  • Study of micro channel fabrications by micromilling

      Abstract: In order to bridge the gap between high quality micro channel fabrications and micromilling processes, experimental studies have been conducted. First, single-factor experimental study has been conducted to identify the reasonable ranges of key process parameters considering the size effect in microcutting. Second, Taguchi method has been applied to conduct orthogonal experiments for the optimisation of micromilling process parameters. It shows that the importance order in sequence on the surface roughness is the axial depth of cut <i>a<SUB align="right">p</i>, the feed <i>f<SUB align="right">z</i>, and the radial depth of cut <i>a<SUB align="right">e</i>. Then, the regression equation has been introduced to predict the surface roughness according to the key process parameters. Third, three up/down micromilling modes together with two kinds of cutter entry positions have been experimentally studied. It shows the microfluidic channel is better to be micromilled by the commensurate sized micro end mills and the open-end microchannel design is preferred.

  • Fuzzy weighted geometric mean approach-based FMEA to prioritise lean
           failure modes in manufacturing industries

      Abstract: This paper presents a methodology called lean failure mode and effects analysis (LFMEA) using fuzzy weighted geometric mean for prioritising lean failure modes. Fuzzy lean priority number (FLPN) is calculated to prioritise lean failure modes using factors like occurrence, severity and detection. Fuzzy linear programming models and alpha-cut techniques are used for ranking failure modes. For defuzzification of FLPNs, alpha-level set-based centroid defuzzification method is used. Based on the FLPN values, lean tools are selected to eliminate the lean failures. The future state implemented with selected lean tools has shown encouraging results from case studies. Lead time, cycle time and non-value added time are reduced by 11.3%, 14% and 6.1% for a casting industry and 47.3%, 31.3% and 67.2% respectively for an auto components manufacturing industry. The unnecessary movements, manpower and inventory are reduced to greater levels. This selection methodology confirms positive effects on productivity improvement process.

  • Improvement of the wire compensation configuration model for improving
           part accuracy in cylindrical wire electrical discharge turning

      Abstract: Demand for complex micro-sized shape components has driven the industries on the development of a new machine and fabrication technique. One of the latest techniques is by combining a sparking electrode wire with a rotating workpiece, known as cylindrical wire electrical discharge turning (CWEDT). However, owing to the uncontrolled discharge energy, the existence of dynamic run-out and valid wire positioning compensation estimations in the CWEDT process affect its capability of producing micro-sized components. This paper proposes a new compensation configuration model for the CWEDT process that aims to improve the dimensional accuracy. The developed configuration model emphasises the way to obtain the desired diameter that can be used as the input value for positioning the electrode wire through a machine system. Sets of experimental runs were performed to confirm its validity. Analytical results show that the developed model has improved the part accuracy up to 95% and is capable of eliminating overcut error, hence, verifying its validity.

  • Promoting adaptive agility through modularity: a Chinese case

      Abstract: Organisational agility is currently a popular topic in a dynamic and uncertain environment as to the academic and practitioner communities. This paper, taking Hisense from China's manufacturing as a case, aims to reveal the building process and triggers of adaptive agility through R&D and production of Chinese flat-panel TVs from the perspective of modularity. This paper opens the black box between modularity and adaptive agility. It suggests that the adaptive systems of R&D and production are built through modularity. They can bring adaptive agilities including diversified varieties, advanced features, fast time-to-market, high quality and low cost (price). Enterprise achieves the balance of 'degree' and overall optimal performance price ratio.

  • Machining in high pressure coolant environment – a strategy to improve
           machining performance: a review

      Abstract: Machining is a commonly preferred production process. Machining with high pressure coolant, cryogenic coolant, or atomised coolant spray are the latest techniques investigated by the researchers to improve the productivity. Researchers have performed the work on various aspects of machining using high pressure coolant. Researchers have investigated effect of coolant related parameters, machining parameters, tool related parameters on surface finish, dimensional accuracy, tool wear, tool life, forces, chip morphology, tool and work piece temperature, and wear mechanism during machining of different materials. Researchers have performed the research with regard to coolant type, coolant pressure, flow rate, coolant concentration, and coolant jet direction and come up with interesting and beneficial findings. This paper presents a comprehensive literature review on high pressure coolant strategy in machining of materials with respect to various aspects. The paper presents important findings in this area and pinpoints the issues which should be investigated in future.
