  • Nash type games in competitive facilities location
    • Authors: Athanasia Karakitsiou, Athanasios Migdalas
      Pages: 4 - 12
Abstract: In a non-cooperative game, a Nash equilibrium corresponds to a set of strategies, which ensure that none of the players are better off by unilaterally changing his strategy. This work focuses on the application of Nash Equilibrium to the competitive facility location. Its aim is to provide an up to date review of the literature concerning the discrete version of the problem.
Keywords: non-cooperative games; competitive location; Nash equilibrium; facility location; literature review

  • Optimal trading strategy under linear-percentage temporary impact price
dynamics with conditional value-at-risk as timing risk measure
    • Authors: Arti Singh, Selvamuthu Dharmaraja
      Pages: 13 - 37
Abstract: This paper attempts to solve constrained optimal trading problem of minimising expected execution cost subject to non-negativity constraints for risk neutral as well as risk averse investors. The optimal trading problems are modelled under linear-percentage temporary impact price dynamics (LPT price model) of underlying asset's execution price dynamics. The algorithm to solve optimal trading problem with non-negativity constraints under LPT price model by static approximation method (SA method) is detailed. Furthermore, a comprehensive discussion of applicability of other existing approaches in literature to solve proposed problems and, their limitations are presented to justify use of SA method for the same. In case of a risk averse investor, the conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) is taken as a measure for the timing risk. The extensive numerical illustrations on simulated data as well as on the real market data depict the practical significance of the proposed optimal trading problems.

  • Critical success factors in the TBL concept of sustainable
           entrepreneurship
    • Authors: Theodore Tarnanidis, Jason Papathanasiou, Demetres Subeniotis
      Pages: 38 - 53
Abstract: This research presents a generalised measurement model of sustainable entrepreneurship goals. It re-examines the approach for capturing and incorporating the triple bottom line concept (TBL) of economic, ecological and social goals. The literature overview has shown that research in the area of sustainable entrepreneurship is still growing, as there is a lack of research that sheds light on the elaboration of an aggregate measure. In doing so, we collected data from 150 Greek food companies by applying the method of structural equation modelling from different stakeholders. To that extent we utilised the fundamental scale development recommendations. We developed a parsimonious inventory of 12-itemed with four factors. The evolving contextualisation could serve as an initial starting point for venture capitalists to craft better entrepreneurial plans and managerial strategies.

  • Occupational health and safety within corporate social responsibility
context: a balanced scorecard dynamic decision making model
    • Authors: Theodore Tarnanidis, Jason Papathanasiou, Demetres Subeniotis
      Pages: 54 - 70
Abstract: This paper aims at developing a decision making model for assisting managers in incorporating occupational health and safety (OHS) topics within a corporate social responsibility (CSR) context. It is a multi-step decision making model which is based on balanced scorecard and system dynamic thinking. In particular, the model is founded on Carrols' pyramid and Elkington triple-bottom-line approach for corporate social responsibility (CSR) for developing a corporate CSR-OHS agenda. The next step includes the development of a system dynamic balanced scorecard model with the critical variables of CSR-OHS agenda. Additionally, some scenarios are planned and tested in order to define some main types of managers' decision making. The results show four major types of managers' decision: proactive/ethical-driven decision making, proactive/business case-driven decision making, reactive/ethical-driven decision-making and reactive/business case decision making.

      Pages: 71 - 90
Abstract: This paper describes optimisation of a multi-objective flexible job shop scheduling problem (MO-FJSP) in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) where widely various products are manufactured in make-to-order (MTO) mode. A genetic algorithm using tabu search strategy was applied to solve the MO-FJSP incorporating weighted tardiness, setup worker load balance, and work-in-process. From experiments using data based on real-world SME, the solutions obtained using the proposed method are compared with those obtained by conventional earliest due date (EDD), and GA using multi-island. The results confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed method. Results imply that the proposed approach is applicable not only for production scheduling but also for estimating the investment of resources such as machine and worker capacity.

Abstract: In every production and/or inventory control operation, the reliability of the supply process has a great impact on its outcome. We present two analytical models for computing the performance of a merge, push supply network with unreliable suppliers that feed a distribution centre with a common shared buffer. The breakdowns and repair times of the suppliers are modelled via exponential and Coxian-2 distributions. The supply network is modelled as a continuous time Markov process with discrete states. The structure of the transition matrices of these specific systems is explored and two separate computational algorithms are developed to generate them for different values of system characteristics. The proposed algorithms are used as an optimisation tool to determine the optimal values of the system's characteristics such as the number of suppliers, capacity of distribution centre, capacity of buffer and to calculate the system's performance measures. Also a comparison between the two proposed algorithms is provided regarding the performance measures of WIPsystem, throughput rate, availability and blocking of each supplier.

