  • Life-cycle cost assessment of inelastic buildings with tuned mass
           dampers in seismic areas

      Abstract: A methodology is presented for evaluating, in a life-cycle cost (LCC) perspective, the seismic effectiveness of passive tuned mass dampers (TMDs) on inelastic building structures. Traditional assessment criteria reveal that TMD performance largely depends on the extent of response non-linearity and therefore on the seismic intensity level, proving satisfactory under moderate earthquakes but negligible under strong ones. Yet those criteria cannot provide a concise measure of control advantages, since they cannot weigh, on a physically sound, economic basis, the relative impact of different hazard levels. Through estimating the occurrence probability and expected lifetime cost of future seismic damages and losses, a multi-hazard LCC approach is here proposed as an efficient alternative for TMD cost-effectiveness assessment. An illustrative example shows that retrofitting a TMD on typical low-rise steel office structures in high seismicity regions may significantly reduce the building lifetime cost despite the detrimental effect observed under collapse limit state.

  • Fatigue behaviour of concrete-filled steel tubular joints - a

      Abstract: High stress concentration at weld vicinity in welded steel tubular joints has led researchers to try finding an effective method to reduce these stresses. Since the beginning of the last decade, concrete filling of the steel tubes has been effectively used to reduce stresses at the tubular joints. This paper summarises research on stress concentration factors and fatigue behaviour conducted on concrete-filled steel tubular T-, Y-, K-, KT-, N-, and X-joints. Based on available experimental results, nominal stress range and hot spot stress range design S-N curves have been proposed for concrete-filled steel tubular joints. These curves are compared with that of the tubular joints without concrete filling.   • Model updating incorporating measured response uncertainties and
           confidence levels of tuning parameters

      Abstract: Automated model updating of real civil engineering structures is often very challenging due to the presence of different degrees of uncertainty in measured responses and confidence levels of the tuning parameters used. To address this issue, this paper presents a hybrid model updating procedure for large-scale civil engineering structures which incorporate these variations by means of data scatter for both measured responses and tuning parameters as a logical extension to the conventional automated model updating procedures. Scatters in the measured responses are derived through statistically analysing ambient vibration test data, while confidence levels of tuning parameters are derived based on the engineering judgement. The results of applying this hybrid model automated model updating procedure to a ten story building show a significant improvement in obtaining more realistic updated models, against its conventional counterpart that was done previously on the same structure.

  • Nonlinearity detection and dynamic characterisation of aramid and silicon
           carbide fibres

      Abstract: The deployment of fibres made of high performance materials such as aramid polymers is spreading in many different engineering applications. Thanks to their excellent mechanical properties, they are being applied also in the structural field. The question that prompted this study is whether nonlinearity can be used for assessing structural damage in aramid fibres. The idea was to detect weak nonlinearities in the dynamic response measured on fibres and ropes, and to look for correlations with damaged samples of the material. Positive results would usher the possibility of using such quantity as an indicator for evaluating the residual life span of aramid elements, cables and ropes. In order to investigate the sensitivity of this approach, nonlinear characterisation tests were carried out on aramid fibres by applying sweep-sine excitations at different loading levels. In order to have a comparison term and to test the setup machine, a similar characterisation procedure was also applied to fibres made with a different high performance material: silicon carbide.

  • Reliability block diagram methods for system reliability analysis of
           spatial structures

      Abstract: The safety of complex spatial structures in operation depends highly on the reliability of the whole system and its structural components. In order to determine the relationship between system reliability and reliability of its components, reliability block diagram (RBD) method, which emphasises depicting the connection mode among all the components of a system, is employed for system reliability analysis of spatial structures. With the assumption of geometric stability, a new approach, aiming at finding out key elements where damage could lead to overall collapse of the structure, is adopted here for the logic relationship identification among components. The logic relationship, which is considered as the core component of the reliability block diagram, is utilised for reliability analysis of the system and the predetermined components. Finally, a large-span latticed grid spatial structure is investigated to validate the applicability of the RBD method for analysing the system reliability of spatial structures.

  • Lifecycle performance deterioration modelling of corroded reinforced
           concrete structures

      Abstract: In lifecycle management of corrosion affected reinforced concrete structures, it is difficult to correctly assess lifecycle performance due to the uncertainties associated with structural resistance deterioration. This paper presents a stochastic deterioration modelling approach to evaluate the performance deterioration of corroded concrete structures during their service life. The flexural strength deterioration is analytically predicted on the basis of bond strength evolution due to reinforcement corrosion, which is examined by the experimental data available. An assessment criterion is defined to evaluate the flexural strength deterioration for the time-dependent reliability analysis. The results from the numerical example show that the proposed approach is capable of evaluating the structural deterioration and lifecycle performance of the concrete structures suffering from reinforcement corrosion.
