  • Mathematical modelling and simulation of epicycloidal path type
           centrifugal pendulum vibration absorber applied on three-staged stiffness
           clutch damper

      Abstract: The concept of epicycloidal pendulum is introduced based on definition of involute. The equations of motion of epicycloidal path type centrifugal pendulum vibration absorber (CPVA) are derived, with which a simulation model of tautochronic epicycloidal path type CPVA is established. Some numerical simulations are done to investigate the characteristic of the natural frequency of tautochronic epicycloidal path type CPVA, to analyse effects of tuning order and pendulum motion amplitude on its performance and to contrast the performance between tautochronic epicycloidal and circular path type CPVA. The performance of three-staged stiffness clutch damper with tautochronic CPVA under creeping condition is also investigated.

  • Simulation and experimental validation of damping characteristic for a
           valve-controlled adjustable shock absorber

      Abstract: In this study, a novel valve-controlled adjustable shock absorber is presented along with its working principle and valve system behaviour. According to the theory of hydraulics and elasticity, the physical parametric model for the shock absorber force characteristics was established then simulated in MATLAB software environment. The simulation results are compared with the shock absorber bench test at different control currents under the QC/T545 test standard to demonstrate the proposed model's validity. On the basis of the proposed and validated shock absorber model, the influence of the solenoid valve proportion orifice radius on damping characteristics was analysed and summarised to potentially offer reference for the future studies.

  • Experimental evaluation on vehicle aerodynamic noise performance

      Abstract: In this study, a passenger car was tested for its aerodynamic noise performance in terms of sound pressure level in the wind tunnel at Tongji University (Shanghai Automotive Wind Tunnel Center), where the phase microphone array was used along with sound surface microphones and artificial heads combining with the adhesive tape sealing method. The wind noise sources, the noise level on the exterior surface and the sealing influence on the interior noise level were evaluated. Based on datum of the tested subject, the potential design problem associated with the body structure and seals are identified, the main aerodynamic noise sources and their transfer path are located. The details about the setup of the experiment, data collection and processing method offered in this study can be used to not only help improve the tested vehicle aerodynamic noise performance, but also provide a long-term reference value for the aero-noise research community.

  • Free modal analysis of wet friction plates with three different kinds of
           oil groove structures

      Abstract: In this paper, in order to study the vibration characteristics of wet friction plates commonly used with three different kinds of oil groove structures, three-dimensional finite element models were established for no groove wet friction plate, radial groove wet friction plate and the spiral groove wet friction plate. The free modal analyses of the friction plates with three different kinds of oil groove structures are carried out by using the ANSYS Workbench software. The seventh-order to twelfth-order vibration modes are obtained. At the same time, the modal analyses show that the natural frequencies of the non-groove friction plate are larger than the natural frequencies of the other two kinds of friction plates, and the natural frequencies of the radial groove friction plate and the spiral groove friction plate is changed with the change of the number of the oil groove.

  • Parameters optimisation of vehicle suspension system for better ride
           comfort

      Abstract: The performance of a vehicle suspension system affects ride comfort and stability of the vehicle which are the two conflicting requirements. A passive vehicle suspension uses a spring and viscous damper to control the performance. In this paper, an efficient method is proposed for determining optimal stiffness and damping coefficient of a vehicle suspension system. A two degree-of-freedom quarter car vehicle model using linear quadratic regulator (LQR) control is established and the response of the model is obtained. The vehicle is considered to travel on the random road with constant velocity and the road roughness profile is modelled as the output of first-order linear filter under white noise excitation. The optimal parameters are obtained for the vehicle by correlating the performance of passive suspension with the fully active suspension using LQR. Results show that the performance of passive suspension using optimal parameters is very close to that of active suspension.

  • Progressive multistep press forming of a truss core panel for floor
           structure of electric vehicle

      Abstract: The truss core panel is a composite of double-layer triangular core panels, and has characteristics of high strength and low weight. However, problems of fracturing and a limited forming height arise because of the complex shape of the panel. From research on a hemispherical shape transition mould, we propose a new pyramid transition shape for the die used in the progressive press forming. Employing the finite element method, we simulated progressive press deforming and determined the effectiveness of forming. The new mould greatly improves the thickness distribution and forming height of the truss core panel. Additionally, we manufactured a model of the die and processed a truss core panel, and compared the thickness distributions of simulated and processed truss core panels. The thickness distributions of simulated and manufactured panels were similar, demonstrating that simulation can be used to study the forming problem of a truss core panel.
