  • Higher education surveys from United States' National Center for
           Education Statistics
    • Authors: Pilar Mendoza, Enyu Zhou, Nathan Abdelmalek, Ze Wang
      Pages: 3 - 30
Abstract: In this article, we analysed the use of surveys conducted by the United States' National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) related to postsecondary education in studies published in 2015. We discuss topics studied, methods used and limitations reported. Based on the review of the 27 published articles in 2015, we found that the most commonly used NCES postsecondary surveys are ELS:2002 and IPEDS, followed by BPS:04/09, NPSAS, NELS:1988, B&B:1993/1997/2003 and HSLS:2009. The issues studied in the articles reviewed include college access and choice, student outcomes and higher education finances. In addition, our analysis indicates that these articles applied appropriate and advanced analytical methods and the majority of them took into consideration the complex sampling designs and data structures of these NCES surveys. We concluded with a series of recommendations for both users and leaders developing these surveys in order to maximise their utility. These recommendations, if adopted, will undoubtedly result in more use of NCES data for research.

  • Extending the internal/external frame of reference model to early-year
cognitive abilities for children from diverse backgrounds
    • Authors: Pilar Mendoza, Enyu Zhou, Nathan Abdelmalek, Ze Wang
      Pages: 31 - 51
Abstract: This study extended the internal/external frame of reference (I/E) model to referencing longitudinal data for children from different backgrounds. The extended I/E model was different from the traditional I/E model because early-year verbal and mathematical cognitive abilities offered fewer opportunities for external comparison in school than did later-year school achievement. The extended I/E model was investigated by structural equation modelling using data from the Millennium Cohort Study. The total sample size was 8,731 English children, among whom 1,417 were ethnic minority, 3,327 were disadvantaged and 3,987 were advantaged children. The results revealed that the traditional I/E model prediction was supported only for age 7 cognitive abilities. The results based on age 3 or age 5 cognitive abilities are only consistent with the traditional I/E model prediction in the paths predicting mathematical self-concept. The extended I/E model was typically supported for advantaged, disadvantaged and ethnic minority children, in descending order.

  • Using large-scale educational data to test motivation theories: a
synthesis of findings from Swedish studies on test-taking motivation
    • Authors: Hanna Eklöf, Eva Knekta
      Pages: 52 - 71
Abstract: With the purpose of mapping the test-taking motivation construct, theoretically and empirically, the current paper presents a synthesis of findings from test-taking motivation studies performed in various large-scale educational assessment settings. Self-report scales measuring reported motivation to spend effort on the test, and in some studies also other aspects of expectancy and value, have been administered to Swedish samples taking tests such as the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study - Advanced (TIMSS), the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and the Swedish National Tests. Taken together, results indicate that tests with lower stakes are associated with a lower level of reported test-taking motivation, that the expectancy-value theory seems a viable framework for interpreting the test-taking motivation construct, and that reported level of motivation consistently seems to have a significant effect on test performance, also when modelled together with other motivational and background variables.

  • Structural equation modelling trees for invariance assessment
    • Authors: Hanna Eklöf, Eva Knekta
      Pages: 72 - 93
Abstract: Large-scale assessment data have become increasingly popular in educational research. Factor model invariance testing is also a key feature of educational research, as scholars seek to identify situations where scales work comparably for different subgroups in the population. There exist a variety of methods for assessing invariance; however, standard approaches for this purpose can be cumbersome with a large number of groups, and do not typically accommodate invariance assessment across multiple variables simultaneously. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the use of Structural Equation Modelling Trees for invariance assessment with complex large scale assessment data. The results of the study, involving Programme for International Student Assessment reading interest inventory data, found a lack of invariance based on nation of residence, language spoken in the home and family socioeconomic status. Advantages, and disadvantages, of SEMtree when compared to other methods for invariance assessment are discussed in light of these findings.

  • Investigating differential options functioning using multinomial logistic
           regression
    • Authors: Minjeong Park, Amery D. Wu
      Pages: 94 - 119
Abstract: This paper focuses on an investigation of differential functioning in all options of multiple-choice items, referred to as differential options functioning (DOF). DOF is defined as an investigation into whether respondents from different groups (i.e. subpopulations), with equal levels of the attribute being measured (i.e. skill, ability, etc.) would have different probabilities to select the options. This paper aims to reconceptualise previous approaches to DOF in terms of its terminologies, purposes and uses. This paper further proposes a set of simple and integrated procedures for investigating DOF based on the well-known theory of multinomial logistic regression. A real data demonstration is provided to guide the application of the proposed method. The demonstration compares two test-language groups (English vs. French) on the four options of 15 multiple-choice items in booklet 13 of the 2011 Progress in International Reading Literacy Study.

  • The validity of the parental academic support scale: associations among
           relational and family involvement outcomes
    • Authors: Joseph P. Mazer, Blair Thompson
      Pages: 120 - 132
Abstract: This study compiled validity evidence for the parental academic support scale (PASS), a multi-dimensional instrument that measures parent-teacher communication across five factors (child's academic performance, classroom behaviour, preparation, hostile peer interactions and health). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) demonstrated close model fit and replicated previous CFA tests, providing further content validity evidence. Associations between parental academic support, relational closeness, relationship satisfaction and family involvement illustrate that the PASS construct is related to similar constructs, offering further evidence for construct validity. Implications and areas for future research are addressed.

  • A comparison of five methods for pretest item selection in online
           calibration
    • Authors: Yi Zheng, Hua-Hua Chang
      Pages: 133 - 158
Abstract: Many long-term testing programs rely on large item banks that need to be replenished regularly with new items, and these new items need to be pretested before being used operationally. Online calibration is a pretesting strategy in computerised adaptive testing, which embeds pretest items in operational tests and adaptively matches the pretest items with examinees. This paper compares five existing methods for pretest item selection in online calibration. A simulation study was conducted under the one-, two-, and three-parameter logistic models. The effects of two estimation methods, three seeding locations, and five calibration sample sizes were also investigated. Findings from the simulation study are mixed. However, overall, the simplest random selection method appears to be a potential best choice.

  • An efficient standard error estimator of the DINA model parameters when
           analysing clustered data
    • Authors: Jung Yeon Park, Young-Sun Lee, Matthew S. Johnson

Abstract: Cognitive diagnostic modelling is often used to analyse educational and psychological data, which are typically collected through cluster sampling with unequal selection probabilities. Jackknife is a resampling technique used to account for the sampling design. It typically gives unbiased estimates of the standard errors of the model parameters, but implementation can be vastly time-consuming. This study proposes an accurate and computationally fast approach for the standard errors of the parameters in the DINA model, one that incorporates the Huber-White sandwich estimator approach. Our simulation study suggests that the proposed sandwich estimator performs well when analysing clustered data structures specifically with moderate to large numbers of clusters. We also demonstrate its applicability to TIMSS 2011 mathematics.