      Pages: 109 - 134
Abstract: Ship-to-ship (STS) transfer of cargo operations suffers inherently from risks that can compromise the success of such operations, leading to an accident with adverse effects on human lives and the environment. A feasible way to tackle the risks of STS transfers is through the use of multicriteria decision aid (MCDA) methodologies. This paper aims to develop an MCDA model to evaluate risks of an STS transfer based on the outranking relation concept. The proposed methodology uses confidence indices to compare alternative risk scenarios on stochastic risk criteria evaluation. To do so, a team of experts evaluate the scenarios regarding three risk factors; the likelihood of a scenario to occur, the severity of the scenario and the ability to detect the risk on time. Next, fuzzy domination relation is applied to complete the ranking of the risks. Finally, robustness analysis is performed to control the model's stability.

Abstract: Environmental protection is an issue that rises in importance in the agenda of the priorities in transportation sector. Railways are perceived to contribute positively towards such a direction. The current work focuses on the actual parameters that affect energy and emissions in rail freight transport. These parameters were investigated using a model. Input variables include technical and operational characteristics of the railway track, the rolling stock and the loading units as well as the restrictions of the wagons' loading process, which prevent railways to operate at full capacity. The model was validated on the main Greek railway corridor connecting Athens to Thessaloniki. The analysis revealed and quantified the impacts affecting energy and emissions: train load factor, train speed, gradient profile of railway track, rolling stock types, payload of transported loading units, rules of efficient wagon loading, fuel type and emission factor for electricity generation in the specific country. Comparisons with pure road transport and sensitivity analysis were also carried out on the Athens-Thessaloniki case study.

  • Resource levelling using genetic algorithms for a power plant boiler
           construction project

      Pages: 151 - 167
Abstract: This paper deals with the use of intelligent techniques for resource levelling optimisation. An intelligent approach previously introduced but enriched and improved, is applied in a real world project corresponding to the construction of a power plant boiler. Resource levelling optimisation is related to the optimal handling of available resources of a project. Conventional optimisation approaches like exhaustive or greedy search are unable to provide high quality solutions in a short amount of time. Thus, intelligent approaches properly modified, are used, which are capable of quickly reaching highly accurate near-optimal solutions. In this work, a genetic algorithm is applied in the resource levelling data of the boiler construction project, using a new approach that introduces a special time interval for the activities calculation of the early and late start. Accordingly, resource profiles are further evaluated with the use of a special multiple evaluation function approach called sequential function evaluation (SFE).

  • Implementation of parametric design philosophy into industrial production
line simulation for c-Si PV modules

      Pages: 168 - 180
Abstract: Power generation from photovoltaic (PV) cells is a well-established and promising technology that takes full advantage of solar energy, which is a renewable energy source. Although numerous methods of PV recycling have been proposed worldwide, Greece has not taken any serious corresponding action until now. Moreover, estimations expect that the overall quantity of c-Si PV waste in Europe will reach 3,500,000 tons until 2040 (Bio Intelligence Service, 2011) while in Greece, until 2038 the amount will be in the range of 264,000 tons (Katsigiannis et al., 2014). As a result, it is essential to propose a unified management of PV end-of-life (EOL) process, in order to achieve a successful recovery of materials such as silicon, aluminium, silver and glass. The scope of this paper is the simulation of an integrated c-Si PV recycling process with the use of CATIA software. The design of this recycling process is parametric, in order to allow the location and sizing configuration of each machine and installation type that can be used.

  • An efficient and refined minimum spanning tree approach for large water
           distribution system
    • Authors: S.V.S. Santhi, P. Padmaja
      Pages: 181 - 206
Abstract: For the past several years, large graph mining applications have been used for a wide range of analyses. One such application is a water distribution system (WDS). WDSs are networked with both topological and behavioural complexity since it comprises of a large number of pipes and junctions. Therefore, it becomes highly expensive to design such large WDSs. Hence, in this paper, we suggest to construct a reduced WDS network with minimum cost by applying a minimum spanning tree (MST) approach. However, it becomes difficult to apply traditional MST algorithms to large graphs because they have a time complexity of O(N2log N). Therefore the authors propose a divide-and-conquer mechanism for finding an approximate MST. The proposed approach shows the novelty of the algorithm by reducing the time complexity to O(N1.5log N). Experimental results show that the proposed approach had performed well and fit the expected results for both synthetic and real-world data.
