  • Structuring socio-technical complexity in infrastructure systems:
           an agent-based model
    • Authors: Reinier Verhoog, Amineh Ghorbani, Esther E. Hardi, Gerard P.J. Dijkema, Margot P.C. Weijnen
      Pages: 5 - 21
Abstract: In this paper we demonstrate how agent-based modelling can be used to understand the emergence of a new infrastructure system, more specifically, a biogas infrastructure in the Netherlands. The innovative element in our modelling approach is the use of MAIA (modelling agent systems using institutional analysis), a meta-model for agent-based modelling of socio-technical systems, to conceptualise and gain insights into the complexity of infrastructure systems. Through our agent-based simulation model we were able to see how the BioNet infrastructure might evolve over three decades, under various conditions of social norms and institutions. We found that current social norms and institutions allow agricultural biogas production to be economically feasible without any subsidies. The simulations also reveal low expected returns on investment and significant risks for farmers in biogas projects.

  • Crowd-sourced data for geospatial sanitation planning in informal
           settlements
    • Authors: Tomas Holderness, Ruth Kennedy-Walker, David Alderson, Barbara Evans
      Pages: 22 - 34
Abstract: Crowd-sourced geospatial data from OpenStreetMap and the Map Kibera project were used to model and optimise a proposed road-based sanitation network for the settlement of Kibera in Nairobi, Kenya. A Boolean multicriteria suitability analysis was employed to identify areas of land for transfer station infrastructure construction. Selected locations were then used in a spatio-topological network model for a theoretical road-based faecal sludge management scheme to service 158 public toilets in Kibera using Vacutug technology. The network model was employed to further optimise the location of transfer stations based on minimising total sewage transport time across the network. In this manner the paper establishes the utility of maps generated by communities and citizens as providing vital on-the ground information for sanitation engineering planning. Such information is in lieu of traditional formal sources of geospatial data, which are often not available in informal settlements. The study demonstrates crowd-sourced maps, when combined with geographical information systems for analysis, present new opportunities for sanitation infrastructure provision planning in unplanned communities.

  • A framework for characterising infrastructure interdependencies
    • Authors: Neil Carhart, Ges Rosenberg
      Pages: 35 - 60
Abstract: The interdependencies within and between infrastructure systems can produce benefits and risks. The perception and value of these relationships can vary significantly depending on the viewpoint of the actors within the system. The current methods for describing these relationships do not necessarily account for these different perspectives, and tend to focus on reducing the risks and vulnerabilities associated with interdependency. By taking a holistic, multi-stakeholder approach of the infrastructure system it is possible to also identify the proactive opportunities for improving efficiency, effectiveness and resilience that can emerge from the relationships. A taxonomy is presented which allows for the characterisation of infrastructure relationships in multiple dimensions, with particular focus on identifying opportunities in a way that is therefore complementary to current methods. An application of this taxonomy to the identification of potentially beneficial relationships within the UK infrastructure system is described.

  • Small things with big impact in urban infrastructure design
    • Authors: Sara Adhitya, Nick Tyler
      Pages: 61 - 85
Abstract: In cities, infrastructure is usually considered to include energy, transportation, communications, waste and other large-scale systems that support its operation. However, in the design of these systems, we often forget that these infrastructure systems operate is largely dependent on the small-scale interactions between the people and the infrastructure. These people-environment interactions are crucial to the success of the infrastructure in supporting the wellbeing of both society and the individual. This paper examines people-environment interactions in street-based transportation - such as walking, waiting and lingering in the urban space - to examine the importance of such interactions in the successful operation of the public transport system. It explores how personal interactions can be enhanced by paying closer attention to details of urban design in London and the cities of Panama, Santa Marta and Barranquilla in Latin America, and discusses various interventions where the local community can be involved in improving such interactions.

Abstract: The rise in the influence of sustainability principles has resulted in an almost overwhelming number of methods for defining, measuring and assessing sustainability and liveability. For such assessments to be accurate they must have a clearly defined 'sustainability and liveability space', be designed for the context in which the measurements are to be taken, evidence a clear causal chain and make explicit interdependencies. The degree to which current methods meet these criteria is varied. This paper introduces the City Analysis Methodology (CAM), an innovative urban analysis framework for holistically measuring the performance of UK cities with regard to sustainability and liveability. It demonstrates the need for, and defines the parameters for, interventions that enhance rather than compromise wellbeing and provides a model for other countries to leverage the sustainability and liveability of their cities. The paper concludes with an application of the CAM to the design of city infrastructure.

Abstract: We provide a review of methodologies previously used to evaluate impacts of transportation systems and changes in transportation infrastructure on energy consumption. We present a new framework that allows estimating the energy impacts of managed traffic lanes in the context of vehicle automation. The presented framework relies on two major components, an integrated transportation system simulator and a powertrain simulator. For the transportation system simulator we propose using integrated transportation system simulator POLARIS. For the powertrain simulator we use AUTONOMIE, a tool funded by the US Department of Energy. Both tools are developed at Argonne National Laboratory. We demonstrate our approach by modelling a transportation corridor along a major highway. Two scenarios are considered, unmanaged, when both trucks and cars use all the lanes of the highway and managed, under which one of the highway lanes is a dedicated lane for truck traffic and trucks are forming platoons using adaptive cruise control technology. We provide the numerical results of the experiment at the end of the paper. We also present the impact of vehicle hybridisation combined with automation on the energy consumption.
