  • Transport infrastructures, territorial management and foreign direct
           investment: recent evidence for MENA countries

      Abstract: To determine the main factors of the foreign direct investment attractiveness, almost of the economists have focused their works on the role of the traditional factors (economic and institutional). By against, the role of the transport and logistics remains marginal. In the present work, we have tried to valorise the contribution of the two factors to develop the territorial attractiveness of the FDI in the host countries. The aim of the paper is to demonstrate the transport infrastructure as a new factor of the FDI attractiveness through its positive effects on the territorial management in the host country. We have used a panel data model for 12 countries over the period 2000-2014. The findings argued the important role of the traditional economic determinants of the FDI (economic openness, real exchange rate, GDP per capita...). Also, the results confirm the significant contribution of transport infrastructures and they demonstrate that the host countries can enhance their competitiveness if they develop their transport infrastructures and adopt an effective logistic function which can ameliorate the territorial management.

  • Bank CEO emotional bias and incentive systems: structural equations
           model

      Abstract: In the present work, an intra-organisational analysis has been undertaken with reference organisational architecture theory, for the purpose of investigating a major loan-granting decision governing mechanism, namely, the incentive system. The paper is primarily axed around highlighting the bank CEO emotional biases' critical impact on explaining the banks' adopted incentive systems, as applied to motivate lower-rank managers, particularly account managers, who are in direct contact with client companies. Our analysis of responses, as drawn from a questionnaire sent to a number of Tunisian bank CEOs, proves to reveal well that the bank CEO's opting for incentive mechanisms specifically reserved to the account manager, turns out to be highly devoted to his proper skillful evaluation (optimism and overconfidence) and a matter of his particular perception of the possible relevant risk (loss aversion).

  • Codes of corporate governance: a comparative analysis between Ghana
           and the UK

      Abstract: We highlight considerable important aspects of the proposed 2010 Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) Code of Ghana and compare them with UK Corporate Governance Codes. Comparisons are undertaken on their respective definitions of corporate governance, compliance and enforcement, board structure and composition and key board committees. Initial findings suggest that both the 2010 SEC of Ghana and UK Codes are voluntary in nature and principally business induced. However, we recommend a more highly regulated business environment in Ghana to enhance corporate governance practices through effective compliance and enforcement. As several Ghanaian firms are characterised by large shareholders who painstakingly influence both the appointments of chief executive officer and board members, enhancements in corporate governance practices in Ghana are vitally important to safeguard the rights of minority shareholders, infuse confidence in investors and compliance with socio-economic goals of Ghana.

  • A structural model of knowledge management-strategic orientations
           relationship in constructing companies: an empirical study of a developing
           country

      Abstract: A number of theoretical frameworks have been proposed to develop the linkage between knowledge management and strategic orientations of organisation. While there are much theorising and case study in the area, validated research models integrating knowledge management and strategic orientation for empirical testing of these theories, particularly in constructing companies, have been scarce. In the present research, we attempt to develop and examine a research model for explaining the relationships between knowledge management and strategic orientation of constructing companies. Measurement items are adapted from existing scales found in the literature. Academic colleagues reviewed the items for face validity and readability. The scales are evaluated for reliability, convergent validity, and discriminant validity using data collected in a survey of top-ranked constructing companies. A structural equation modelling procedure is applied to the examination of proposed model. The research model was tested empirically using a sample of 196 engineers and managers. The results showed that there are significant positive relationships between knowledge management (creation, capture, organisation, storage, dissemination, and application) and strategic orientations (customer orientation, technological orientation, interfunctional coordination, and competitor orientation) of constructing companies. From the empirical data analysis, meaningful findings and conclusions are derived, and suggestions for future research are proposed.

  • Approaches to succession management of non-academic leaders in higher
           educational institutions: evidence from the University of Cape Coast,
           Ghana

      Abstract: The University of Cape Coast, Ghana has 15 doctorates and centres with their heads designated as directors. The paper assesses the approach(es) to succession management of non-academic directors of the university. We conducted in-depth interviews with nine of the 15 directors. We presented the qualitative data which was analysed applying inter-textual analytical tool by examining the relationship among our three sets of data to ascertain the extent to which our research objective is achieved. We found that the university does not adopt any formal approach due to the absence of a formal succession plan. The institution therefore depends on its statutes which make succession appear as an ordinary role replacement, thereby departing from the conversional approach to managing talent. We recommend that the university should design and commit to its own leadership succession plan and consider competence/performance record as well, instead of depending solely on seniority as 'succession' criterion.
