magee; Marc Händel, Steven Karacic, Margarethe Uerpmann, Hans-Peter Uerpmann
      Pages: 209 - 237
Abstract: Research recommenced at Tell Abraq in 2007, carried out by Bryn Mawr College with an international team in co-operation with the Sharjah Archaeology Authority. Between 2007 and 2010 fieldwork was limited to documenting sections of the previous excavations and one small sounding while our attention focused mainly on the nearby shell-midden site of Hamriya and the fortified Iron Age settlement site of Muweilah. Since 2010, large-scale excavations have been conducted which have fundamentally altered our understanding of the layout of the settlement and its economic relations during the second and first millennia BC. In this report, we detail the results of this work and present preliminary interpretations.

  • Two new inscriptions mentioning Rabbum ʾAkhṭar, a military commander of
the Sabaean king in the first half of the third century AD
    • Authors: Sarah Rijziger
      Pages: 238 - 245
Abstract: Rabbum ʾAkhṭar, known from three inscriptions so far in which he is mentioned together with at least one of his brothers, was a high-ranking official of the Sabaean king Shāʿirum ʾAwtar. Among other wars, he participated in the battle that resulted in the defeat of Shabwa, the capital of the kingdom of Ḥaḍramawt. We can now add two new inscriptions in which this man is mentioned. Here, his name Rabbum is newly confirmed, the name of his father is revealed and his being referred to, on one occasion, as ‘lord’ gives us a clue as to his social status. This paper gives an overview of the old and new data concerning this important figure of South Arabian history in the first half of the third century AD.

  • A new Nabataean funerary inscription from Dhībān, with a brief account
on Dhībān during the Nabataean period
    • Authors: Zeyad al-Salameen; Musallam Al-Rawahneh
      Pages: 246 - 253
Abstract: This paper investigates a two-line unpublished Nabataean funerary inscription found in 2016 at Dhībān, 70 km south of Amman. The inscription, which is the first known Nabataean text from this site, represents a dedication of a funerary monument, a nefesh, by a person to his deceased son. The current study includes a word-by-word discussion of the text, offering remarks on its discovery as well as a linguistic analysis of its contents. A brief account of the Nabataean occupation at Dhībān is also provided.

  • The Taymanitic onomasticon
    • Authors: F. Kootstra
      Pages: 254 - 263
Abstract: The Taymanitic inscriptions, written in the c. mid-sixth century BCE, largely consist of personal names. While personal names cannot inform us directly on the language or ethnicity of their bearers, name-giving practices do reflect a choice made by the person bestowing it on someone. This article will focus on the personal names of the inscriptions; what they can tell us about their linguistic and cultural background, and how this might inform us on the cultural heritage of the authors of the Taymanitic inscriptions.

  • Oman and late Sasanian imperialism
    • Authors: Harry Munt
      Pages: 264 - 284
Abstract: Arguments about the nature of late Sasanian imperial involvement in Oman have become quite polarised over the past few decades. Historians and archaeologists have used their different caches of evidence to suggest quite variant conclusions concerning the extent of the Sasanians’ imperial involvement in south-east Arabia and the impact that this involvement may have had on the prosperity of Omani local agriculture and the economy there. This article, however, seeks to demonstrate that the evidence of literary sources for the late pre-Islamic history of south-east Arabia, written primarily in Arabic by Muslims several centuries after the events being described, can be placed alongside other written evidence for the late Sasanian empire to suggest a picture of late Sasanian imperial involvement in Oman that is not all that far removed from the conclusions reached by many archaeologists working in the region. The article demonstrates that late Sasanian imperial interest in Oman may not have led to the intense settlement and agricultural development of the coastal plain sometimes suggested, but that there was nonetheless a significant place for Oman within Ērānšahr, the territory of the king of kings.

  • Fragments of an early Islamic Arabic papyrus from Khirbet Hamrā
           Ifdān
    • Authors: Hannah Friedman; Tasha Vorderstrasse, Rachel Mairs, Russell Adams
      Pages: 285 - 296
Abstract: Excavations in 2013 at the site of Khirbet Hamrā Ifdān in the Faynān revealed several pieces of an Arabic papyrus, the first ever found in Jordan. Although the papyrus is poorly preserved, a detailed analysis of the fragments based on parallels have suggested that it dates to the late seventh/early–mid-eighth century AD. This article discusses the papyrus fragments and places them within their papyrological and archaeological contexts.

  • Khirbat al-Mana‘iyya: an early Islamic-period copper-smelting site in
           south-eastern Wadi ‘Araba, Jordan
    • Authors: Ian W.N. Jones; Erez Ben-Yosef, Brita Lorentzen, Mohammad Najjar, Thomas E. Levy
      Pages: 297 - 314
Abstract: Recent excavations in south-eastern Wadi ‘Araba in Jordan have revealed the first early Islamic-period copper-smelting site known in the eastern side of the valley, which extends south of the Dead Sea to the Gulf of ‘Aqaba. Five test pits were excavated in 2012 at Khirbat al–Mana‘iyya, a prominent copper-smelting camp in south-eastern Wadi ‘Araba, Jordan. The results of these excavations demonstrate that the site was primarily active in the seventh–ninth century AD. Its distance from the copper sources of south-west ‘Araba suggests that its location was chosen based on proximity to wood and water resources, rather than copper ore deposits. The discovery that the site dates to the early Islamic period has implications for previous and future work in south-east ‘Araba. In particular, it challenges the common—until now—view of the region as virtually devoid of settlement during this period.

  • An early Christian Arabic graffito mentioning ‘Yazīd the
           king’
    • Authors: Younis al-Shdaifat; Ahmad Al-Jallad, Zeyad al-Salameen, Rafe Harahsheh
      Pages: 315 - 324
Abstract: This article is an edition and commentary on an early Christian Arabic inscription discovered near Qaṣr Burquʿ in northeastern Jordan. The text mentions a certain yzydw ʾl-mlk ‘Yazid the king’ and could date to the sixth or seventh century. We discuss the text's palaeography, its relevance for the history of the Arabic script, and attempt to identify the historical figure to which it refers.
