  • An examination of factors that affect user intentions toward cloud
           computing switching
    • Authors: Xiaotong Liu, Victor R. Prybutok, Edoardo Rubino
      Pages: 1 - 21
Abstract: We use the combination of two-factor theory, status quo theory and the rational choice theory as theoretical perspectives to investigate the factors that influence switching behaviour towards cloud computing services. Extended on Park and Ryoo's two-factor model, perceived cost savings, compatibility, perceived threat of privacy, and perceived threat of security are introduced to the research model. A total of 612 valid responses were used to empirically test a newly developed model. Unlike previous research, our findings show that user's switching intention to cloud services was mainly affected by expected switching benefits motivated by enablers including collaboration support, compatibility, and perceived cost savings. Additionally, perceived threat of security is a significant inhibitor whereas perceived threat of privacy is not. The integration of three theories enhances the understanding of user switching behaviour.

  • Countering grey market threat using service effort
    • Authors: Xuemei Su, Samar K. Mukhopadhyay
      Pages: 22 - 45
Abstract: Grey markets are likely when there is a significant price difference of the same product in two different markets. A grey marketer can buy the product in the low-price market and sell it in the high-price market starting an unauthorised channel. This paper studies the role of service effort in the authorised channels in fighting grey market under two scenarios. One is when the prices are not under the manufacturer's control and second, when they are. We find that the manufacturer's profit is significantly improved when he proactively adjusts the service levels in different markets. When service provision can be used in conjunction with pricing strategies, the manufacturer's profit is further improved. One surprising finding is that, when certain conditions are satisfied, the manufacturer actually benefits more from grey market than from the authorised channel in the high price market.

  • 'Breaks of gauge' in Australian railway history: the significance
           of standardisation in national infrastructures
    • Authors: Heejin Lee, Jonathan Liebenau, Vladislav V. Fomin
      Pages: 46 - 58
Abstract: Australia's railway suffered from breaks of gauge from the beginning of the systems' development in the 1850s and long after the foundation of the federation in 1901. The failure was caused by economic, social and political factors, and it brought significant consequences for each of those domains. While explaining the causes and impacts of breaks of gauge, we consider economic and technological factors in the development of the railway network. We suggest that economic considerations of Australian territories and the governance structure of the federation were the key factors causing the breaks of gauges. The consequences were significant for economic development and demonstrate the prominence of standardisation in the technological and economic development of national infrastructures. The lessons learned have implications for standardisation in developing national infrastructures.

  • Determinants of e-business usage in Malaysian service industry
    • Authors: Intan Salwani Mohamed, Govindan Marthandan
      Pages: 59 - 82
Abstract: This study examined factors determining e-business usage and its influence on business performance in the Malaysian service industry. It focuses on technological, organisational, and environmental (TOE) model to see how different characteristics of this model would predict e-business usage. Questionnaire survey method was used in collecting primary data, where samples were selected using stratified random sampling to yield 165 verified responses. In assessing drivers of e-business usage, technology competence, web functionalities, firm size, and pressure intensity were found to have significant influence on the extent of e-business usage. Among these, web functionalities appeared to be the strongest factor and had a significant positive path. It showed that higher web functionalities led to higher e-business usage. Other variables which had significant positive relationship to e-business usage include technology competence and firm size. Internationalisation scope, web technology investment costs, managerial beliefs, and regulatory support was also found to have positive relationship to e-business usage, however these relationships are not significant. Meanwhile, pressure intensity was found to have significant negative relationship to e-business usage.

  • A synthesis of expatriate competence, intelligence, adaptability,

    • Authors: Li-Yueh Lee, Phuoc-Thien Nguyen
      Pages: 83 - 103
Abstract: Based on a series of literature reviews, 27 research hypotheses were developed for further empirical testing. Using 244 overseas expatriate respondents as the sample, the research results show that cross-cultural static competences have positive influence on cross-cultural dynamic competences and cross-cultural adjustment; work role demands have a negative influence on cross-cultural dynamic competences and cross-cultural adjustment; relational skills. Perceived host attitude toward expatriates has a positive influence on expatriate adjustment; cross-cultural dynamic competences have positive influence on cross-cultural adjustment; cross-cultural dynamic competences and adjustment have a positive influence on expatriate effectiveness; and innovative work behaviour and job satisfaction have a positive influence on expatriate performance. In terms of moderating effects, expatriate intelligence and cultural adaptability strengthen the influence of cross-cultural static competences and work role demands on cross-cultural dynamic competences and adjustment; also, perceived assignment value and organisational support strengthen the influence of cross-cultural dynamic competencies and adjustment on expatriate effectiveness.
Keywords: cross-cultural dynamic competence; cross-cultural adjustment; expatriate effectiveness; non-ethnocentrism; work–role demand

Abstract: The paper aims at investigating health information technologies impacts on electronic business in quality and revenue hospitals. Specifically, first, a hospital electronic customer chain (HECC) model is built to analyse details on how health information technologies are integrated in the hospital business to improve quality and revenue. Second, the HECC model was further decomposed to derive standardised electronic business solutions. Data was collected from two groups of hospitals with succeeding on quality and revenue, respectively. Third, a comparison was conducted to investigate the electronic business implementation pattern in both quality and revenue groups. The results from two-sample t-test show that the majority of the e-business solutions of the revenue group have the average score less than or equal to that of the quality group. The findings will help hospitals to accelerate the health information technologies adoption in the hospital electronic business. Theoretical and practical implications are also presented.

  • A higher education student service quality and satisfaction model

      Pages: 129 - 145
Abstract: This study develops a model, the service quality satisfaction monitoring model (SQSMM), to examine the relationship between the industry standard 73-item Noel-Levitz student satisfaction inventory (SSI) and a new, greatly reduced four-item service quality satisfaction instrument (SQSI). The impact of students' perceptions of service quality and satisfaction related to their collegiate experience is measured by many universities using the standard 73-item Noel-Levitz SSI instrument. However, the cost of the SSI and the length of the instrument precludes its frequent use for initial assessment or ongoing monitoring to track changes. We develop and test a new service quality and student satisfaction single construct four-item instrument, SQSI, based on contextualising items drawn from other survey instruments.
