  • Developing a blended learning model in an EFL class

      Abstract: The application of blended learning approach in foreign language teaching has become quite prevalent in language classes worldwide. As opposed to pure e-learning which involves only electronic media in the learning process, blended learning supplements traditional face-to-face teaching and learning environment with different kinds of technology-based instruction. The basic objective of the present study is to outline a framework of blended learning model in college English teaching applicable in China EFL class environment, and a case study was conducted to investigate its effectiveness. A total of 96 non-English major students who study intensive English at a China's key university participated in the study. The experimental group studied the target course through blended learning strategies, and their performance was evaluated through comparing the results got from a pretest, progress test and post-test, respectively, to check the effectiveness of the model. Questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were also conducted to identify students' evaluation of the blended learning model. It was observed that the participants of the study perceived the model to be useful and helpful for the improvement of their English proficiency. In addition, it was found that the participants in the experimental class received higher scores for their post-test at the end of the study. Based on the main findings, modifications have been made to the model and further suggestions and implications are provided.

  • A case study on the factors affecting Chinese adult students' English
           acquisition in a blended learning environment

      Abstract: Blended learning is a popular trend in college English acquisition for Chinese adult education. In order to study the influence of a blended learning environment to English acquisition and the factors affecting Chinese adult students' English acquisition, 100 of them who study in the School of Continuing Education of North China University of Science and Technology are selected as the research subjects, and the research instruments of questionnaire and interview are used to collect data. The study results show that the blended learning environment in some way can help learners overcome anxieties and cultivate autonomous learning abilities. In addition, those with better academic performances in English acquisition have low levels of anxieties and strong autonomous learning abilities. They use more learning strategies and they are willing to seek academic help. However, those with worse academic performance in English acquisition have high degrees of anxiety and are reluctant to ask others for help when they encounter problems or difficulties, and they do not know how to choose their individual learning strategies and are weak at self-learning abilities.

  • Design and practice of the blended learning model based on an online judge
           system

      Abstract: There is a lot of emphasis on theoretical education rather than practical ability training, in programming courses at colleges and universities, giving rise to low programming ability for students, which has a severe impact on their professional development. Automatic judgement-based online judge system is both suitable for exploration learning and for collaborative learning. This paper uses the principle of blended learning and proposes a set of blended learning modes which combine online judge with computer programming courses. The paper first describes design ideas of the blended learning mode in a learning environment, resource, learning content and form and learning evaluation. Then the author takes C programming language course as an example to elaborate practical measures of the blended learning. Finally, the comparative experiments show that the application of the mode has improved significantly in the knowledge points, the amount of code and test scores of students than traditional methods. The application of the blended learning model based on an online judge system in programming courses plays a positive role to students' programming, logical thinking, research and innovation capabilities.

  • The application of a flipped classroom model in modern educational
           technology

      Abstract: This study constructs a flipped classroom model based on modern educational technology, in which 90 students majored in Chinese language and literature in University were chosen to participate in the study. The effects are evaluated based on a questionnaire survey. Conclusions are: the flipped classroom model is feasible and effective, and it can effectively improve students' learning interest, self-directed learning competence, collaborative learning competence and practical capacity. Moodle can provide a good platform for flipped classroom. Not all instructional contents are fit to be flipped, so we should choose the suitable contents for flipping.

  • Investigating a blended learning model in an online environment

      Abstract: In this paper, the basic theory of blended learning was analysed, and a framework was established for studying the teaching model of blended learning in the network environment. The course of College English Listening was selected to exemplify the implementation of blended learning. Discussion was made on the content development, teaching design and implementation process of college courses oriented towards blended learning in the network environment. In addition, the effects and problems of blended learning were analysed. The results show the experimental class well mastered the main English listening strategies and could make use of them in the listening test skilfully.

  • Application and effects of blended learning in public courses in the
           university

      Abstract: The research focuses on the mode and factors of blended learning in a public course in a university. In this research, we design the course of blended learning and apply it to university students, and we analyse the result of the application through a questionnaire, interviews and other methods. The conclusion is that teachers need to attach importance to the design of students' participation in curriculum construction of practical courses, and while also emphasising the development good learning habits in theoretical learning.

  • A blended learning model of English teaching methodology course guided by
           constructivism

      Abstract: Constructivism as a leading theory in language teaching and learning, advocates an interactive learning environment for conscious and autonomous knowledge construction, which is greatly in accordance with the goals in education reform. With learner-centred principle advocated in constructivism, learners may construct language learning and learning outcomes in an interactive environment of blended learning. So this paper presents a blended design of English teaching methodology course guided by the theory of constructivism and offers specifications of its implementation and corresponding results from the learners' performance. It is supposed that to provide a blended learning environment for teaching practice course will contribute much to the professional growth of the learner, which is expected to contribute to the additional understanding of blended learning implementation in a wider context.

  • Teachers' time investment in online teaching

      Abstract: Online teaching has evolved from a marginal form of education to an increasingly popular alternative. However, teachers often have the concern that online teaching requires more time than traditional classroom teaching. This review selected 25 empirical studies published in recent years to investigate what instructional activities in online courses require teachers to spend a great amount of time on than in classroom teaching, what factors affect their time commitment, and what strategies can be used to reduce their time investment but without compromising the quality of online courses. Results show that teachers often spend a large quantity of time communicating with individual students, participating in and grading of online discussions, and preparing and maintaining online courses. The primary factors affect teachers' time commitment in online courses include class size, communication, and institutional support. Strategies for balancing students' learning outcomes and reducing teachers' time investment are summarised, and research areas for future studies are proposed.

  • A distance learning curriculum on pervasive computing

      Abstract: Engineering of pervasive computing (PerComp) systems is a new scientific field and from an educational perspective needs to draw from a large number of knowledge domains. The appearance of related courses in computer science curricula has a decade history, but the growth of interest has led in recent years to the design of more advanced PerComp educational programmes. In this paper, we present our experiences in organising, managing and teaching a PerComp curriculum at a postgraduate level since 2010 using distance learning methodologies in the Hellenic Open University. We discuss the distinct characteristics and related challenges of distance education and how these characteristics affected programme organisation, educational material structuring, laboratory courses delivering and student assessment. We report our main findings and conclusions extracted by an online survey filled by students enrolled in the programme, discuss the lessons learned and also provide a number of suggestions for further development.

  • Sustainable future replaces sustainable development concept by systemic
           behaviour via social responsibility

      Abstract: This is no engineering issue, but a conceptual issue with impact on engineering and other professional work and humankind's survival. Humankind has put itself in existential troubles by its one-sided behaviour over the entire industrialisation period, which provided a big material progress, but to a very small minority of humans only. The natural preconditions of human survival are in danger. The concept of 'sustainable development' has not solved the problem. The 'sustainable future' concept is supposed to replace it by introducing the requisitely systemic approach, which is now enjoying worldwide organisations' support with the concept of 'social responsibility'. But many crucial issues are still unsolved, including the information, measurement, diffusion and synergy of them in non-technological innovation of the inherited habits, etc.
